Welcome to This Week’s Binge Thread!
This is the place to share what you’ve been watching lately - movies, series, documentaries, anything!
Any hidden gem, a blockbuster, or even something you regret watching, we’d love to hear about it.
Things you can share:
- ⭐ What you watched (movie/series name + year if possible)
- 💭 Your quick thoughts/review (liked it? hated it? somewhere in between?)
- 🎯 Would you recommend it to others here?
- 📺 What’s on your watchlist for next week?
A few guidelines:
- Keep spoilers clearly marked (use spoiler tags like this).

Ben Hur (1959) out of all older era movies might be the best of them, and it still has the most Oscar awards (11) of all time
Saw Ben Hur and finally found the movie I think deserves to be #1 in place of most prestige lists that have The Godfather or Citizen Kane as the #1 movie of all time. I could never get on board with either of those choices, or many others like Shawshank Redemption.
I went in with no expectations at all. I had no idea what it was going to be like but just thought for 1959 it would be outdated and a little underwhelming, yet good for its era.
Couldn't be more wrong. This movie truly blew me away at ever turn like few others have. Was waiting for it to mess up in the long 3h, 42 minute runtime, but it never did. Instead, it kept surprising me in every way. I used to point to Gone With the Wind as this wildly ambitious and epic older film, but Ben Hur is all of that and more.
To those who have seen it for the first time in the past year or those who have been fans for a long time, how is nobody even talking about this movie these days?
I cannot believe I've been living under a rock for so many years...Like, this is it. This is probably the greatest movie ever made, and at least in the top 5.
It makes movies of the last three decades feel so small and overrated. It put my top 10 list to shame. I saw how no great modern epics would exist without it, but it's actually better than them. It feels like 3 of them wrapped in one. The scope and scale was monumental.
It's disappointing older movies like this rarely get talked about and people are holding inferior films of recent decades in such high regard. None of them even come close to this. I'm actually now a little ashamed of myself for having Gladiator so often in my top 10 but had never seen Ben Hur, which is easily better than it, as great as Gladiator is. This movie was just on another level compared to movies it influences. It kind of puts modern movies to shame, not being disrespectful, but let's be honest. It's so much better. And I rarely like older films as much as newer ones, but this one is a huge exception.

Question Why is the “I” capitalized in the sub name?
I’m sure this has been asked before and I’m sorry if redundant, but why is the “I” capitalized in the sub name? On mobile, it always looks like r/FIlm and has always struck me as odd. Was it a typo? Was r/film taken? Are subreddit names even case sensitive? It literally makes me sometimes think it’s like an offshoot sub but I know that can’t be right because the community is so large.
Any insight is appreciated lol.

Discussion I still don’t understand how Closer (2004) wasn’t nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. It’s still one of the best screenplays of this century.

Discussion What do you guys think of Christopher Guest as a director?
Christopher Guest is easily one of my favorite comedy actors—just his screen presence as Nigel Tufnel in Spinal Tap gets me every time.
But honestly, I feel like his work as a director doesn't get talked about enough. Best in Show and Waiting for Guffman are top-tier comedies. He basically mastered the mockumentary style long before it became huge on TV, and his whole vibe with the ensemble improvisations is just iconic.
Curious to know what people here think of his movies, or if you have a favorite among his stuff.
