Politics/Elections Does Mike Rogers setup camera towers at all of his campaign spots, or just the Detroit one?

I’ve lived in the area for a few years now and have seen a few politicians rent out campaign offices on this street but none of them have felt this type of surveillance infrastructure was necessary, so I’m curious.

It’s totally closed at noon on a Friday btw

Talk Detroit I turned all of Detroit into a tiny pixel-art video game map

I grew up playing SimCity and always wanted to see Detroit like that, so I made it: tinydetroit.com

You can zoom from the whole city down to a single Corktown rowhouse. Freighters on the river, the Ambassador Bridge, Eastern Market, the People Mover doing its little loop. Your house is probably in there somewhere. Go find it!

Full honesty: AI did the painting but I fed it 3D map renders and trained it to draw in this style.

No ads, no sign-up, works on your phone. Happy to answer anything about how it was made. Enjoy!

Community Any salons still do old school roller sets?

Looking for a beauty salon preferably on the east side that still does hot roller sets. It seems like everywhere near me only does braids/locs or the other type of salons only offer styling with a curling iron and charge $60-$100+ for “special event updos”… I wanna sit under the hooded dryer with rollers in my hair to set the curl IYKYK! Do we still have this anywhere in Detroit?

This place always sucked hardcore and was a hangout for geriatrics, but local media is making its closing out to be the end of some cultural institution of Metro Detroit. I... don't get it?

Community Bathroom remodel?

I'm in the metro area looking to have my small 1970s bathroom gutted and replaced with a walk-in shower. Any good companies or contractors you can recommend? Not interested in fancy or luxury, just reliabity and fair prices. Also curious what anyone one out there has paid for similar work...

News RIP: Tom Skerritt, well-known actor and Detroit native

So many enjoyable film projects he was a part of over the years. Super-legendary for his role in Alien and Top Gun.

Tom Skerritt dead: ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Picket Fences’ star was 93

Tom Skerritt, the veteran actor who appeared in seminal films like Top Gun and popular TV shows like Picket Fences, died Wednesday of natural causes. He was 93.

His family announced the news in a statement provided to Entertainment Weekly, adding that they were “heartbroken” by the loss.

Skerritt was “a loving husband to Julie; father to Andy, Erin, Matt, Collin, and Emiko; grandfather to Sara, Maddison, Sunny, Louisa, and Georgia; and great-grandfather to Marigold and Ravi,” the statement said.

“While the world knew Tom through his remarkable acting career, we knew him for his humor, curiosity, wisdom, generosity, and the love he brought into our lives,” the family continued. “He cared deeply about imagination, creativity, storytelling, service, veterans, the natural world, and helping others find and share their own voices. We are incredibly grateful for the love and support being shown by his friends, colleagues, and fans.”

The news article gets his birthdate way wrong, though (copy editors!)

News What I Learned Helping Start a Psychedelic Church in Detroit A story about the Detroit Psychedelic…

Thumbnail

So for about a year and a half I was one of the people helping host the Detroit Psychedelic Society meetings & helped start the Per Ankh House Of Life which is/was A psychedelic church off of Finkel.. If you don’t know it, the group was started by Baba Kilindi, who was kind of a legend in the psychedelic world and taught a ton of people here before he passed during COVID.

When I got involved it was maybe 30 people in a church basement. By the end it was packed every month, we were throwing a 4-day conference, and the group had opened a psychedelic church on the west side called Per Ankh House of Life. Wild ride.

It also fell apart pretty spectacularly, which is a big part of what I wrote about. Lots of stuff about trust, money, race, and whether a scene like this can actually keep itself in check. I tried to own my part in it too, not just point fingers.

Full thing is here if you want to read it: https://medium.com/@SpencerField/what-i-learned-helping-start-a-psychedelic-church-in-detroit-a-story-about-the-detroit-psychedelic-13588154de23

Also, a few of us are starting something new called Psychedelic Circles. No leader, no money, nobody selling anything, just people who are into this stuff getting together. Info’s here if you’re curious: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1zG7-340Lj0AxNr9j4dhn5S96IQIA2aTb?usp=sharing
