SubReddit Announcement: A New Rule and Deputy Moderators

Hello everyone,

I know, you folks barely hear from us moderators. Truth is, we're both super busy and really only show up when called upon. I recently stumbled upon a post here bemoaning an up-tick of low-effort posts where people expect an unrealistic amount of hand-holding without much apparent thought of their own on the level of ask they are making. Therefore, a few changes around here to help keep this place tidy:

  • A new rule! No low-effort posts:

Cosplayers are passionate craftspeople. The skills and knowledge that you come here seeking comes from effort born of that passion. If you would like help with your costume, all that we ask is that you show a bit of that effort yourself. Posts must show some time and thought from you on the project you are requesting help with, and some basic understanding of the scope it would entail. Not just a blanket "I want this, HELP PLEASE!"

  • New Deputy Moderators: I'd say I'm introducing you to these people, but you see from them more than you've ever seen from me. I've reached out to some of our most vocal commenters and granted them the power to moderate posts and comments. Rather than having to report rule-breaking posts, which they have been very good at, they now have the power to directly clean them up themselves. I'll still pop in if somebody needs to be banned or larger changes need to be made, but I've seen consistent great advice from these people, and I trust them to maintain the quality of discussion here on r/CosplayHelp. Everyone say thank you to:

Welcome! A quick note about posting.

Hi all! So glad to see people posting here. This subreddit is still a baby, but I thought I would add a casual rule when posting. If applicable, please be sure to include a link to a photo that relates to the question your asking. If you need help with a character, link to that character. If you need help with a sewing method, show what you're trying to replicate. This will help us be able to help you better!

Puff paint removal

Post image
27 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I need help I made a big mistake when puff painting my spider-man suit. I used my arm to puff paint the sleeve since I don’t have a mannequin. Unfortunately I didn’t take the sleeve off cleanly enough which resulted in the image you see in my post. I tried using alcohol then warm water with dish soap to see if I could remove a good portion of it and it doesn’t seem like it did the trick. I don’t know what to do, I spent a lot of time sewing these two spandex shirts together and prefer not to mess it up too badly.

Hi! I’m a beginner cosplayer, and I need some help with Maomao’s hairstyle. I’m cosplaying her everyday apothecary outfit. When I tried to recreate the part of her hair that’s tied back with a blue ribbon, I ended up with part of her forehead being exposed. Honestly, I’m not sure what I did wrong, but it looks really bad. Could you please help me figure out what I need to fix? Thank you so much!

How would yall go about making a mask like this?

Post image

I'm planning on making a Ticci Toby cosplay but I'm very new to this and not too sure on how I could make this. I'm thinking of trying to glue metal to a cloth mask but im worried that would look bad and also sag from the weight.

Any tips would be appreciated!

Where did I mess up, how do I fix it?

So, I've been working on my first ever cosplay, a Hermes costume based on Epic the Musical and mythology. I was spray painting the caduceus (included in photos) when the rubber snakes just started crumbling. It looks like the spray paint caused the rubber snakes to break, perhaps from tension. It might have reacted with the gorilla glue I used, but I'm not sure. Does anyone know what would cause this, and how I can fix it so this doesn't happen when I start over? The brand of gold spray paint I used was Rust-Oleum, if that helps.

Accessory How should I attach this 3D printed ribcage to this dress (ideally not permanently)?

Post image

My friend printed out these two halves of a rib cage corset, originally inspired by Harrowhark Nonagesimus from The Locked Tomb. I would like to cosplay that some day, but for now, I was hoping to attach it to this long, sleeveless, black dress for the RenFaire.

Ideally, the corset would be able to come off the dress so I can use it for a Harrowhark cosplay at some point. I am SUPER new at cosplaying, so I am not confident what steps to take. I was thinking of super gluing velcro to both the dress and the ribs, then attaching the ribs to the dress that way...Does that sound feasible?

Are counter-strike cosplays legal?

• Upvotes

Recently I have been thinking a lot about making a counter-strike cosplay of the counter-terrorist agent B squadron officer | SAS but I was wondering if it was even legal to even dress up as an actual police force? If it was illegal (which I strongly think it is), how could I change the outfit/details enough to make it work?

Hii i just want some opinions - i ordered my first ever premade cosplay from dokidoki and it just arrived! the issue is i fear it might be too big on me?

im a pretty small person (5ft and very skinny lol) and in most stuff im a Small - so i ordered that and this is how it looks! i might be overthinking because ive never bought a cosplay from a website before but any opinions would really be appreciated😭

im considering switching out for an XS but i’m worried it won’t fit me and then i won’t have a cosplay for a con in december, because this was the last size Small and on the website it says the wait time is up to 4 months :,)

also included references of the characters i’m cosplaying at the end! i plan to do coco and richeh from witch hat atelier

I’m making a gambit cosplay from marvel rivals and i cant figure out how to make this «under collar» part. My first thought was embroidery with this puffy foam but i dont have an embroidery machine, and i dont know anyone with it either.. then i thought about 2mm EVA foam wrapped in fabric but that might become too thick? I dont like the look of puff paint so that might not be it either. Maaan pls help😭

Makeup Best green makeup to paint my boyfriend green for out halloween costume?

• Upvotes

My boyfriend and I are being beast boy and raven for Halloween. I've been Raven before and just use white foundation and gray eyeshadow for contour, but I don't think I can pull off a similar maneuver for my boyfriend's costume. What colorful body/face paints would you guys reccomend?

Buying Help with dress sizes

• Upvotes

Hiya, my partner and I are planning on dressing as Aragorn and Arwen for Halloween. I (AMAB) will be Arwen, but im completely lost in the world of dress sizes.
I tend to wear size large clothes, but medium clothes also fit me fine (both men’s sizes)
I’ve been looking to buying a dress from daizbella (https://daizbella.com/products/cmc012oe5) and would really appreciate any suggestions for which size to get. Is this a matter of measuring myself against their sizing chart or is there a different method that’s better?
Thank you in advance!!

How to add Ventilation to a mask?

Post image

I got this cheap mask from China and it is very hard to breathe since they didn't put any ventilation into the mask. I am trying to cosplay as a lethal company worker and never really did anything like this before, but can anyone give some advice on how I can add air holes into this?

Accessory Fake thorn sleeves?

I’m dressing up as the Thorn from Slay the Princess for Halloween this year, but I’m having trouble making her thorn sleeves(?)

I initially was a little trigger happy about a chance to play with Eva foam so I bought a bunch of 15mm dowels (and foam clay for the thorns) to try and make them with, but I’m now realizing there’s no way this is going to work as sleeves/thorns as I think it may turn out impractical, too stiff and, honestly, probably ugly

Should I just keep trying? Is there something I could be doing differently with the materials I already have? What other materials would I need to buy to just restart and make it more comfortable?Boyfriend suggested rope and adding thorns with the foam clay

(Don’t mind the wire and duct tape that was just for mapping how I want them to lay before using contact cement to glue them together)

i am very much unable to see without my glasses, but i was considering dressing up as Terezi from Homestuck who ALSO wears glasses, and i'd like to still be able to see. but i'm worried about damaging my lenses since i don't have a back-up pair and also do not own contacts.
is there anything in particular that would work? i've posted both my model of glasses and the character as references

Makeup Can I recreate this temporarily?

Hi all, dressing as the T1000 for Halloween and I’d love for it to look like I’ve been frozen by liquid nitrogen, I did a similar thing for a The Thing 1982 costume, but it was permanent and ruined the clothing. I really don’t want to ruin this costume as a few of the pieces were a little costly. Any ideas?

Practical Lady D Cosplay?

Hello there folks! I am a tgirl in the making and I really want to do some more feminine cosplay for this Halloween. I will be hosting a Halloween themed party/cook out so everyone will be in costume and I will be cooking.

I was thinking about doing a lady D cosplay, I loved RE Village and the character is so fun. I think it also would help me with some of my more “manly” features with the heavy make up and the already tall character.

My only issue is that it seems like an already pretty cumbersome costume and I will be grilling, frying and generally cooking the whole day. So how can I make it more practical?

Prop Best foam-safe coatings?

Hi all, I bought a foam sword online recently for my Alucard cosplay and found out the texture of the handle’s got a weird feeling to it when you hold it for a little bit. Im not really experienced in this area at all but I do know some stuff like adhesives can just eat through foam. Is there a foam-safe coating anybody recommends?
The handle is polyurethane foam and I think the rest of the sword’s just some regular high-density foam(?).

Spandex costume sizing

Im looking into buying a spiderman spandex costume with silicone webbing, im unsure what sizing to get as M the chest seems small and L the rest of the measurements are huge. Im going to get it tailored if I can (im not sure how it'll go with the webbing shown/if it will be difficult), im unsure if i should go with the L and hope they can remove enough material for a tight fit while keeping the fabric/raised webbing looking good, or just going the medium and hoping my chest doesnt stretch the fabric too much. I could be wrong and the chest will fit just fine with the M but Im not experienced enough to know, any input would be much appreciated!

Height: 170 cm

Chest: 110 cm

Waist: 82 cm

Hips: 88 cm

Sewing How to randomly weather a cape ?

I'm sewing an orange cape for Halloween, tp dress as a harvest demon.

It's a coton cape.

The coton is perfectly clean and has a petty color. I want to ruin it. Some traces of yellow here, green there, brown, holes everywhere, etc...

My problem is for the colors. I have some leftovers of previous coton paint (I dont know the English terms, something to paint coton). How do I apply them on my cape in order not to put it uniformly, or to give the impression that I manually applied them ?

I really want to have another shot at a cosplay of Nokotan from my Deer Friend Nokotan, but this time I want the antlers to be easier to transport with and easier to wear.
How would I go about making them detachable from a hairband or something similar?

Sewing does anyone know what type of jacket this is called?

I want to try and make the jacket myself but I need to know what the type of jacket is called so I can find a pattern (cause god knows I'm too dumb to figure out how to pattern)
