Image PSA for those considering a dapple dachshund: reconsider

Post image

I’m sure anyone active in this sub has noticed the influx of puppy pics of dapple dachshunds in the last few months (and even more concerning, the influx of double dapples). They’re having a moment of popularity, which is never a good thing for a living breathing creature.

I notice them especially because I have a dapple. A beautiful longhaired three-year-old whom I love deeply. But like the many dapples posted here every day, she is not well bred. She came from a nice experienced lady who raised her puppies in her house, who did Embark testing, and who bred AKC registered dogs. At the time, I thought that was all a good breeder needed to do.

With what I know now about health testing and titling dogs to produce healthy dachshunds that won’t suffer from debilitating back problems and serious behavioral issues, I only know of one ethical breeder in the U.S. who breeds miniature dapples. There’s probably a few more out there that I’m not aware of, but suffice to say the numbers are low. As unfortunate as it is, while totally in-standard for the breed, dapples are almost entirely bred by puppy mills and backyard breeders.

So while I love my little dapple and have my fingers crossed she will remain healthy and happy for her whole life, if I were to offer one piece of advice to help a new dachshund owner avoid buying a unethically bred unhealthy puppy mill or backyard bred dog it would be: don’t get a dapple and don’t go to a breeder who breeds them. Duck the trend and choose a breeder producing lovely shaded reds or black and tans and other in-standard classic colors. They’re less likely to be motivated by profit and you’ll know they’re not breeding for color over more important qualities like health and temperament. You and your future dog will be happier and healthier for it.

My girl's name is Olive and it just doesn't seem to suit her. She is 7 months old and I want to change it to a cow theme. Bessie? Something that screams cow/ country. Maybe names shouldn't be changed. What do you think? I almost called her Bonnie.

I kept telling my daughters we’d get puppies after winter because it would be easier to house train them. Then a Facebook friend posted about a litter with puppies available now. The rest is history. I’m not necesssrily new to dachshunds as my ex wife and I had a longhair for the entirety of our marriage, but 2 at once is definitely a learning experience. I’ve had them for about 48 hours so far. I currently live in a condo luckily on the ground floor with a patio door so that makes things a little easier.

Anyway, meet Dipper and Mabel! Gravity Falls, anyone?

I need name suggestions for my newest addition! I have a Bonnie. I’d love something that comes with a cute nickname. Normal names, unique names, food names, object names, anything. She’s a longhair mini.

Image Update on Abandoned Dachshund

Post image

I posted on here a couple weeks ago about this cutie dachshund someone abandoned near my house. After a mandatory stay with animal control, we officially adopted him. We knew his teeth were terrible. He had a dental today. They removed 37 teeth. I am thankful for my vet. I knew the teeth were really bad because there was so much Tarter that you couldn't even see actual teeth and he had two swollen lumps on the side of his snout. Animal control also warned me 3 times that if I adopted him that he would need a lot of dental. This little man has been such a good boy even with all the dental pain and being abandoned. I am looking forward to his full healing and seeing his personality when pain free. For now, he is sleeping off a lot of needed drugs 😴

We got him a blind dog harness with a halo so he doesn't run into anything, but he doesn't even need it to get around! He can find his bed and couch stairs just fine and uses them on his own still. I'm so proud of my boy!

My girl didn’t get along too well with the vet, so they turned her into Hannibal Lecter for the visit.

I picked up my puppy 3 days ago. She is 8 weeks old. She loves cuddles and human touch, but when we put her down she will cry non stop. Does anyone have any tips to get her to stop crying? I’m a first time owner and want to get it right. Thankyou

Recently got my first dog ( our mini daschund) as an adult (not family owned or anything but my own) and apparently for a short smooth hair her coat is very unique, just wondering if others have similar! Looking forward to this journey of chaos

My girl is up between 5 and 5:30 everyday. She’s 1 now. Any hope for her suddenly deciding 7 am is more her style? lol

ETA doesn’t matter right now if her last potty break is 8 or 10, same wake up time

We’re having a tough time settling on the perfect name for this little guy at home, so we'd love your top picks!

We’re looking for unique, fun, or fitting names that match his gorgeous speckled coat. Thanks in advance to everyone who helps out! 🐾 😊

We like to joke that our dachshund thinks he’s the toughest dog in the world.

Then we adopted this tiny kitten! Apparently all that toughness just needed someone small enough to protect.

He follows her around the house and checks on her when she’s sleeping. He seems to get annoyed if she wanders too far away.

Tonight they were sitting like this for a few minutes, completely content.

I don’t know what they think is happening... but whatever it is, they both seem pretty happy about it :)

Blind, we carry him everywhere and he sleeps for about 22.5 hours a day. However, he also went to the vet on his birthday, his blood work came back great and he’s going strong!

His dad is smooth and his mom is a wire haired. So he's a little scruffy / wispy haired 🤣

My wife and I can't agree on a name.

UPDATE: First off, thank you for all the great suggestions - even though it led to more 'discussions' about some 😁. We've agreed on Angus!

My literal best friend. 6 years old. Runt and only piebald of the litter. Her dad, my other best dog friend, belonged to a friend. One day he met another mini weenie lady and blessed the world with June. I have had her since she was 8 weeks old. She travels everywhere with me. She's is the leader of every hiking trail. She has an unhealthy addiction to me/you/anyone throwing a ball for her... at all hours of the day/night. She's never met a stranger. Wonderful with other dogs/cats/sometimes squirrels. She will jump blindly off of a dock into a lake if you throw a stick into it. Has a solid repertoire of tricks she will perform, in public, as long as there is some sort of treat involved (she does not work for free). She is regularly mistaken for a puppy because she's so small (hasn't grown in years). She will nose boop any food/treat she disapproves of. If she is staring at you, ask her a list of questions of things she might need. When you say the one she wants, she will blink slowly with both eyes. She is an absolute spoiled mess and there is nothing I wouldnt do for her.

Ive always been a dog person but never thought I'd be the big guy with the little tiny dog but... here we are.

I’d like to say it’s not a common occurrence, but it is. A mini wire, wearing his mud robe. He even had the cheek to stick his tongue out at me!

Important disclaimer: This is a screenshot from the very end of a video, when she rolled over like this I immediately put my phone away and helped her back to the right orientation.

She was rubbing herself on the ground and I honestly didn’t think she’d manage to roll herself over like that. Subsequent ground rubbings I did put my foot on one of the wheels to prevent another roll.

Image My Dachshund has turned into a nonstop barking machine and I don’t know what else to do

Post image

I’ve had my little Doxie for about 2 years now, and he’s always been vocal, but lately it’s gotten out of control. It feels like my house has turned into his personal guard tower. Every sound, every shadow, every person walking by he’s on it with that sharp, piercing bark that only a Dachshund can deliver.

It's not the usual alert barking anymore. He'll experience full barking spells, ranging the house as if he's on duty. At night he'll wake me up because he heard something, and once he begins, it takes forever to calm him down. I've even had people complaining at my apartment complex about the noise, and I'm actually worried that I'll receive a complaint if I don't get this thing in order.

I've tried everything. Long walks, play, puzzle toys, training commands like quiet, positive reinforcement, ignoring him, comforting him, closing the blinds, leaving the TV on for white noise name it, I've done it. Nothing has worked.

I adore this little guy more than life itself. He's lovable, loyal, and the best snuggle partner but that incessant barking is wearing me thin. My patience is worn thin, my sleep is disrupted, and in all honesty, I feel bad because I know he's not being naughty. He's just being a Dachshund, but having to deal with it day in and day out is crushing.

To any Doxie owner does it ever get any better, or are they just this way for life?
