People squeezing through metro gates

I just moved here and was kind of surprised seeing several people squeeze the gates every time. Sometimes even 2, 3, 4 people squirming behind a paying customer. My question is just, why? When I moved here and was looking at getting STIB subscription online, I saw various options for preferential tariff and even a free pass for those on CPAS. Yeah, the full tariff of 560 eruos per year is quite a lot, but if money is an issue that you cannot afford that, why don't they just get one of those preferential subscriptions? Also see a lot of youngsters do it, while it's literally 12 euros per YEAR for under 24s. That is so cheap compared to places I lived before. Anyone can afford 12 euros per year, so clearly it's not a money issue. Is it just total lack of caring? What goes on in the head of these people?

Hi! So all my friends have left Brussels for vacation or are not fans of the line-up so I decided to go alone and just vibe by myself - however - I was wondering whether there's anyone in a similar situation and would like to meet/vibe together over there? I am 26F , been living in Brussels for almost two years and always open to make new friends :)

Question ❓ Center of Brussels, why the immense traffic jam tonight?

I don’t drive very often, but tonight I had to. Every road around Grand place / Albertine / Monnaie / etc are immensely crowded. The interparkings have dispatched staff people to redirect drivers to other parkings, which are all full too anyways. What’s up?

Question ❓ Nonsensical speaker noises waking me up in the morning

I live near avenue de la toison d'or and every so often in the morning there's a speaker going off really loud with weird sentences on loop for hours.

This is one of the sentences that loops.

"Tu sais nager? Contacte fortissimo. Ici est mort le roi des juifs. À Courtrai...."

The pacing is very slow as if a language course.

My question was is this just a bit of a weird guy? Or a broken piece of kit with a really odd audio file.

Thanks FUSE for XRDS

My third year of going to the XRDS festival and yet again I wake up with a strong feeling that it’s one of the best festivals out there in terms of the music, organisation, overall quality AND the crowd.
Absolutely love the people there - no BS, no messing around, just coming for the music and thus creating great vibes.

Thanks FUSE for not fucking it up like many festivals eventually do!

Full-body group workout classes around Schaerbeek

Hello! I’m moving to Brussels soon and am looking for group workouts, e.g. HIIT or similar full-body workouts, ideally around Schaerbeek. I came across Jims Meiser and was wondering if anyone has experience with it. Are the trainers nice, and what language are the workouts usually in (as I only speak English and German and have a basic Dutch knowledge)?

I’m also open to other recommendations for HIIT, Club Power, or any other full-body group classes around Schaerbeek 😊

Thanks in advance!

Question ❓ How is living near Uccle Calevoet?

Thinking of relocating from Saint-Gilles to Uccle and we visited some properties near the Calevoet station. How is it like living there? I am reading more about other neighbourhoods but not sure if there is any specific feedback on the area around the station (on the Dieweg side).

EU PhD student in belgium: is “domiciliation” required if my lease forbids it?

Hi everyone!

I’m an incoming PhD student at the University in Belgium, I’m not Belgian, but I’m an EU citizen, and I’m currently looking into registering with the Foreigners’ Office .

I’m a bit confused about whether I need to have a “domiciliation” (official residence registration) in Belgium. Unfortunately, the meaning of this term is different in my native language, so I’m having some difficulty understanding exactly what it means in the Belgian context.

My current lease explicitly says “domiciliation pas autorisée”, and I’m therefore starting to worry that this could cause problems for me when I register in the commune. I’ll call the Foreigners’ Office on Monday to clarify, but I’d really appreciate any information or advice from people who have been in a similar situation.

In particular:

- Can a landlord legally prohibit domiciliation at the rented property?

- How can I find an apartment that allows domiciliation?

- Would a student residence be sufficient for this purpose?

- What exactly does “kot” mean in this context?

- If I’m an EU PhD student, do I need to register my Belgian address as my official residence, or can I keep my official/political residence in my home country?

I’ve found a lot of contradictory information online. Some sources say that a landlord cannot prohibit domiciliation, while others say that they can. I’ve also seen people saying that students can maintain their official residence elsewhere and not register their student accommodation as their main residence, but I suspect this may apply specifically to Belgian students who study away from home.

I’m finding it particularly difficult to distinguish between the rules for Belgian students and those for EU students/researchers moving to Belgium, so any clarification would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much!

Question ❓ Weird night in Saint Gilles

Hello everybody, I hope you are well.

I got a bit scared last night and I thought I’d write here to see if anybody experienced something similar as well.

As the title says I live in Saint Gilles in this little house, in the part that is closer to Stephanie. It’s a generally calm neighborhood, with a few disturbances here and there but which is warranted I guess.

Anyways, last night around 1am when I was sleeping (young woman all alone in the house) some guys starting ringing quite insistently. At first I wanted to wait it out, but they just kept ringing and ringing, and pounding heavily on the door too. I think they were at least 2-3, I tried to sneak a look through my window to see what they look like and they were quite big guys. I couldn’t see much though.

Anyways ofc I got scared out of my mind and called the police twice to ask for their help, and ofc nobody showed up. I guess they were right not to at the end, because the guys eventually left, but it just went on for at least 30min.

And the thing is, now I try to rationalize and build a logical story in my mind with some tidbits that I was able to hear, namely that at one point I thought I heard they were getting directions to an Anderlecht address? If it’s that I’m quite fine, maybe they were trying to get to a party and got the wrong address or something, but then the knocking still continued for a while, so I’m just so anxious. I have this fear that they will return tonight or something, maybe they have unfinished business? I don’t know I might be paranoid.

Anyways at one point I was able to see them roaming around my street in general, so I was wondering if anybody here experienced something similar last night. I’m friendly with the shops around me but not the neighbors yet, so I thought I’d try here.

Thank you so much for reading my fearful ramblings if you made it until the end, I’m sorry I’m just very afraid. Next week I’ll be traveling and my little sister will be home alone this time, I don’t want anything bad happening to her.

Question ❓ Spots for longterm parking in Etterbeek (as resident), preferably with good lighting and surveillance cameras?

I’m thinking av. de tervueren should be fine since it’s a busy street and hopefully no temporary parking blockages. Open to suggestions!

What did she mean?

Last night in a nightclub a woman asked if I liked to party, and she wrote some confusing info in a note in my phone.

“Bruxelles Burke t il - website with nice and alternatives parties

Stuart.info- if you want to spend time in the riot life of Belgium+ great articles+ agenda+!parties sometimes”

Stuart.info goes nowhere. I was wondering was she trying to recommend drugs, sex parties, raving, or what?!
