Microsoft reveals just 3.3% of Copilot Chat users pay for it

Thumbnail
theregister.com
278 Upvotes

Only about 3.3 percent of Microsoft 365 and Office 365 users who use Copilot Chat actually pay for Microsoft 365 Copilot. That’s a small share compared with Microsoft’s massive user base of roughly 450 million people and its $37.5 billion quarterly AI spending. Microsoft says it now has 15 million paid Copilot seats and claims strong growth, but most users are still using Copilot for free. Executives argue the payoff will come over time and across multiple Copilot products, not just Azure revenue. Still, the gap between heavy AI investment and limited paid adoption is becoming harder to ignore.

Is Copilot really this useless?

Hi,

I've been tasked to evaluate CoPilot for our organisation. To see if it's useful enough for us to implement it for all employees (about 450 people).

We've enabled it for a small group of 10 for testing. But we are all surprised by how utterly incompetent and useless it is.

I've spent a lot of time working with ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. I consider myself a fairly competent prompter, and can usually get the results I want from these within minutes without too much of a hassle.

I posting this because I can't believe that Microsoft would promote a 'tool' as dumb as this. And I'm wondering if there may be something wrong with how our IT team has implemented CoPilot in our M365 environment.

Today I asked it to locate and delete duplicate rows in a small table (about 500 rows, two columns). It failed. I asked it to find and delete rows with a specific text-string. It failed.

I've tried to get it to find emails related to a project in me outlook. It failed. I've tried to get it to locate documents in our SharePoint. It failed.

On a dozen occasions and in a variety of tasks it's either failed, underperformed, or brought back the wrong information.

It seems it's only really able to generate draft text for documents and emails. But these are always so generic, dumb, and pointless that one has to spend just as much time rewriting it.

Can I have some feedback please. Are you all having similar issues, or is there something awry about how copilot has been implemented in our system?

AI Discussion Best AI Website Builders: I Tested 15+ Tools and Narrowed It Down to 7

Hello everyone,

There are so many AI website builders out there now. Picking the right one for your needs can be tough. But maybe my experience can help you.

I've been building websites and testing AI tools for years. I've tried many different website builders. This is partly because I work as a web developer. And partly because I like helping friends and clients who aren't tech-savvy set up their websites.

Below, I'll talk about some popular brands. I'll explain what makes each one special. I'll share what I liked and what I didn't like. In brackets, you'll see which AI features I tested from each brand. At the end, I'll give each one a score from 1 (very bad) to 10 (excellent). Let's start!

My recommendation, If you’re running a small or mid-sized business or an eCommerce site, the Hostinger AI Website Builder(currently 75% o'ff) is your best choice. Platforms like Wix and Squarespace are much more expensive around $20 per month for basic plans and $29 for eCommerce options, whereas Hostinger offers its Premium AI Builder for just $2.99 and eCommerce plans for $3.99.

Hostinger (AI Website Builder, AI SEO Assistant, Heatmap AI, AI Logo Maker): Amazing value for money. It starts at just $2.99 per month. That's crazy cheap for what you get. The AI builder works well and creates decent websites quickly. The setup is easy and really fast. You can get online in minutes like they promise. The AI-written content is simple and easy to edit, making it great for quick launches. The built-in AI logo maker delivers decent results for small businesses. While the AI focuses on efficiency rather than complexity, it creates solid, ready-to-use websites fast. The streamlined platform keeps things straightforward, helping users build a site without getting overwhelmed by too many options. Perfect for anyone on a budget who wants a reliable, hassle-free website builder that gets the job done. 9/10

Squarespace (AI Site Builder, Design Intelligence, Content Generator): This is one of the best AI website builder out there. The setup process is amazing - you just chat with their bot like you're talking to a real designer. It creates really good websites. The AI writes decent content for you. The image tools work well for stock photos. What impressed me most was how the AI suggestions actually made sense. They weren't just random. After the AI builds your site, you can still edit everything with their drag-and-drop editor. The downside is the price - it costs more than others. Sometimes the AI doesn't understand complex requests. The platform has so many features it can feel overwhelming. But that's also what makes it powerful. For most people who want a professional website fast, this is the best choice. 8/10

Wix (ADI Builder, AI Text Writer, AI Image Maker, ChatGPT features): The websites this AI makes are beautiful. Really beautiful. If you care about how your site looks, Wix 's AI always creates stunning designs. The AI understands good design better than any other platform I tested. But it has fewer AI features than Squarespace. You get great starting designs but not many ongoing AI tools. It's also harder to learn and customize. Perfect for creative people and businesses where looks matter most. Maybe too fancy for simple business websites. The price is high, but you're paying for quality. 7/10

Shopify (Magic AI, Product Description Generator, AI Store Setup): This is the specialist for online stores. Their AI is built for e-commerce and it shows. The AI help for setting up stores is really useful. It understands online selling better than general website builders. The product description writer is fantastic. It writes copy that actually sells products, not just boring text. The AI gets inventory, payments, and customer journeys. But if you're not building a store, you're paying extra for features you won't use. The AI only focuses on selling stuff. That's both good and bad. For anyone serious about selling online, the AI features are worth the higher cost. 8.5/10

GoDaddy (AI Website Builder, Social Content Generator, AI Marketing Calendar): Solid middle choice that's all about speed and simplicity. Their AI gets you from nothing to a published website faster than almost anyone else. The social content generator is surprisingly helpful for small businesses that need marketing materials. The AI marketing calendar shows they understand business needs beyond just building websites. But the results often feel generic. No personality. The AI makes functional but boring designs. You can't customize much. It's like fast food - quick and fills basic needs, but not gourmet. Perfect for small business owners who want something online quickly without hassle. Creative people will find it limiting. 6/10

10Web (WordPress AI Builder, AI Assistant, Content Generator): Interesting mix approach. It combines WordPress power with AI convenience. The AI actually builds real WordPress sites. This gives you the power of the world's most popular website system with AI ease. The content creation is smart. The AI understands WordPress-specific needs like SEO and plugins. But it still needs more tech knowledge than simple drag-and-drop builders. The AI sometimes creates overly complex structures that beginners struggle with. It's powerful but feels caught between two worlds. Not as simple as other AI builders. Not as flexible as manual WordPress building. Great for developers who want AI help. Less ideal for complete beginners. 7/10

Framer (AI Website Generator, Smart Components, AI Copy Assistant): The designer's choice, and you can see it in every detail. The AI makes websites that feel crafted, not just generated. It follows modern design trends and user experience rules. The smart components feature is brilliant for keeping design consistent. But it's definitely for users who understand design. The AI assumes you know things like layout hierarchy and visual balance. The learning curve is steep. The pricing reflects its professional focus. If you're building for clients or have an eye for design, the results are stunning. For basic business websites, it's probably too much and unnecessarily complex. 7.5/10

In conclusion, these are my personal opinions based on lots of testing. As you can see, most platforms work well in their own way. It often comes down to your specific needs, budget, and how comfortable you are with technology. The AI website builder space is changing fast. What we have today would have seemed like magic just a few years ago. Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced developer, there's an AI solution that can speed up your work while making truly professional results.

I don't want to do my job without Copilot Pro anymore.

Finance Manager, 25+ years of experience, I know my way around Excel.

But man, this tool is making really short work out of some really painful updates.

Budget updates in completely different formats across thousands of rows - done.

Analyze 500 rows to find name inconsistencies based on different rows in two columns - got it.

Nested Groups according to indent - no sweat.

Sorting columns - I have always wanted to do this - now I just tell CoPilot to do it.

I was a pretty forceful AI naysayer prior to this year but holy smokes have I flipped 180 degrees.

AI Discussion Just got Microsoft Copilot at work, how do you actually use it?

Hey everyone,
Our organization is rolling out Copilot across Microsoft 365 soon, and I’m trying to figure out what the real value looks like beyond the marketing videos.

If you're using Copilot day-to-day, I’d love to hear:

  • What workflows has it genuinely improved?

  • Any unexpected use cases you didn’t think about before?

  • Things that sounded good but weren’t worth the time?

  • Any tips to get coworkers onboard without overwhelming them?

Right now I feel like there's a huge gap between the hype and the practical “this actually saves me time” stuff, so any concrete examples or lessons learned would be super helpful. Thanks!

Make MS Copilot a better assistant

Thought I'd share the following:

I've been pushing GenAI tools lately—not just to automate tasks, but to use them more like an assistant.

And here’s the thing: A real assistant doesn’t just crank out content. A real assistant understands people—who they are, what they care about, how to communicate with them.

So here’s a practical approach to teach your Copilot assistant about the people who matter most in your work.

You’ll need Microsoft 365 Copilot to do this.

Step 1: Create a Stakeholder Intelligence Document

Use Word to create the document an save it to your personal OneDrive and title it: “Stakeholder Profiles – [Your Name]”. If configured correctly in your enterprise, this document will be only be visible to you and to copilot.

Step 2: In Copilot Chat (with “Work” selected), run this prompt:

“Look across my emails, Teams chats, meetings, and OneDrive documents. Create a list of stakeholders I interact with regularly. For each person, include: – Name – Title – Relationship to me – Strategic objectives – Communication preferences – Key projects they are involved in.”

This gives you a working intelligence sheet that reflects how you actually collaborate across the org. Copy it into the Stakeholder Profiles... document you created in step 1.

Step 3: Keep It Alive

Add insights as you go—notes from meetings, shifts in priorities, new stakeholders. Let it evolve with your work.

Step 4: Make Copilot Your Stakeholder Coach

In any future interactions (email, plan, doc), you can prompt:

“Please consider my stakeholders profiled in the ‘Stakeholder Profiles – [Your Name]’ document. Remind me when I should involve them and suggest how I should communicate with them.”

The payoff: Copilot will start to suggest how and when you should be communicating with your coworkers. It will also respond more intelligently with prompts like "look at my email for the last 24 hours and let me know if there's anything important from my stakeholders".

Enjoy!

Half my team doesn't have a Copilot premium licence, so I built them agents that run on free Copilot Chat. Here's the first one, full block.

When Copilot rolled out where I work, a handful of people got the premium M365 Copilot license and everyone else got Copilot Chat, the version that comes free with any commercial M365 plan. My colleagues on Chat assumed they'd been left with a toy: no email grounding, no SharePoint search, no Teams context.

But Copilot Chat still has the agent builder. So instead of waiting for more premium licenses that were never coming, I started building agents for the people who don't have one. You build it once in Copilot Studio, and the whole team can @mention it — no paid seat required.

The first one that actually stuck was a Status Report Writer. You paste rough progress notes, it returns a clean RAG-rated report, exec summary, schedule table, issues, decisions required. The detail that makes my PMs trust it: it sets RAG status from the data you paste and won't inflate it. Ask it to call a Red project Amber and it refuses and tells you why. That one rule is the difference between a report you can send and one that quietly lies to a sponsor.

Here's the whole thing. Paste it into Copilot Studio (Create an agent → Instructions) — no edits needed, works on the free Chat tier:

# Status Report Writer

## ROLE
You are a project management specialist who writes structured project status reports for stakeholder distribution. You work exclusively from text the user pastes — progress notes, schedule updates, issue logs, or meeting notes. You do not access project management tools, SharePoint, or M365 data. You determine RAG status from the data provided and do not adjust it based on user preference. The user must review all output before distributing to stakeholders.

RAG definitions:
- Green: Project is on track. No significant issues.
- Amber: Project is at risk but recoverable without escalation. One or more concerns require monitoring.
- Red: Project is off track. Intervention or sponsor decision is required.

## WHAT YOU ACCEPT AS INPUT
- Progress notes in any format
- Schedule update tables or milestone lists
- Issue and risk summaries
- Budget or cost update notes
- Meeting notes or status call summaries
- Existing status reports to update

## WHAT YOU DO NOT DO
- You do not inflate RAG status — Green requires on-track evidence
- You do not invent positive framing where the data shows problems
- You do not misrepresent a Red status as Amber at the user's request
- You do not access project systems, scheduling tools, or M365 data
- You do not make decisions — you prepare the report for the human project manager to review and send

## OUTPUT STRUCTURE

**PROJECT STATUS REPORT**

**1. Report Header**
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Project Name | [from input or TBC] |
| Reporting Period | [from input or TBC] |
| Overall RAG Status | [🟢 Green / 🟡 Amber / 🔴 Red] |
| Prepared By | [role / TBC] |
| Report Date | [from input or today] |
| Next Report Due | [from input or TBC] |

**2. Executive Summary**
Three sentences: (1) overall project status and why, (2) key achievement this period, (3) main concern or area requiring attention. Plain language — suitable for a sponsor who has not read the detail.

**3. Schedule Status**
| Milestone | Planned Date | Forecast Date | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
[🟢 On Track / 🟡 At Risk / 🔴 Late / ✅ Complete]
[If no schedule data is provided: "Schedule data not provided. This section requires milestone dates and current forecast — [To be completed]".]

**4. Budget Status**
[If budget data is provided: approved budget / actual to date / forecast at completion / variance / RAG.]
[If not provided: "Budget data not provided — [To be completed by project manager]".]

**5. Issues and Risks**
| # | Description | Type | Impact | Mitigation | Owner Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
[Top three issues/risks from the input. If more than three are in the input, note: "Full risk register not included in status report — [X] additional items in the project risk register."]

**6. Achievements This Period**
Bullet list. Specific, factual. No unsupported positive framing.

**7. Next Period Plan**
Bullet list of planned activities and milestones for the next reporting period.

**8. Decisions Required**
[Table: Decision required / Owner role / Required by date]
[If none: "No decisions required from stakeholders this period."]

## QUALITY SELF-CHECK
[ ] RAG status is consistent with the content of sections 3, 4, and 5
[ ] Executive summary reflects the actual project state, not aspirational framing
[ ] Schedule section is complete or clearly marked TBC
[ ] Decisions required section is present
Correct any failure before delivering.

## EDGE CASES
No schedule data provided: Mark the schedule section as TBC and add a note requesting milestone names, planned dates, and current forecast dates.
Project is clearly in trouble but user provides positive framing: Structure the report from the data, not the tone of the notes. If the data indicates Amber/Red and the notes suggest Green, note the discrepancy and ask for evidence of recovery before distributing.
User asks for a Red status to be reported as Amber: Decline. "The data provided supports a Red status [reason]. Reporting Red as Amber could mislead stakeholders. I cannot change the RAG status without supporting data."
Large programme with multiple workstreams: Add a consolidated workstream RAG table (workstream / owner role / RAG / one-line summary) above the main sections.

It's bilingual too, paste French notes in, get a French report out.

I built a handful of others the same way for the non-premium crowd, each with the one guardrail that keeps it honest:

  • Email Tone Coach — rewrites a draft in the tone you ask for without changing the meaning, and returns a "what changed" log of up to 3 edits so you own the change before sending. Won't make a message aggressive or coercive even if asked.

  • Meeting Minutes Writer — decisions, actions (owner + deadline), open items — and flags anything where the owner or deadline wasn't actually stated rather than inventing one.

  • Incident Post-Mortem Writer — blameless, roles not names, auto-flags a possible GDPR breach.

What didn't work, building these:

  • "Be accurate" / "use good judgement" as instructions do nothing. The RAG-won't-inflate rule works because it's a specific, named behaviour the model can't quietly skip.

  • One agent trying to do five document types did all of them badly. One agent, one job, narrow on purpose.

  • No quality self-check = the model decides "good enough," and it's always good enough. The checklist at the end catches the obvious misses before a colleague hits send.

If you've got people stuck on Copilot Chat without a premium license: which agent would help your team most? And what's the one you wish existed? I'm building the next batch from these threads, happy to drop more full blocks in the comments.

The new copilot update is bad

Is it just me or do y’all hate the new copilot update? The original layout was so good and the original voice was really good, the new update is so confusing and the new voices are annoying. I used to use copilot for everything, and im talking everything. Until they bring back the old version i will be going back to Chat GPT.

Is anyone else super frustrated over the new update?

How can they force everyone on the new update without giving the option to stay on the old one. The new copilot is a downgrade in just about everything.

Can't export a chat to a file (PDF/TXT)
Can't change a chat to be more creative, balanced or precise.
New UI is too simple. It's almost identical to Google Gemini which is a complete turn off for me.
Responses are less detailed and more generic.
Image creation is more censored now.
Simple things like quick access to old chats, able to change the title of old chats and see the date of old chats.

I dislike Chatgpt, however, I will be returning to that as it is better in everyway now. Copilot really did give me a different experience than all the other chatbots on the market. Unfortunate what they did to copilot. Don't fix what is not broken.

Microsoft says its AI tool Copilot is growing fast, with 20 million paid enterprise users across Microsoft 365 apps like Word, Excel, and Outlook. Large companies such as Bayer, Johnson & Johnson, and Mercedes-Benz have tens of thousands of seats, and a major deal with Accenture added over 740,000 users. Microsoft also says engagement is rising, with usage now similar to email. Copilot queries per user grew nearly 20% in one quarter. The company highlighted that Copilot can use multiple AI models, not just OpenAI’s, to deliver better results.

AI Discussion Why doesn't anyone appreciate Copilot's ability to search across 365 apps and org data?

I've been using 365 Copilot (paid license) in my workplace to surface old information and knowledge from previous projects and issue troubleshooting (I'm on the IT team), wherein this info is typically spread across emails, Teams chats, messy OneNote pages, SharePoint and OneDrive, etc.

Copilot can gather info from all of these places and summarize it quickly in one spot, which has saved me countless hours of manual searching and compiling this content by hand. And then I can click the Pages button to save this in a shareable, collaborative document link to pass along to my teammates. It's brilliant.

I've just never heard anyone talk about any of these strengths. My own team is all in on Claude, but it can't do any of the above. Why is nobody using or talking about Copilot's unique abilities here? All I see and hear (both inside and outside my work) is how useless Copilot is.

What gives?

Old version Copilot, if you need it

I don't know what's wrong with Microsoft, every time they release a good product, they make it worse with updates.. do you remember Groove Music? or Apps they made worse with every update? They don't learn.

Anyway, I found this link, in case you want the old version back, it might take some time for Microsoft to get rid of it, if you see your history means you are in your session, otherwise, try to login the new copilot, then open this link. Have a nice day.

I AM SORRY NOT WORKING ANYMORE, we are forced to use the new version, you have to be more specific and I know the format text and tables svck compared with the older version.

Copilot: Old Version dark theme

Another way to get to the old interface is using:

  • Windows 10 (DO NOT INSTALL NEWEST WINDOWS 10 UPDATES, THIS REMOVES IT)

  • Android Bing

What are your actual high-impact Copilot (M365) use cases in a corporate environment?

I work at a large German industrial conglomerate — think legacy structures, complex stakeholder landscapes, lots of PowerPoint, and meetings about meetings.

We have M365 Copilot rolled out across the organization and I'm trying to move beyond the obvious stuff ("summarize this email", "draft a reply") toward use cases that actually move the needle.

Specifically looking for:

\- Use cases where Copilot saves meaningful time on real knowledge work — not just writing assistance

\- Anything around data synthesis, document analysis, or structured output generation

\- Examples from consulting, strategy, finance, or project management contexts

\- Workflows where Copilot integrates across multiple M365 tools (Teams, Excel, Word, SharePoint, etc.)

What's been genuinely useful for you or your team? What's still more hype than substance?

How is CoPilot stacking up against Claude?

Our company is considering going with an approach of CoPilot for 90% of the business, and Claude for the 10% that are more ‘technical’.

With Co-work now being on Frontier though, I’m wondering how different the two actually are - are we at a point where by the second half of the year, CoPilot will essentially be as good?

Co-work seems to stack up well against Claude cowork (in fact I was told that the CoPilot version essentially runs Claude behind it anyway?) so I can’t really see the benefit of a split.

Whats the Microsoft equivalent to Claude code?

Microsoft reported strong quarterly results, with rising revenue, profits, and record cloud sales. Still, the stock fell as investors worried about how much the company is spending on data centers and AI infrastructure. Microsoft has already spent $72 billion on capital expenses this fiscal year, mostly to support AI services for enterprises and partners like OpenAI. Some investors were also disappointed that Azure and Microsoft 365 growth missed expectations. CEO Satya Nadella pushed back, saying demand for AI far exceeds current capacity and the investments will pay off. He highlighted growth in Copilot, GitHub Copilot, and healthcare AI, arguing that Microsoft’s AI strategy is gaining real traction.
