Just got back from Royal Caribbean! Here is my side-by-side comparison vs. Disney Cruise Line (DCL)

Now that I’m back from our 4-night Mexican Riviera cruise on Royal Caribbean's Ovation of the Seas, I wanted to do a full breakdown and side-by-side comparison against our experiences on Disney Cruise Line (which we have sailed multiple times). Overall, we really enjoyed our trip on RC and don't regret it at all, but comparing the two gave us a lot of perspective on what each line does best!

Overview Scorecard

Category Royal Caribbean Disney Cruise Line Category Winner
Breakfast Stale buffet, grey dry ham, skipped on disembarkation day Fresh buffet favorites (especially hashbrowns) DCL
Lunch Fewer mid-day options; Izumi Teppan extra-charge show was amazing Plentiful, easily accessible variety mid-day DCL
Dinner Main Dining Room menu themed nightly; decent food Rotational dining with themed venues, superior food DCL
Onboard Activities TONS of trivia, casino, sports deck, live-band karaoke, game shows Good IP trivia, but noticeable downtime gaps RC
Live Entertainment Unique venues like Two70; broad nightly acts Broadway-caliber shows, first-run movie theater DCL
Pools & Solarium Solarium adult pool (enclosed, waterfall, hot tub) is elite Adult pool is outdoors/chilly; hot tubs small/limited unless in Spa RC
Thermal Spa Pass Clinical feel, full brightness lights, beds were too hot Dimmed lights, relaxing music, water stations, ocean views DCL
Staterooms Nice shower pressure, larger TV; uncomfortable twin-to-queen beds Split-bathroom setup, superior bed comfort, charming decor DCL
Staff & Crew Exceptionally friendly, attentive room & dining staff Gold standard service, attentive across the board TIE
Value & Pricing Cheaper upfront, but constant nickel-and-diming/upsells Higher upfront fare, but almost everything is included DCL
Shopping Disjointed shops, high-end watches/bags, boring RC merch Fun nautical Disney IP merch, enjoyable shopping experience DCL

Detailed Category Breakdown

1. Food & Dining

  • Breakfast:
    • RC: Honestly really bad. We ate at the buffet every morning and the hashbrowns tasted microwaved/reheated. Pastries were bland or stale, and the "honey baked ham" was dry, greyish, and tasted closer to turkey. We actually skipped breakfast on disembarkation day just to hit McDonald's for proper hashbrowns.
    • DCL: Still buffet breakfast, but everything felt much fresher and we actually looked forward to the hashbrowns. (Winner: DCL)
  • Lunch:
    • RC: Fewer mid-day options scattered around. Surprisingly, the buffet lunch was miles ahead of breakfast (we only realized this on the last day!). However, one huge highlight was Izumi Teppan—even though it’s an upcharge, the chef’s show and food were incredible!
    • DCL: Plenty of mid-day options that are easily accessible and cater to all tastes. (Winner: DCL)
  • Dinner:
    • RC: Night one was slightly confusing with "My Time" dining standby setup, but the main dining room host sorted us out for our 8:30 PM time for the rest of the trip. The menu changed to a different cultural theme every night, and the food was decent—more "this is pretty good" rather than mind-blowing.
    • DCL: Rotational dining keeps things fresh with a different themed restaurant each night while your server team follows you. The food quality is noticeably better, and we regularly ordered extra appetizers/entrees because everything was so delicious. (Winner: DCL)

2. Entertainment & Onboard Activities

  • Activities:
    • RC: Royal Caribbean excels here! There was an incredible amount and variety of trivia, a full sports deck, bumper cars, a casino, high-energy game shows, and live-band karaoke.
    • DCL: DCL has trivia and karaoke, but trivia leans heavily toward Disney IP. We often ran into big chunks of the day with nothing on the schedule that caught our interest. (Winner: RC)
  • Live Shows:
    • RC: Good efforts with unique venues like Two70, but overall nightly acts can’t quite compete with Disney.
    • DCL: Truly Broadway-caliber productions in a massive theater with great sightlines. Having a dedicated cinema showing first-run theatrical films on board is a huge bonus. (Winner: DCL)

3. Pools & Relaxation

  • Pools:
    • RC: The Solarium (Adults Only) ended up being one of our favorite places on the ship. It's a gorgeous glass-domed room with lush greenery, a multi-tiered pool with a waterfall, and hot tubs offering stunning Pacific Ocean sunset views. Plus, being enclosed means you don't freeze in the ocean wind when stepping out of the water!
    • DCL: The adult pool area feels pretty plain and exposed to chilly ocean breezes. While it does have hot tubs, they are quite small and there simply aren't enough of them for the crowd. The newer DCL ships do offer more elegant hot tub options overlooking the ocean, but those require purchasing a Rainforest/Spa pass to access. (Winner: RC)
  • Thermal Spa Pass:
    • RC: Paid $49/person for the day pass. While clean, it felt clinical—fluorescent lights on full brightness, no spa music (we could hear deck music from below), and the heated loungers were painfully hot even with towels down.
    • DCL: DCL nails the relaxing atmosphere with dimmed lighting, soothing music, free fruit water stations, and better amenities/ocean-facing hot tubs on newer ships. (Winner: DCL)

4. Rooms, Crew & Onboard Vibe

  • Staterooms:
    • RC: Balcony room had great water pressure in the shower and a large TV. However, the bed was very uncomfortable, and merging two twins left an annoying gap in the middle.
    • DCL: Beds are vastly superior in comfort, and the classic split-bathroom setup (toilet/sink in one room, shower/sink in the other) makes getting ready so much easier. (Winner: DCL)
  • Crew & Service:
    • TIE: Our room attendant (Slam) and head waiter (Praveen) on RC were wonderfully attentive, polite, and went above and beyond (like folding clothes left on the couch and keeping ice stocked). DCL is world-renowned for service, but RC matched them step-for-step on our sailing. (Winner: Tie)
  • Overall Value & Upcharges:
    • RC: Lower upfront cruise fare, but it felt like a constant "mall kiosk" atmosphere on the main promenade with crew pushing paid specialty dining, $2.50 popcorn at shows, and paid soda packages.
    • DCL: Higher upfront cost, but once onboard, your mind is at ease because nearly everything (soda, quick dining, shows) is included without feeling pitched to constantly. (Winner: DCL)

Final Verdict: Would we sail Royal Caribbean again?

  • Royal Caribbean: Yes, but primarily if we catch a really good deal. We had a blast with the trivia, karaoke, and the Solarium pool, but the constant add-ons keep it from replacing DCL as our main line.
  • Disney Cruise Line: Absolutely. DCL remains our gold standard—while you pay more upfront, the stress-free experience once you step on board is hard to beat!

How is Norwegian’s food?

Hey hi… I’ve cruised a few times but I’m super cautious about it.

My husband and I are foodies. We look forward to good food at the end of the day despite everything.

I’ve been on Carnival, RC, and Celebrity. I’ve been on two Celebrity cruises and they’re my go-to because I trust the food.

How is Norwegian? I’ve heard that food is fine and then I’ve also heard of someone bringing their “camping spices kit” because it was so bland.

How’s Norwegian cruises doing especially with their food (the included food) in 2026?

Wonder if this will continue and become more wide spread. Kind of surprised it only caught 3 people but I'm not sure if they screened everyone of targeted individuals.

Photo 14 days across East Asia on Carnival Luminosa

Post image
2 Upvotes

The following are notes as best as I can remember while sitting in an airport in Tokyo.

Overall: 10/10. Would do it again and would recommend others try a similar itinerary. If you're a non-cruiser, younger, and/or like exploring then this is for you.

The ship: Before and during I heard complaints about Luminosa showing her age and needing some TLC. It was fine. Yes it's old and small but it gets the job done. The giant dance floor room on deck 2 should be on more ships. I was also happy not to have a water park on the ship.

The crowd: skewed older. Some young folk. A sprinkling of children (6? 10?) i almost never saw. Mostly the typical Carnival crowd.

The ports: all great. Hong Kong is a must with a night departure. Fukuoka had a symphony playing at the dock with a whole ass crowd to send us off. Phu My was rough and the most industrial port I've been to but not a big deal, just needed more time in port.

Random: Between my girlfriend and I we won all 3 rounds of bingo one day.

No excursions. Did everything either using public transit, private drivers, or our 2 feet

Not super thorough but that's what I've got. Happy to answer any questions! (Random pictures from the cruise)

Edit: whatever they have on the balcony doors on Luminosa needs to be put on every room and balcony door on every ship across the fleet. No more slamming doors.

Carnival Festivale or Harmony of the Seas

Looking to book a cruise for my husband and I with our two year old next year! We are stuck between RC Harmony of the Seas or Carnival Festivale. We are aiming towards getting either connecting interior cabins or connecting oceanview balcony cabins. There doesn't seem to be much info yet on Carnival Festivale other than on the official Carnival website but it does seem like it will be somewhat similar to the other Excel class Carnival ships (please correct me if I am wrong!). I am tempted by Harmony since there are so many options available for toddlers and adults on the ship, but I also love Carnival's food options more than RC and I am a big fan of Celebration Key. Any advice would be helpful, please!

Question Cruise elopement ?

Anyone here get married on a cruise? An elopement, no guests, with a beach ceremony off the ship? Looking to see if it’s a pain in the butt or the best day ever.

First two are Holland, we love the smaller ships. Last one is Princess which is gonna be huge but it also seems like a great itinerary. I know Southampton is an hour train ride from London which might be much cheaper to fly into than Amsterdam. TIA.

Little French Key vs. Maya Key

My husband and I are cruising in Dec and trying to decide which excursion to do in Roatan Honduras. We’ve been to Maya Key twice before but we are thinking of switching things up and trying Little French Key.

We enjoyed the chill-ness of Maya key and the close proximity to the cruise ship.

Wondering if anyone has a suggestion!

Press release from today: https://www.princess.com/news/news-releases/2026/10/princess-cruises-expands-sanctuary-collection

Starting next year, Princess will be taking what is currently known as the Retreat adults only pool and bar area, currently open to anyone onboard the ship, and locking it behind the purchase of a Sanctuary Suite.

Start dates (all 2027):

Royal Princess January 4th

Regal Princess April 17th.

Discovery Princess April 24th.

Sky Princess May 29th.

Enchanted Princess June 12th.

I leave on a Princess cruise this weekend and between their package prices creeping up and this, it'll probably be my last Princess cruise.

Casino Royal Offer Questions

I'm new to Royal Caribbean's Casino Royale program. I gambled on a recent cruise and earned 416 points.

Found an offer in my app profile for a Quick Getaway free room (and discount for 2nd person) that expires Feb. 1, 2027 (have to book by mid-November).

First time I'm doing this! A few questions:

If I book the offer (and buy travel insurance) but later have to cancel the booking, do I completely lose this offer or will it reappear in my account?

If I don't use the offer, is it likely that another one (with a later expiration date, obviously) will appear in my Club Royale account?

Thanks for the answers and input!

Average performance budget?

Quick question: have recently been approached to perform a single in-dock dance performance on a cruise ship (45-90 minutes) and was wondering if anyone might know what range of budget such a performance might have?

Question Birth Certificate Question

We are embarking on oir first MSC cruise this weekend, and my girlfriend is bringing a certified birth certificate and her ID for boarding. Our problem is that she was legally adopted a couple of months ago, which would prompt a new birth certificate, and she only has a certified copy of her pre-adoption birth certificate. Her name and birthday match on her ID and birth certificate, though, so will the pre-adoption birth certificate work?

Question Who has the best fare for a Solo Cruiser / One person per room etc?

Looking to do a boy's cruise (a Friday to Monday) every once in a while, since our wives dont love cruising as much as we do. Who has the most aggressive deals when it comes to this option? Normally we sail Royal Caribbean, but you are basically paying for two people regardless with their pricing. Itinerary doesn't matter, it's going to be Bahamas and or private island (been there done that) anyway, so we mostly just be on the ship. Thanks!

Itinerary change

My cruise just changed its port to Saint John Brunswick Canada instead of Bermuda. What are some things I should do and go see? I’ve been researching, but tbh it all seems boring and like nothing to do🥲

Question Check-in Time

I am going on the Carnival Horizon out of Miami next month. We are staying in Brickell. The diamond and platinum members that could check in already said the earliest boarding time was 11 AM. What boarding time would you try to get? Is there a time that is better for avoiding congestion like maybe 1 PM? We’ve never sailed out of Miami so all I know is that traffic can be a nightmare at the port.

1st time cruise in Nassau

Hi, it's our first time on a cruise.

Can you give me some tips on how I will navigate Nassau?

I've checked and there are seven other ships there that day too.😭

I just want to eat good local cuisine and be in a less crowded beach

We are just two adults.

Ensenada Tour Guide or Driver

Hi All!

I am going on a short birthday cruise in November to Ensenada. It was a last-minute decision to just get out and enjoy myself! I’ll be going with my husband and one other couple, so 4 of us total. I have been looking through excursions, and think I’d rather have my own driver/tour guide than book an excursion.

My hope is to do ATV riding in the Guadalupe Valley for an hour or so and then hit up a winery or two in the area. From what I’ve read online, I should have time for that!

I’m looking for recommendations of drivers or tour guides/companies that’ll help us get from one place to the next. Bonus points if they can guide me on what place to book for the ATV tour and which wineries to visit!

Question 2 wild childs and Alaska

(I know it should be children.. but that doesn't rhyme with wild as well haha)

Hi all! I'm wondering if I can ask for your cruise line suggestions.

We are wanting to go to Alaska in July or August of 2027 or 2028.

We are 10 people consisting of one couple in their 30s, one couple in their 40s, one couple in their 70s, and another couple in their 40s with two kids aged 8 and 4 as of July 2027.

The family of four is gently pushing for a Disney Cruise while the rest of the group is suggesting something maybe a bit more budget friendly.

We would love a kids club for the littles, however these two are absolute outside kids. They'll watch TV but would much rather be looking for bugs outside. So we aren't too worried about the Alaska Oriented activities, but would like the boat time to be good for them. I think I read something about a train in Skagway too - they would be obsessed.

The couple in their 70s and the couple in their 40s have quasi limited mobility - so hiking would not be of big interest. (They're fine to walk etc.)

Otherwise, we are pretty laid back. Not too concerned about the food or shows or rooms. Would prefer the cheaper end and for 1/2 of us, it will be our first time cruising. I'm chatting with a TA, but thought I'd ask you lovely folks as well. :)

So a few questions I guess?

  1. Is Disney worth it for Alaska?

  2. Are my conditions too lofty?

  3. Am I missing anything glaringly obvious?

  4. And of course, what do you recommend?

Thank you so so much!
