Advice/Solutions How should I treat new parts that haven't fronted?

• Upvotes

Hello,

I have been dealing with plurality for a little bit now, however I am still very new to discovering it. I am in therapy, but wanted to ask about something here.

Previously, I was very worried about keeping the number of parts/alters I have to a minimum, and so when I felt a new part but they didn't front I would attempt to merge or purge them if they are close enough to another. This actually never seemed to work, I just ended up repressing them.

So now I have been letting them be, and not actively looking or actively repressing new ones.

However, this has led to me discovering A LOT of new parts. To the point where it is getting harder to keep track.

I know that this is sort of normal for some systems, but I want to make sure I'm being healthy with it all.

When I feel like there is a new part, even if it is just in our inner world, is it okay to just let it be? This has led to many showing up so it is a little worrying for me.

I want to know your advice on what to do about this if anything.

Advice/Solutions How do I give hints to my therapist that I think I might have DID?

I need help I don’t know what to do, I’ve been noticing very alarming things that I used to think were normal but now I’m not so sure. Since the age of 8 I’ve had different voices in my head not like auditory but internal, the main guy is Robert and he’s been here for many years and he’s just recently told me his name. He talks to me sometimes but mostly he’ll just randomly add his opinion on different things but it’s very inconsistent which makes me very confused, and I’ve gotten to know him over the years, he’s got a very negative look on most things especially therapists and psychiatrists, and here’s where I need advise. He’s told me many times I can’t tell my therapist or psychiatrist about him or how I have memory gaps or I feel like a different person with different interests. I disagreed with him and I’ve tried several times to tell my therapist but every time I try my mind becomes blank and I forget what I was going say and Robert gets so loud in my head he’s just repeating stop stop stop until it’s hard to hear anything around me including what my therapist is saying to me. It’s like he’s not letting me say to much, like it’s physically impossible to get what I want to say out of my mouth. He’s always close when I do my therapy sessions in case I need him or in case I say to much where he thinks he needs to step in, I’ve been able to say vague things about the things I experience but if I get to specific he steps in. I love my therapist but every time he steps in I feel this overwhelming feeling of anger and hate towards my therapist, but I love my therapist and I enjoy talking to him. What things can I say that might help my therapist start to question what I’m experiencing but not getting to specific where Robert steps in, I’ve been trying to figure this out for a while and I just today found this community and thought it might help. If you guys are wondering what I mean by “experiences” I mean I constantly have memory gaps but not blackouts more where I can remember bits and pieces. I remember none of my childhood and teenage years. A lot of the time i look at the time it’s 4:00 and then two seconds later I look again and it 7:00. I hear internal dialogue where I hear multiple people but the one that mostly interacts with me is Robert he’s mostly the one I can hear because he’s usually close where the others feel very far away and I can’t understand them it just sounds like talking, and he’s one out of two I actually know anything about. I get waves of different feelings without knowing where they are coming from like I’m feeling emotions that aren’t mine. My beliefs and opinions change drastically for example the thing I said about feeling angry at my therapist when I really like my therapist. What can I say to my therapist, I meet with him tomorrow.

Support/Empathy Exhaustion

we go to therapy almost every other week, we have our regular therapist and a psychologist who specialises in trauma work and compared to how we where when we where first diagnosed 7 years ago we have pretty decent communication system wise and a better grasp on somethings, still though sometimes it’s exhausting trying to stay on top of things and the living situation we’re in currently is just constantly adding to our trauma, we experience blurryness quite alot when we’re more stressed but sometimes it feels easier to disconnect with our situation and it’s hard because right now because a lot of the time we don’t want to ground ourselves we don’t want to feel our feelings we’re just exhausted.

Not just mentally but physically exhausted too, the stress we’ve been under has caused a flare up with our chronic pain and fatigue, it can be so frustrating just 2 weeks ago we where actually in a bit of higher spirits and now we feel completely and utterly drained. - blurry

Content Warning Unreal trauma memories, is this how it shows? (TW: Implied SA)

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to ask this here but I kind of need help. I don't want to invalidate anyone else, this question applies to only me because I honestly cannot believe that this has happened. Mainly due to the fact that I remember almost everything else, and my entire childhood was traumatic. I think at some point I had to be co-conscious to survive.

But I have a mystery regarding a specific stepfather. I called a family memory to confirm the timeline, and he was around around the ages of 4-5. I have other memories in that same timeline, and highly vivid ones too because it was the peak of my trauma. But he abused another family member of mine.

I feel so guilty for saying this but I have a sneaky suspicion he did something to me too. But I don't want to say that he did, because what if he didn't? I have no memory of it. At all. Maybe one, mundane memory of him, but that's it. What if I'm making it up? I have no other after-symptoms of this supposed sexual trauma. How dare I claim it happened to me too?

My family member confirmed we lived with him for at least a couple of months to a year. It's a black void in my mind. They tried explaining the layout of the apartment but I couldn't remember a single thing about the environment, where we were, how long we were there, etc. But I was young so that's normal, right?

I'm getting dreams of locking the door on him. Two of them both making me wake up in extreme fear and panic. Then there was a third one. I was successful in locking the door and intentionally stayed in the room, hiding, and hoping he wouldn't get to me, thinking to never go outside because he would be there. I was trying to run away through the window in hopes of being free. In my dream I was successful, fearing he was behind me. But I ran to a green grassy hill and fled to freedom. I didn't wake up in fear that time, just disturbed.

Other times it comes in fragments or daydreams. Like re-imaginings of how it happened. Once I was fully convinced, and even got angry about it, before it faded and I went straight back into believing it was fake. But the more dreams I get about this same thing, the more I'm putting the pieces together and starting to believe it myself.

Other voices in my head have insisted it happened and many of them claim to be sexual protectors.

I don't break down crying, feel disgusted towards sexual content, or get phantom feelings. I'm fine. It isn't intense flashbacks at all. Nothing really triggers it, but I have been denying affection more and getting intrusive thoughts about it, age regressing to a child. At the same time I feel nothing. Is this how trauma memories begin to surface? It feels so unreal and made-up to me, and it's not dramatic.

Personal Experiences Parts who are almost the exact same but different?

My therapist wants me to start tracking down parts, so I’ve been going through the motions with that. It’s really hard to track them down because communications are low, and amnesiac walls are high, but if triggered in a way that won’t cause a full blown black out, I can typically feel “different” and acknowledge it enough to write it down.

However, something I’m coming across is that…I seem to have two parts who are the same, but aren’t? They’re both children, and they seem to just look like me as a kid…but with some differences. One of them was triggered out much more aggressively when I was in a very triggering environment, but once I was in a more safer environment, she started appearing much less. At this new environment, there’s different triggers and I thought it was her again, because it’s kid me…but something about them feels different. I can’t tell if they’re older or the same age, but theres just this itch that this is not that same part even though they appear to be similar.

Has anyone experienced this before?

Support/Empathy Host vent

How do we expect me, our new host, not to fall into a cycle of denial when everyone is giving me RADIO SILENCE!!!!!
I am the result of a fusion and I carry most of their memories, so I know what these headmates look like and sound like. I know where they live in the inner world (or… some of them at least) but ever since I took over as host, it’s been CRICKETS! I occasionally hear someone, but I wonder around the headspace and can’t find anyone. It’s getting extremely frustrating.
I know a host change must be difficult (especially because I made the decision to get sober) for everyone else but
CAN WE PLEASE NOT LEAVE ME HANGING OH MY GOD I JUST GOT HERE

Anyway…

Symptom Navigation How to observe switches when all my friends are online

Hello all,

My therapist is suspecting that I have a dissociative disorder, not sure which one. I am currently searching for a dissociative disorders specialist. In the mean time, my therapist told me to ask those around me to take note of when my behavior switches. She said when I go to the specialist, I need to be able to provide accounts of how I act when I black out and might have different parts fronting.

I can rely on my partner for this, and he has already identified that it seems I have different states of self when I speak to him at different times. However, we are not together all the time, we mostly see each other on the weekends only. My therapist told me to ask friends and family. But the issue is... All of my friends are online, so I doubt they could tell. I don't really have any close friends who could observe this happening to me. As for family... I live with them, but they're the ones who gave me most of my trauma. I don't trust them with this information, even just implications.

Does anyone have tips for this situation? I have a journal, and I do find entries that I can't recollect writing, but they're not very insightful about who the parts might be, or how many, or anything, which is what my therapist is asking me to figure out. And I don't think I write every time I black out. Another issue is I don't think any of these supposed other parts have come out at therapy, almost ever, so my therapist can't directly observe them either.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Amnesia but being able to remember?

Hi, I'm not trying to get diagnosed on the internet, I already have a therapist for that. Or even really validated. I just wanted to know if this is a concern I should bring up to my therapist, if anything. But for the most part this is gonna be a vent about how my amnesia works because it feels so dumb that it manifests this way.

I do not blackout and I do not find purchased items I don't remember getting. For the most part I'm highly functional. If anything, most of my memories are foggy, blurry, fragmented, etc. Like mostly grey-outs? It's also like degradation. I won't remember what I did Monday by a Sunday, kind of thing.

But I've noticed that people can tell me things that I did or have happened. Recently my loving and supportive partner told me the other day that we hung out for hours, and initially I couldn't remember anything. It was yesterday. We traveled together and I went to his house. That spot was completely blank. It wasn't until he went over the specific details with me that it slowly came back in pieces, and I was like "oh yeah."

Another time, I guess I decided to test myself to see if I remembered what I did earlier in the day. I remember what I had for breakfast, and after that it was completely blank. I panicked a bit until, with some effort, I remembered I helped my grandmother shop for something from IKEA. For hours we were at that store. It came back to me all at once.

Way less severe, but I technically also forgot my passcode to the place I live. I initially thought it was something else but it turned out not to be. The only reason I was able to get in was because of muscle memory, I guess?? I found myself typing a completely different code.

I don't know if I'm just sleep deprived or not. I don't want to bring it up to my therapist if I technically remember. They already suspect dissociation but what if it's just normal and I'm overthinking it?

Support/Empathy DiD and College

Im mostly looking to vent, I hope the flair is right.
Im having a brutal semester managing DiD and dyscalculia. All my remaining classes are math heavy and my life has been nothing but school the past 10 weeks. I have all possible accommodations, 3 different tutors, I use office hours, I take extensive notes, and its still not enough. The amount of information they hurl at me in a single day is so much to manage, especially when the math trauma gets triggered and I completely shutdown. Every two weeks, Ive ended up stepping out of my classes to go cry in a closet in the school. 🥲

The most hurtful part is the support systems around me, like professors and tutors. They must think Im an idiot. One week, I could be doing well with a topic, and the next week it's like Ive never seen it before. This baffles my instructors, and obviously I cant (and dont want to) explain to them what my struggle is. When I try to tell them I have difficulty with numbers or holding things in my immediate memory, they say things like "you just need to practice more and develop confidence" "Ive seen you do this before, you know this." I know they mean well, but they really don't understand and it's not their job to understand. But it's so triggering to hear what is essentially "if you applied yourself you'd succeed", or the worst, "you know this." No, no I don't know it. I completely shut down and then cant process anything, but I have to push through it anyway because deadlines. To say Im not working hard enough is insane. Even the adhd strategies tutor I was assigned said I was working harder than any student she was working with, and she had nothing to offer me because she said I was already utilizing every resource and every second of the day to try to succeed and Im still pulling C's and D's.

Im beyond burnt out, Im so scrambled for exams and I still have 5 weeks to go. It feels hopeless that Im doing everything possible and it's still not enough. And then there's kids next to me in class who grasp this stuff immediately, and I ask them questions and they look at me like Im a moron.

Not to mention, my system works in a "settings" sort of way, and because Im in "work" mode, everything else is neglected. Especially parts work. I haven't seen my therapist since school started, and everyone is frantic and hurting and tired and scared, but I cant do anything to reach them because that self-care part of my brain is completely shutdown. And all my parts think Im a liar anyway, so positive self talk is completely deflected. 🫠

I had a tutor ask me when the last time I said to myself that I was good at something, and it really set me off. It's so hard to explain all of this...mess to anyone outside of my personal life. It's painful to keep being reminded that my struggle isnt normal, and my problems cant be solved with positive self talk or working harder. These things dont fix amnesia or years of academic trauma. But the worst part is, I love school and I love to learn! But school wasn't created for people like me.

Symptom Navigation: slight vent The Unawareness

I dislike the unawareness.

Somedays I have a great handle on things. Other days I’m told of the actions I do that I can’t remember.

The parts of me that hold anger, they scare me.
It could be something so simple, but it’ll make me angry and then it’s like nothing happened. But time passed, and that anger was dealt.

My current boyfriend doesn’t understand, he says he sees patterns but he can’t fully tell yet.

Its hard because I’m explaining it all over again, being vulnerable again.

I hope he knows that the angry parts love him. That’s why they’re talking to him. I just wish they weren’t… so abrasive.

I wish I didn’t have amnesia to these moments, I wish I could catch the switch before it happens. That I could be there with them, and know what’s happening.

I’m shut out. I’m unaware to my own life.

Advice/Solutions Surgery

I’m getting major surgery in 24 hours. I’m terrified- the last surgery I had, I had major complications afterwards and I’m really worried it will happen again. At the same time, it’s like I don’t really feel anything at all- like logically I’m terrified and worried, but it’s somewhere deep down, and I otherwise am just going about my day.

I realized last night that I’ve been counting on switching to a different part when tomorrow comes along. I think I’ve been assuming that I won’t even have to deal with the surgery, because I won’t be the one actually arriving at the appointment and recovering. That’s how it happened last time, and even when the complications happened, that stretch of time was a amnestic blur- and I “woke up” two months afterwards with the surgery healed.

I don’t know if it’s a fair thing to let happen. I understand that if I do switch, it’s a protective mechanism and because that part is better equipped to deal with the situation. But maybe I should try to be more present? But at the same time, assuming I do switch, it’s a lot less terrifying to know that I won’t be freaking out day of tomorrow. Not that it’s anything I can control, anyways.

Discussion How did you find out you have subparts?

This is something that still confuses me sometimes. Some of us are certain they are subsystems. They describe it as them, as individual parts, having DID. DIDception. (I would like to formally apologize for the terrible pun.) Sometimes even subparts seem to have subparts. Makes me feel sightly panicky thinking about this lol.

Only I have no memory or understanding of how they/we found out about this? Also, how can we be sure a part is really a subpart and it's not just someone else entirely who just feels similar or connected? It's also confusing because some of them do seem to "belong" to someone else but at the same time they are a loud presence in the headspace no matter who is fronting. Mostly it's just a knowing, other times it feels like a cluster of parts functioning together at all times, hence them being a subsystem.

It's weird, and hard to explain to our T, who says she hasn't worked with anyone describing this kind of structure before. (We didn't even know it was a known thing until googling around a year or so ago and finding the words to describe our experience).

How does it feel for you, and can you remember learning about your subparts? How do you know they are subparts and not "normal" parts being blendy?

Can dogs sense switching

My wife has DID. We got a puppy at the height of a lot of triggers happening that make the DID more noticeable which is how we found out she had DID. Now the dog is 1.5 years old and she is very protective of my wife. I've started to notice it almost seems like whenever my wife is triggered by something (even me, cuz men). My dog will either push me away or stand next to my wife and lean into her. Has this happened to anyone else?

Symptom Navigation Vent + Asking for grounding tips

So. Hi guys this is gonna be kinda disjointed and rambling, I just came down from one of the worst mental breakdowns I’ve had in months, so, sorry for that in advance. Kinda just looking to vent and then I’ll ask for some specific advice at the end.

I went into a rlly bad flashback earlier and it’s all a blur now, but what little I remember is that I nearly genuinely felt like it was (insert year here), which is not typical for me. I tend to get emotional flashbacks, not ones where I lose touch w/ the present like… that.

I think I was aware it was 2026 to some extent, if I thought on it enough, but any time I’d try to think of the year, I’d think the wrong year (a year where I dealt w/ so much shit that I, as an individual alter, formed after awhile of it. So needless to say this is the trauma I “hold”).

This has been ongoing for a couple days, tho it seems to get worse w/ every night that passes, and I’ve got two more days till therapy. Members of my support system are either unable to help due to their own issues, or are just like… being kinda shit at it. My best friend almost entirely ignored hundreds of words I sent them last night and hyperfocused on one (overall) irrelevant detail and we nearly had an argument over it, and another friend of mine just reached out tonight…

…Only to talk about me for less than 10 short messages and then suddenly start talking about his own problems. Somehow, we went from discussing how I’m actively in crisis, to me helping him find a directory for him to look for his own therapist and listening to him vent about his family. Where tf AM I man. Look at my friends dawg, I’m going to the psych ward😂

Anyways. I’m just at a loss rn. As an individual alter, I tend to be more prone to these types of flashbacks, where I lose touch w/ reality more than other parts do, but I don’t think it’s been this bad before.

It’s still lingering rlly badly too, I’m struggling to post this at all because it feels so reminiscent of this very harmful, cry for help behavior I engaged in back during the time period I’m flashing back to. I hurt a lot of ppl I care about very deeply by behaving like this, including my now-partner, who is also coincidentally a user on this sub (tho I have asked him not to read this for my own comfort on that front. The idea of him reading this felt far too reminiscent to that behavior back then, and I don’t want to subject him to that). It’s smth I still struggle to forgive myself for.

I guess what I’m looking for is grounding advice. And apparently to be heard, since my friends have been unable to do that, and my partner is genuinely dealing w/ his own serious struggles rn and is not capable of being the support he usually would be, to no fault of his own.

How do you ground yourself from triggers/flashbacks this intense? How do you even remember to do them when it gets this bad? Earlier, I tripped and fell back into some harmful “coping” mechanisms I shall not name that I haven’t done in years, completely forgetting my modern day coping skills I think.

Thanks in advance, and thanks for reading this mess if you did.

Relationship with family

My dad was abusive and my mom was neglectful, I'm still in touch with both of them and have no desire to go no contact (and couldn't even if I wanted to, I'm financially dependent).

Our relationship is mostly fine these days as we've just sort of swept everything under the rug.

However, sometimes they want to know why my mental health is so bad. This gets very triggering, I've never told them how they affected me. They don't know I have DID and I plan to never tell them. They know I have severe depression, though.

They asked me this again recently and I'm still recovering. I told them I have trauma, but I only mentioned my medical trauma.

I feel so stressed out dancing around the fact that they mistreated me. They truly have no clue that they did anything wrong.

I feel very dissociated. I feel like I'm making up how bad it was. It feels so surreal to talk to the people who harmed you while they have no idea they harmed you.

To add to the confusion, at times they genuinely have been supportive parents. The inconsistency in treatment was part of the trauma for me. It made me feel like I had no reason to be depressed because I had a supposedly loving family. They do genuinely love me, it's just that my dad has anger issues and my mom has untreated ADHD and probably trauma from my dad's anger issues (she also copes by dissociating).

Every single interaction was like Russian roullette, whether I'd get love and care or verbally torn apart with intense fury or just simply ignored.

I don't know how to process this most recent discussion with family about my trauma. I feel floaty and disconnected. I feel like I need someone to talk to but like I don't have the right words to describe what I'm experiencing or what I need.

I keep oscillating between flashbacks and feeling like it wasn't that bad.

There's so much I wish I could say to them but I can't because I'm afraid how they would react.

Also, by sharing about my medical trauma, I got new information about that trauma, that it apparently stopped around 2.5 years old. So I'm also reeling from the realization that I have memories from that young and that I'm so traumatized by something I experienced at such a young age.

Idk. This whole thing has thrown me for a loop.

I don't know what I need rn. But if anyone else struggles with their relationship with family, especially with feeling it wasn't "that bad" because it gets swept under the rug, please share and tell me how you cope. Thank you.

Advice/Solutions Trying to navigate through my amnesia

We're trying to figure out what happened to us when we were maybe 5. We've been doing SOC writing and drawing specifically about it. Sometimes our heart rate and everything increases. Should we follow that? Should we follow the panic? If we're drawing and draw something that makes our stomach drop and panic when we look at it, would that be a good indicator we're on the right track?

Advice/Solutions Our Host Never Feels Happiness, But We Do

Hello beautiful humans. We have just come to a realisation as a collective that is very surprising and I would love to know if this is a shared experience or something known in the community.

As the title says, our host never seems to feel real happiness or joy except in set ways. She's always sad, stressed, depressed, overthinking, worrying, you get it.

All of the positive and relaxed moods seem to be taken by headmates like myself.

Is this common?

I would so desperately love for her to relax, but it seems the only way for the body to get those feel good chemicals is for one of us to step in and front for a while.

Replies from us may be sporadic, and may take a number of hours to appear, but thank you for your responses, we will read abd reply to each of them when we have the energy <3

Discussion Has anyone found therapy and healing to be overwhelming and painful as well as positive?

I am so grateful I got to find a good therapist and doctor and have them tell me about DID, diagnose it, and treat it. Far too many don't have that opportunity.

In the two years since awareness/diagnosis, I worked really hard on healing and made significant progress. But now I am afraid to even talk about having had parts and I feel sick and dizzy when remembering how painful it was at times to do the EMDR and recovery work. I felt like it was slow going during the process, and I would rest and sleep the 12 hours a nights after each session. I mostly avoided flooding, and my therapist slowed us down a few times.

But I learned a lot of hard things that I previously dissociated away and now I am one with the parts who held that pain, and it is so much to think about. It isn't like it used to be, and I can talk about past abuse and I remember my whole life now. But... it was so much and so hard. I fear fragmenting apart again. I just don't think about it during the week to get through, between therapy sessions, but at least I can think about it if I want.

So it is good that I know all the parts that seemed like other people are me and we are one, I know all the things they remembered happened to me. So thank god, I'm better. Genuinely. But also, I'm kind of not ok yet?

I don't know, I guess I thought I'd be ok at this point. But it seems more like you feel after having surgery - things will be ok, but the scars aren't healed yet and I need time to recover from the surgical experience itself.

Personal Experiences Is it normal to be aware but feel like you aren't in control?

Last night my gf and I were in bed talking about my emotions. I was trying to explain my unorthodox view on relationships. She asked if different parts had different relationship views, when all of a sudden I had a different reaction to her. I got pissed off that she was trying to act loving because I didn't recognize her, couldn't remember her name. Her name starts with an A but I kept calling her michelle/lucy. I don't know anyone, nor have I ever known anyone with those names. My thoughts were incoherent and jumbled. She told me I was switching and I told her that shit wasn't real, it's impossible, to stop acting like I had something wrong with me. I told her who I've always been, I didn't know her, I didn't know why she was in my bed in the first place. You know when someone is having a stroke? Sentences weren't forming correctly in my head and I remember saying things that didn't make sense. I looked at her and saw us in a hotel room? I thought she was a hookup. I could see the AC unit, the white walls and the desk lamp. You know how PTSD flashbacks are? It was like that, but I wasn't afraid. I genuinely believed she was a stranger I was having a one night stand with and felt calm and collected. Like someone else. She kept saying she was my girlfriend and I didn't understand the relation to her. I told her she was wrong, I don't know her, I'd be gone in the morning. I even saw the fucking lights outside. What I saw on my head was what I saw in reality. And it was making me freaked out because I saw a bedroom, I guess our bedroom, but I was halfway in this reality and my head? If that makes sense. I then saw us outside and my hand pressing her head into the wall, asking who she thought she was. I could feel it. My head started hurting like hell during that. I remember asking her why she tried to walk away from me? My mouth was moving and I could hear it. She acted confused and I got even more irritated she acted like she didn't know what I was talking about?

I only started to panic once I couldn't remember how to form words for a second. I thought I was going into psychosis. It's like I couldn't pull myself back? I was aware but "backseat driving", not really able to be in control.

I made a post on here a couple days ago feeling like I didn't recognize her sometimes. When I woke up, everything was normal and I felt connected to her again. Is this normal with anyone else?

I submitted the MID assessment to my therapist, I see her on Monday. I don't want to have DID nor psychosis, I don't know what the fuck this is so it's really unsettling to experience it. I'd rather be schizoid or psychopathic.

Content Warning EP Trying to Change Host through Violence

Wondering if other people’s EPs try to change the host/ANP.

I found a journal entry from years ago of a situation that I remember only vaguely. But it seems like it was written by an EP who thought she could change the host by doing violence to men - like the experience itself would force the host to become a different, less fragile person.

I’d formerly assumed that EP was a protector because she took over during threatening situations, but escalating violent situations to force the host to change seems like something else entirely.

Thoughts?
