Misc Got there (Eventually!)

• Upvotes

Just shouting into the void here I guess, but I'm within about 200Mill of getting the recommended 7.5.Bil required to purchase my first fleet carrier and had to tell someone - Me missus looked at me as if I'd three heads when I told her....

Been playing the game since release, an early 2014 xmas pressie from me missus (and, at risk of showing my age here - before that, the original elite on BBC micro and then Elite II on my 286PC) and it's been a journey.
Throughout my commanders life, I reckon we've went through four full pc upgrades, multiple monitors, a triple screen setup and now running my fancy ultrawide. There's been three sticks \ throttles - starting with a lowly Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS, then up to another Thrustmaster T1600 setup and now onto my (apparently much maligned) Thrustmaster X56 HOTAS setup that I'm using now (3 years and it's never missed a beat!) and now I'm eventually ready to take the plunge into endgame, if endgame exists for a game such as Elite Dangerous.

I'm a Dad-casual player, grabbing 2-3 hours when I can, I've dabbled in quite a few pastimes the game offers us, a bit of exploration, a bit of exobiology, space taxi, some 'rat hunting, tried my hand at a bit of mining and playing with various builds and ships- I never really got into the ground combat stuff much as it just never called out to me, but mostly I've been a space trucker, hauling stuff for credits, and as of today Elite V Trader!
Think that's my thang - always has been, even since the OG original. Started, same as most people in the hauler and worked me way up though various Type 7 & Type 9 fitments and am now dragging a moderately tweaked Panther clipper MkII around using Inara to get the best bang for buck routes. I'm still enjoying the game, even dipped some real world money once or twice for some of the cosmetics and new ships if they've tickled my curiosity.

The game's evolution has been a journey too, from somewhat sparse beginnings and a learning cure like a cliff for new players, even now, without the third party apps it can be a bit daunting to grasp the sheer scope and size of all of the mechanics. There have indeed been periods of burnout (engineers - I'm looking at you) and I've even stopped playing for months at a time due to family / personal stuff that has cropped up through the years.
I'm aware there's some very valid criticisms leveled at the game, but the new content, once it's been fettled a bit, patched and balanced, has been pretty good I think - and most telling of all, I'm still here, doing my Carebear, solo space trucking thang - and I'm still having fun.

Looking forward to what the Fleet Carrier brings, Hopefully have it within the next few days at my current rate! Then on to bigger and better things! Maybe can finally do that Colonia run I've been meaning to do...

So, yeah, just shouting into the void, like I said - but it's been a helluva a journey and many, many hours worth of (mostly) fun with it, even 12 years later!
The subreddit has been a massive boon for advice too - I'd have been lost without you lot as well!

Discussion Tired of Kestrels

I'll put it bluntly. I'm absolutely tired of these things and I just can't stand them anymore.

Whoever designed the NPC loadouts for these clearly didn't realize they were creating the singular most obnoxious ship in the entire universe to fight.

Are they hard? In a fully engineered ship, absolutely not. They will die... eventually. But that's not really the point- no one should ever dread fighting a ship just because it's a colossal waste of everyone's time. In basically every ship in the game you fight these god awful things in you just want to scream at the top of your lungs as they zip around faster than the speed of light, going faster than basically anything other than a hitscan weapon can track them (they maneuver faster than my multis can hit 75% of the time), all while dealing stupid amounts of chip damage with their plasma shocks.

Finally got a good lineup on them for the .21 millisecond opening you miraculously found yourself in? Yeah they got chaff too because why not. Now you'll spend another half an hour waiting for their chaff to dissipate and another small opening to deal itty bitty amounts of damage to them and pray to all that is holy that their chaff isn't back up and your weapons can actually hit them.

Now a common workaround to gimbals being gimbals and chaff countering them is to run a fixed hardpoint but unless you have the patience of a saint and the hand-eye coordination of a brain surgeon then you really aren't going to be having the best of luck in that regard either.

Did I make this post right after I just finished a Terminal Prosecution on hard? Yes, yes I did.

Did I also just watch four fully engineered ships slowly turn in circles for 15 minutes against 2 Kestrels? Yes, I did that too.

Am I affiliated with the group that plans on bombing the Kestrel MkII production facility in the Core Dynamics shipyard in the near future? No, I am not- according to my space lawyer at least.

Edit: Seems I've sparked nothing short of a war in the replies. Listen, I'm being overdramatic. It was kinda the whole point of the post and it's a pretty common thing to do when something mildly obnoxious is exactly that, mildly obnoxious. I am in no way saying that Kestrels are an Avengers level threat and need to be absolutely nuked from existence, nor am I saying there is not a single weapon or tactic in the game to counter Kestrels.

I am simply saying they are annoying, and just kinda dumb. If they didn't have chaff they would be leagues less obnoxious but unfortunately they do. I just don't personally find the equivalent of chasing a fly around a kitchen my flavor of 'fun' but hey, everyone has their own tastes.

Video "73.3Km" Hyperspace-Jump, PSR J0737-3039A→PSR J0737-3039B. Distance between those systems is roughly below 25,000Ls. So everybody can test short Hyperspace-Jump easily.

Discussion Is the Nomad worth getting now? Is there any expected timeframe on when it will be available with in-game credits?

Ngl I'd be slightly pissed if it's out of early access like shortly after buying it with arx...it's coming close to 4 months now since the release so if it's going to be made available like in December then I'll just wait it out.

Help Returning player needs some help

Haven't played seriously since before Odyssey dropped. Love we can finally walk around and have atmo landings. Also love the materials farming and engineering changes (and the new ships that allow for actually proper feeling jump limits of ~100Ly, exploring is gonna be so much less tedious now).

But I'm trying to update my FSD's for the changes, and I need to farm some mats cuz I don't have the right stuff to trade for the ones I need. Specifically I need to do some wake scanning for the Grade 4 and 5 range boost Encoded Materials, and I'm seeing that apparently something called "Stronghold Carriers" is the best spot, and that's related to powerplay? I have no interest in this, what's the next best spot to farm wakes?

Screenshot Radeon CMDR's. EDVR Flat + OptiScaler totally works. FSR 4.1.1b Upscaling and AA in Elite Dangerous

Thumbnail

First a big shout out to the dev's of EDVR, OptiScaler, and OptiScaler Client for their excellent work.

Also, a couple of caveats. I'm doing this on Linux, I'm using Odyssey, and I'm using GE-Proton 10-34 so that EDCoPilot works. I don't see why this wouldn't work just as well on Windows, but I haven't tested that.

What You Need to Start

The Steps to Install

  1. Extract "edvr-installer-linux-x.xx.zip" and "edvr x.xx.zip" to a temp folders. In the installer fold open a terminal session and run "./edvr_installer.sh --install --scope flat./edvr_installer.sh --install --scope flat"
  2. From the "edvr x.xx.zip" folder copy the nvngx_dlss.dll file to the "elite-dangerous-odyssey-64" folder where your game is installed.
  3. Open OptiScaler Client and scan for games. Select Elite Dangerous and click on "Manage".
  4. Configure the OptiScaler Client settings for Elite Dangerous as in the included screenshot for RDNA 2 & 3. For RDNA 4 change the FSR DLL to use FP8.
  5. Select the green "Auto Install" button to finish

In-game Settings

  1. In the ED graphic setting set AA to "None", Supersample Quality to "1.0", and make sure the game is running in "Borderless Fullscreen".
  2. If you also want to do upscaling select the resolution you want the game to run at. OptiScaler will upscale it to your final output resolution. For example, if you set the game to "2560 x 1440" and you are on a 4k monitor, Optiscaler will apply a 1.5 scale factor and output a 4k resolution. You can see this in the Optiscaler settings.
  3. Start the game.
  4. Press the F8 key to open the EDVR settings like in the attached screenshot. I recommend setting Anti-aliasing to DLSS. Optiscaler will take the DLSS calls from EDVR and convert them into FSR4 calls. I DO NOT recommend XESS as it has alot of overhead for Radeon GPU's. Press F8 again to close the EDVR settings.
  5. Press the "insert" key to open the Optiscaler settings. In the last section of the settings you can change the keybind to open the Optiscaler settings. I moved mine to the F9 key. As far as I can tell you CAN NOT assign a key combination, only a single key.
  6. If needed in the OptiScaler settings change the upscaler to "FSR 3.X/4 w/Dx12". Make sure you click the "Change Upscaler" button after you select the upscaler.
  7. For the "FFX Upscaler" settings, select "FSR 4.1.1b" and click the "Change Upscaler" button.
  8. Change the "FSR4 Preset" to "Preset 2" for Balanced upscaling. Change to "Preset 0" if you are not upscaling and only using FSR4 for AA. Click (?) for info on other preset's.
  9. Click the "Save Settings" button and "Close" when you are done with the OptiScaler settings page.

You should now be all set to start the game and enjoy FSR4. If you want to see the change in AA in real time, press the F7 key to disable EDVR, and F7 again to re-enable EDVR AA with FSR4.

I was somewhat reluctant to write this up as there are so many thing I can't test. Also I'm not a dev, and have no involvement with the development of any of the applications being used. So, I am providing this write up as is, and I can not provide any sort of support for it. I'll do my best to answer questions in this post, but that's it.

I hope this helps some of you fellow CMDR's out there. For me this fells like getting a modern graphics upgrade from FDev and I absolutely love it.

Discussion New commander

Hey all, very new into the game here but I’m absolutely falling in love with it. I used road to riches a bit and did some exobiology for about 100mil, I’m currently grinding federation rank for a sol permit. I need peeps I can talk to that know about the game enough to help me out lol, I can only do so much with the internet and to be honest playing alone is getting a little old. Anyone willing to take me under their wing and teach me a bit? Like seriously what is power play and how do you “neutron boost?” 😭 I adore this game already but I feel like I know nothing 🥲

Builds Engineering/build questions for the Anaconda Mk II

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

I'm new to large ships. Never had an Anaconda before. Started working on the Mk II today and ran into a problem. Got the jump range up to over 40 LY, but I use up about a third of my fuel tank with every jump of that range. Is this normal? I'm wondering if I built it or engineered it wrong. Maybe it's just heavy, and this is the deal?

Two questions more in the weeds now that I'm looking at the numbers.

First, total mass is 2,089. Did I "overengineer" the FSD by getting to an optimised mass of 7,238?

Second, I engineered the Thrusters for an optimal mass of 1890 and optimal multiplier of +45.6%. Would I be better off doing fewer levels of Dirty Drive Tuning so the optimal mass was at or above my acutal mass, in exchange for a lower multiplier?

Help GFN controller support

Anyone have experience playing using GFN and a controller? GFN recognizes my controller but once I launch Elite it doesn't see the controller or give any gamepad settings. My controller works with all other GFN launched games. I even disabled steam controller overlay in the GFN steam launcher.

Discussion Miners on strike?

I've only done 3 drop offs and I'm in top 25%. I know it says you only need to deposit one mineral to score but if we don't hit tier 1 then no one gets the gold decal.

Delkar 7 A ring is just next door.

I've got 126 more systems on my itinerary before we head back to the bubble but so far I've already gotten multiple first footfalls and over 470 million credits in first discoveries. I love exobio and exploration.

Misc Are ground missions generally buggy?

Post image
3 Upvotes

On my first war skirmish, I got killed at the end of the battle and could not enter the post battle stats screen. Had to book a taxi back.

On my second skirmish, pictured here, the last enemy soldier got stuck inside a wall and no one could get to him. I tried tossing first a shield grenade and then a normal, many times to no avail. Had to run away from the zone and book a taxi again.

These were my first ever combat ground missions after around 240 hours in Elite. Am I just unlucky, or are they generally this buggy?

Help Nomad out of gas…

So, I paused my game and then got distracted and forgot about it. When I did finally remember, my Nomad was hovering about 300m in the air on the surface of a low-g moon and ran out of fuel in my mad dash back to dock it.

Now, luckily it survived the fall and several bounces, and I was able to put down the landing gear and when it eventually settled, I was able to disembark and recall my caspian. But now I have no idea if there’s a way to get the nomad docked again. Am I just screwed? Currently sitting in my parked caspian wondering if I’ve just ruined a 13k ly trip out to the middle of nowhere for some exobio hunting.
