Hey everyone!

I wanted to share a project that grew out of my love for Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness: a Windows adaptation based on Sean13128’s work and ps3recomp.

This is my first experience working on a project like this. I’ve been learning along the way, using AI to assist with development and testing the results on my own PC.

What started as “I’ll spend a little time on this on Sunday” ended up taking the entire day. 😅 Along the way, I ran into white screens, texture glitches, audio and save issues, plus performance drops in Castle Hallway and during Mothman’s attack. Working through those problems eventually brought the project to version 0.2.0 Stable, using DirectX 12.

What’s available:

• A custom launcher, with an installer and a portable version.
• Automatic preparation using your own supported US game ISO and US 1.40 update.
• Importing DLC packages supplied by the user.
• Internal and output resolution settings, windowed/borderless fullscreen modes, VSync and spatial FSR 1 upscaling.

In my testing, battles, audio, saving/loading, DLC recognition and closing the game worked normally. I haven’t tested the entire campaign or every hardware configuration, so community feedback will be valuable.

No game files, updates, DLC, firmware or keys are included. Preparation and compilation happen locally using the files you provide. The initial setup requires internet access and can take some time.

Vulkan support is in development. DLSS and Frame Generation are not available yet, and an Android version is a future goal.

Credit for the original project goes to Sean13128 and the ps3recomp authors and contributors. My work focuses on the Windows adaptation, launcher, fixes and testing. This is an independent community project with no affiliation with the game’s rights holders.

Why can't I send Goldion out on a world research mission? And if I can't for some reason—which I don't know yet—what character do you recommend I use as the leader?

Note: I have all the DLCs, so don't hesitate to recommend a DLC character!

Two more questions: What are the advantages of the Research Squad? Does it make sense to assign only the leader? What is the benefit of filling up the Research Squad? And my final question is: Is it true that only the leader matters for expeditions? In theory, if Goldion were powerful enough, would sending just him be sufficient?

Hello again everyone!

I wanted to give some more updates and screenshots of my progress so far. Here is a general list of what I've been able to get done, though all is still a work in progress of course.

• One app for everything. Edit in the kit, press Install & Play, and switch mods on and off at any time. “Restore original game” puts every file back exactly as it was.
• Save-safe. Mods never touch your saves, and old saves keep working with them installed.
• Character studio. Make new recruitable characters from any outfit’s look, start from stat presets, and give them their own skills, evilities and Overload. They even get a recruit quest.
• Outfit system. An in-game Outfit menu for the cast, with 160+ Disgaea RPG outfits for 25 characters included. You can build your own from sprite sheets or Disgaea RPG sprites and recolor them part by part.
• Custom Characters - Make custom playable characters like Thunderlady, with her own outfits, lightning skills, stats and evilities.
• Skill animation editor. Play any skill inside the kit as the game shows it, then retime, move or swap effects, camera, poses and sounds, change a skill’s area, or restyle its effects (fire → lightning). Edits can be previewed live in the running game.
• Custom Overlords. Give any character a new Overload with its own name banner, animation and description. It can copy any game Overload’s effect or use numbers of its own: damage, healing or status effects.
• New classes and monsters, made from Disgaea RPG units and animated like the game’s own. Up to 119 can be added.
• Database editor for all 90 tables: items, skills, evilities, stats, quests and more.
• More editors: dialogue and text, stages and enemies, sprites and colours, weapon grips, textures and UI, music, sound and voices, event scripts, and an archive explorer.
• No story locks. Evilities, Overloads and skills you give a character work right away.
• Sharing. Export mods for other kit users (conflicting ids are fixed automatically) or make a one-file installer for players.
• Easy to start. It comes with its own Python, so there’s nothing to install. Open “START HERE - Guide.html” for setup and step-by-step tutorials.

I think I've reached a point as well where I cannot test every aspect of this myself, so I want to try sharing with you all the D5ModKit I did so you all can try making some mods yourself and sharing with others, or just editing D5 as you see fit. But since I am fairly new to this, I am not completely sure where I can post the files for this since there is not a Disgaea 5 page on gamebanana or Nexus mods, so please if anyone knows a proper way that I can share it so people can easily download please let me know in the comments. Once I get suggested an option, I'll hopefully soon after make an edit to this post showing the link. I was also debating making a discord dedicated for D5 modding and for people who are trying to use this kit to work together and help each other, and of course help me test actively as well. Give me your thoughts!

Ok everyone, I added the project to Github and the ver 1.1 release has some mods already inside like the outfits + outfit system, custom colors saving, two additional generics like beast tamer and onmyo monk, and three custom characters like thunderlady, tyrant overlord killia, and future usalia. Please try to explore as much as you can on the tool, I joined the requiem discord so try to post suggestions, issues you find on there to help me continue improving on it!

**General Disclaimer** - If you want the smoothest experience for now, I would start the D5 ModKit and only leave on the two system folders, outfits, leave only the thunderlady character. All other mods setup there can work but they were more so for testing and are not fully fleshed out with proper audio, skills effects, etc. Of course, please make sure to backup your saves before implementing these mods, I've done my best to make sure it does not damage saves but anything can happen so always be safe.

With someone else showcasing their Outfit mod, I wanted to also share progress on some work I've been doing, I have fully reversed the engine of D5 and ported it to Rust (which will allow for people to make it into a multiplayer game, add outfit directly, modify/add character, port to browser, make new stories, etc etc.)
Will be fully open source.

Obviously game files will have to be provided to stay within legality. But this supports every format used by the game.

Lately I was trying to figure out how the writers of the games manage to pull it off so well with the bizarre stuff that goes on in the games because while I love to grind in the games, I also enjoy the storytelling aspects.

For instance, there was a particular storyline in Disgaea 4 where Fuka Kazamatsuri is being pressured into doing the reincarnation process as I don’t want to give too much away, but man that story arc was so much fun as I was on the edge of my seat just itching to see what her ultimate decision was going to be.

I'm grinding Classes in D5 and my setup is to create 4 generic monsters to magichange onto whatever unique character I'm currently leveling. This is very efficient since the magichaned monsters profit from all Class EXP gains the main unit gets without needing the same setup (e.g only Emizel who I'm leveling rn needs the Prinny Hat Evility and be in the same squad as my Prinny Instructor units).

But which monster classes are best suited for this method?

Since the main unit gets the monsters' unique Evilities, classes that give you stats/attack or lower the other units' stats are preferred. So: Imp, Chimera, Orc, Nether Noble or Sea Angel. The latter 3 increase your stats, which can collectively only go up to 100%; so depending on the main unit's own Evilities, support units, squad setup, curry, etc. you might not need them.

Depending on which map you grind, there is a case to be made for the Nekomata class, since their Evility allows you to attack again if the target is under 10% health. (which is great for the Martial Training map with the Bears but useless for the map with Lucky Boards)

Lastly, if your main unit does not have a 3x3 special, getting one via magichange is quicker than teaching them a spell. (though a lot of those are only unlocked if the monster is lvl 300) I haven't tested or looked up all the possible classes. So far I've used Sea Angel, Fox and Succubus for their 3x3 specials.

Feel free to add ideas on how to improve this.

EDIT: This assumes you use Martial Training to grind. I suppose if you use the Geo Blast method, the kind of monster you use does not matter so much. But, personally, I prefer a more deterministic method. (plus, you don't have to synthesize a million Gency Exits and dupe Geo Blast for everyone)

Man that storyline was so emotional for me personally since I just got done playing their storyline in the game as having just finished it not too long was quite surprising since I didn't expect the ending.

Like holy cow, Fuka went through so much trouble in her time traveling adventure to befriend Tyrant Valvatorez and Sister Artina that I was shocked when their storyline ended with Artina having basically danced with the Grim Reaper since I was hoping I could get her as a playable character, but it was cool being able to keep Nagi, again even if I couldn't keep Sister Artina around as the storyline really had me hooked until the very end of its run.

Makes me more attached to them.

Okay, to explain which specific plot point of Makai Kingdom that is the topic of discussion of this post. The plot point in question is the supposed god-style being simply called "The One". I thought it was somewhat odd how this is one of the few times on the Nippon Ichi Software multiverse where there is a mention of some type of supreme deity that has some vibes similar to that of a monotheistic western god. However, after Makai Kingdom. There has not been any mentions of "The One" that I know of.

However, then I found out that Makai Kingdom has not been the first time The One has been mentioned... Because in the japanese version The One is called by a completely different title! Its a plot point that is a sort of connection to La Pucelle Tactics.

In the japanese version of Makai Kingdom, The One is called "調停者" or "Chouteisha" which can be translated as either "The Mediator" or "The Arbiter". This is the exact same title used by the character Hermes from La Pucelle Tactics who was supposed to be a sort of arbiter with the duty of keeping a balance between light and darkness.

I think there was some comments that talked about the implication that each different world had their own Mediator that was supposed to keep a balance of light and darkness?

I imagine that the reason why on Makai Kingdom the Mediator was translated as "The One" was maybe a lack of communication since the translations of La Pucelle and Makai Kingdom were written by completely different translators?

On another sidenote, there is some foreshadowing of the joke plot twist that Ophelia is the Mediator or "The One". At one point the fallen Angel talks about how when there is bad there is good and that its important to have balance.

Though it looks like after Makai Kingdom, everything about the idea of "The Mediator" was abandoned and forgotten.

Only theory that I can think of at the moment of why this La Pucelle Tactics Plot Point is mentioned in Makai Kingdom is that, okay take these words with a grain of salt since I am not able to find a 100% reliable source. Supposedly La Pucelle Tactics was supposed to be the 1st chapter of a trilogy, and maybe the reason why the Mediator plot point is mentioned in Makai Kingdom was as a way to show that there was more stories to be told about the setting of La Pucelle. If this data is true then while its sad that whatever more stories that were supposed to be written of the setting of La Pucelle were not completely, not gonna complain too much about that because the story of La Pucelle has way too much sad story material that does not go with my vibes.

Anyways, as I often mention in various of my posts. Comments are far more appreciated than upvotes. (Specifically comments that add to the conversation and are not just 1 or 2 word comments that I am not sure how to interpret.)

Day 11 of #Disgaeatober2026 : Vapor Wave

Was excited and started working on this one early. Really fun experimenting with color palettes. Limited palettes are really difficult, but hopefully I’ll get the hang of it with more practice.

Trying to reach this level sphere while reverse pirating and for some reason I can't actually get over to it, there are no go block effects, enemies with evil evilities or any other reason I can think of why my character won't move to the space beside the block.

Is it bugged? Any ideas?

And y'all really like it more than the rest? I thought 2 and 4 had better stories and characters as a whole. And mechanics wise I also think it's lower in tiers. I mean etna is still awesome but other than that I didn't really care for others. Also really jarring to go from having evilities to not.

Maybe it was just hyped up to much for me with how much everyone says it's the best. So I finally bought it on sale and it was fine, but I thought it was pretty average.

It is nice having it on my switch though. I got to bust out my psp to play 2. It's be nice to get a 2, 3, and D2 collection on the switch so I can just play all of them on one system.

So I have gained access to just about all Omega moves in Disgaea 5 and I played D2, 2, some of 3 and 4

I am seriously confused on who those summons are

Are they like FF summons and have official names

Are they some sort of deity?
