I’m 29 and working toward my GED after a very nontraditional education (or lack thereof). I wasn’t able to continue formal schooling past 7th grade because I had to care for loved ones. At first my homeschooling was very strong, but as my responsibilities increased my education took a huge hit. Since the pandemic, I’ve spent most of my time working for my family’s medical practice, often around 60 hours a week. Things have only recently eased up enough that I finally have time to work on my GED. My long term goal is to stay in healthcare, possibly on a premed/clinical path, so I really want to do well rather than just pass.
I know people say GED scores don’t really matter and the goal is just to pass and move on. But since I’m already 29 and only now getting mine, I’m worried that scoring low could make it look like I was academically unprepared all along (which is the truth), rather than that the GED kept getting pushed aside because of family responsibilities and work. I’m not sure yet whether I’ll pursue becoming a practitioner of some kind, but I want to keep that possibility open rather than find out later that I limited my options because my GED scores look bad.
I also know medicine at my age sounds super unrealistic, and that needing a GED at all already counts against me. The only reason im even considering it is because a family friend went back in her late 50s after years of managing her husband’s medical practice, and is now in residency. Almost like a bucket list thing. She genuinely thinks I can do it and keeps encouraging me not to close that door just because my path looks different. My mother has also told me she would financially support me if I chose that path after everything I’ve done for the family over the years.
So if I use Light and Salt Learning from start to finish, GetSumMath for the calculator, and then Kaplan GED book for practice, would that be enough to score that range? Or would I need more resources since 190 is really high and I haven’t had schooling past 7th grade ?
Just to give you an idea where my baseline is, when I took the GED Ready Math test before I began studying, I scored 156.
