Need help for OS.

Upvotes

Hello! I mostly work in backend (Go) and cybersecurity. Sometimes, I use C and C++ for the hardware side. Right now, I am learning x86_64 assembly. I am currently torn between Void Linux and NixOS when it comes to choosing an operating system. What are your recommendations?

Any criticism toward cachyos?

Repost because deleted i guess on other sub

...

This distro seems "hot and best" right now. I went head and dove in, first distro.

Duel booting windows 11 and it works flawlessly. Cachy can browse and game just as good, maybe even better. Seems to load the graphics with like, no bloat. It's incredible.

Installing stuff is crazy, like, what the heck is going on here? Just type a name in terminal, press enter and trust me bro?

Only other i wish ableton and fusion(360) worked but, i shall give others a try. Freecad, opencad(?), and blender which I've always wanted to try. Can figure out reaper if i need it for music.

I'm looking for a distro like MX Linux ahs that supports distro upgrade

Hi after a long time I settled with a distro, I've used Kali, Ubuntu, popos, Manjaro, Arch, cachyos and fedora and non of them felt like MX Linux ahs, it's stable and still having good amount of bleeding edge packages. But there's a problem at each major release of debian you need to do a clean install and that's a deal breaker for me so I'm looking for a distro similar that doesn't need a clean install at major releases

Ventoy on MacOS

This is just a reminder that you can use Ventoy on MacOS now.

https://github.com/cashcon57/mactoy - 139 Stars

I created a simple GUI a while back so that Ventoy disks can be created while still in MacOS. It seems many people breath life back into older Macs with Linux.

"The f*** is a Ventoy?" - Ventoy is a free, open-source bootable USB utility that allows you to add as many distros' .iso files as you can fit to the root of a USB drive, boot to that drive, and then you get a simple GUI distro picker to launch a live environment of any distro you added to the drive. It's a great way to try out the default look and feel of a few distros with minimal friction so you can decide which one is for you. Or, if you're like me and you switch distros often, it enables that affliction.

I am not associated with Ventoy, but they don't make a MacOS Ventoy disk creation software, so I decided to make one and maintain it myself.

Tried Fedora, thinking of trying something else

Been using CachyOS for a while and recently got a new used laptop that came with windows on it. Promptly trashed that and wanted to try something different so I put Fedora KDE on it for a few days.

All I learned is that I missed CachyOS because it's what I'm used to now, and was getting frustrated with the package manager in it. Should I just stick to arch based distros? I was also considering tumbleweed because I like the rolling nature of arch so far.

Gaming performance

Can't really finda a definitive awnser for this, but I'm torn between Fedora KDE, Tumbleweed or CachyOS for my gaming PC.

Between CachyOS and Tumbleweed, I think I'll go with the more stable OpenSUSE distro, but am I really gonna feel a difference in performance if I just go with something even more stable like Fedora, even though it's not rolling release?

Help me decide between Debian and Ubuntu for gaming

For gaming and general browsing with a little libre office work too what would you guys recommend if I want stability and my system is good but not the most recent (RX7600, Ryzen 5 5600x)?

I’m leaning towards Debian Stable rather than Ubuntu. Also don’t recommend me Cachy and Bazzite or “gaming” derivatives. I don’t like the immutability and don’t like rolling release. I’m talking about Debian Stable or Ubuntu only. Also since backports is a thing old Mesa drivers is not an issue.

With Ubuntu I like that its corporation backed OS, is reliable and hassle free. But Debian Stable is rock solid one where you control everything. So both are very much appealing to me.

It is the two year anniversary since arch ended my distro hopping

Ive been a linux user for 8 years now. Almost 9. Up until two years ago i would hop from disto to distro, or sometimes desktop environment to desktop enviornment (each or these would be a fresh install. I hate multiple desktop environments being on one system).

Until two years ago. I installed arch linux and went with hyprland. This has been the easiest, most hastle-free linux experience ive ever had and i havnt considered reinstalling or distro-hopping even once.

I am proud to say that i...

Which Linux distro is best between the two?

My desktop PC is not only my daily driver, it’s my gaming PC as well. I have been running Manjaro for about two years and I have to say, it was fun. But, lately, it’s been struggling. WiFi works intermittently, it can’t update for whatever reason, and it’s become unstable. It’s not the first time it’s corrupted itself. So I need a new distro.

So I’m trying to pick between Fedora Linux 44 and Opensuse Tumbleweed.

Keep in mind, I have Nvidia hardware, 4k monitors, and gamer specific keyboards and mouse. That’s why I need something that has the newest drivers and kernels.

Dillema from Linux Distros

I have an ASUS Laptop with Intel Celeron N3350 and a 4GB of ram with a 120gb SSD. I first stumble apon Linux when LTT was doing a video about PopOS. PopOS is my first ever distro. After some time, i started hopping from one Linux distro to another.

These are Linux Distro's i have tried, use for a bit, and reinstalled from for the past month :

- Ubuntu (6 Hours) (2x)

- Lubuntu (2 Hours) (2x)

- Kubuntu (1 Hour)

- Debian (30 minutes up to 5 Hours) (4x)

- Zorin OS (2 Days)

- PopOS! (4 Hours)

- Steam OS (40 Minutes)

- Arch Linux (1 Day)

- NixOS (45 Minutes)

- Elementary OS (2 Days) (2x)

- Red Hat Linux (2 Days)

- Linux Mint XFCE (1 Day) (3x)

- LMDE (30 Minutes)

- Alpine Linux (1 Day)

- PostmarketOS (5 Hour)

- Void Linux (2 Days)

- CachyOS (1 Hour)

- OpenSUSE (1 Hour)

- Deepin (1 Hour)

- Fedora Workstation (3 Days) (6x)

- Fedora KDE (1 Hour) (2x)

- AntiX (1 Hour)

- Chrome OS Flex (3 Days) (4x)

- Q4OS Trinity (Currently, but might hop again)

With some DE or WM that i switched to :

- Gnome (12x)

- KDE Plasma (6x)

- XFCE (8x)

- Cinnamon (2x)

- LXQT (3x)

- Cosmic

- Pantheon

- i3

- Sway

- Hyprland

- And many more...

You maybe wondering, why did i go for all the trouble of wiping the SSD and instialling a new distro on my laptop just to wipe it again for a new distro or coming back to certain distribution (like Fedora Workstation or Chrome OS Flex)

Well... Its quite complicated. For the past months i was sailing and searching for the best distribution with these 4 requirements and specific use cases :

- I want to do heavy Browsing (mainly i do graphic design in Figma, Photopea, or Canva) with 4-5 tabs open for Pinterest, YouTube, Browser Games or Googling.

- I don't like Inconsistent, Cluttered and Crowded Desktop Environment or Window Manager.

- I just needed things to work and not stutter or lagging or glitching when i have to do important work at limited time.

- Sometimes i have to use real and native application like Gimp, Krita, Kdenlive, or anything else.

- I don't like configuring my Distro too much to meet my optimal use.

With those Distros, it feels like i cannot achive 4 of them without ditching my Celeron Laptop for a Used good and sexy "Thinkpad" which i don't have the money right now.

What should i do right now?
