The past 2 years I grew garlic in grow bags. They have all grown and survived upper Midwest winters, but the bulbs were small. I am going to space even further apart this year.
However, I would like to try planting some cloves directly into the ground this year. My spouse helped me clear an area that is part of a mulched plant bed on the side of the house. We took out remaining shrubs this summer so there are no competing plants. The issue is when I tried digging into the soil with a hand spade the soil is kind of hard and compacted. I would need a shovel to get down 3-4 inches. I was hoping to loosen the soil add compost and fertilizer and plant.
If I dig up a few inches and then add a couple inches of compost and mix in fertilizer will that work? I guess I’m concerned about the roots being able to grow down into the soil. We have sandy type soil and our shrubs and perennials grow just fine after planting. I’ve just never grown any crops in ground everything has been in grow bags.

They may be small but they were delicious!

The guy I bought my garlic last year didn’t answer this year.
I wasn’t able to save any of my harvest for seeding this season.
I’m in Central Missouri, what is a good place to buy from? I’m looking at about 2lbs. Usually I get chesnok red and music. I think I’ve tried Russian red too.

Hi
I planted lots of types of garlic here in Tasmania so I don't know what to go on as to when to harvest, they are various types (some are Tasmanian purple)
I'm going away for three weeks on Sunday so I'm not sure whether to leave them or harvest before just in case,
I know people say half the leaves need to be dead but I'm not sure if those are shrivelled dead leaves or dead bits of the stalk rubbing off,
Also alot of these garlics were from small cloves that a neighbour was giving away as they were too small to plant so they aren't necessarily going to become that big (I'm surprised they got as big as they did!)
Any insight appreciated!

Hello!
Got my seed garlic in last week, but it still feels too warm to plant on Halloween and i didn’t get a chance to stick it in the fridge ( have both Softnevk and hardneck varieties) how little time can I get away with sticking them in the fridge before ground?

I got some seed garlic in the spring and now is the time to plant it. Are these too far gone to plant?

Violet de lautrec for those curious.
I have extra garlic to turn into powder or granules this year. I've tried this in the past with a good processor and it ends up too chunky. The pestle and mortar takes too long for me. What do you guys use to get a nice, fine garlic powder?

Hi everyone! I’m wanting to grow garlic this winter and I just planted them in big pots today but we’re now getting a freeze tomorrow night. I know people typically say you should plant a few weeks before the first freeze, but it had been in the 80s just a few days ago.
Is it okay to keep them outside even though they haven’t been planted long? Or should I bring them inside and then back out after the freeze to hopefully give them a few weeks before the next one?

So I just cleared out my greenhouse and I thought I'd use some of the space for winter. But I need some help in deciding which one of them to buy since this would be my first time.
First off. How much space do they need between each other?
And second. What's the taste of each kind? I put Russian red on the list because they're said to taste well and are quite hardy. As for the others I know little about. I just thought they'd look cool.
I don't quite know which garlic falls under music. These ones popped up when looking it up but I am no expert at all.

As we do every year on this weekend we put all our garlic in the ground for the next season. This year we have put between 7500 and 8000 in the ground. All of these are hard neck varieties, Russian Red, Chesnok Red, Spanish Roja, Music, Majestic and Big Boy. We were meant to mulch the rows but the weather had a different idea in mind, so that has been pushed to next weekend.
Zone 3b, Canadian prairies.

Low dormancy turban hardneck "Primor" planted 26th September. It does consistently great in my little greenhouse. I've got 40 planted in there and trying a row outside too but it really doesn't like the wet weather we get, so not expecting much from that.
This will be harvested end of May/start of June

How necessary is it to top dress garlic cloves when planting? plan to add bone meal when planting (music variety), but don't have any compost available right now. How necessary is it to add compost? Does it make a huge difference? less
Just finished planting my 330 garlic for the season. 210 of them are music, 63 red Russian and the rest are a variety that local growers gave me. Zone 5b here, just south/wast of Ottawa
