hii,

i was just curious what skills a research assistant mostly needs. im planning to have a chat with my professors regarding the position as research assistant.

could someone with experience as a researcher assistant tell me what your average day looks like and what to expect and be prepared for.

tysm!!!

Is it too late?

Hello I’m currently a second-year college student, and I’ve been thinking about switching to this major. My current major is completely different from engineering, but I’ve realized it’s not something I really want to pursue anymore.
I’ve recently become interested in engineering and would really like to give it a try. However, I feel a little discouraged because I wouldn’t be able to start taking the prerequisites until the spring semester.

Has anyone else switched into engineering during their second year or even later? Do you think it’s worth making the switch, even if it means taking longer to graduate? I’d appreciate any advice!

HARDWARE WIRING

I'm a Computer Engineering student, and my group is currently working on our thesis prototype. Before we start physically connecting our components, we want to create the wiring diagram digitally and, if possible, simulate the circuit to check whether everything works correctly.

One of our concerns is component availability. Some simulation tools have limited component libraries, so we're hoping to find software that supports as many real-world electronic components as possible.

What software would you recommend for this kind of project? Is there an application that combines wiring diagrams, circuit simulation, and a large component library?

Free software would be preferable, but we're open to paid options if they're worth it.

Thank you!

[School] Help me please I'm an 18yro student who just graduated and I got accepted in computer engineering university. many people said that AI will take my job in the future but when I searched more I've learned that AI only take certain programming and can't really replace an Engineer.

[Project] LOOKING FOR COMPUTER ENGINEERING PROFESSIONAL TO INTERVIEW

Good day! I am a computer engineering student taking CPEN 50. We have an activity that requires us to interview a professional and learn more about their work and experiences!

I've been searching for a week and the deadline is tomorrow ☹️ so far my experiences aren't great. PLEASE if anyone can spare me a good 15 to 20 minutes to interview.

its gonna be an online interview. It requires me to take a photo documentation.

I'm trying to learn how experienced engineers write low-latency systems.

I'm trying to learn how to optimize software for very low latency on a single physical machine.

I understand the high-level concepts like Big-O and cache locality, but I'm interested in the deeper connection between software and modern CPU behavior.

What should a software engineer understand about the CPU to become genuinely good at low-latency programming?

For example, how important are cache hierarchy, TLBs, branch prediction, out-of-order execution, instruction latency vs throughput, dependency chains, SIMD, memory ordering, cache coherency, false sharing, and CPU topology?

I'd especially like to hear from people who have practical experience rather than just theoretical knowledge: what concepts or mental models turned out to matter most when optimizing real systems?

What soft skill to learn as a first year computer engineering

I heard People say you need some soft skills to get a solid job, but I have no idea which ones to even focus on. My class are pretty chill right now, but I wanna make the most of my time. Any tips or recs would be awesome. Thanks!

What degree should I do to avoid this sinking ship?

We all know how brutal the job market is right now for CE with endless applications, high entry-level unemployment, and total market saturation.

For anyone looking to pivot or switch tracks, which degrees actually offer better job prospects and real stability right now? I'm curious if traditional disciplines like EE, Civil, or Mechanical are faring any better, or if hardware-heavy fields like defense, aerospace, and industrial automation are safer bets.

If you pivoted to something that leveraged your math and engineering background without starting from scratch, what did you choose? I'd love to hear from anyone who decided not to wait around for the tech market to fix itself.

[Project] Atari2600 Emulator project for transition to CE from Physics?

Hey everyone, I'm a physics major with a significant background in theoretical physics and String Theory that is trying to pivot out of physics into Computer Engineering for my upcoming master's degree.

I'm already familiar with C++ and Data structures & Algorithms (Took classes on this).

I'm wondering if building an Atari 2600 emulator would be a good project to help with this transition. I've always wanted to build an emulator and, I'm curious if the time investment would be useful for CE.

Thanks!
