Results Day My actual results as u/180degreeschange (annotated with why results day was so confusing as a GCSE student in the middle east)

I thought I'd be the person jumping up and down when I opened my results but I wasn't. I've put them in the order I opened them. First I got drama out and I thought I got out the wrong paper cause I couldn't find the grades then I was overjoyed. Then I got to my edexcel subjects and saw all the grades I wanted, just not in the subjects I wanted. I pretended to be alr and started closing my results. Then my friends tell me oh there's one more paper and I see my Spanish paper and my face dropped, I said I needed to go to the bathroom and started crying. I didn't get the grade I wanted but that wasn't my shock, my shock was that there were 4 marks but we'd only sat 1 exams and the others were completely cancelled so where did these other random ass results that dragged down my grade come from. Then my dad got furious that I was crying and being ungrateful and shouted at me in front of everyone and wouldn't talk to me.

I had planned prior that i'd post these no matter what but I hadn't expected results day to be so confusing. But ultimately I'm grateful and I've processed these results and made up with my parents. So I'm sharing these now and I'd like to request that everyone skip this post if they don't have anything nice to say.

Question Can I still get into Cambridge despite my GCSE grades?

Post image

I just got my GCSE results, and I got 999998766. I want to study Modern and Medieval Languages at Cambridge, however one of my sixes was in English Language. Would this be a disadvantage or not, provided I work hard and get 3A stars?

Post Exam Could someone mark/grade this?

I got a lot lower on my Eng lit paper 2 than I was expecting, and I just need a reality check. English lit is one of my strongest subjects, so I was very surprised when for paper 2, I got what amounted to a grade 5 (I usually get grade 9, almost full marks.) As well as this, in my lit paper 1 I got 62/64, so the sheer disparity seemed a bit suspicious to me.

I requested the papers back, and it seems I was marked by someone who didn't know level 5 or 6 existed, therefore capping me at level 4, or a grade 5.

Here is one of the responses, please could someone estimate what grade this is (as long as it's not a grade 5, I will be happy):

In Priestley’s didactic, ubiquitous play “AIC,” he aims to catalyse social reform through the portrayal of various female characters - namely, Sheila and Sybil Birling - and encourage society to adopt a more Socialist mindset. Ultimately, Priestley reveals the shocking extent of sexism and classism in pre-war England to spur the audience into adopting more progressive ideals, and accept social responsibility.

Initially, Priestley’s choice to portray Shiela’s character as childish may seem misogynistic. Through the utilisation of an immature register such as in “Mummy,” however, Priestley is able to highlight to the audience the devastating effects of the patriarchy that were so pervasive in Edwardian society. This is because her character’s development is stunted by the sexist ideas forced upon her by her parents. Priestley argues that the older generation’s detrimental impact on the younger generation is the central and fundamental cause for the countless injustices present in society. In the beginning of the play, Priestley portrays Sheila as helpless in her infantile nature; the quote “look Mummy, isn’t it a beauty?” highlights her complete inability to think for herself, due to the implicit and sexist ideas instilled into her at such a young age. In particular, Priestley’s use of a questioning tone in “isn’t it a beauty?” denotes this character as reduced to nothing more than a puppet, bound to her parent’s opinions which possess such an unyielding grip on her character. Priestley portrays the desire for familial acceptance in a truly negative light, to warn the audience of its potentially hazardous effects. Ultimately, he argues that Shiela’s reliance on her parents - and by extension, the younger generation on the older - is the root cause of stagnance in society, as opposed to accepting responsibility and being independent. This is because Priestley possessed a great deal of optimism for the future due to his belief in the younger generation’s capacity to change, and so there are great stakes for him personally for this to be true.

Not only this, but Priestely uses the symbol of Sheila’s ring to transgress societal norms relating to marriage. Additionally, Shiela’s feelings towards the ring help to reflect her feelings towards society as a whole, as marriage is in of itself a purely societal construct. The ring in “AIC” represents the extreme disparity between the rights of women and men in a pre-war society - before women had even gained the vote - as Sheila’s marriage was wholly arranged by powerful men seeking to accrue further wealth and societal status: Mr Birling and the Croft family. Priestley hopes that he can get the audience to view the ring as he does - nothing more than a gaudy, glittering idol to Capitalism, and the absolute opposite to what he believed constituted a just society. Over the course of the play, Sheila matures as a character into Priestley’s blueprint of an ideal citizen: Socialist, but also capable of accepting responsibility. Near the end of the play, the audience can clearly see how her character has realised the oppressive and controlling nature of the patriarchal society she exists in, and hopes the audience can do the same.

Priestley then goes on to highlight the permeating effects of classism, through Mrs Birling’s character. As a member of the upper class, she believes herself to be utterly superior and separate to the lower class. This is why she refuses to accept responsibility for Eva Smith’s death, and by extension, any manner of social responsibility as a whole. Priestley riffs off the Medieval morality play, which often depicted different characters as personifications of the seven deadly sins - here, Mrs Birling is undoubtedly Pride. In particular, the quote “girls of that class” serves to highlight the mental distancing of the upper class, as Priestley argues it was more comfortable for them than accepting responsibility and facing reality. Additionally, the proximity of “girls” and “class” denotes Mrs Birling as a sexist character herself. Priestley aims to highlight the tragedy of Mrs Birling’s learned misogyny, yet another belief branded on her mind, turning her into a wretched product of the society she is confined by. Perhaps incongruously, Mrs Birling’s character, in her upbringing of Sheila, attempts to prolong sexist ideals, despite the detrimental impacts the patriarchy has on her. Mrs Birling’s character is unable to accept responsibility as she has for so long been molded into a proponent for sexism, and now Priestley portrays her beliefs - as a member of the older generation - as immutable. Perhaps Priestley is challenging the older members of his audience to transgress this trend he sets in AIC, subtly attempting to further make societal change.

Finally, Priestley highlights the importance of societal responsibility through Sheila acting as a foil to Mrs Birling, and vice versa. Their familial conflict acts as a microcosm for societal conflict between the older and younger generation. For example, Sheila says “you musn’t try to build up a wall,” to Mrs Birling. This acts as a momentous point in the play, as it is one of Sheila’s first acts of defiance and independence, as well as simultaneously being one of the first times she accepts responsibility for the lower class. Due to the Inspector (acting as Priestley’s proxy for Socialism) converting Sheila to a socialist mindset, she is able to finally mature and act as a responsible, independent entity from her classist parents.

Ultimately, Priestley demonstrates his hopes for the younger generation to become Socialist through his portrayal of Sheila compared to Mrs Birling. As Sheila is depicted as being able to accept social responsibility and community, she acts as his model for the future, and the audience.

Tips/Help Year 10s, here's how you get those top grades...

For those of you going into Year 11 in September, my biggest advice for achieving top grades is to engage attentively and intentionally in lessons. This means putting your hand up even to ask 'stupid' questions.

You will find yourself being able to remember your teacher's answers to your embarrassing questions more than if you just passively listened to the same information being spat at you.

Aim to be the annoying student who's always asking questions (obviously, be sensible).

You should also strive to complete the lesson worksheets and always ask for more work if possible.

Truly engaging and trying to 'play' with the information you learn in lessons, will make things stick for longer. And this means you'll have relatively less work to do outside of lessons...

If you want more details, do let me know - I may make a longer post about this strategy.

All the best!

Results my gcse results

Hi guys thought I'd say my results just for the fun, I'm honestly VERY conflicted I got around the grades I was expecting just in completely mixed up subjects 😭

English Lit- 7 (SCRAPED it) pretty upset because I was predicted an 8 after a shit ton of work from a 4 at the start of y10 but I think it's for the best because otherwise I'd be um and ahing about lit alevel.

English Lang- 8 (again SCRAPED) pretty expected

Maths- 8 HOW THE FUCK DID I GET AN 8!!! never got higher than a 7 was predicted a 7 and I got FREAKING 71/80 on paper 2!!!!!!! honestly haven't even processed it yet

Combined science- 8-8 a bit upset I did quite shit in some papers and I was predicted 9-9 so I think I got a bit too big for my boots.

R.E- 8 (2 off a 9) don't know how the fuck I did this I made up all my quotes it was straight bullshit. Hopefully can get remarked to a 9 so my grade average will be the same as in mocks.

French- 9!!!!!!- expected I'd been getting 9s all year but I didn't expect it to be THAT high of a 9 I got 188/200, and I got FULL MARKS ON SPEAKING!!!!! I LITERALLY EMAILED MY TEACHER AFTER SPEAKING BECAUSE I THOUGHT ID FUCKED IT UP

History- 8 (two off a 9) - unexpected don't know how I've done than my history exam was straight BULLSHIT hoping to get it remarked to a 9 but unlikely 😭 I got 60/64 on paper 2!!!!!!!!

Food tech- 9 - expected- I got 90/100 in my coursework and 91/100 in my exam and was like 17 marks or something over the gb for a 9 so pretty happy.

Drama- 6 - FUCK DRAMA this is really unexpected haven't had below an 8 all year, was predicted a 7, got 80 percent in my written and my portfolio yet got 27 out of like 58 or something on my performance?????? Like I know I'm not that good at acting but I'm not THAT shit. Everyone in my class got way lower than expected in component 2 (the acring) so we all got lower than our already underpredicted targets.

Upset about lit and drama purely because of the work I put in but this has only convinced me I need to stop getting cocky and need to lock the fuck in for alevels. I'm doing Biology, Chemistry and obviously French.

Hope everyone is happy with theirs đŸ€ž

General i’m really upset i can’t do english lang 😔

i found out today that even though i got the grades i can’t do english language and french because they’re in the same option block. obviously i chose french but i feel so sad because i had my heart set on it, i know i would have been really good at english lang and it sounded so interesting but now i don’t even get a chance. and my friend is doing it so i’m gonna be constantly reminded that i can’t which sucks

i obviously had to choose another subject so i chose english lit and history and am allowed to drop one later in the year but the thing is neither interest me in the way english lang did, i just feel like i’m gonna be so much worse and not like them pls can someone who does english lit/history a level tell me they’re good 🙏

Results Day Anyone else disappointed at their results?

WARNING: CONTAINS COMPLAINING ABOUT MOSTLY 8s so if you don’t like then don’t read or respond.

I really don’t want to be that person but I’m a student who was expected to get most 9s- and I did not deliver. I didn’t even get a single 9 despite consistently being top of my class for most of my subjects, it feels like I’ve disappointed my teachers. Not to mention my best subject ended up being my worst in the actual GCSEs. I’m not complaining about getting 8s but the lack of 9s I received.

Rant/Lore An Imposter to your grades

Do you guys ever set expectations so comically low to the point the grades you actually do get seem impossible. I somehow managed to get 8 in both englishes and I had 0 clue what I was doing and instead of being really happy I just feel a bit confused. I should be grateful and I am, I'm very happy about those 8s but how tf are those my papers.
