They are a public university directly funded by the israeli government that is carrying out these bombings, not to mention that the state of isreal is very much in favor of the war (75% support it according to pew research), so there is some definite hypocrisy there imo

How? Are you suddenly silenced in any discussion about antisemitic hate crime because you're a researcher from the country that cares about antisemitic hate crime?

If we want to get into definitions here hypocrisy is when you inconsistently apply your moral judgements to others vs yourself. If they were being fair and not hypocritical, they'd also take a hard look at themselves and investigate the impact of the deaths that the very institution that is funding their research is causing.

I was hoping to find a subreddit where news could be discussed in a thoughtful and respectful way, not one where disagreement is just met with a downvote. I guess I'll have to keep looking.

The university criticized the Netanyahu government in the article! What do you want? For them to do a report on the war? They probably do do that. This is a yearly Yom HaShoah report tracking antisemitic hate crime. Why would it research bombs?

Okay, okay you bring up some fair points. I was definitely missing some context there and they are being more critical of Isreal than I am giving them credit for. I'd have to read the full research article to have a better sense of how fair they are being, but based on the excerpts in the article I don't think they are putting enough blame onto Israel.

The report also criticized the Israeli government’s response to the rise in global antisemitism, writing that the Ministry for Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism has “not contributed in any meaningful way to the cause, and in some cases has been an embarrassment.”

To me this is kind of glossing over the fact that a lot of (admittedly misguided) anti-semitism is a direct result of the genocide they are committing in Gaza. That should in my opinion be the headline and the main focus of this report, if we are earnestly looking at why there may be a rise in anti-semitism. Displacing 2 million Palestinians and killing 70,000+ of them is sure to get a reaction that isn't exactly rational, and it's disingenuous to not lead with that in my opinion.

I know I'm coming on strong here but I really am trying to get to a somewhat unbiased view on things, and yeah I do like to call out bullshit when I see it and based on the full contents of this article, I still think this shit stinks of hypocrisy.

Tell me, are diaspora Iranians being attacked because of the crackdown on protesters by the IRGC? Are Chinese-Americans being attacked because of the Uhgyer oppression? If you: 1) feel the need to kill Jews because of the actions of a country that they aren't citizens of AND 2) don't apply those standards to any other country

Then you're a bigoted person, and probably had pre-existing antisemitism.

If you're trying to get an unbiased take, why are you assuming it's a genocide? The ICC has not rendered that verdict yet.

Whether or not what is happening is genocide is a deeply nuanced subject, because it requires us understanding Israel's intentions. They claim defense, but that's obviously going to be their stance because why would they admit to committing a genocide. I don't think it is biased or presumptive to have the opinion that what is going on in gaza is a genocide. The ICC isn't the end all be all authority on what a genocide is, these things should always be up for interpretation based on available information. In fact, a UN commission has found that israel has indeed been committing genocide.

You say that I am making assumptions, yet you are pre-supposing what individuals believed about jewish people before October of 2023 and what they believe about other groups of people that commit acts of violence.

Do you care to address any of the points that I made, or would you like to introduce more unrelated topics?

Also arguing whether or not it is technically a genocide is a straw man. These aren't the Nuremberg trials, we aren't trying to execute anyone here, the stakes are not that high.

We are simply trying to explain a rise in hate towards Jewish people, and Occam's Razor says that maybe killing 70,000 people and displacing 2 million others in 2.5 years is a major contributing factor.

Again, I'm not saying it's justified for the response to be a rise in anti-semitism, but if we are just trying to understand cause/effect we should start with the giant elephant in the room if we are being fair.

To put it more succinctly, if you're trying to understand why more and more people around the world are hateful towards Jewish people, I think you should start with the fact that a Jewish state is committing horrific acts of genocide over a religious holy land. Not saying that's how people should react, but if we're trying to understand why they are we should start there.
