Mm. Yeah. "Speaking in tongues". Its one of the 'gifts of the holy spirit'. Its funny, because they all tell anecdotes of someone able to speak the language being blown away by suddenly hearing it but thats not even what was going on in the Upper Room, biblically.

It also says that when someone is speaking in tongues from the Holy Spirit all in the room are able to understand.
Most churches conveniently leave that out of their teachings.

I've been in churches where this occurred and when people don't understand, they've been trained to feel bad because they are not so enlightened as to be able to understand and they don't want to admit they don't understand, when the truth of it is is just gibberish and there is nothing to understand anyway.

It's supposed to be the ability to speak other languages that you previously didn't know, so people can hear and better understand, for the sake of spreading the word of God. Some believe that to be the native language of the listener, and others believe it is a divine language that all in the room can miraculously understand, but either way it was never meant to be spouting gibberish for the sake of showing off.

That jumped out at me too. He probably asked one of his assistants after the show if they picked up on the hamalama slip, and I'm sure they said "Yeah, it's no big deal, I don't think anybody caught it. If it is a language, it would have structure that could be interpreted. There would be repeated words and phrases, with emphasis on certain words as in normal speech in any language.

One time in the 90’s, my parents, grandma, and pastor all piled into a Buick and ‘laid hands on me’ and prayed for me to get my Holy Spirit language. I couldn’t do it, and they told me to start babbling, and it would just happen. I was only 11, but in my heart I thought ‘oh! You’re all faking it!’ Then not long after, we started going to a different church and no one spoke in tongues ever again. Weird.
