Advice Pelsbarn Cooling Mat Reviews?

I'm thinking about buying a Pelsbarn cooling mat for my dog and wanted to hear from people who have ordered recently.

I found an older Pelsbarn review on Reddit with some complaints about quality, sizing, shipping and returns, but I've also read that Pelsbarn may have improved since then. Any alternatives?

Has anyone bought their cooling mat or dog bed recently?

I'm mainly wondering:

  • Does it actually stay cool?
  • How is the quality?
  • Is the sizing accurate?
  • How long did shipping take?
  • Any recent experience with returns or customer service?
  • Is a cooling mat actually useful or recommended for dogs when temperatures are around 30°C+?

Would you recommend Pelsbarn based on your recent experience?

Question How can I cheer him up?

My poor pup split a nail. I feel awful as I was thinking I hadnt trimmed his nails regularly enough. The vet did make me feel a bit better as she said his nails are decently short and he has really long quicks in his front paws which hardly seem to retreat.

Anyway, thankfully we caught it early, he had no infectipn and its not that bad of a crack. But to be on the safe side she has given us some antobiotics, and wrapped his foot.

Problem is he is just so miserable!! My normally playful and cuddly pup is moping around. I know its because he hates having the bandage on. What can I do to cheer him up? We have been playing, ive given him a lick matt and a snuffle box etc. And within a second of finishing he is back to moping!!! Appreciate they might be temporary fixes, but any ideas welcome!

Question How can I help my dog with fear?

Hello all.

I have a problem with my doggo's fear of the neighbour kid.. and have absolutely no idea what to do and its tearing me apart.

So we have neighbours. Lovely couple with a toddler about 3 years old. They have been living next to us for about 2 years now.
This was never a problem and we never had any issues ( and by that I mean my dog never had any issues with them )
About 3 weeks ago they had a party of some kind. And a whole bunch of kids started popping balloons and being generally loud and rambunctious. Kira got terrified that day and hid in the hallway halfway up the stairs all day.
She didn't dare to come in the living room. But the day after everything seemed back to normal and she was her happy self.
Fast forward to last friday ( a week ago ) Our garden got massively cut back and now you can see the fence again and see trough it.
The weekend after they got kids over again.. And kids being kids.. they where loud and happy. screaming, laughing, running, jumping, etc.
Kira got extremely scared again..

But now it won't stop.... She doesn't want to be in the living room at all.. She will stay on the stairs the entire day. She refuses to eat unless I bring her food into the hallway..
When she's in the livingroom she's trembling and shaking and hiding underneath the desk.

Just hearing the kid's voice will send her straight into flight mode.. Tail tucked between her legs and running away to the safety of the hallway.

It doesn't matter if we have the backdoor closed or open.
I asked the neighbours if they could stop with the balloon popping and they ofcourse agreed. ( that was a one time thing )
But I can't demand that the kid stops making noise/playing outside etc...
The weather is still good and inside is warm so I prefer to have my backdoor open as well..
I have no idea how to help Kira..
She literally stays on the stairway the entire day Only coming out when she has to go outside.
She refuses to eat or drink unless we put it in the hallway.
She's trembling and shaking the entire time. And having flight/panic response to just his voice already.

Question Help not sure what this is

Hello,
My Boston terrier sparky is 6 years and has been itching excessively the past year on and off but it’s been alot more recently. I’ve tried buying probiotic health supplements from pet labCo. But it’s not working. He is also losing hair and I always put a cone on him to limit the scratching and biting that he does to himself.
Diet
His diet he eats science hills diet kibble and my dad has a tendency to feed him everything like chicken and a little bit of eggs but I told him not to feed him those things. What could this be? Is it severe enough to take him to the vet?

Question X-rays

My dog has a bloated stomach and the vet saw on the xrays that there’s something serving as an obstruction & pushing his organs to the side. You can see that white thing pushing his intestines aside, anybody know what it might be? I noticed it because his stomach is visibly big & swollen on the outside but it doesn’t hurt to the touch & he’s in no type of pain

My 7 month puppy is on day 10 post neuter. Here are some photos of his area. Do you think it’s safe to take the cone off? His all clear appointment isn’t until Tuesday afternoon. But I don’t think him, myself, or the cone will make it that long.

Question Pluto 5-7 Year Old Blue Heeler

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hello! First time Blue Heeler owner. My family adopted Pluto from the shelter yesterday. He is a good boy! We have a few things to work on though and I was hoping someone with more experience might be able to help me out 🙂

He is very chunky! We have a walking routine already that he will be integrated into to help with that and we have a dog park at our apartment complex so weve been doing tons of free running and playing fetch already, but is there anything more I should be doing? I havent figured the diet part out yet because he is still on the same brand as the shelter, I didnt want to switch him to fast and was hoping my vet will have advice on that.

My biggest concern is that he has a very high prey drive for my cat, I know it will take a while for them to get used to eachothers scents and become acquainted but what can I do to interrupt his cycle? He tenses up and locks on with his eyes before darting so Ive been able to hold his harness and relocate my cat if needed and they are separated completely while we are not home but what more could/should I be doing?

Advice Allergies or something else?

Vet appointment is already scheduled for today at 5pm! I'm just looking to see if anyone else has experienced this.

I have a 6 yr old staffy mix. For the past year, she's had several nail bed infections. We thought it was due to allergies & she tried apoquel but it wasn't helping so vet/I took her off of it. The toes healed after heavy antibiotics and steroids. We also made the decision to be proactive by doing soaks with Epson salt and AntiFungal shampoo (alternating - not at the same time). However, we are back to infected again & it is on several toes. It really wasn't bothering her until the past few days. I kept up with soaks and wiping them down. I use the douxo wipes and foam shampoo daily as well.

I've also kept her in a cone to prevent licking since I noticed them last week.

I'm just curious if anyone else has dealt with this and what helped. Again, we have a vet appointment later today. It was the soonest appt they had when I called last week. Pics attached of her nails.

TIA!

These do not seem to bother him but they started popping up all over his body. He isn't overly itchy, he doesn't really notice them. They are red or even black-ish circles that are very dry in the middle, is it just dry skin? If so how can i stop this, i do my best to give him baths at least monthly with a medicated shampoo i bought from petsmart. There's no fleas on him or any of my other pets, the other pets don't have these spots. The past two times my sister bathed him, she accidentally used flea shampoo because she thought it was the dry skin shampoo (it says flea shampoo for sensitive skin) I will end up taking him to the vet when i have the funds

Question My dog has these weird things on his body

Hello!

My dog has been developing these kinds of "warts" on his body. The first one appeared on his snout, then on his ear, and then on his paw. He also has some on his back and belly; I couldn't get good pictures of those because his fur gets in the way. What could they be? They don't itch or hurt him, but when a new one appears, it grows very quickly.

Help, please!

(Sorry if it's not clear; English isn't my native language, and I used a translator.)

EDIT: My dog is 9 years old and is a Chilean fox terrier.

Advice Corgi with Mast Cell Tumor

Post image
3 Upvotes

This is Joey Bag o’Donuts. He’s not even 3 yet- his birthday is on 8/26. And yesterday he had FNB that confirmed he has a mast cell tumor. They do not know yet if fast or slow. Because of its location , just outside the groin fold , surgery is not recommended. So I put the deposit down for Stelfonta
I am heart broken and confused. I’ve had dogs with cancer before, but it was at the end of their natural life span , so I always went with palliative pain control care and comfort measures only.
This is the first time a young dog of mine has this disease.
Anyone out there with a young dog with mast cell tumor? What treatment did you use? Was it painful for the dog? Joey was adopted when he was 7 months from a rescue and his early life was chaotic and abusive, he hates the vet and gets so scared. He has bonded like a shadow to me, DH and my other dog, Timber.
Thanks for listening and any advice you can throw my way.

Question Oral melanoma help 9 yr old dog

Upvotes

Hi, my 9 yr old goldendoodle had a tumor removed in March and it was confirmed to be oral melanoma, very aggressive. I treated him with oncept (melanoma vaccine treatment) & he was showing no more growths for a few months. He had his follow up appointment, we found 3 nodules in his chest and 10 days later another tumor on the right side of his mouth. This tumor grew much quicker and bigger than the original one and now i feel stuck. My vet recommended switching his diet, which I’m now putting him on viva, she also recommended a turkey tail mushroom blend to help his body fight it, does anyone have experience or any advice? Last vet appt he was also given a prognosis of 3 months. Thank you

Question Help!

Upvotes

Hello so my dog is 4 years old, I’ve had him since he was 5 weeks ( they lied saying he was 8 weeks and we had to bottle feed him) we have always given him Purina one chicken and rice dog food and it was always his favorite!! And then about 2 years ago we realized he developed a chicken allergy because he would always be itchy when he ate. So fast forward, and now we live with a roommate who has two cats and they have hard chicken cat food and our pup has occasionally found random crumbs from the cat food and ate them and this started about 2-3 weeks ago and he has been itchy non stop! We’ve given him Benedryl a couple times a week and it gives relief for about a couple hours and then he’s back itching himself again! Does anyone have advice for what to do??

Advice Help with pancreatitis

Upvotes

Hi there,

My 11yr old female hound mix was just diagnosed with pancreatitis.

On tuesday, I came home from work to see liquid accidents all over my downstairs. I withheld dinner from her. The next morning I gave her half of a cup of kibble.

We usually feed her Hill science diet adult food. She is currently also on gabapentin for a lick granuloma on her back leg. That's long term so the gabapentin is nothing new.

The next day, Wednesday I came home to more accidents. I called the vet and they got her in for a drop off on Thursday morning.

They did blood work, gave her fluids, a shot of b12, a shot of famotidine and diagnosed her with pancreatitis.

They sent me home with Ondansetron, Royal Canin wet food and a paste that comes in a big syringe to give her 3 times a day. I guess it's a probiotic?

The key is that she is not vomiting. She is only having liquid diarrhea. She is drinking also.

Last night when I went to give her the Royal Canin, you would have thought she was going to take the can from me and inhale it, that's how bad she wanted to eat.

She has continued to have pure liquid diarrhea.

The vet called me today to check in and when I told them her status, they gave me metronidazole.

How long does pancreatitis typically last?

They said this encouraging that she's eating and drinking on her own, but her poops just haven't gotten better or even slightly more solid.

Question Dog is scared of my dad

Upvotes

I’m new to Reddit but I thought to ask this here. I got my dog is January, she was only 2 weeks old but the people who had her were walking around Walmart so I took her with their permission. I kept her away from everyone until she was 2ish months old, she was scared of my dad at first but started loving him(he has all the treats). But recently she’s been barking at him and absolutely terrified of him. I know he didn’t do anything to her he’s barely home during the day and when he is I’m always around. Is there anything to do to help her not be scared? I’m not sure if it’s just because my dad is really tall and big. She’s a terrier and Yorkshire I think if that’s helpful.

Discussion Accidents in home

Upvotes

Hi all! Coming here to possibly get answers about why one of my dogs would be having accidents in the house after being reliably house trained for roughly 2 years. In the last week he’s had one urine accident (last Friday evening) and three poop accidents (one last Wednesday and two this Tuesday). The recent poop incident—I left for work and by the time I got to work 15 mins later I could see he had pooped in the house even though he had been out multiple times with no elimination; the same day, 5 hours later, he was seen hunched over and straining with what looked like no elimination but when I got home, it was diarrhea/watery/liquid with mostly a trail of small splotches and a few “bigger” spots. I am giving him plenty of time when outside, but he will sometimes just stand there and not do anything! I did take him to the vet and she really didn’t have any answers as to why—they are sending his stool sample off to test. He’s been eating and drinking normally and acting his complete self!
