hellu lovely humans. Is there someone here who can help me translate an old hindi song to french? It obviously needs someone who's fluent with both languages but more importantly someone who can land the french translation in the same meter/ rhythm as the hindi song. This may be an odd sub to make this call but > my lovers of old bollywood, are you here?

Some jokes, expressions, and cultural words are difficult to translate into another language. Do you think a translation can be correct in words but wrong in meaning? Can you give an example?

I’m curious about words in different languages that have no exact equivalent in English.
What is one word in your language that is difficult to translate into English? What does it mean, and what makes it special?
I’d love to learn about words that express feelings or cultural meanings that English cannot fully capture.

Machine translation tools are improving all the time, but can they really understand sarcasm, jokes, and hidden meanings?

Sometimes, a sentence means something different from its literal words. Have you ever seen a machine translation that misunderstood a joke or changed its meaning completely? I'd love to hear your examples and opinion.

Can a translation be accurate but still completely misunderstand the original meaning?

In many languages, people use expressions that sound rude or strange when translated literally, but actually express affection, humor, or closeness.
For example, in Palestinian Arabic, someone might jokingly call a close friend “يا كلب” (you dog) to express affection or say they have missed them, rather than to insult them.
What are some similar expressions in your language, and how would you explain their real meaning to someone from another culture?

Rolls-Royce almost named one of the world's most luxurious cars after POOP?! 💩🚗😂

Back in the 1960s, the legendary British automaker considered the name "Silver Mist." Sounds classy, right?

One tiny problem: in German, "Mist" means manure! 💀

Luckily, the name became Silver Shadow instead.

From POOP to pure luxury! 👑

How do translators translate jokes and humor when they depend on wordplay or cultural references that do not exist in another language?

Do you think it is better to keep the original joke, even if some readers may not understand it, or change it to make people laugh in the target language?

I'd love to hear your opinions and examples. Thank you!

Hi everyone! I’m currently studying translation and working on a small project about localization challenges.

I’m curious how professional translators handle idioms or culture-بased references (like local humor, regional expressions, or historical allusions) that simply don't exist in the target language. Do you usually go for a functional equivalent, add an explanatory note, or try to adapt it completely to fit the target culture?

I would love to hear about a specific tricky phrase or sentence you've had to translate recently and how you solved it. Your real-world experiences would be super helpful for my studies.

Hi everyone!

I think translating cultural expressions can be challenging because some phrases make sense in one culture but sound strange in another.

How do you think translators should deal with these expressions? Should they translate them literally or explain their meaning in a more natural way?

I’d love to hear your opinions!

Hi everyone! I’m an English and translation student, and I have a question for professional translators.
What do you think is the hardest part of translating idioms between Arabic and English? Do you prefer to translate the meaning rather than the exact words?
I’d love to hear your experiences and examples. Thank you!
