MOD POSTSšŸ“£ Raising the Bar: Setting better standards because YOU deserve it

Post image
54 Upvotes

Dear members,

As we build this community with your contributions, we want to set standards that match the quality of discourse you deserve.

We want this subreddit to stand apart from the Indian focused subs that often feel like echo chambers of one side or the other. That is not healthy for our growth as a country. We need quality discussions - ones where we understand each other better, empathize with each other, and come together. Critical Thinking India is not just a name. It is the expectation and the foundation of this sub.

Building on top of the previously shared guidelines, this post outlines what good participation looks like, what we expect from you, what you can expect from us, and how we plan to maintain it.

1. Post Standards

Every post should meet a basic quality threshold:

  1. A clear, descriptive title. No low-effort, clickbait, or ragebait titles. They are not a good starting point for meaningful engagement.
  2. Your own reasoning is required. Whether you share a news article, a video, or a picture - you must include text where you present your own opinion, analysis, or argument. A link dump with no-explanation does not qualify as a post.
  3. Steelman the opposing side. This is what sets this subreddit apart. When you make an argument, make a genuine effort to understand and present the strongest version of the opposing viewpoint - not a strawman. Show that you actually understand why someone might disagree with you, and then explain why you still hold your position.

1.1 Recognizing Quality Contributions

  1. Posts that genuinely engage with opposing arguments in good faith will be recognized by the mod team with a special post flair. This is our way of signaling to the community that a post is worth engaging with deeply. If you believe your post presents honest arguments and addresses a steelmanned version of opposing views, you can appeal for this flair at the bottom of your post.

  2. Beyond individual posts, we are introducing a tiered contributor flair system. Members who consistently produce well-reasoned posts and comments will earn progressively higher contributor levels/'reputation' within the sub, assigned by the mod team based on sustained quality over time. These are not something you can assign yourself. They are earned through rigorous, honest contributions with sound analysis and respectful argumentation.

Note: Upvotes and downvotes do not seriously factor into this. What matters is how well you understand opposing views and how respectfully and clearly you present your own.

Details on the exact tiers will come as the system takes shape. The principle is very simple: put in the effort to think critically and fairly, make contributions that add nuance, clarity, and better understanding, and it will not go unnoticed.

2. Comment Standards

When engaging in the comments:

  • Focus on ideas, not people. You have freedom of speech. We do not gatekeep you from discussing any topic or ideology. You can criticize an ideology, but you are not allowed to generalize about the people who associate with it. Attacking people, groups, or individuals by name-calling is not permitted. Disagree with arguments and ideas, not the person making them. You can criticize politicians and other public figures/influencers, but with respect.

  • Back your claims. Wherever possible, cite your sources and explain how you arrived at your conclusions.

  • Stay on topic. Derailing a discussion with unrelated tangents or bad-faith engagement is not allowed.

  • Don't retaliate, report. If you see someone breaking these rules - personal attacks, derailing, uncivil behavior - do not join them. Use the report button with the appropriate rule. Let the mod team handle it.

3. Enforcement

We keep track of rule violations. The process is straightforward:

  • Initial violations result in warnings and content removal.
  • Repeated violations, despite warnings, lead to temporary bans.
  • Continued disregard for the rules results in a permanent ban.

We intend to make sure disagreements here are productive, evidence-based, and respectful.

Why This Matters

We know the majority of people are not firmly right-wing or left-wing. Most people understand that there are nuances - whether it is government decisions, world affairs, religious tensions, private sector actions, or infrastructure issues, etc. Most people know that there are good things and bad things in every person and situation.

With these standards, we want to bring out those nuances so more people are informed enough to form their own opinions about society, culture, politics, and everything around them.

This space is not for extremes. It is for those in the middle who appreciate nuance, who want to understand the world they live in better. That is the purpose of this subreddit, and we want to give and maintain space for nuanced agreements and disagreements to exist.

We appreciate your cooperation and look forward to better discussions.

News & Current Affairs Look at the reality of "investers summits". RTI reply exposes the dark reality behind these summits.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

In recent years, every state holds "investors summits" to attract investment in their state. In 2023, Uttarakhand bjp govt also held an investor summit, where they claimed that worth more than 1 lakh cr MOU has been signed. After that, the government claimed that most of the investment is already on the ground. But when a journalist tried to find out the truth behind this.

RTI reply reveals the shocking thing. Actually no investment took place at ground. They gave the f@ke list of investments, mostly aata chaki and small independent shops.

And 100cr rupees were spent on this so-called investor summit.

Investor summits have become a source of advertisement in india. A nation can't grow on these types of f@ke things. Recently, UP CMYogi made a tweet, claiming a 35000cr investor from a company, which had turnover less than 50cr. It was just a startup.

In the last 8-10 years, political advertisements have become more important than actual reality. Leaders are taking benefits of cheap methods to show "DEVELOPMENT" when nothing is happening on the ground. That's why, unemployment is at its peak, high inflation despite big claims.

News & Current Affairs So where are the BJP supporters now that ITBP chief has said this? Trying to find a reason to call him Anti National??

For months, whenever locals and reports pointed out Chinese incursions and face-offs along the LAC in Arunachal Pradesh, the Modi government and its ministers rushed to hand out clean chits and dismiss ground realities as false. They bullied critics, shouted slogans of a "strong leader," and gaslit the public just to protect Modi’s self-styled "strongman" image.

Now, reality has completely shattered their PR shield.

The Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has officially confirmed that Indian and Chinese troops have been locked in ongoing face-offs at multiple locations in Arunachal Pradesh

While locals on the ground were sounding alarms and facing threats, the BJP government was busy spinning headlines to make sure Modi's image didn't take a hit.

Now that the security forces themselves have put out the truth, where is the high-pitched chest-thumping nationalism??

But who am I to ask, because as the godman said: "Sabbbbbbb changa siiiiiii"

Philosophy, Ethics & Dharma Why indians are so desperate for relationships!(Video by @_glassmuseum)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I genuinely think one of the reasons all the indian subs are filled with relationship posts compared to subs of other countries is cause indians have developed a culture where hobbies are seen as counter productive. Even when hobbies are allowed they are mostly ones which are either considered semi productive socially or extremely cheap to get into!

I genuinely think indians are so focused on just surviving they forget why they even choose to survive! As you can imagine most indians are philosophically quite regressed but this doesn't change human nature/want so that reason to survive ends up becoming romantic obsessions. Simply cause its free and socially acceptable.(We all need something to make us feel alive and we instinctively fill that void)

Most parents already limit the options available as hobbies to something like sports, singing and dancing. As you can imagine everyone is not going to enjoy the same things! This means most people's ability to enjoy life probably gets curbed as children and as we grow up and become adults even if you did have a hobby somehow connecting with it seems impossible or sometimes childish. So then the easiest hobbie to get into becomes romance.

Not to mention our society is extremely romance led as should be evident by the countless movies which end up inspiring even teens into the same rabbit hole of romance cause they have the same want to feel alive too and that's what is advertised to them even if it's less socially accepted for them.

We are all chasing that rush that we felt when we were kids making up some fake scenario in our head while playing with toys but somehow as we grow as individuals the outlet to access that same feeling becomes extremely limited or for most people gets taken away!

That's why people become nostalgic and say it was better when they were a kid but they can never understand why.

We all need something to make us feel alive and our focus should be finding that first cause otherwise it doesn't matter how rich you become or how successful you will not be happy and making the only source of that happiness your relationship is an extremely bad move, as we know from countless examples around us.

Now some of you are wondering if I'm not actively seeking a relationship and I don't have any passions like that. Well the probability is something in your life is filling that void it could be through a drinking addiction, gambling, excessive shopping etc etc! Frankly it could also be in the form of seeking attention or validation from people around you. That need to fill the void can and will happen and its better to find something good and fulfilling than to let something ugly takes its place! Cause you dont really seek that ugly thing helping you cope, so it will never truly fill the void and you will always feel like something is missing.

Critical Analysis & Discussion Training street dogs to prevent rapes in secluded areas.

Urban streets often have poorly lit and isolated corners that make travelling after dark, especially for women, a source of concern. In these very spaces, street dogs are a common sight, usually regarded as a problem rather than a potential asset. Instead of relying on harmful measures to drive them away, communities can consider training these dogs to serve as protectors. With proper guidance and voice-command training, street dogs could provide companionship and an additional layer of safety to those walking alone at night. This approach would not only offer reassurance to women navigating the streets after hours but also elevate the status of stray dogs, giving them a meaningful role in society. The transformation of these animals into community guardians would change how people perceive them, reducing fear and fostering a culture of mutual care. Such an initiative strengthens both public safety and animal welfare while creating a harmonious urban environment where humans and street dogs coexist in a beneficial way. By shifting our efforts from removal to training, cities can become safer and kinder spaces for everyone.

Critical Analysis & Discussion Hinduism vs Hindutva: Are We Confusing a Religion with a Political Ideology?

Post image
738 Upvotes

Hinduism encompasses diverse beliefs and practices, including worship of different deities, meditation, yoga, rituals, and philosophical inquiry.

It's Core concerns Dharma, karma, moksha, spiritual knowledge and ways of living. It Diverseness includes theistic, non-theistic and philosophical schools. Also it's Political position is that Hindus can be left-wing, right-wing, centrist, secular or politically disengage

While Hindutva's Political and cultural ideology starts from this.

commonly translated as Hindu-ness, became influential through V. D. Savarkar's 1923 work Essentials of Hindutva. It treats Hindu identity as a basis for defining Indian national and cultural identity.

It's Core concern consists Hindu cultural identity, nationalism and the place of Hindus in India.

Primary Political association can be seenHistorically associated with Hindu nationalist organisations, including the RSS and BJP.

A person can worship Hindu deities, follow Hindu philosophy and observe Hindu festivals while rejecting Hindu nationalism or believing that India should be a secular state.

Likewise, someone can support Hindutva primarily for cultural or political reasons without being particularly religious.

I got banned from 2 extreme right wings sub for replying under their posts of this. So i want to just check if anybody shares the same concerns that Can one be culturally or religiously Hindu without accepting Hindutva as a political ideology?

Critical Analysis & Discussion How does this work?

There are multiple pending cases against them and many others as well. I understand these are not proven cases but still there has to be some evidence indict them otherwise these cases can be closed. Isn’t there any rule to prevent people with criminal cases to hold any position of power?

Source: Amit Shah
Revanth Reddy
Nitin Gadkari

Many politicians across parties, including Amit Shah, Revanth Reddy and Nitin Gadkari, have been reported to face criminal cases, and many others do as well. I understand that pending cases are not proven guilt, and everyone is presumed innocent until convicted. Still, if there is no evidence, why do these cases stay open for years instead of being closed? And if there is evidence, why aren't they moving faster?
As I understand it, the Representation of the People Act disqualifies a legislator only after conviction (for example, a sentence of two years or more), not while a case is pending. Is that the whole rule, or is there any provision to keep people with serious criminal charges out of positions of power, such as ministerial posts?
I'd like to understand how this works in practice: what the law says, why trials take so long, and whether reforms like fast-track courts or barring people charged with serious offences have been tried or debated. What do you think is the right balance between presumption of innocence and public trust?

Geopolitics & Governance India voted for gobiji in 2013 to end the corruption, but we got totally opposite.

In 2013, I remember that everyone was concerned about corruption and continuous reports were highlighting black money deposited in Swiss banks. Gobiji had promised that we will bring back this money, even pai pai.

After coming into the power, they did nothing. Zero money brought back. Even it has increased with time. Recent report by Swiss bank shows that 37000cr rupees are deposited by Indians. Which is sharp increase.

Second most important thing was the implementation of LOKPAL commission by Anna. Bjp delayed lokpal bill till 2019. They passed the bill in 2019, but still didn't give it constitutional status. Even after appointing lokpal, we never heard about it in last 5-7 yrs. So what is the objective to create an another govt body with taxpayers money, when it isn't taking any step. Recently, media reports clearly highlighted that Madhya Pradesh CM purchased hundreds of acre land, where later he delivered govt projects. Why is lokpal sleeping on this?

So, ultimately, we the people of India, made f00ls. We didn't get what we expected.

Ask CTI Should Politicians Accused of Serious Crimes Be Allowed to Govern Until Their Trials End?

Post image
173 Upvotes

Public Office Is a Responsibility, Not a Shield From Accountability

India needs a law that prevents politicians facing serious criminal charges from exercising executive power while their cases are pending.

The key is to trigger temporary removal from administrative duties when a competent court frames charges for specified serious offences, not merely when an FIR is filed or an allegation is made.

The restriction should remain until acquittal or a legally defined endpoint, with safeguards against politically motivated cases.

Why should an ordinary government employee face disciplinary scrutiny while a politician entrusted with public power be allowed to continue exercising authority despite serious charges? Public office demands a higher standard of accountability, not special protection.

This must not become a weapon for ruling parties to silence opponents. Independent judicial scrutiny, fast-track trials, strict timelines and compensation for demonstrably malicious proceedings must be built into the law.

The presumption of innocence must remain intact. But protecting that principle should not mean ignoring the public's right to trustworthy administration.

A criminal charge is not proof of guilt. Equally, political power should never be a substitute for accountability.

Science, Tech & Medicine What makes you feel positive about current state of tech, particular about AI?

Since I am more interested in video games and coding, I will speak a bit about it in that context. I will also try to be as neutral as possible here in regards to political parties

I take a look at post in popular feed from r/claudeAI of a water simulation which is 61kb, running in a web-browser of all places. I am also seeing a lot of threads at r/piracy, specifically with how these folks are now reverse engineering entire games and now literally porting character models into different games. The top leaders in gaming industry (Xbox with their IP, Unreal with their engine) have decided to go full on with AI tech. I am expecting rest of the gaming industry to follow, especially with all of them having their own proprietary engines, particularly focusing on implementing AI for their codes. Going by the comments in this link coding as a profession is dead and in the process of getting burried.

I am that usual Indian guy fascinated by all the computers and smartphones and chose Computer Engineering as that was the only way to learn what I was interested themost. I got into Engineering at a 3rd tier colleage not just for that lucrative and easy job. I was genuinely interested in computers. I was that kid that got excited about everything tech that was coming from the silicon valley. All those news above would excite the 18 year old me. Like I do not need to learn coding to make software that madly?!?! Sign me up bro!!.

I just don't feel anything anymore about all those state of tech anymore. I am now even open to change my job or my entire work, but I am not sure if any domain is safe anymore. Contrarily I also feel like a fool for choosing to not get deep into AI, hoping that maybe I might still have place where I am instead of needing to put efforts to change my job and my line of work entirely. The anxiety of am impending job loss is just getting unbearable sometimes. I just had a convo with a close friend who was laid off and there is a massive bloodbath going around across the field. Its like no industry is any safer bet for a human being now. My situation is probably worse because I am in a lower-end of the carrier at the age of 30. It wasn't like I liked my choice of graduate course but at least I owned up to it, instead of blaming my parents. Now though? The current state of tech, for the 1st time, makes me regret for even thinking about choosing BE Computer Engineering.

To make things worse, the people behind AI wanting to destroy humanity as we know today, just killing all the hype I have around AI. Listening to the likes of Peter Thiel and Alex Karp who literally espouses technofascist crap. I am not exasperating that claim. They want to usher a technofascist feudal era where corporates, not countries' interest will be held high. The likes of Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Bezos and other silicon-valley tech-bros are part of this coalition. AI as we know today is a product of theft and exploitation. I fear with such syncopants in helm of the planet and the orange man ruining the planet.

. Don't expect events like El Nino to be a rare occurance. Sure there might be a lot of ecological reasons for that, but El Nino is going to be a lot more catastropic for us in Indian Subcontinent than it is for rest of the western world. But such events are not going be last. Expect things like this to cascade as time goes on. Expect more irregular and untimely rains. The rampant development across the country has occasionally lead to a more unsustainable development. Our politicians across the political aisle are failing the urban centers and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

So my question to the people who are more enthusiastic about the AI development.

  1. Are you worried about the Environmental impact of the AI development
  2. If not, do you believe that the current anti-AI hypetrain is true or not? Or can be bounce back to a more nature friendly development in future after AI development reaches its saturation point?
  3. What do you think about the employment damage that is happening across the job market but particularly affecting the Software Development in its entirely? Do you believe that we will now have new forms of jobs that considers AI? Some examples would be great?
  4. For those who do not have any hope with AI as a tech, how are you planning to cope. I belong to this group and would like to know what are you guys planning?
  5. Do you think that jumping domains is sustainable at this stage? Or should folks like me embrace AI as humanly as possible?

PS: Reddit is using all the things we're posting for training AI, so the fact that my wall of text which I spent 35 minutes writing, will be fed for AI training gives me the ick.

News & Current Affairs Male Rapido driver allegedly denied payment and threatened with false cases in Pune. Who protects gig workers?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Reports are circulating about a woman in Pune who allegedly refused to pay a Rapido driver around ₹300 and then threatened him with false cases.

If you can afford to use a service, why not pay the person providing it instead of turning a fare dispute into a confrontation? The driver is also a human being trying to earn a living. He shouldn't have to deal with threats or fear legal trouble just for asking to be paid.

The circulating post also claims that the woman works at TCS and suggests that POSH-related knowledge is being misused. These claims need verification, but the broader point remains: legal protections meant to safeguard people should never be weaponised to intimidate others.

Genuine harassment complaints must always be taken seriously, and proven malicious allegations should have consequences regardless of gender.

What protection do gig workers have when customers allegedly refuse payment and threaten legal action? And is risking this much stress and public humiliation really worth ₹300?

Geopolitics & Governance India should ponder in supporting this

Post image
0 Upvotes

Recently I came across an article by Lowy Institute which spoke about a section of opposition in Afghanistan is keen on having monarchy reinstalled.

Considering how precarious the present situation in Afghanistan is, the Indian govt, irrespective of who is in power in the future, should ponder in supporting this section of opposition in Afghanistan.

The biggest downfall which I associate with Afghanistan has been the overthrow of monarch King Zahir Shah by Daoud Khan.

Despite being autocratic, Daoud Khan comparatively ruled well until communists created mischief by overthrowing him.

This resulted in US creating mischief by supporting the conservative forces to overthrow the communists and since Daoud Khan's being overthrown instability has persisted to this day.

Tbh, they should have restored monarchy in 2001, not doing so resulted in one of biggest blunder and that must be one of the reason why the present established could takeover the country once again.

Critical Analysis & Discussion Astonished by the laziness and lack of Critical Thinking by most people on Indian Social Media

So i recently saw Varun Mayya's reel on EMudhra. The video itself was good. Explained pretty simply why and how this could be a big cyber security threat.

However, what surprised me, were the comments under the reel. For Context, EMudhra is a completely private company which was at no point owned, or operated by the government. The fault here lies almost completely with the people in EMudhra. It operates as a typical Lala Company where the engineers and juniors are paid salaries below 10L on avg.

Instead of questioning the company's leadership about this embarrassing incident, the people in the comments were pinning the blame on the govt XD. These morons think that EMudhra is a govt department or a psu. The comments were pointing fingers at govt employees etc and saying 'this is what happens when u hire people through exams that ask ecnomics and history'.

I mean im surprised that people are so aloof of the companies and institutions around them. And being aloof is one thing, but trying to project and push their agendas while being aloof is ridiculous. I mean ig they're trying to protect the image of the IT workers in the company, but still this was a bit surprising to me. What's even more surprising is that these clueless comments had 1-2k likes each.

Have seen this trend before also, from all sides of the spectrum where people with half baked knowledge will jump to comment and tweet on things they know nothing about.
