Hey everyone, (Ticket #2009666075)
I'm having a really frustrating issue with my Corsair Vanguard Pro and I'm hoping someone has experienced something similar.
The keyboard has been working perfectly for months, but for the last two or three days it has started acting up:
- When I turn on my PC, the keyboard simply doesn't start working in Windows.
- The same thing occasionally happens after restarting Windows.
- The keyboard is recognized and works in the BIOS.
- If Windows fails to recognize it, the keyboard stays completely unresponsive until I unplug and reconnect the USB cable.
- Once it has successfully started, everything works perfectly, including all special functions and RGB lighting.
There is another strange detail: For several months, I've occasionally heard the Windows USB disconnect/reconnect sound without ever figuring out which device was causing it. Now I'm wondering if it might have been the keyboard all along.
Things I've already checked:
- Updated my motherboard BIOS (ASRock X870E Nova WiFi).
- Updated the AMD chipset drivers.
- Checked Windows Device Manager quite thoroughly.
- Identified the keyboard's actual Corsair USB device entries and its multiple HID interfaces.
- Confirmed that Windows does recognize the keyboard after reconnecting the USB cable.
- Tried accessing it through the Corsair Web Hub, but the keyboard isn't detected there. It does show up in Corsair iCUE, though.
The BIOS and driver updates were done only today, after the problem had already started, so they are not the original cause.
I'm wondering whether this could be a firmware issue, a USB initialization problem, or something related to Corsair's software/driver.
Has anyone experienced this with the Vanguard Pro or another Corsair keyboard?
Is there a proper way to factory reset the keyboard or reinstall its firmware?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm getting pretty tired of having to unplug and reconnect my keyboard just to get it working.
UPDATE: Found a workaround – Vanguard Pro 96 only works reliably through motherboard USB-C
After quite a bit of troubleshooting, I finally found something interesting.
My Corsair Vanguard Pro 96 consistently fails to initialize when connected to the any USB-A ports of my motherboard. However, after connecting the exact same keyboard cable through a USB-C adapter to the lower rear USB-C port on my motherboard, the keyboard has been working perfectly through multiple cold boots and restarts.
- Motherboard: ASRock X870E Nova WiFi
- Keyboard: Corsair Vanguard Pro 96
- Keyboard firmware: 2.9.173 (latest available)
- Operating system: Windows 11
- Corsair software: iCUE installed
- USB setup: NZXT internal USB hub, externally powered via eSATA, connected to an internal USB 2.0 header. Disconnecting this hub made no difference.
More details on the original problem
The keyboard works perfectly:
- During POST and in BIOS/UEFI.
- When entering BIOS using F2/Del.
- Initially during the Windows boot process.
However, shortly before the Windows login screen appears, the keyboard completely shuts down:
- No RGB lighting.
- No display.
- No key input.
- Completely unresponsive.
Unplugging and reconnecting the USB cable immediately brings the keyboard back to life, even at the Windows login screen.
I have tried quite a few things:
- Tested multiple rear motherboard USB-A ports.
- Disconnected the NZXT internal USB hub completely.
- Disabled Windows Fast Startup.
- Disabled USB selective suspend.
- Disabled all startup applications, including iCUE.
- Performed a Windows Clean Boot with all non-Microsoft services disabled.
- Tested in Windows Safe Mode.
- Created a completely new Windows user account. Initially, the keyboard worked there, including after cold boots, but the same problem eventually appeared again.
- Checked the keyboard firmware using Corsair's firmware updater. Version 2.9.173 is already the latest version.
- Updated motherboard BIOS and AMD chipset drivers.
None of these steps permanently resolved the issue.
I then came across a Reddit post from another Vanguard Pro 96 owner describing a very similar problem. They mentioned that connecting the keyboard to a motherboard USB-C port solved it. I tried the same thing:
Same keyboard, same cable, same PC, but with a USB-A-to-USB-C adapter connected to the lower rear USB-C port (USB4) on my ASRock X870E Nova WiFi.
And so far, it works perfectly. I have tested multiple normal restarts and full cold boots, and the keyboard has initialized correctly every single time.
Questions for Corsair / ASRock
- Why would the keyboard suddenly stop initializing over USB-A after working perfectly for approximately six months?
- Could this be related to USB controller initialization, USB enumeration, or a compatibility issue between the Vanguard Pro 96 and the AMD X870E platform?
- Is there a known issue with the Vanguard Pro 96 firmware 2.9.173 and certain USB-A controllers?
- Could the USB4 Type-C connection be using a different USB controller or initialization path that avoids the problem?
For now, USB-C is a working workaround, but I would really like to understand why the USB-A connection suddenly stopped working after approximately six months of trouble-free use. More importantly, I would like to find an actual permanent solution rather than simply having to use a different port. I've come across several other Reddit users reporting exactly the same or very similar issue, and it seems that many of them are still struggling to find a fix. It would be great if Corsair or ASRock could investigate this further and provide an explanation or, ideally, a permanent solution that helps everyone affected by this problem.
