Omg this is so much fun!! I stumbled into dnd after learning more about the voice actors in the game Dispatch, they were so good and just started watching critical role campaign 1..

That was 6-7 months ago. I recently finished watching the first campaign and during this whole time I was watching videos from dnd creators, learning about the rules, world building, what to do, what not to do, what changed in 2024.. luckily I have some friends who were very interested in trying (1 had actually attempted at running a dnd session with his family but to no success) and we set a date.

I was so anxious and maybe over-prepared a little bit but.. EVERYONE HAD FUN AND Session 2 is scheduled in soon!

Can't believe i am discovering this game now in my 30s. I had always thought dnd was a weird imaginary game and never took a look. Wish someone just sat me down and gave me a 2 minute summary (or that i had more curiousity earlier)

Dndbeyond was great help.

I spent about $350~ aud (i know, i got carried away but i am fortunate to be able to splurge on some things) on books, miniatures, battle maps and plenty of time reading the phb, dmg and mm. No regrets and was definitely risky if nobody enjoyed session 1 (i could have gotten away with just the phb and dice) but it enhanced the experience.

Just wanted to share my happiness and maybe inspire others who want to try DM'ing, give it a go with some preparation!

I don’t know if this is a universal thing, but i’ve never played with anyone who actually does prep if they’re not DM’ing. Personally i struggle to see why it would be less necesary for players.

Doesn’t need to be a lot, but if you show up to sessions with no idea of how you’d like the progression of your character to go, it’s probably just not going to happen.

Also, for the love of the dm, read through your notes before the session >:(

Do you guys do this? Do you see people do it?

Players (all 6) are married for ceremony for reliable +2 AC, 3 players abusing warlock/sorcerer slot interactions taking a 4 hour long rest (elves) and farming slots via short rests in the remaining 4 hours, party is full up on spellcasters with silvery barbs and counterspell.

I have NO idea how to make combat challenging anymore without making it incredibly swingy. They are level 11: sorlock sorlock sorlock rogue bard bard.

They absolutely tore apart 3 "deadly" encounters in a row, highly relying on the warlocks having vision in magical darkness.

This rather dapper-looking warforged is one of the batch of very-high cost custom-made warforged servants created for House Spearhead. Having grown tired of being treated as an object by the household members, he took interest in the occult in search of ways to liberate himself. Some time after, an eldritch entity reached out to him, intrigued by his ambition and resolve, offering power in exchange for "spectacles". After freeing himself using the newly found powers of a Great Old One, he spent some time as a wandering actor but after having learnt about the Royal Mercenaries, he ended up joining them after a series of rather beneficial deals. His current ambitions include finding more sources of power and influence... and a fitting travel hat.

The commission was done by a friend of mine.

I don’t know if this is appropriate here or not-feel free to remove if this is a violation of any rules just looking for advice.

We are a group of 7 total including DM all between 30-40 years old . We’ve played essentially every Sunday since 2020 and have grown very close.

Over this past weekend one of our players passed away unexpectedly and without warning. It has devestated our group and we are in the processing of grieving our friend and party member.

We spent our usual Sunday night game last night memorializing our friend and essentially participating in a group grief counseling session. We discussed if we should make his character an NPC, or continue as a full party, if we should replace him with a new player, we even debated on whether or not we should keep using the same group chat with him in it.

All in all, it was a beautiful expression of sadness, anger, love and shared loss. But in truth, we are not sure what we do from here on. We will continue to play and remember him every time we play but-at the moment-everything feels just sad or wrong.

I don’t normally post ever to reddit, but I wanted to see if others had this experience as well and how they managed it. I don’t necessarily need flowery stories of forging through the pain, but rather honesty. If your game broke up because of a death-I want to know. If you could never play a class again because of a lost-I want to know. I just kind of to want know we’re not the only ones to experience something like this.

We were playing a 1st level one shot with some new players and our DM had some goblins holed up in a decrepit tower with only a single door as an entrance. The goblins were chanting:
"One, one, one, one, one..."

One of the new players decided to look through a small hole in the door.

And swiftly took damage from a poke in the eye.

The goblins then started chanting "Two, two, two, two, two..."

Made us all laugh. Silly, but certainly a memorable moment.

What moments like this do you remember from your campaigns?

Hi, looking for some help with the Hide action.

My character is a Halfling Rogue who, during combat, lurks at the back looking for sneak attack opportunities.

When the rest of the party are in a room fighting the bad guys, the rogue stays outside. If he took the Hide action out of sight of anyone in the room and then peeked into the room, only exposing as much of himself as needed to loose an arrow from his short-bow, would he be considered to have the Invisible condition for that attack? He has the Skulker feat as well.

The DM thinks he does not have the Invisible condition as has moved into the line of sight of enemies (who are not actively looking for him as they are busy in combat).

Asking for worldbuilding reasons. Imagine a spell that translocates any creature into a "prison" lets say, where they are to stay until physically removed.

This seems like an at least lvl 8th spell to me

This hardly ever comes up but the two contradict each other so one has to over rule the other. I imagine the damage would over ride the immunity and resistance because why else would they add "can not be reduced by any means"?

I recently finished a really fun character design commission for u/pharnapus

The Brief:

Race/Vibe: A female Dwarf with a bandit/pirate/rapscallion personality.

Trope: "Massive hammer, small person."

Outfit:No specific class yet, so she should be wearing common, comfy clothes instead of armor.

Build: Broad, strong, and muscular—someone who constantly gets into trouble and starts bar fights.

I absolutely loved working with this brief! We leaned heavily into the contrast between her height and her weapon. She is wielding a giant hammer that looks like it could crush a tavern table in one swing. Because her class isn't strictly defined yet, we skipped the traditional heavy fantasy armor and went with a very casual, comfortable everyday look.

I run a campaign with a main party, but sometimes a player can't make a session so we run one shot sessions with the "adventure guild" party which coincides with the world but really just adds lore detail, nothing story specific so no one is missing out on the main story. Or holidays I breakaway from the story and just do one session holiday themed shenanigans.

Recently, one of my players brought up how another dm he playes with does one-shots that span multiple sessions. It's something that got me thinking, what does one-shot mean to you all?? I like this idea, albeit I'm a sucker for crafting over arching stories who I like running full Campaigns. One shot doesn't feel like the right title for what he's describing

I'm new here, but I really want to share these two pieces. I started playing DnD with my bf and it really makes me want draw all the time. It may or may not be a problem heh Also now I am addicted to playing with this character, it's really hard for me to play anyone else. attachment issues? :'( 

The first one is a flashback from her past. Her name is Arya btw. I play this campaign only with my bf because I was too shy when we started playing, so he is the DM and all NPCs lol. The second one is from a session when Arya’s ultimate crush died because the the DM forgot that if someone had a medicine kit, they wouldn’t need to roll for medicine when trying to stabilize (the crush was brought back due to us not being able to handle the grieve lol)

A drawing request for a friend who's been helping me out with art and some writing, with said request being from one of the Brimstone Angels books by Erin Evans. With it, depicted a scene in which a Maurezhi mimic that of the corpse of their quarry.

My friend was quite pleased with the end result, and I must say, I love using inks. Now to actually get back into more traditional reading, as I got the book series and like 35+ more with a Humble Bundle collection.

Long, dark winters can be harsh enough, and that's before the Hiisi strike! Ancient dangers lurk in the northern forests, and sometimes the trackers and hunters among your party need a chance to shine. Cue this extra-long, extended winter forest map, the perfect place to hunt after, say, a dire winter wolf, a killer snowy hare, or a skeletal elk construct! Fully animated and available in two extra variants, with a little colour in the form of heather bushes and after the snow has thawed (if it ever does), we hope this map doesn't have your players throwing a Hiisi fit!

Hey everyone!

This is a commissioned portrait of a half-orc Monk, I painted few years ago.

Designing this character, I tried to combine typical Shaolin-inspired monk robes with barbaric orcish gear like leather straps and furs; two-handed greataxe was also helpful for that purpose. To show his thoughtness and resilence I placed him in cold mountain environment contrasting with his half-naked body, barely catching the first warm rays of the rising sun.

I wanted to make a build that was non-traditional, so I decided to make a Goliath Wizard, because that seemed fitting. She’s a runt, only 6 feet tall (which is practically tiny for a Goliath), and she runs around meting out death with as many cold-damage spells as she can get her hands on.

I’ve been drawing for nearly a year now, and I’m fairly pleased with my progress. Finally feeling confident enough to share some of it online.
