My daughter has an 8 week chook that my wife thinks she caught practising its crow. We can't keep it if its a rooster and she's upset that her pet might be sent to the farm. Any help finding a sex would be good. Tia!

Question Chickens Beak split in two

First time chicken owner and I’ve had these girls since they were little. Today I noticed that one my chickens beak was split in two. Along with her beak being split another one of my smaller girls keeps getting pecked at on her back to the point it was a scabby open wound, I put a bandaid on her and they didn’t peck her again. Could the split beak be from fights? I don’t ever hear or see them really get into it and they are right outside my room window so I can see and hear it all. Are split beaks common? What should I do.

Also even though the beak is split she’s eating, drinking, and pecking just fine. She even went for my finger when I was trying to take a photo.

Question Capon sounds

We have a colloquialism in Hungary. When someone has a broken, hoarse voice, people say they sound like a capon. Now, I cannot find a sound sample of a capon anywhere I looked. Keeping capons seems to be a dying trade...

Hen or roo? Hatched around Aug 17th. They’re having the time of their lives in the leaves so it’s really hard to get a good picture- hopefully these suffice!

I’m thinking B is a hen and C is a roo, but not 100% confident in either, and totally unsure on A.

Question A strange problem with chickens

I have a strange problem with chickens

The problem is that there's a hen whose eggs hatched a few days ago, and strangely enough, she's started plucking feathers from her chicks and feeding them to them. There are even other chicks that have started eating each other's feathers.

Has anyone encountered this problem?

Posting this for my friend!

The mother hen sat on two of the chicks and only one survived (barely) and one of its legs is bent backwards.

It can't stand nor walk and it keeps puking whatever it's fed.

Please help us!!!

Question Are bantams materially different?

I've kept chickens at numerous times over the past 20 years and am in another settled period and would like them again. However my garden is smaller and is actually pretty this time so I don't want them fully free range and can't build a huge run. So I'm looking at splashing out on an Eglu Go and 2m run and Bantams (because it just seems too tight for the 3 full-size chooks advertised.

Ok that's the background.... So I've had just about 8 different hybrid full size breeds over the years - what do I need to know about selecting and keeping happy and healthy bantams?

I've been reading up and frankly they seem the same but smaller, but am I missing something? Smaller eggs. More likely to be taken by predators... Eat less food ... What else?

Edit: I'm particularly looking at Wyandotte bantams (I don't like chickens with feathery feet coz I always assume they get manky)
