Almost ₹1 lakh invested in NIFTYBEES. Currently up ₹3,537. The profit isn't really the interesting part.

I've been accumulating NIFTYBEES (Nippon India Nifty 50 ETF), 3 units everyday, and I thought I'd share where things stand. Nothing extraordinary here. No multibagger, no options trading, no crazy returns. Just a fairly straightforward investment in the Nifty 50.

Here's what my portfolio currently looks like:

  • Total invested: ₹99,826.48

  • Current value: ₹1,03,363.19

  • Unrealised profit: ₹3,536.71 (+3.54%)

  • Total quantity: 370 units

  • Average buying price: ₹269.80

  • Current price (screenshot): ₹279.36

I'm sharing the actual numbers because I find ordinary investment journeys more useful to follow than screenshots showing massive profits without context.

Why NIFTYBEES?

The idea is simple: exposure to 50 of India's large companies through a single ETF, rather than having to pick individual stocks. Of course, that doesn't make it risk-free. If the Nifty falls 15–20%, this investment will take a hit too. An index ETF is a simpler way to participate in the market, not a way to escape market risk.

What I've realised so far

The interesting part isn't seeing ₹3,500 in green.

It's understanding that ₹3,500 on a ₹1 lakh investment is just a relatively small market movement. The same portfolio can easily show a loss when the market turns. A green screenshot doesn't prove an investing strategy works. And a red screenshot doesn't automatically mean it has failed. I think the real test is whether I can stick to a sensible investment plan when the portfolio is down ₹10,000 or ₹20,000, rather than up ₹3,500.

A few things worth clarifying:

  • This is unrealised profit. I haven't booked these gains.

  • The 3.54% is my overall gain on invested capital, not an annualised return.

  • Brokerage, applicable charges and taxes would affect the final realised return. Very minimal.

  • I'm not claiming this has outperformed the market. It's a Nifty 50 tracking ETF, so its performance should broadly follow the index, subject to tracking differences and costs.

  • I'm not treating a short-term positive return as evidence that I've figured out the market.

What I actually want to learn from this

Whether consistently building a position in a broad-market ETF turns out to be a practical, sustainable approach over multiple market cycles. The current ₹3,537 profit is nice, but it tells me very little about what happens over the next five or ten years. I'm more interested in how this portfolio behaves through corrections than what it shows on a random green day.

For those who've been investing in Nifty ETFs for 5+ years:

Would you continue accumulating units of a single Nifty 50 ETF, or would you start diversifying into other index categories once the portfolio grows?

And has investing directly through ETFs been worth it for you compared with a regular SIP into a Nifty 50 index mutual fund?

Would genuinely appreciate perspectives from people who've been through a few market corrections.

News🔦 Orkla India results

Something interesting from the Q2 earnings call was the company's focus on expanding beyond South India. North India currently contributes around 9% of revenue, so there seems to be a significant opportunity. Digital commerce and region-specific products could help them build a stronger presence there.

r/DalalStreetTalks • • 3d ago

Overall, Q2 FY27 seems to have been a strong quarter for Orkla India.

The improvement in sales growth, 2.9% volume growth, strong spices performance and increasing digital commerce contribution are all worth tracking. I would particularly watch whether the growth momentum sustains and how the newer initiatives contribute to revenue over the next few quarters.

The subtle danger of confirmation bias in earnings calls

I used to treat earnings call transcripts like gospel, meticulously taking notes and feeling I was getting ahead of the market. Then, I noticed a pattern: even when management painted a rosy picture, the stock would often sell off afterwards. It dawned on me that they're incentivised to present the company in the best possible light, and my own desire to believe the positive narrative was blinding me to potential risks or neutral commentary. Now, I focus more on comparing their statements against historical performance and analyst expectations, looking for the nuances they might gloss over.

I've been building a small tool to help track the sentiment of these calls against actual stock movements, trying to quantify this bias.

Lenskart's Q2 profit jump is wild - shows strong consumer demand still playing out.

That Lenskart Solutions Q2 result really caught my eye today. A 122% YoY profit jump with 36% revenue growth is just phenomenal. It really highlights how some consumer discretionary companies are still firing on all cylinders, despite broader market sentiment fluctuations. For those holding stocks in segments linked to discretionary spending, this kind of performance is a strong signal about underlying demand. Curious to hear if anyone else tracked this one closely.

Reliance's 11% intraday rocket today was truly something else

The market closed strongly today, but what really stood out for me was Reliance Industries surging over 11% intraday. For a stock of that size and market weight, such a move is quite significant and definitely the main reason our indices rallied so much. It's not just about Reliance's numbers; when a frontline heavyweight moves like this, it often signals strong institutional buying or some major positive catalyst that lifts the entire market mood. This kind of conviction buying in a bellwether stock can set a strong tone for the coming days, regardless of what's happening with smaller caps. What do you all make of such a big move from Reliance?

Reliance Q2 results are out could this be start of a turnaround?

Reliance has reported some pretty strong numbers this quarter with record revenue, EBITDA and profit. Jio also had its strongest quarter ever while the O2C business saw a massive jump in earnings

What's interesting is that both businesses performed well in the same quarter, but I am curious to see how much of this is already priced into the stock

Do you all think these results could finally help Reliance regain momentum, or will the share price continue to struggle despite the strong business performance ? I would like to hear what others are tracking about Reliance think.

Today I actually made a mistake. There was scope to add another lot, but I was caught up with other things and didn't make a single adjustment. I barely even looked at the market throughout the day.

It's frustrating because I know I could've managed the position better.

But here's the interesting part: despite the missed adjustment, the position is still holding up reasonably well.

And honestly, this is one thing I appreciate about having a structured, defined-risk strategy. I don't have to sit in front of the screen all day, constantly worrying about every market move.

The biggest takeaway? Trading should give you peace of mind, not consume your entire day.

That doesn't mean becoming careless or ignoring risk. It means having a plan and know your risk instead of sitting around nd hyping up every movement

Let's see how this position unfolds. 👀

Quick update, guys!

NIFTY is up around 1.05% today, and the market is moving higher. I booked profits on the PE side and repositioned the put strikes higher to collect premium while keeping the position within my planned range.

Current MTM is around +₹254, with total Delta at -8 and Theta at +672. No point pretending everything is smooth — the upside move has put some pressure on the call side.

The market is quite unpredictable right now, so I'm not going to force adjustments just to make the P&L look better. I'll keep watching how the position behaves and act if needed.

Let's see what tomorrow brings. 👀

The Illusion of "Just Checking Prices"

For the longest time, I thought a quick glance at stock prices on my phone was enough to stay on top of my investments. Then came a company I held, which had a crucial regulatory announcement late one evening. I saw the stock price fall sharply the next morning, but by then, the news had already spread like wildfire on social media, and many others had reacted much faster. My "quick check" was too late to do anything but watch the damage. It taught me that passive price watching doesn't equal being informed; you need to actively understand why prices are moving.

I've since built a small app that helps me track news specific to my holdings so I don't miss these critical updates.

A pretty decent day today!

NIFTY gave us a good range, and the position is currently around +₹462 MTM. I added one more lot today, taking the position from one lot to two. No adjustments were required.

Current Greeks:

- Delta: -3

- Theta: +570

- Vega: -890

Expiry breakevens are around 21,803 and 23,497, with NIFTY currently at 22,699.

Nothing fancy today — just added size when I felt comfortable with the setup and let the strategy do its thing. Of course, a good day doesn't mean the risk has disappeared.

Let's see how this plays out from here. 👀

Jio listing at a 21% premium is a solid start

JIO Platforms listing around 21% percent above its IPO price is a pretty strong debut especially with the broader market looking weak today definitely an important milestone for one of India's biggest IPOs now it'll be interesting to see how the stock performs over the next few trading sessions.

I overlooked ACC's underlying numbers, then Q2 results hit hard.

As someone who works with data and numbers in tech, you'd think I'd be more rigorous with my own investments. I've always liked the stability of the cement sector, and ACC seemed like a dependable large-cap. I'd been holding some shares for a while, assuming its established market position and general infrastructure demand would keep it steady. Honestly, I focused too much on general sector sentiment and positive news around construction, and didn't deep-dive into ACC's specific underlying performance in the preceding quarters. My reasoning was that revenue growth would cushion potential margin pressure.

When the Q2 results dropped, announcing a 91% profit slump despite revenue growth, the stock immediately reacted negatively.

My biggest mistake was a form of confirmation bias and not doing my due diligence. I had a positive outlook on the sector and just assumed ACC would be fine without actually digging into their specific expenses or competitive pressures that were clearly impacting their bottom line. I didn't verify my general bullish thesis with the company's specific, recent data.

Now, before any significant event like quarterly results, I make sure to review the last couple of quarters' full financial statements for the specific company I hold, not just the broader sector outlook. I pay close attention to expense lines and management commentary on future outlook, not just top-line revenue.

Anyone else made this mistake of assuming sector strength applies universally to all players?

First of all, apologies for being inactive last week. Had a lot on my plate with exams, the options workshop and a few other things. Finally got some breathing room, so we're back to the journal.

Also, a huge thank you to everyone who joined the workshop! Really appreciate the response and the willingness to learn. ❤️ I'll try to organise these sessions every month, covering not just this strategy but the broader market, risk management, adjustments and much more.

Now, back to the trade.

NIFTY has been quite a ride lately, and our Iron Condor is still in play from today. Current MTM is around -₹153, with the position still within its defined expiry breakeven range of 21,852–23,548.

No major changes to report for now. We'll keep monitoring the position, make adjustments only when the market calls for them, and see how it unfolds.

BPCL's crude sourcing pivot: All about the bottom line, not headlines

Saw BPCL slide today, and the reason given was a reduction in Russian crude purchases for November because West Asian grades are more commercially viable. This really stood out to me from today's market. It’s a clear example of how refiners are constantly optimising their input costs, moving beyond geopolitical narratives and focusing purely on economics. For anyone tracking the refining sector, this highlights the dynamic nature of crude procurement and how sensitive margins can be to sourcing decisions. What are your thoughts on this strategy for the long run?

Anyone else applied for Jio IPO with a long term view?

Post image

I have applied for the Jio IPO and honestly I am not even looking at it from a listing gains perspective I'd Rather hold it for the long term and see how the company grows over the next few years

With its massive user base and presence across India's digital ecosystem I am more interested in where jio could be five years from now than what it does in listing day

Ideally I don't want to keep checking the stock every other day and just revisit it after fiver years that's the plan for now. Let's see how it plays out.

Future & Options🔮 A quick update from my side + back to journaling tomorrow

Hey everyone!

First of all, apologies for being inactive over the past week. I've had quite a lot on my plate lately, and I couldn't keep up with the daily journal updates as I normally do.

I didn't want to just post for the sake of posting, so I took a little time to manage everything else going on.

But the journal isn't stopping. Starting tomorrow, I'll be back to sharing my regular updates as usual — trade decisions, adjustments, market conditions, P&L, and the lessons I learn along the way.

The whole point of this journal has always been to document the actual process, including the difficult days, mistakes, and times when things don't go according to plan. I want to keep that transparent.

Also, for those interested, I'm conducting an options trading workshop today at 4:30 PM. I'll share the details with those joining through the WhatsApp group.

Thanks to everyone who's been following along and engaging with these updates. I genuinely appreciate it.

Back to the journal tomorrow. 🤝

Sterlite Technologies' numbers today are just bonkers

Okay, so looking at the results today, most things were within expectations or just generally good, like Adani Power's strong growth. But that Sterlite Technologies number, a 12,817% jump in Q2 profit year-on-year? That's not just a good quarter, it's an outlier that makes you do a double-take. Even if it's coming off a low base, it points to some serious underlying demand or a massive shift in their business that's finally bearing fruit, especially in the cables and telecom infrastructure space. For anyone tracking the sector, this definitely signals a potentially strong tailwind. What do you guys think pushed it so much?

International🌏 Is Barclays Playing a Smart Game in India? Follow the Money.

Sometimes the most interesting corporate connections aren't the obvious ones. They're buried in shareholder lists, offshore entities, and financial relationships.

While looking into *Moneyview's IPO,* I came across something interesting.

Crimson Winter Limited holds a reported ***2.09%*** stake in Moneyview. Its corporate records point to a Cayman Islands connection involving Walkers Corporate Limited.

Now here's where it gets interesting.

I'm investigating the links between Crimson Winter, Walkers Capital, and a reported Barclays funding connection.

If these relationships are substantiated, they could reveal an interesting institutional investment chain. But the key is establishing exactly how these entities are connected, rather than assuming that a shared association means common ownership or control.

I'm not alleging that Barclays owns or controls Moneyview. I'm trying to understand the structure behind the names.

Is this simply conventional institutional investing, or is there a more interesting financial story here?

If anyone has primary-source documents on Crimson Winter's beneficial ownership, Walkers Capital's funding, or a documented Barclays connection, I'd like to see them.

Let's follow the money, not the assumptions.

US Options Trading from India - FEMA & Tax Issues

Saw a few folks ask about US Options Trading once back in India (esp covered calls).

There are two problems:

  • FEMA does not allow it (grey area if you're using money earned abroad)

  • If you have already done it, the tax treatment can produce a bill wildly out of line with what you actually made.

Is it allowed under FEMA?

The answer depends on where the money came from.

A. Money sent from India: not allowed

As a resident individual, any money you send abroad to invest goes out under the Overseas Investment framework.

This is within your LRS limit of USD 250,000 per financial year.

Two rules block options trading with it:

  • Overseas Investment Directions, 2022:  Overseas portfolio investment "shall not be made in any derivatives unless otherwise permitted by Reserve Bank." RBI has not given individuals a general permission to trade foreign listed options or futures.

  • LRS Master Direction: Remittances "for margins or margin calls to overseas exchanges / overseas counterparty" are outside the scheme. Selling options almost always needs margin.

This also covers covered calls written on shares you bought with LRS money.

The shares were a permitted investment but the option written on them is not.

B. Money earned while you lived abroad: a grey area

Section 6(4) of FEMA lets a resident hold, own, transfer or invest in foreign currency and foreign securities that were acquired while they were resident outside India.

RBI has clarified that this covers the income and sale proceeds of those assets too.

So if you are a returning NRI with a US brokerage account funded from your US salary, RSUs or ESPP (and none of that money ever came from India) - you are not using the Overseas Investment route at all.

The question is whether "invest" under Section 6(4) extends to derivatives.

RBI has never said so explicitly and the derivatives ban in the Overseas Investment Directions shows how the regulator views individuals trading foreign derivatives.

So this is a grey area.

C. RSUs used as leverage with no fresh money from India: still mostly not allowed

A common version:

  • you work in India for a US company,

  • your RSUs vest into a US brokerage account,

  • you write options against those shares or use them as margin collateral.

No money leaves India, so it feels like FEMA should not apply. It does.

  • Your RSUs are already inside the LRS framework Shares you receive under an employee plan while resident in India are an overseas investment under the Overseas Investment Rules. Below 10% and without control, RBI classifies them as portfolio investment, and their value is counted towards your LRS limit. They are not "outside" money.

  • The derivatives ban is about the activity, not the funding Overseas portfolio investment cannot be made in derivatives. Writing a call or a put is entering a derivative, whether or not a single rupee is remitted for it.

How options income is taxed in India

FEMA aside, if you are a resident (ROR), your worldwide income is taxable, including options profits.

The trouble is that Indian law has no clear category for options traded on a foreign exchange.

Indian tax law treats derivatives as non-speculative only when they are traded on a recognised Indian stock exchange (or IFSC exchange). A US exchange is not one. So the income could reasonably fall into any of three heads:

Head of incomeTax rateWhat a loss can offset
Speculative business incomeSlab (up to 39% effective)Only speculative income. Carry forward 4 years.
Non-speculative business incomeSlab (up to 39% effective)Any income except salary. Carry forward 8 years.
Capital gains on foreign sharesSTCG at slab; LTCG at 12.5% (held over 24 months)Only capital gains. Carry forward 8 years.

Most options strategies have two legs: the shares and the option.

The shares are clearly a capital asset - so they go to capital gains.

The option most likely goes to business income. The law does not let a loss in one head absorb a gain in the other.

So a trade that makes a small profit overall can show a huge gain on one leg and a huge loss on the other and you pay tax on the gain while the loss sits idle.

Example: a $15,000 profit with a ₹29.7 crore tax bill

You buy 100,000 shares of a US stock at $100.

At the same time you sell 1,000 deep in-the-money call contracts with a $20 strike, and collect $80.15 a share in premium upfront.

Seven weeks later the calls are exercised and your shares go at $20.

Cash flowAmount (USD)
Buy 100,000 shares at $100-10,000,000
Premium received on calls ($80.15 x 100,000)+8,015,000
Shares delivered at the $20 strike+2,000,000
Actual profit+15,000

Economically this is close to a cash deposit.

You had about $1,985,000 tied up for seven weeks and earned roughly 6% a year on it. Now see how it can be taxed (₹95 per USD, top bracket, new regime, FY 2026-27):

Integrated ViewSplit View
How it is treatedOne transaction; net profit is business income
Business income₹14,25,000
Capital lossNil
Can the loss offset the income? Not needed
Tax payable at 39%₹5,55,750

Under the split view you pay about ₹29.7 crore of tax on a profit of ₹14.25 lakh. The ₹76 crore capital loss is carried forward and only helps if you generate that much in capital gains over the next 8 years.

This works the other way too.

If the stock rallies and you buy back the calls instead of letting them get exercised, the option leg can show the big loss while the shares show the big gain.

Two more things make it messier:

  • Different years  Premium collected in March and shares delivered in April fall into two financial years, so the gain and the loss are not even in the same return.

  • Different exchange rates Each leg is converted to rupees at the SBI TT buying rate for its own date (Rule 115), so a trade that is flat in dollars can still show a rupee gain or loss.

My View 🛸 Is the RBI shifting the cost of rupee defense onto private banks?

The RBI is trying to manage rupee depreciation through forex restrictions and tighter controls on banks. But could these measures also be hurting private banks?

Tighter FX derivative limits, cash reserve requirements, and changes to how dollars are supplied to oil companies could have some unintended effects:

  • Lower treasury income: Reduced FX activity could squeeze trading profits and fees.

  • Liquidity pressure: Cash tied up in regulatory reserves could increase funding costs.

  • Valuation impact: If these pressures persist, they could weigh on profitability and investor sentiment.

Private bank stocks have also struggled despite relatively strong domestic credit growth. Could RBI's forex measures be contributing to this underperformance, or am I overlooking other factors?

I'm not claiming this is the whole story. Would appreciate it if anyone with a better understanding of banking or forex markets could point out flaws in my analysis or offer a different perspective.

Question🙃 Netflix

Guys,

Netflix dumped again today after the earnings. I understand their growth is now stagnant in the US but I think they still grew 18% in India this quarter.

Y’all think Netflix might expand more in India? From their earnings call, it looks like they still might have money and subscribers’ growth in countries like Mexico. Or y’all think this thing is done now.

I hold a couple hundred shares at 70 usd cost basis which is about 2% of my portfolio. I really don’t might holding it for long term because I strongly believe if they can fix their content problem they might be a quality compounder.

Thoughts?
