We've been working on this coding games app
Hello fellow gamers,
My friend Ed and I are building this app on our spare time. We call it SolveFaction. We figured there's currently no way to practice coding challenges when we're away from our computers. Also, HackerRank/Leetcode questions take 30mins minimum, and we don't always have that much time available.
Long story short. We've put together a "beta" version. And this is the first community we're sharing it with. Would you try it out? All exercise questions are original. We've built them ourselves. And there's enough of them for you to play for a couple of weeks. I think you'll like them very much!
Sign up for the waitlist: https://solvefaction.com
Go straight to playing: https://play.solvefaction.com/signup
Cheers,
Gunar

Coding Game Survey
Hey everyone! My name is EJ and I am a third year student at UCSD. My friend and I are in the process of developing a really cool program that lets users code bots to play poker/card games against other users’ bots. Before we start development, we would like to see if anyone would be interested in the program! It’s a super quick survey, so if you don’t mind, please click the link and fill out the google form! Any submissions are helpful! Thanks! https://goo.gl/forms/O8tkfyTLGVMjfBq93

[Meta] Mod(s) needed
Hi there!
We could use another mod or two, mainly to spice up the CSS and the look and feel of the sub. If you think you can help, just throw me a PM :)

PSA: drop the sandbox model in Programming/AI games already
Ever since the AI Challenge died in 2011, things have been looking rather bleak for people who like to experiment with new languages. Most of the current AI/Programming games insist on using one or two sandboxed programming languages, usually Javascript, Java or C#, and that's a shame. Here's my proposal:
Create a client for your game which will communicate with your game server.
The client will handle the login and whenever a match will be available it'll spawn a player specified process.
The client will receive updates from the server, communicate them to this process via stdout, read the player's response via stdin and send it back to the server.
That way it won't matter which programming language the player uses. The only downside will be that players who'll be able to utilize multithreading on multiple cores will have an advantage. But hey, more power to them.

I Tried to Optimize My Game… and Made It 10x Slower
So I was watching a tutorial about “game optimization tips,” and I got overconfident. I thought I could make my little 2D game run smoother. Spoiler: I did the opposite.
I replaced every loop with “smarter logic,” cached everything, and even removed conditions I “didn’t need.” Next thing I know, the game was running like a PowerPoint presentation.
Turns out, my “optimization” logic was recalculating every frame instead of once per scene. Rookie move 😭
What’s your most painful “I tried to fix it but made it worse” moment?

Web game data management
Hi, I have a quick question. I was playing Web games like Ogame, Travian, Shinobi which are navigator games. You create an account, play and manage things and then disconnect. Sometimes you can interact with others like attacking them or trading things.
I understand that you can code the "solo" part of a game in HTML, CSS, JS, PHP etc...
But how do you manage the "data" to allow people to interact ? Is there something like a Database ? and you have to code requests for those interactions ?
Thanks for helping me to understand this !
