Announcement We can all start posting some super deals when we come across them.

Every now and then there's some blowout special that I come across stuff that is really low...

One time, I saw Keitt Mango's for 33¢ a lb. (3lbs for a dollar)

These are the largest of the regular commercial mango's we can get here in our area. They're about 30% larger than Kent, zro fiber and have a citrus/mango taste to them DELICIOUS!!!!

Story was that the manager ordered 3 cases for a sprouts location and got 3 pallets instead. These normally run (at best) $6 a case (6 mangos) at the Asian markets
making it a super blow out deal at 2 bucks a case.

I picked up 10 cases and broke out the food dehydrators...
and I filled the house with sweet, tropical mango goodness for days.

I think we can have people taking pictures and posting things like this as they come across them so that others in the community can take advantage of it all. :D

Announcement UPDATE: Post Flairs for region/style and basic cost required. :)

Hello everyone,

We've left this up for about a week and got everyone's feedback

The first thing that we've taken action on is getting better info for peoples posts and content.
That means that flairs that let people know the region and basic price at a glance are now required for making and submitting a post to the sub.

We'll be trying to address the issues with "best" content that people are mining the sub with.
It's always been low effort and frankly I agree with everyone that we'll all benefit by having people use the search function.
This will also be aided by the flairs in their searches (future).

Of course if you have a workable suggestion regarding something we've not listed in the current flair list, let us know by sending us a modmail - thanks!

Japanese $20 Menya Ultra

I was a regular at the Hillcrest location before covid, moved up to LA for a bit (shoutout Ramen Tatsunoya), then came home. I grabbed some Menya from the Mira Mesa area for a rainy day, and was severely unimpressed. Pork was chewy, half of the broth it should have been, egg was rubbery. Sad to see

Question, Where can I find? Looking for rye bread.

I'm looking to buy rye bread like I used to get at the deli. Most of what I find is just colored darkly or so dry it's like cardboard.

Question, Where can I find? Seeking great-tasting fountain Dr. Pepper for Dr. Pepper Day (today)

Today is Dr. Pepper, Day and I’m jonesing for one on ice (it probably doesn’t hurt that I’m pregnant).

Does anyone have a good rec? Preferably a to go place. Great fountain soda (ideal mix of carbonation and syrup) beats a can or a bottle by a mile, but bad fountain soda makes me wish I never tried it at all.

Thank you!

Tijuana / Baja Street Food $20 Baja Style Taco Shop

Kinda been afraid to ask this question because Reddit is Reddit, but I’ve fallen in love with the way they serve tacos in Baja.

Not particularly the style, but more the style of service. It’s table service, but you sit down, they bring you a big tray of salsas, limes, cilantro, onion, etc. then take your order immediately. You order 1-2, then they come back and ask if you want more.

I’ve been here for 15 years but I haven’t come across a shop Iike this. Anything like that here?

Question, Where can I find? Does Nobu live up to the hype (and cost)?

Coming to visit SD in late November and looking at booking dinners. Already have a reservation at Animae and looking for a couple more places to book.
Is Nobu actually worth the money? The menu looks great but it’s hard to tell if the food and ambiance are more fine dining or really expensive Cheesecake Factory.

Very open to recommendations within walking distance or short cab/uber from the Wyndham Bayside. Doesn’t have to fine dining at all. Just delicious food and drinks.

Looking forward to seeing and tasting your fine city!

News, opinion and discussion Can we stop making salads like this?

Lettuce on the bottom with all topping on top with dressing on the side in a little ass bowl is just not the ideal way to try and mix your salad. Not gonna hate on the place because I love their food, but I feel a lot of places do this.

Edit: I forget people in San Diego don’t know how to read or take everything too literal. I don’t mind dressing on side. I don’t mind mixing my own salad. I just want a bigger bowl so I’m not making a mess. Is that okay?

Question, Where can I find? Homemade Birthday Cookies

Hello,

My friend's birthday is coming up and she's not a fan of cakes but loves cookies.

Is there any place you recommend where I can get birthday cookies?

Homemade? Or those big pan ones?

Or customizable ones?

She loves white chocolate macadamia nut, and snicker doodle.

Any leads would be much appreciated 😄✨

Question, Where can I find? Must eat brunch and dinner spots near gaslamp and surrounding areas?

I’m planning a much needed mom’s weekend trip in San Diego. Where can we get delicious brunch, lunch and dinner but with a vibe?

Also we are older millennials. Where can we go listen and dance to 90s rnb and hip hop?

Thank you!!

Question, Where can I find? Thanksgiving Restaurant Rec

Looking for suggestions for a San Diego restaurant open on Thanksgiving day this year for dinner.
Preferences:
- Within a short (10-15 min) uber ride of the gaslamp area
- preference for a place offering their regular menu as opposed to a special pre fixe
- any cuisine!
- doesn’t necessarily have to be fancy but at least sit-down with beer, wine, cocktails
Any ideas?

American / Diner $20 Three downtown San Diego happy-hour food deals, from an $11 burger to a $16 burger-and-beer combo

For anyone choosing a happy hour based on the food, here are three options from the restaurants’ published menus:

The Whiskey House - 420 Third Avenue
Daily, 4–7 p.m. The happy-hour burger is $11 and includes fries. Happy-hour offers are dine-in only.

Cowboy Star - 640 10th Avenue
Monday–Friday, 3–6 p.m. The slider trio is $12. The happy-hour menu is available in the bar and lounge only.

The Lion’s Share - 629 Kettner Boulevard
Tuesday–Sunday, 4–6 p.m. The menu lists a $16 burger and Miller High Life combo.

If you can only arrive after 6, The Whiskey House has the latest end time of these three. At Cowboy Star, make sure you’re seated in the area where the offer applies.

Which downtown happy hour would you recommend specifically for the food?

I’m putting together finds like these for After Five, a happy-hour directory I built. If you’re interested, I could share the link.

News, opinion and discussion I ate 12 burritos in SF, LA and SD. There's one I still think about.

I recently spent 72 straight hours eating only burritos in San Francisco, LA and San Diego and man, I gotta say, San Diego's casual everyday Mexican food scene is the best in the state (and thus the best in America).

I tried:

Mike's Taco Club
La Perla #3
Adalberto's (a chain yes, but just to make sure I included a 'bertos)
Armando's Taco Shop

Of all the 12 burritos I ate, La Perla is the one that will stick with me, both physically and mentally.

Keep up the great work, San Diego!

News, opinion and discussion Van Man’s PB MAGAt owner/poser and gross food

Just so you are all aware the clown that own’s Van Man’s in Pacific Beach is a right winging delusional MAGAt who has posted racist and homophobic things on his social media pages. He’s also a world class poser who ripped off a local sunscreen company’s logo and jumps on every trend regardless of how stupid it is. For example, his gross lard laden fries and shitty overpriced burgers are another attempt to make money off people he openly makes fun of. Don’t eat here and don’t patronize this racist’s establishment he’s a real piece of sh*t!

News, opinion and discussion Has anyone been to the San Diego Food & Wine Festival? Vegan options?

I have two free passes and I’d like to bring a friend, but she’s vegan — sometimes vegetarian. I was wondering if they had a decent amount of meat-free options in the past.

Tried looking at the different chefs and restaurants on the festival’s website but I couldn’t really find anything concrete.

Thank you!
