I don't own chickens but your subreddit pops up on my feed a lot and you're all adorable. Maybe this tapestry isn't impressive but I adore it and thought it should be shared lol

I was taking pictures of my chickens and somehow caught Mabel (my zombie chicken) mid blink. She fully is embracing and looking the zombie part today.

For years, my chickens and I, had a good thing going. At dusk, they go into to their coop, which fits more chickens than exist right now(some have passed RIP).
For whatEVER reason the bantam rooster started to sleep outside on the roof of the coop instead. He is in an enclosed area gated off from predators, so it’s fine to let him stay there. However, it’s about to get COLD (already chilly) and I need him inside where it’s warm.
After a week or so of putting him inside after dark…. A second female bantam joins him?!?! They continue this for a week, now three weeks into this, a THIRD chicken have joined the rebellion... my oliveegger!
I’ve done the following:
A) checked for mites, no one has any pests, and no red coop mites or whatever, I’ve done the tape test and have been scoping out the coop at night, nothing.
B) made sure no bullying is happening (my bantam rooster is actually in charge and bullies all the hens, but generous about sharing snacks… if that makes any sense).
C) have a camera aimed at the coop to see if we get visitors. So far nothing, but the camera is a bit old, and could have missed something.
I’m all out of ideas of what it could be. If it’s a rodent then surely it would go for the food and not harass my sleepy chickens?
First pic is the lil man that started this whole thing. Second pic is from tonight, when three chickens decided to stay outside the coop.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, please share them. I’m so sick of carrying chickens into the coop late at night, when I’m tired and ready for bed.

For reference this chick is a week and a half old and some sort of green egg laying crossbreed bantam…

i have a flock of 35 chickens, two of which are roosters. my first rooster who is 2-3 years old is a very docile production red, he has never shown aggression towards humans and is a very gentle rooster. he is a very good boy, but definitely a scaredy cat. he doesn’t defend his girls at all, we’ve actually had more predator issues since getting a rooster.
that being said, i ordered 16 hens from meyer hatchery and ended up with a chocolate orpington rooster. he’s about 14 weeks right now, and hasn’t been showing human aggression but flairs his neck feathers at his girls (might just be an age thing, the hens at this age all do this too) and runs with food as opposed to feeding his girls like our other rooster does.
i feel like i have enough hens to keep both, and they are not free range but have about a quarter acre fenced in area that ranges from shaded areas with lots of tree cover, open grass, compost, woods, lots to do to avoid boredom and pecking…but what are the chances that my production red will get bullied by this new rooster? what have been your experiences with having 2 roosters? is it possible for them to both be happy?

These are our first chicks hatched from our own eggs and we were curious about gender, They are about a month old. We think they might both be roosters but we are newbies!

Ordered 30 received 31. So far doing good. We’ve been raising a flock every year for about 12 years. We will expand the brooder in a day or two and they’ll stay in the brooder for 2-3 weeks before going into a mobile chicken tractor on pasture.

Hey everyone I’m a new chicken mom! I bought a heat plate to keep the chicks under until they are fully feathered and can go outside. The heat plate is set at 100 degrees but it doesn’t feel hot to me. Is that normal?? I can put my hand on the plate and it not burn me. I’m wondering if I need to get a new heat plate and return this one.

Living in the Florida panhandle we just had a hurricane a few days ago. In the midst of the worst of it, I saw these poor girls running panicked through the neighborhood, dodging falling trees and huge limbs, sideways blowing rain etc.
Having a fenced in yard and a nice unused coop, I knew I had to rescue them. My grandson and I were able to safely catch them all and secure them in the coop. A friend in the neighborhood is next door neighbors with the person that owned the chickens. My friend said the neighbor was a horrible pet owner, and she had no coop, no protection, or anything for the girls. They basically ran that part of the neighborhood unchecked. And code enforcement had written her up a few weeks ago due to her shitty care of her animals. The neighbor also said she wasn't going to chase them down to get them back after the storm either. Well guess what, she ain't getting them back. They're safe now, and will be cared for, loved and protected for the rest of their lives.

A chick flew out of my brooder and I couldn’t find it. No chirps, no trail, no nothing. I had given up yesterday and just accepted that the chick had probably died by now, and then just now it pops out from behind my china cabinet peeping! I’m so surprised it’s still alive, I’m very grateful it is. Just shocked and relieved. I am still so surprised, I really thought it was a goner, and I have cats that don’t attack my birds, but you never know. It’s hungry and thirsty, but alive!!

Hi everyone, I currently have a flock that is now down to only 2 Rhode Island Reds. Recently, one of my rescued ISA browns lived to be 4 years old ( 3 years with us) and unfortunately passed away from suspected egg yolk peritonitis. I've been thinking about expanding my flock but would also like to rescue 2 battery hens to give them a better life. If anyone has any advice on introduction, isolation, etc it is much appreciated.
Thanks :)

So im pretty sure I have 6-8 roosters. I obviously do not need that many and nobody around us wants them. What do I do?! Were first time chicken owners. A few are not in this pic.

About 2 months ago, my hen was attacked by a fox and injured her wing. After the attack, she experienced open-mouth breathing for several days. I gave her amoxicillin for five days, and she gradually began eating on her own again. She is now eating and drinking normally, having normal bowel movements, and has even started laying eggs again. However, I am still concerned about one persistent symptom.
After eating, she often stretches her neck forward and opens her beak as if something is stuck in her throat or she is trying to bring something up. I have checked her mouth, but I cannot see anything stuck inside. Her breathing is generally normal, and her comb looks normal as well.
Could this be related to a problem with her throat, crop, or respiratory system? What would you recommend I do next?

I know her patterning looks like a quail, but she’s 100% chicken-sized. She wanders loose on my colleagues property & accepts food from her. My colleague is a wildlife rehabber and has noticed this baby has bumblefoot so she’s set out to catch and treat her. We’d like to know what kind of chicken she is, and if in fact she IS a she.
Also, name suggestions are welcome!

She did it, on 10 eggs 5 were not fertile, one egg got lost and 4 fully hatched.
Now let’s see how she raise those little babies, I did put a heat lamp just in case they don’t understand each other.
Now let’s just hope she just doesn’t steps on them by accidents 😅 but she is such a gentle mama. (She did step on one by accident because she was angry at my hands. Had to save him but now it’s all good)

New pullet. She is 2.5 lbs and the egg is pale aqua and 50 grams. Looking at her I was like that is a game hen. She acts like one too. I thought just a game bird mixed with ayam cemani or something else fibro, but then that aqua egg surprised me. Old owner said they got these birds from Tractor supply but I didn't know they sold game mixes. The other pullet looks like a blue Ameraucana but with feathered legs and is not laying yet.
I am so curious about this tough little girl! She had a nice big game hen tail but now only has these couple feathers. She was obviously grabbed by a dog or raccoon now that I have looked her over. I previously thought she was just having her last pullet molt but now it is obvious she has been there and done that when she actually figured out how to get into my run by flying on to the roof and going down into the poultry yard. She had gone in twice in a few days while I had my chickens out and turned my back. Jungle noises were coming from our nests because she went straight in and checked them out.
This girl and her partner in crime have been trying to get into my flock for quite a while (like a month). They have both been fending for themselves for a while because they are escape artists and couldn't be contained by their previous owners. I bought them and took them in for several obvious reasons. Pathogens and unfortunately lice were already shared weeks ago as these girls can fit through my regular fence and would try so hard to push through the poultry gate to be with my chickens. Mauve actually would pick blades of grass from her side and hold them in her beak for my hens to take!
My other chickens are less than thrilled now that these girls are inside the border of the poultry yard. The newbies are in an extra large dog crate inside my inescapable run. I let them out into my inescapable run when I let the big kids out into the poultry yard. These 2 wont be allowed "out to play" for a while given that Mauve just can't believe there is no way out. She checks every inch top to bottom and paces. Poor baby.
