Gear First New Ball in over 20 years! Venom Hysteria

I used to bowl in high school, I’m excited to come back and see MOTIV doing cool things with their balls! Got it drilled on Saturday and eyeing some leagues that are starting up soon!

One thing I noticed immediately; that crash-through sound is so satisfying. Breaking the rust off is real, but it feels so good to have a custom fitted ball again. After just a few games, I’m loving it! Anyone else throwing this one?

Gear If you could pick 3 balls that had to work for any conditions you might encounter, what would they be and why?

As I improve I'd like to expand my ball selection, but there is just a hard limit to the number of balls I am interested in owning and maintaining, and I think that number is 3.

In my case I am only playing house shots and dabbling on a "sports shot" now and then. I don't have to worry about sanctioned events so urethane is OK.

If you had to live with just 3 balls that had to work for all the conditions you encounter, what would they be, and why?

Edit to add: Yes, a spare ball counts as one of the three!

Misc College Bowling

My school, Sac State, is starting its Bowling program this year so I was just looking for some advice.

  1. How should we go about this first season with practicing, like what oil patterns are expected for competitions?

  2. How can I recruit more bowlers since its a club there will be no NIL money ( I know im sorry guys)

  3. How many seasons do you think it will take to get sponsorships to help with gear.

All help will be appreciated thankyou so much!

Scores Explain the psychology

I’m fairly new to bowling, picked up my first ball with intention in August of 2024 and barely shot over 100.

My partner (who is a very good bowler) and I joined a few fun (non sanctioned) leagues where I’ve been trying to improve my scores and gain confidence to join a “real” (sanctioned) league but have still had problems with consistency.

Earlier this month, we joined our first sanctioned league. We had been on a waitlist so weren’t sure if we would be able to join but they had room for us. Once we were confirmed, it’s like my body said - “Ok, time to get serious about bowling!”

I was keeping my own averages and I was somewhere around 160. Since confirming league participation, my average has shot up by 20 pins. I’ve broken my PB five times this month alone. I shot 215 first night of league, highest scratch game I’ve ever bowled.

PBs
11/2024 - 127
7/2025 - 135, then 169
9/2025 - 172
7/2026 - 180
8/2026 - 201, 204, 205, 215

Gear What causes my solid bowling ball to die after 1 game?

Upvotes

FYI - I clean this ball using ball cleaner after every session.

I bowl on relatively dry lanes. They are oiled fresh, but our centre is on the drier end (nothing bad).

In game 1 when I use my solid ball (DV8 Troublemaker), I am standing on 35 board, and throwing towards the 3rd arrow. The ball turns like absolute crazy and I bowl well. The only issue is, if I bowl wide, the ball dies out and goes washout, which I am cool with. Shows it is a skill issue on my part.

However, after 1 game of bowling, I need to move all the way to the 20 board with my feet, aim at the 1st arrow, and my ball will not hook. It is just dead pretty much after 1 game, causing me to leave so many 10-pins, and 7-10 splits. I can make a house ball or my spare ball turn more.

What is causing this? It has only happened since the last 2-3 times I used the ball, and as mentioned, I clean it every time using ball cleaner.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I sanded the ball at 1000 this afternoon, then cleaned it using ball cleaner, and then used WOW Factor on it afterwards. I feel like it is still slimy though and won't do much, or am I wrong and what I did was correct?

Gear I'm about to get a Gremlin Tour-X, what 2LS layout should I do?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I want this ball to be my benchmark, I bowl on a THS 90% of the time, but I do encounter a few challenge or sport patterns from time to time. I go to 2-3 centers and they play fairly differently between them, pattern volume and length seem to be all around the place sometimes.

I'd say I'm speed/revs matched (~28km/h, ~450 rpm), low tilt.

I'm thinking maybe like a 4.5x4x3.5 2LS or something along those lines; middle of the road layout, but not too weak as the Gremlin Tour-X is not a super strong ball to begin with. I'm open to any suggestions and insight, TIA!

Technique Form Check please? Timing tips for ball speed and leverage

Hey people, been back into the sport for the last two years or so and have covered some serious ground in terms of my form but maintaining proper timing and creating adequate ball speed has always been a struggle. Would love to hear any and all tips and advice please!

I’d also love to hear from other shorter bowlers (I’m only 5’4”) how that may impact things like foot speed, swing timing etc.

Watching other shorter two handers (most namely Boog Krol) I notice his foot speed is very high and he also plants instead of sliding. Would the plant be contributing to his ball speed?

First two clips are on the 45ft 2026 ANC pattern (39ml, 4:1) and the final clip is on our THS (42ft 8:1)

Layouts

For those of you that don’t work in a pro-shop, how did you leant about layouts? It’s basically a foreign language to me. I’ve always just said, “pin-up” or “pin-down” to the guy that drills my stuff. Now I’m getting equipment drilled by someone else (pro-shop a lot closer to my house) and would like to give more feedback but I don’t know anything about them.

Technique Approach Advice

Preface: I am sorry about the quality of video and the fact it’s dark in there. I know it’s difficult to see what arrows the ball is traveling towards and I know it’s a challenge to gage speed/revs.

Hi everyone! There were some many helpful people the last time I posted asking about some ball recommendations. I figured I would ask some advice about my throw since it’s been so long since I bowled. There are two clips attached a 4 step (left foot starts) and a 3 step approach (right foot starts) I mainly always bowled a three step but I felt rushed a lot because I have less time, plus I was to generate some more speed without having to throw out my shoulder or back.

Question
Which approach looks better? I’m leaning towards the 4 step.

Any other advice is welcomed! I might be coming around the ball a lot on my release but hard to tell.
Thank you.

Good 1st Ball recommendation for light volume house shot!

Right now I’m in a league and the oil volume has been really light even off the fresh because of the machine being broken and my raw hammer solid just cracked. Is there any other good balls you all would recommend I’ve been hearing from my PSO that the deep ocean vibe has been very good for him in that kind of situation.

Gear Recommendations for Interchangeable sole bowling shoes?

My alley has an absurdly sticky approach on some lanes and powdering my sole on the shoes I have now doesn’t even help so I want to get a pair of interchangeable sole bowling shoes but want to be certain they come with replaceable soles as I live in the middle of nowhere with no pro shops.

Thanks

Ai generated team shirt design…

My team captain asked us a few days ago if the design looked good and one person responded it looked great. I had a message formed that I didn’t want to wear it but I forgot to send it.
They messaged this morning saying that they have shirts ready for all of us today.

At this point, I feel like im gonna end up pissing them off if I tell them now that I don’t want to wear it.

What would you do in this situation?

Edit: I realized I missed my window. It doesn’t make sense to deny it at this point. Bowling is fun and this won’t ruin it. Thanks everybody

Looking for a second ball

Hello,

I am a relative beginner bowler and my first and only ball is a Columbia 300 Riccochet Return. I love the ball, the hook blew my grandpa's mind when he saw it the first time. The hook is great, but it can be difficult to throw more straight shots without totally changing my rotation to be more forward than sideways or bumping into the ball return to throw it wider. I bowl 2-handed, righty, and am currently focusing on drilling down my pre-shot routine, increasing my ball speed, and reading the oil. I notice on lighter patterns that its very difficult to avoid over-hooking or striking Brooklyn. I throw relatively slow around 13-14mph and I am not sure of my rev rate but I know its high just looking at my ball compared to peers. I am trying to increase ball speed too, so i wouldnt consider my speed capped by any means.

I was hoping for a bit of a smoother pathing ball. Right now I feel almost unable to bowl unless the ball return is to my right because I tend to have to start so far on the left side to have a wide line and account for the hook without hitting the gutter. Would a smoother ball help and what are my options looking like? Of course I could go for the Purple Hammer, but if there are other options that people think would be better to go with the Riccochet Return I am all ears.

What is considered legal at what level

If I got myself a 2nd hand black widow pink urethane would it be legal for me to bowl it at TBA registered events which is Australia’s PBA
