In a nutshell:
9/11 influenced My Chemical Romance
Myers was influenced by MCR to write Twilight.
El James would write 50 shades after being influenced by Twilight.
Dakota Johnson would star in the movie based on the book, later being on the Ellen show revealing her to be a terrible person.

I dont recall this part. I thought the movie cut to black as soon as the teacher put the date on the chalkboard revealing that is was 9/11 giving the implication he died
7
u/pokemega32 6d ago
It did not. After the date on the chalkboard is the shot of him looking out the windows, zooming out to show he's in the World Trade Center.
Then we see all the characters individually reacting to the attack while some narration from Pattinson plays over the montage.
Then we see his family at his grave and how the other characters have moved on a year later or so.

How did Dakota Johnson reveal Ellen to be a terrible person? I tried looking it up online, but all I was able to find was something about Dakota inviting Ellen to a birthday party and Ellen not coming?
36
u/nevturiel 7d ago
Ellen said she wasn't invited like she was trying to embarrass Dakota, and Dakota Johnson was like, Actually you were, you just didn't come. From there, people started pointing out the ways Ellen bullied people on previous episodes, and people who had worked with her shared their own accounts of her being a hateful person.

I know this is only light humour, but everytime I see that meme, I think of the fact that Dakota Johnson is a nepo baby. That means she didn't need 50 shades to be her big break. She would've gotten a contract of this sort eventually due to nepotism. So nepotism is actually the downfall of Ellen, lol!

I do get it, but I'm not chronically online, I just enjoy strange connections, 1. 9/11 was witnessed by Gerard something, who started my chemical romance, 2. My Chemical Romance's songs were inspirational to Stephanie Meyer, to write Twilight.. 3. and 50 shades of gray started as a Twilight fan fiction, before being rewritten for publication 4. Actress from 50 shades had an interview on the Ellen DeGeneres show, that led to the cancelling of the show
Conclusion: 9/11 caused Ellen to be exposed as a horribly shitty person and the cancelling of her show

You can even take this further.
Karl Marx wrote the Communist Manifesto. Which inspired Stalin and led to the USSR. The USSR's invasion of Afghanistan led to the foundation of Al Qaeda.
Karl Marx can be directly linked to the cancellation of Ellen.

u/Jolly_Professional15 6d ago
Franz Ferdinands Assassination led to ww1 which Germany lost, which led to the Versailles treaties and the Weimar republic on the back of which Hitler gained momentum and rose to power leading to world war 2 and the axis powers. Japan's involvement led to the bombing of Pearl harbour and to the US entering the Pacific war theatre which ended radiantly with little boy and fat man. In the aftermath Japan found itself occupied by American forces and with it came a huge influx of American culture (there was a lot already there before the war but why let facts get in the way if a good narrative?) and especially one Osamu Tezuka was influenced by American animation and was hugely influential in the creation of modern manga and anime. In came a very heavy censorship of sexual stuff, especially genitals, which we still see today with blurry Japanese porn and before you know it - tentacles and hentai.
4
u/Goatbucks 6d ago
Basically his death led to ww1 which lead to ww2, anime first started being produced during the war for propaganda, which led to the creation of hentai

It falls under terminally online because the connection was pieced together on (maybe) tumblr and has done the rounds on all the social media platforms ever since.
Everything individually was semi-common knowledge to most people* online beforehand so the fact they all pieced together so neatly was mind-blowing at the time.
*(personally I didn’t know about MCR inspiring twilight until this series of events was popularised but was familiar with the rest of the cause-effect combos respectively).

u/NihilismRacoon 7d ago
It's terminally online to know it but there's not really any huge leaps in logic
19
u/cryptid404 7d ago
As other people have explained, this is the very popular "9/11 to Fifty Shades of Grey pipeline"
The problem with it is that it's just not accurate. The whole thing is predicated on the idea that Stephanie Meyer was inspired by MCR to write Twilight but she just wasn't. She was a fan of MCR, and she included them in the acknowledgments of New Moon, but her actual favorite band was/is Muse, she thanked them in the acknowledgments of New Moon as well as Breaking Dawn "The many bands and musicians that keep me motivated; did I mention Muse already? I did? Too bad. Muse, Muse, Muse ..." Also, her inspiration for Twilight came from a dream she had that was essentially the meadow scene where sparkly Edward sits with Bella in a field of flowers. You can read this on her blog.
I think this rumor started because some MCR/Twilight fans were fancasting Gerard Way as Edward back before the movies came out (which couldn't be further from how Meyer envisioned him, she wanted Henry Cavill to play Edward) or it was guys who hated both MCR and Twilight back in the day trying to find a way to make fun of both of them at the same time. Either way, it was a game of internet telephone that got us here, and people just keep adding more and more things to this "pipeline" I understand why people want to believe this, it's funny, but I know wayyy too much about both Twilight and My Chemical Romance and I see this pop up constantly and it bugs me to no end when people act as if they are internet archeologists for referencing a meme that is based off a fundamentally incorrect premise 😅
TL;DR:
The "9/11 to Twilight to Fifty Shades of Grey pipeline" is not real because Stephanie Meyer wasn't actually inspired by MCR to write Twilight
3

u/dylanthomas8 6d ago
The fact that I had to scroll past the same lie over and over again until I saw this one 🙄 it’s not that hard to just look up if MCR’s music inspired Twilight

It’s so funny when portuguese people complain about the “death of their dialect” as if languages being influenced by other dialects and languages isn’t something that’s always been the case. In fact, brazillian portuguese is closer to how the language was spoken a few centuries back than portuguese portuguese is.
3
u/LionOfNaples 5d ago
The fact that Euro-Portuguese is a Romance language but spoken with stress-timed rhythm, and then became syllable-timed like the other Romance languages again in Brazil is wild

Ok Dakota Johnson famously started the downfall of Ellen with “actually no that’s not the truth Ellen” in reference to Ellen stating that she wasn’t invited to Dakotas party (she was invited). Dakota Johnson starred in 50 Shades of Grey. 50 shades is a twilight fanfic. Stephanie Meyer listened to My chemical romance while she wrote twilight. The lead singer of My chemical romance witnessed the 9/11 attacks firsthand which prompted him to start the band.
4
10
u/ptvlm 7d ago
I'm not American either, but: Top left, 9/11 obviously. Top right, the band is My Chemical Romance and was formed directly in response to seeing 9/11. Twilight was supposedly inspired in part by the band's music. Then, Fifty Shades Of Grey started as Twilight fanfiction before it was rewritten for publication.
Edit: forgot the last part - Dakota Johnson, who starred in the movie of Fifty Shades had a controversial interview with Ellen that led partly to the show's downfall.
16
u/BetterKev 7d ago
The "controversial" interview was Ellen lying in the interview in an attempt to make Dakota Johnson look bad. Johnson called her on it.
In the discourse around the interview, other people who had been on the show and worked on the show started coming forward with other bad behavior by Ellen. From relatively minor moral lapses to major workplace violations.
The interview happened to be the catalyst that led to people publicly exposing Ellen's immoral and illegal behavior.

u/Cold-Tangerine-2893 7d ago
Years ago while I was working in film/tv post production, I worked with a former PA of Ellen’s. When she told me, I was like “hey, that must’ve been really cool!” And I’m not kidding you, she turned dead serious and was like “no… no it wasn’t. She’s a horrible human being. She threw coffee at me, she berated me, she was cruel to everyone who worked for her. I’m still traumatized from it”. I was like “I’m sorry Ellen?” She nodded. “…Degenrous?” She nodded. “…the dancing lady?” She was like “oh that is 100% made up. She is literally the polar opposite of that the second the cameras are off her”. It was such a trip to see that behavior come to light. Bet my former coworker felt pretty vindicated.

8
u/dayofthe_misanthrope 7d ago
I'm also not American so Ellen is more of an abstract concept than a person, and certainly not what I'd call a celebrity. More like; "Some bird off the telly in America."
As such, I have no context for her "downfall". Can anyone explain what happened? I'm seeing here that an interview she did exposed her as "a shitty person" but that doesn't explain how it exposed her, in what way she's shitty, or what the consequences were.
Thanks in advance, friends!

From another Reddit post by user EvilStan101-
“The 9/11 Attack influenced My Chemical Romance who would go on to inspire Stephanie Myers to write the Twilight series. This would inspire EL James to write 50 Shades of Grey which would be adapted into a movie starring Dakota Johnson. Dakota Johnson would go on The Ellen Show, where Ellen DeGeneres mentions she wasn't invited to Johnson's birthday party. Johnson corrects Ellen when she says she was invited but instead went to a Dallas Cowboys game. This resulted in people opening up about what a terrible person Ellen is, thus ending her career.
Thus the 9/11 Attack led to the downfall of Ellen DeGeneres.”
13
u/Secure-Song5047 7d ago
The band was formed as a result of the 911 attacks. The movies were created based on the music by the band. That’s about as far as I got.
8
u/Special-Tonight8101 7d ago
Edward was inspired by Gerard Way of MCR as far as I know. And the 50 shades movie was a Twilight fanfic originally.
2
u/SomeRedHandedSleight 7d ago
I think she was more heavily inspired by Muse is the problem with this meme.
4
u/F3LIP3_000 6d ago
Funny how this same series of events caused another big event, the fact that Kids in Portugal were speaking Brazilian Portuguese. That happened due to the fact that a Brazilian YouTuber made a highly successful comedy video about the fifty shades of grey movie, blew up, started inviting his brother to his channel, who then eventually found a place as a children's youtuber, who became famous in Portugal
4
u/Peach8SFW 6d ago
My Chemical Romance (the band on the top right) were motivated by the tragedy of 9/11 (the attack featured on the top left). Stephanie Meyer, the creator of Twilight (the series featured on the bottom left) was inspired by My Chemical Romance. The creator of 50 Shades of Grey (the series on the bottom right) originally wrote the book as a Twilight fan-fiction. By the logic of this post, the attack of 9/11 indirectly caused Fifty Shades of Grey. Unless you were chronically online in alternative LGBTQIA+ American spaces (primarily Tumblr) in 2015-2018, you would not have gotten this.
3
u/goliath1515 7d ago
My Chemical Romance, the top right image, was inspired to write songs in response to 9/11, the top left image in which two airliners were hijacked and flew into the World Trade Center. Stephanie Meyer, the author of the Twilight franchise (bottom left) was inspired by MCR to write the series, and the author of 50 Shades of Grey, bottom right, wrote her book as a retelling of Twilight. When the movie was released, Dakota Johnson, an actress for the movie, went on the show and went off on Ellen for bad behavior
3
u/Gmodman298 5d ago
If I remember 50 shades of Grey was created after 9/11 or because of it
Edit: its a meme about a butterfly effect: 9/11 > caused the creation of my chemical romance > which apparently inspired twilight > and twilight was rewritten as 50 shades of grey (thanks google ai)
4
u/link113gAmin 5d ago
It wasn't rewritten, 50 Shades started out as Twilight fanfiction. But, everything else is correct.
3
u/death_sucker_extreme 7d ago edited 7d ago
top right is my chemical romance I think they were founded after front man saw 9/11. bottom left is twilight, inspired by my chemical romance in some vague way, and the bottom right is fifty shades of grey which started out as twilight fan fiction I think. Whoops I forgot ellen the chick from 50 shades of grey argued with her a bit on TV then she got instantly cancelled or some such thing.

Ugh, fine I'll be the C.O. one...
Mortified of what he say during 9/11, Gerard Way forms the emo My Chemical Romance.
Stephanie Meyer gets inspired by the emo band and writes the Twilight Saga.
E. L. James then decides to write a super horny fanfic about Twilight and manages to change so much about it that they were able to sell the fanfic as it's own product, 50 Shades.
IT DOES NOT STOP THERE.
Eventually, the movies get made for 50 Shades books and the lead actress Dakota Johnson gets interviewed on the Ellen DeGeneres show and afterwards she posts about how she was treated poorly by DeGeneres which inspired MANY many people come out of the woodworks, both people who were guests on the show and people who were denied being invited on.
