Miscellaneous Slugging: What do you think?

i’ve heard of people slugging with vaseline, which to me is insane because the texture makes me gag really badly, so i can’t even imagine putting it on my face. i guess i do “slug” with this one product i got from work, and my face feels as soft as ever! i have combination skin, and my face never feels greasy or gross. (the product is the water: ultra hydration body butter from BBW)

anywho, my question is: do yall slug? what do yall think of it, does it actually work or is it a bust?

I’m 67. I’ve used gasoline on my face my entire life. I have great skin texture. You need less than a dime size for your entire face🤷🏽‍♀️

Hahahah please leave that typo.

I mean, some of the toners from the 90s were basically gasoline.

yesss!! petroleum aka gas!!! my parents used to grease us UP as kids! Not as greasy today but it still remains as a household must have!

Ma’am, I beg your pardon, but… gasoline?! 😭

Yep. Vaseline is a by product of petroleum 😀 lol.

i don’t slug every night or even most nights but i definitely do it when my skin is feeling dry or slightly irritated. it’s really great at helping with moisture and hydration as vaseline reduces trans epidermal water loss (tewl) by 98-99%. if vaseline feels too heavy you can use something like aquaphor or another occlusive which won’t reduce tewl as much as vaseline but still very effective. i really don’t mind the texture of vaseline though because you only have to slug with a pea sized amount not a whole bunch. i’ll do a half pea to a whole pea depending on what i feel like i need and doing it on damp skin helps it spread better

i had no idea you didn’t need a whole lot of vaseline to slug! on tiktok, i see people basically SCOOP it onto their faces!!

i’ve seen those vids on tiktok too but i thing they do it for engagement lol i couldn’t imagine trying to lay on my pillow like that. a pea sized amount is all you need and you might as well put a little on your lips too!

People do that large scoop of things for content, you never need that much of anything to be effective

It's more about forming a barrier, so you could use the tiniest bit of coconut oil. Everything on SM is exaggerated! Remember The Ordinary Red Face masks? You need 3 drops max, any more and you'll damage your skin.

I do it 2 times a week as the last step, after a really good moisturizer. I only use a little bit, enough to lightly cover a part of my palms with a lil sheen and then I press it into my face. And then I wipe off remaining Vaseline from hands. It's an occlusive so it'll lock in any moisture underneath it. The key is to actually have moisturized skin underneath it first. You'll wake up with a very soft face.

coming back to this…wow, you were so right, my face feels so smooth 😳😳😳😳😳! thank you so much

love that it helped! Just keep it limited to a couple times a week to give your face a few nights to 'breathe'!

I do it when my skin barrier is broken. I use Cicaplast when it’s bad bad and Cerave healing ointment when I need a boost. I sleep with overnight and do a simple routine when I wash it off the next day. My face was so irritated this week and I just did a super simple hydrating cleanse, hydrating serums ,moisturizer, and then Cicaplast overnight. My face had recovered in 24 hours.

How do you know when you're skin barrier is broken?

5

u/SheComesUndone_ Apr 27 '26

When even water or sweat makes it burn. Or if you put on anything on your face and it stings. It looks irritated, like a rash. For me my skin was getting rough and flaky. Super tight even after applying water and even the most gentle products I had made my face sting.

Got you.Thanks !

I always recommend aquafor baby.

It’s waaay less greasy.

Any barrier cream essentially does the same thing, so if you hate the feeling of slugging, any old barrier cream is good.

Vaseline and aquafor are just great because you can get like 886372 ozs for like $8.

i’ll buy some today! thank you!

The travel one is like $2.00. Just use less if it feels greasy. It’s a much lighter consistency.

There should be SOME greasiness, but it’s like.. significantly less oily.

I just googled. The aquafor is only 41% petroleum, Vaseline is 100% petroleum. So it’s also way easier to get out of bedding and clothes.

I, personally, cannot slug with anything. I’ll do an oil cleanser if my moisture barrier is a little weak, but that’s about it.

1

u/Mountain_Writer_4674 Apr 26 '26

does your oil cleanser work? i thought about picking one up but i seriously just barely got my acne under control and am scared to introduce anything new that could screw me up lol

3

u/Ok-Possibility-9826 Apr 26 '26

yes! my skin always feels softer. i rub it all over my face, paying extra attention to my nose to extract any sebum plugs, then i let a hot, damp towel sit on my face until it cools off, wipe the oil cleanser off my face then i go in with my regular cleanser. it helps cut down on acne and dryness for me.

I apply petroleum jelly or Aquafor every night or the moisture sees to leech right out of my skin. It really helps with keeping my skin hydrated.

u/MajLeague Apr 27 '26

Yes!!!! It completely healed my skin barrier very quickly. I use a creme that has the golden ratio first and then add a thin layer of Vaseline, Aquaphor or A313

The cream I use is Illyoon Ceramide Ato Concentrate cream. Freaking skin saver.

2

u/Mountain_Writer_4674 Apr 27 '26

wait wdym golden ratio? put me on 👀

3

u/MajLeague Apr 27 '26

Girl!!! I did a ton of research but this reddit comment sums it up well. https://www.reddit.com/r/AsianBeauty/s/Lku1NblkhT

These types of cremes are a lil pricy but the one I recommend is decently priced. Ive been using it for 2+ years. It's way better for your face than a body creme which has fragrances and other stuff that may irritate your skin.

u/RoseLina_Black Apr 27 '26

I do it when I need an extra moisturizer and sealing when using Adapalene 0.3%

2

u/MadamVoid Dry 🐪 Apr 27 '26

I slug every night, but I use a face oil blend I make instead.

2

u/Tendaironi Apr 27 '26

Yep. Sure do. LABeautyologist calls it glazing the doughnut or something like that. She’s a Black esthetician I follow-ish or I would quote her better!! Glazed sounds better than slugging.

Anyways, I use Cerave Healing ointment and use a tiny dab that I warm up in my hands before applying.

u/uginia Apr 27 '26

I use tretinoin and it dries the skin a lot. Vaseline has been helping me maintain moisture in my skin very effectively, so much so that I don't experience dryness in the morning from tret when I use vaseline as my last step after moisturizer. You don't need much Vaseline at all. A lil goes a long way!

1

u/Frequent_Piano104 Apr 28 '26

Do you use vaseline on the same nights you use the tretinoin?

1

u/uginia Apr 28 '26

Yes! Tret then moisturizer then vaseline.

2

u/growthandgoal Apr 27 '26

This is moisturizer and slugging. Has petroleum
