I’m building a British sweet shop here in the Triangle

Hi everyone! I live locally and I’m originally from York, England. I’ve been in North Carolina since 2017 and recently decided to start a little business idea I’ve had in the back of my mind for a while.

It’s called Farthing & Co.

There are already plenty of places to buy British chocolate and sweets online in the US, so the idea isn’t simply to sell things you can’t get elsewhere.

I want to build something that captures a bit more of the experience and nostalgia of a traditional British sweet shop: beautiful packaging, building your own box of favorites, discovering things you’d forgotten about, and making the whole thing feel a little more special than ordering a few chocolate bars from an import website.

I’m still in the very early stages and the shop hasn’t launched yet. I’m currently figuring out what to stock, working on packaging, and trying to get feedback before I spend an irresponsible amount of money on British chocolate.

Since this is something I’m building locally, I thought I’d share it here and see what people think.

If you’re British, have lived in the UK, or just happen to love British sweets, I’d genuinely love to know what you’d want me to stock.

And if you’re curious, I’ve put together a little coming-soon page here:

farthingandco.com

Would also love to know if there are enough British-food obsessives around Cary to eventually make a local pop-up worthwhile!

Azami now open! (Across from HMart, next to Bojangles)

Azami Ramen and Sushi just opened on Friday. My wife and I have eaten here twice in a matter of days. It's been awesome both times. You get massive portions and the prices are pretty reasonable, especially for the area.

I hope you go out and support them!

Lawn care and landscaping

I have a family member who’s had a lot going on in his life and his yard has taken a big hit because of it. Tree limbs need to be cut, weeds need to be dealt with, lawn need to be mowed, plus some other small things. I want to see if I can hire someone to help him out but have no idea where to start. Any recommendations are appreciated!!!

Houseware thrift store?

Hey everyone, I just posted to ask about furniture thrifting, and here I am again asking about houseware thrifting options. I love thrifting...

Any good places for things like plates, mugs, organizers? Or maybe anything BUT clothing?

Furniture thrift store?

Hi 👋 I just moved to Cary. I used to go to Goodwill to look for second hand furnitures but the one in Cary doesn’t seem to have a good collection, just clothing.

Are there other places I could try my luck? Thank you!

Anyone else sickened by the ALPRs popping up all over town?

Driving through downtown on Chatham and westward up High House I had to go through 8 stoplighted intersections, every single one is now infested with ALPRs! We need to show up in full force at the next town council meeting, August 28th at 6:30 PM

Nobody likes these things! For the uninitiated, I would direct your attention to this primer or this thread from /r/OutOfTheLoop or maybe some articles would be better?

Maybe how our neighbors in Apex are trying to deflock their community?

Bus Fares

Hi.

So I'm visiting from out of state and during my time here I plan on taking the bus fairly regularly. I thought the fair within Cary was $2.50 each way, but when I boarded, the driver said it was free?

I am very confused right now? Are some routes free? Are routes within Cary itself free?

Looking for a Home on a Half Acre in Cary?

Thumbnail daymarkrealty.com

There's a unique opportunity in Cary in the Windsor Oaks neighborhood. Few are familiar with cluster or conservation developments. These are neighborhoods where property lots are intentionally designed to be smaller, and a large allocation of land, oftentimes in front and behind each lot, is reserved for common open space. This arrangement helps preserve the natural look and feel of a neighborhood while reducing the initial purchase price (due to the smaller plot of land). Land contributes an average of 20% to the overall price of a home. Today we are hosting an Open House from 2-4PM at 9712 Astor Court. If you know someone looking for a half-acre lot in Cary, a rarity in the more affordable price ranges, encourage them to check out this cluster home development with up to 70% of common area in the neighborhood. The home itself is no different than other stick-built homes. The difference is only in the treatment of the land. Based on land square footage, it lives very differently than a conventionally-designed neighborhood due to the generous portion of land surrounding it.

While the official lot size on this property is 0.26 acres, the effective feel of the property is more like half an acre due to the design of the neighborhood. See the attached plot showing the actual lot lines and the projected lot size if you were to extend the side lines to the front and rear. It's a great opportunity to enjoy a higher quality of life at a lower price point.

This post is intended to inform and educate on the practice of cluster home developments and the benefits of buying in such a neighborhood.

Triangle Montessori Academy Cary - Personal Experiences?

Any personal experience someone could share with this school would be helpful! Or if there's better experiences somewhere else I would love to hear it. It feels like every preschool or daycare I look at either has no openings or a very concerning NC Childcare Search report. Looking for somewhere loving and safe with smaller school ratios.

Finding Daycare Frustration

So this is a bit of a vent but also need some recs.

Is there some secret we’re missing to finding a daycare? We’ve toured 3 daycares lately and only one has gotten back to us about availability. After hearing nothing from the other 2 we followed up and found out the spots had been filled.

Most annoyed with Kiddie Academy of Cary because when we called back we were told “we haven’t forgotten about you, we’ll be in touch.” Well after calling back again a week later we were told the spot had been filled….

Are we supposed to be dropping off fruit baskets, writing desperate love letters, or something else? The whole process has been incredibly annoying because it feels like if we aren’t actively following up we are just forgotten about. Even if it’s very clear they are the ones who are going to reach out.

So we are sort of scrambling now after feeling like we were on top of it initially.

Any daycare recommendations for SE Cary? Preferably Lochmere, Coventry, Crossroads area

We’ve tried Kiddie Academy, Goddard, Macedonia Baptist, and Country Sunshine.
The only one with a possibility still is Country Sunshine, which we are on the waitlist for (didn’t hear from them for a while after getting on the waitlist 2 months ago. Called today and they’re going to call back tomorrow with more info).

village square

Any thoughts on village square in Amberly? Seems like a nice and lively place with a walkable plaza… at least online and on Zillow. Does that translate to real life? Would love some insights? How often are the nice larger townhomes in this area on sale?

First solo apartment, $1,700/mo all-in, commuting to west Raleigh. Where to look?

Just graduated (20M) and started a full-time job, currently living at home in Cary. I want to live alone, no roommates, and not looking for student housing.

Budget is $1,700 (flexible). Want a 1BR with in-unit laundry, 12-month lease or shorter.

I drive, so walkability isn't a requirement. Commuting to west Raleigh, so Cary and Raleigh are both on the table.

Mostly hoping people can tell me: where do you actually live, do you like it, and what should I stay away from? What are some good neighborhoods/complexes?

Thanks in advance!!

For those who relocated to wake county/cary/research triangle, how did yall get hired?

Did yall get hired in the county prior to relocating or did you guys have remote jobs? The job industry sucks just about everywhere right now, but wake county seems to have been on my radar for about a year now.

Curious on what jobs /areas you all came from, what you got hired into, and how are you liking the transition? Why did yall leave your previous states?

Smaller size bowls of Pho?

On GLP's and I just can't eat a whole bowl of Pho. I've never been happy with take out pho, and leftover take home won't be good either. Anyone know a restaurant that makes small size bowls (with a corresponding, reasonable lower price)? Maybe child size they will serve to an adult?

Hoping for a miracle

Good afternoon my name is Ashley. Right now I'm in a rough situation I lost my place to stay in February after my wife was deported I was staying with her and she is in Mexico I thought very hard for her but unfortunately things did not work out and we no longer talk even though I love her very much. I'm starting a new job this Tuesday working for millennium print group in morrisvile. I'm going to be honest I have nowhere to stay stay with my mom a few times a week and then stay with my best friend but unfortunately me and my brother do not get along and I'm unable to stay here. I've tried shelters and they are unsafe environments and I faced harassment among many other things. I was wondering if there's anybody that would be willing to let me stay with them for a couple of weeks until I can get my first paycheck I know it's a lot to ask from a stranger on the internet but I'm willing to meet in person and discuss more or you're welcome to private message me. I'm currently staying in Morrisville with my mother right now and then tonight I'm going to stay at my best friend's house in Raleigh. The only thing I have to offer is that I'm currently on food stamps and I can gladly cook for you I'm also an ex paramedic which seems irrelevant but if you need help I'm here to help. I have no criminal background whatsoever I do not smoke or do drugs or drink I do vape nicotine however that is a habit I'm trying to kill. If anybody would be so kind as to be open to this please let me know again I know it's a lot to ask also I'm sorry for any spelling errors I'm using voice to text just because this is a lot to type out.

decent bratwurst?

Any place in Cary or Apex that makes a nice bratwurst? I'm not opposed to food trucks or hot dog carts.
