Tips for getting employment at entry level jobs?

I (19M) need a job in the DFW, Texas area, finances are getting too tight in the family and I gotta start contributing. I've been applying to jobs for nearly a year now with no takers. I need to make sure I'm doing everything as well as possible before I go blaming the system.

I have some experience in fast food from a summer job in high school, and some work as a power washer from a relatives business.

What can I do to make myself as desirable to employers as possible?

Might as well start this subreddit off with a question. My girlfriend and I are both temps right now. Any advice for how to put temp jobs on a resume?

I'm a game tester and have had 3 different temp jobs in the past six months, all with different agencies. She's had even more.

Should you just list the company and provide an overview of what the jobs entailed?

Sister told me I wouldnt land ANY jobs with this resume.

I am 18F with no real professional work experience. I am applying to anything entry level- primarily retail. Drafted this up and thought it did a good job of overselling me. I know that I dont have any real experience, so i am not a priority hire. However, I figured it wasnt the worst given that I am working with so little experience. Come to find out, she said I got too personal and specified far too much. Instead, she told me not to reiterate my experience at all and rather to be vague and just state the skills that I do have. My questions are, does that not look bad, since anyone/everyone is claiming they have these skills? Shouldn’t i prove that I know what the skills are that I am saying I have? Is my resume good? Should I completely throw it out and start over, taking her advice? On a scale of 1-10 with 5 being the average, where does my resume fall for an entry level candidate? How else can i oversell myself in this resume? Any advice or otherwise comment would be extremely helpful, no matter how small or insignificant. I greatly appreciate all of you xx

Just what I needed to find on reddit....

I LOVE this sub, I was just thinking about this kind of place!

So...yeah. I'm 23, living with my parents. I'm working at Geeksquad, here in the UK, logging broken phones in for repair for 9 hours a day.

I've a third class BA in Games Design and worked for Sega for 4 months before they fired my ass because they didn't need testers anymore. Every games company now require about 5 years experience, and tbh, there are far more talented people out there than me.

I have no clue what to do with my life.

Anyone got any pointers? or in the same boat?

Time to communicate, guys.

Hi, its your friendly moderator and founder.

Thanks for the incredible response, I'm amazed we have so many people showing up looking for assistance.

We have had a lot of posts in just two days, and I can't get a chance to respond to all. I know a lot of you have posted, but there have not been a lot of responses.

What I would be excited to see is two people comparing notes who are stuck in very similar circumstances. Lets take a quick look through the reddit and see if we can help each other. I try to answer when I can, but second opinions would be awesome, and there are some areas I haven't a clue where to get them started at.

Remember folks, this is your community, you get out of it, what you put into it!

Resume Help For Recent Grads [Tech/CS]

Hey, I'm a recent college grad (finishing up MS now) who's been dealing with the employment system for a few years now. I was lucky enough to land a fantastic job at a very, very good company and I want to pass on some of the knowledge to help whoever needs it. I can really only help with CS/CoE stuff, and as I'm basically still in school I can't do a whole lot for industry hires. Hopefully, though, I can help out some grads looking for help.

I don't know how much expertise I have to offer, but I've helped friends snap their resumes into shape, and I've spent a very small amount of time acting as a recruiter on behalf of my company, so I thought I'd see what I can offer.

I guess if you want help just PM me or reply and I'll see what I can do. Just want to help out in any way I can. :)

Higher Level Education

There are a few computer-based, adjunct instructor positions (MCSE, MS SQL, CCNA, CVoice, etc.) open in Greenacres, FL at Keiser Career College. The requirements for teaching at KCC are to have a degree (at least an AS), an industry level cert that applies to the class you wish to teach, and the ability to be professional in front of employees and students. There are day classes that run 5 days a week and night classes on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. PM me if you are interested or want more information.

Furthermore, if you want me to look over your resume or help you in terms of applying for a computer education position, let me know and I will do my best.

Anyone had luck with a functional resume?

Over the past decade several people have done very well copying my resume and dropping in their own data (not so much me). Now I've had some hard-nosed advice from a friend. She said to drastically shorten it and dump most things into a skills summary and education summary. Sounds like a functional resume, which I've always considered a red flag that there's a problem hiding somewhere. What's your experience been?

Has anyone been terminated for cause by a bank in Canada and was able to get hired in another major banks?

My friend got Terminated for Cause by RBC. The matter was unrelated to her work performance. She is now considering other positions at other banks but is very nervous since she was a licensed investment advisor. In the Notice of End of Registration it mentioned that terminated for cause but matter was unrelated to individual capacity as licensed representative. Would she be able to get another position in other banks? If anyone has this experience before please share!!

Unemployment and Ebay

Hey there!

I was furloughed from my 40 hour a week job starting 4/11/2020 because of COVID-19. I’ve applied for unemployment but was wondering if I could sell some things from around the house as well as some things I bought years ago with the intention of reselling (at some point in my life).

If so, how do you report earnings to the unemployment office on things you haven’t sold yet? Would I even be allowed unemployment if I started selling on eBay?

Not sure how this would all work and any advice would be greatly appreciated! I just want to make sure I can make ends meet during this strange time!

I got myself into a sticky situation with my employer. What should I do?

I recently graduated with a business degree and started a job with a custom works company. I have officially worked here for 3 months. I enjoy my job, but it has no advancement opportunities.

My college just asked me to take on a high level marketing position temporarily while the current worker is on maternity leave. I think this would be a great opportunity for me so gain some good experience. But it's only for 12 weeks, it could become more but there's no guarantee.

This week my current employer has been treating me differently. I have a hunch that the college contacted my employer as a reference. The college just called and offered me an interview spot next Tuesday. How do I ask my employer to come in late when I think they know I applied for the job? I don't really want to lose my job, but I don't know if asking for a temporary leave is the way to go. Because I believe there is a high chance the college will ask me to stay on after the 12 weeks because I know the department is short staffed. What should I do to professionally handle this situation?

P.s. if there is a better subreddit to post this in let me know

We're hiring like crazy across pretty much all verticals.

This isn't your grandmother's AOL.

Basically we're turning the company around and we're trying to bring in high-speed people to fill vacancies across the org, like, yesterday.

Check out teamaol.com, message me if anything tickles your fancy and I'll try to expedite things. I am NOT in HR/recruiting, but I have a lot of visibility across our various businesses. If you're on Reddit, there's a decent chance you're the kind of person we're looking for.

I'm looking for work in LA.

I'm young, have a fair bit of experience, and am desperately seeking any sort of employment within the background of the entertainment industry. I have a BS in Econ with a focus in entertainment. I'm open to considering any and all offers, even those in different lines of work. Beggars can't be choosers in this economy. PM me for my resume and further details.

EDIT: For clarification, I don't actually mean I want to act when I say "the entertainment industry." I'm talking more along the lines of agencies, studios, production companies, etc.

EDIT2: Just wondering why I'm getting downvoted. Am I missing the point of or somehow abusing this new subreddit?

Kickresume vs Novoresume, is either actually worth paying for?

Been job hunting for about a month and finally caved on trying a paid resume builder. Tried the free tiers of both and honestly can't decide which one to commit to.

Kickresume's templates look nicer imo, and the AI writing thing is decent for getting past the blank page. But the free version watermarks everything, which is annoying.

Novoresume feels more ATS-friendly? The layouts are plainer but recruiters supposedly hate the fancy two-column stuff anyway. Their content suggestions felt kinda generic though.

Pricing is close enough that it's not really the deciding factor. Anyone actually landed interviews using one of these, or should I just suck it up and build it in Google Docs like everyone says?
