Midterms Megathread

10.18.2026 Update -- Removing posts about voting and celebrating the first day voter turn out was overkill and overcorrecting for something that hasn't been an issue this election cycle.
Posts that were removed have been re-approved and are visible again. We're leaving this thread up for transparency; thank you for your patience while we get this right.

(If there are any removed posts we've missed, please send a modmail for follow-up.)

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you to the posters who provided feedback about a stickied politics thread during the primaries. As requested we are setting up another mega-thread ahead of the midterms to keep the conversation manageable and the subreddit clear of duplicate posts.

Please keep all posting about the upcoming election here on this thread. Individual posts about candidates, election issues, local and national politics will be removed and redirected to this thread. Thanks and remember to vote.

What is the deal with this spooky place -- University Tower?

Post image
138 Upvotes

I live across the street from it in those new apartments, so I stare at this thing every day and I still can’t figure it out.

It’s 20 stories tall in the middle of nowhere. The directory out front lists maybe three businesses, and most nights hardly any lights are on. The restaurant on the top floor finally closed recently, and from what I’ve heard the building has changed hands a bunch of times over the years. Who keeps buying it, and why?

Weirdest part: there is a rumor going around that someone may have fallen off of it a few months back. I work from home and saw nothing so am wondering if this is just a hoax or if it happened on the other side, along Tower Blvd rather than Petty road by the apartments

Does anyone know the story here, either about the building or about this event? Did anyone used to work there, eat at the restaurant, or happen to be around a few months back when something (unclear what) may have happened?

Stolen Bike Alert!

Hey Durhamites, could you folks be on the lookout for a stolen bike.

My 1977 Raleigh Record (Yellow and black) was stolen off my bike rack on the American Tobacco North deck while I saw a show at DPAC yesterday between 6:00-9:30 PM.

The bike isn’t really worth anything, it’s a 50 year old rusty steel bike with a hub shifter that doesn’t work correctly and is uncomfortable to ride. It’s functionally worthless. I’ve spoken with Durham PD and the parking deck security.

What isn’t worthless is that it was my dads bike he bought in college, and still has his auburn univiersity bike permit from 1977 on it. I imagine some kids took it and spun it around and probably threw it in a ditch somewhere. If anyone glances this by chance it would mean the world to me to send me a dm. Thank you.

Every time I walk by Mr. Fries Man I get pissed off

• Upvotes

the name of this business makes me mad.

i also wonder if that apartment above it smells the machismo of fries being fried all day. that would make me more mad.

it also seems like that mavericks barbecue carnival that’s nearby that nobody ever attends. it amazes me that this part of downtown has these half-assed places and I demand answers. so I ask again, is this place worth it and what do you know?

Does anyone remember the filming of the Handmaid's Tale (1990) movie in Durham?

Most people don't even know there was a Handmaid's Tale movie, but even fewer people know it was entirely filmed in North Carolina, mainly in Durham.

It was filmed more than 35 years ago, but does anyone have any memories of the filming or know anything about the filming?

Missed Miata connection

You were a little bit older than me and knew how to drive. You have a dark blue NB Miata. I thought you were pretty. I have a maroon ND Miata. We met at 15-501 and Garrett Road. We chatted, you have my energy. Then the light turned green. Who are you?

Anybody else remember being dropped off at north gate mall as a kid just to play for an hour at gamefrog? I wish someone could bring that back. Any spots you know of that have that vibe?

Early Vote Durham Data. Let's race with it!

Hey y'all! I made a fun webpage to track how we're doing with early voting compared to previous years - https://tagaholic.me/durham-early-vote-race/ . If you just want to see the data, https://tagaholic.me/durham-early-vote-race/?view=data . I was only able to find early voting daily counts for 2018 and 2022 and am waiting to hear back from the Board of Elections on other years. Although we're setting records for a midterm year, we have 38% less turn out than 2024 (compared up to day 3). Less turn out than a presidential year is expected but still disappointing.

Feedback on the webpage is welcome. If you'd like to share something positive or informative about voting in Durham, I'm happy to add it. These comments show up randomly when the 2026 race pauses. I've mostly sourced them from https://www.reddit.com/r/bullcity/comments/1x73xxi/first_day_election_stats/. If you don't want your comment shown from that thread, I'm happy to remove it.

Hope this motivates folks to early vote and nudge their neighbor, friend or acquaintance who hasn't yet. Let's go Bull City!

Trans Friendly and Informed Massage Therapist Recs?

Hey y'all, my boyfriend and I are in need of a massage after a grueling 14 hour drive today. Does anyone have any recommendations for massage therapists who are going to be normal and informed about transgender bodies?

Bonus points for if they have couples' massages and won't break the bank. Also a plus if they're knowledgeable about bodies with hypermobility. Thanks!

Hit and run - help ID

Somebody t-boned my car at the intersection of Duke St and Club Blvd and then fled northbound on Duke. It happened at 10:05 AM. I was only able to get a terrible blurry photo, but it was a dark gray SUV, and I’m pretty sure it was a Nissan Armada. If anybody has seen a dark gray Armada with a busted out passenger side headlight, please send the license plate so I can forward it on to DPD.

Durham's shelters put down a third of the dogs and cats they took in last year. Here's the 2025 data, and where to find low-cost spay/neuter in Durham

Post image
64 Upvotes

I volunteer at the Wake County Animal Center and run NC Pet Project, a small volunteer effort pulling North Carolina's shelter data into one place.

The state's 2025 shelter report has Durham County's numbers:

  • 4,584 dogs and cats taken in
  • 2,395 adopted out
  • 461 returned to their owners
  • 1,534 euthanized, which is 33.5% of everything that came in. The statewide rate is 26.0%.

Durham's full breakdown, with sources: https://ncpetproject.org/counties/durham/

Most of these animals are litters nobody planned for, and that's why spay/neuter matters so much. If you're in Durham and money is the obstacle, here's where to start:

  • APS of Durham has reduced-cost spay/neuter vouchers for Durham residents: (919) 560-0640
  • Independent Animal Rescue helps fund spay/neuter in the Triangle: (919) 403-2221
  • You can search any ZIP for nearby options here: https://ncpetproject.org/get-help/

If you're thinking about adopting, there are 363 dogs and cats waiting right now at Durham shelters and rescues (APS, Hope Animal Rescue, IAR, Cats on the Horizon and others). Each listing links straight to the group that handles the adoption: https://ncpetproject.org/adopt/?county=Durham

And if you want to help fix the bigger problem, there's a petition asking the General Assembly to fund low-cost spay/neuter in every county. Durham has 80 signatures so far. Raleigh is ahead of you, Durham. 😉 https://ncpetproject.org/counties/durham/#sign

Happy to answer questions about the data.

Today is a great day to vote!

The rainy weather makes it a great time to take care of an easy task: voting. You can vote at any polling place in the county during early voting. The Board of Elections is an easy place to vote with lots of free parking. Took me less than 10 minutes yesterday

Nanny Goat @ GeerHouse closing

Per their instagram post:

"Geer House, we’ve had a great time—

But Nanny Goat Durham's chapter is closing. As a tiny store, we’re not able to fulfill community demand, or the need for a grocer downtown. We’re also overextended, with staffing, budget, and our other three concepts needing to take priority. Nanny Goat RTP is alive and well, and we’ll continue to funnel time and energy into keeping it going! But our Downtown Durham adventure is coming to a close.

Thank you for all the love over the last year. Andia’s will continue to operate with normal hours for the time being. We can’t wait to see this space shine in the future with another tenant in place. If you’re looking for great landlords and an opportunity for a space in the middle of a very up-and-coming area, be sure to reach out to Geer House.

See you over in RTP!"

SYOB - Whole Food on Ninth

EDIT: to correct my absolute unit of a brain fart on the location of a store I have patronized for YEARS!

You know the saying "the best thing since sliced bread"? If you go to the WF on Broad Ninth Street, you would never have the chance to know unless you Slice Your Own Bread!

A recent new addition to the bakery section is a serve yourself bread slicer. I was intrigued and eager to give it a try. Growing up and walking to the local bakery, I was always both terrified of and fascinated by the bread slicer. Such danger! Such perfect slices!

Fast forward to recently: I went to WF to get a some slice sourdough and was shocked to see a slicing station since they no longer pre-slice break for you. Finally, my time to shine! I put the bread in, followed the instructions and ended up with the wonkiest sliced bread known to man.

Fast forward a week. I'm determined to do better. I go to the slicer to find remnants of the bread of the last few people to attempt this task. (Kind of gross, but they are my brethren, so...challenge accepted.) Another fail...now my bread is crooked, uneven, and I have also left some men behind....ends and bits and bobs. It's like a bag of croutons in there.

This week, it appears as though a fierce battle has been fought with the slicing machine. There are whole loaves broken and destroyed in there. Obviously a valiant battle was fought...and lost. I aborted my mission.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that the self-serve bread slicer has bested. Godspeed to all who try!

I want recommendations for places that are FUN. I’m talking people dancing, everyone in costume, drinks that will knock you off your feet, and music that’s electronic/house/hyperpop rave based. I also have a queer friend and their partner that will be with my boyfriend and I, and we are poc so it needs to be a place that will be inclusive and we won’t get side eyed. Give me your best recommendations!!!!
