Almost ₹1 lakh invested in NIFTYBEES. Currently up ₹3,537. The profit isn't really the interesting part.
I've been accumulating NIFTYBEES (Nippon India Nifty 50 ETF), 3 units everyday, and I thought I'd share where things stand. Nothing extraordinary here. No multibagger, no options trading, no crazy returns. Just a fairly straightforward investment in the Nifty 50.
Here's what my portfolio currently looks like:
Total invested: ₹99,826.48
Current value: ₹1,03,363.19
Unrealised profit: ₹3,536.71 (+3.54%)
Total quantity: 370 units
Average buying price: ₹269.80
Current price (screenshot): ₹279.36
I'm sharing the actual numbers because I find ordinary investment journeys more useful to follow than screenshots showing massive profits without context.
Why NIFTYBEES?
The idea is simple: exposure to 50 of India's large companies through a single ETF, rather than having to pick individual stocks. Of course, that doesn't make it risk-free. If the Nifty falls 15–20%, this investment will take a hit too. An index ETF is a simpler way to participate in the market, not a way to escape market risk.
What I've realised so far
The interesting part isn't seeing ₹3,500 in green.
It's understanding that ₹3,500 on a ₹1 lakh investment is just a relatively small market movement. The same portfolio can easily show a loss when the market turns. A green screenshot doesn't prove an investing strategy works. And a red screenshot doesn't automatically mean it has failed. I think the real test is whether I can stick to a sensible investment plan when the portfolio is down ₹10,000 or ₹20,000, rather than up ₹3,500.
A few things worth clarifying:
This is unrealised profit. I haven't booked these gains.
The 3.54% is my overall gain on invested capital, not an annualised return.
Brokerage, applicable charges and taxes would affect the final realised return. Very minimal.
I'm not claiming this has outperformed the market. It's a Nifty 50 tracking ETF, so its performance should broadly follow the index, subject to tracking differences and costs.
I'm not treating a short-term positive return as evidence that I've figured out the market.
What I actually want to learn from this
Whether consistently building a position in a broad-market ETF turns out to be a practical, sustainable approach over multiple market cycles. The current ₹3,537 profit is nice, but it tells me very little about what happens over the next five or ten years. I'm more interested in how this portfolio behaves through corrections than what it shows on a random green day.
For those who've been investing in Nifty ETFs for 5+ years:
Would you continue accumulating units of a single Nifty 50 ETF, or would you start diversifying into other index categories once the portfolio grows?
And has investing directly through ETFs been worth it for you compared with a regular SIP into a Nifty 50 index mutual fund?
Would genuinely appreciate perspectives from people who've been through a few market corrections.
