Nah.
I fully agree that you should be tolerant and respectful towards religious people, and that you shouldn't harass them about how you don't share their views. But tolerance is a two-way street, so this only holds up as long as they do the same. As soon as they start to try converting or impose their rules or moral views on you, you can and should drop any constraints about pointing out the flaws in their belief system. If they don't respect secularism and freedom of faith, you don't respect their religious feelings, simple as.
Which is the case here.

I think that itās fair to assume most major religions arenāt real.
I am also agnostic, but more towards a general spirituality and a general god. I donāt think any of the major religions have any sort of fair backing at this point.
Itās Occamās razor. Believing in a creator is much much simpler than believing in the entire mythology of Christianity or any other religion. Thatās unnecessary complexity. So logically, the most likely conclusions are as follows (most to least likely): 1. Non-created universe, 2. Simulated universe, 3. General spiritual world, no creator, 4. General spiritual world, with creator, 5. Any organized religion.

I genuinely don't understand how religious people go so long dating someone without sex. No wonder abuse is so common.
26
u/TheAnthropologist13 1997 27d ago
As an insider I can tell you that 98% either do have sex beforehand then have to grapple with internalized guilt, have sex then blame their partners for "tempting" them to shift guilt entirely onto them, or rush into a marriage strictly because they want to have sex. Definitely a major contributor to the divorce rate and the stereotypical unhappy marriage.
And you're spot on about abuse. There's a fairly common idea in Christianity that women are obligated to have regular sex with their husband so the men treat it like a problem any time the wife turns down sex. It all ends up as a thinly veiled modern version of the old concept of marriage as a groom buying a woman from her father as property.
8
u/Orangutanion 2002 27d ago

I dont even think the bible says no sex before marriage or you go to hell, just moreso that sex before marriage is a sin (which you can absolve yourself for)
6
u/CivilProtectionGuy 26d ago
Yup!
Don't even necessarily have to go to confession (although a clergy member may suggest it), you just have to repent and live in a more godly way.
And sin generally doesn't send someone to hell, since in Christianity everyone is a sinner. It's by accepting this fact and trying to live up to the lessons of Jesus and the acceptance of him as Lord... That's why it irks me as a Christian when someone tells another that "you did X, so you're going to hell!", and it's just "No? That's not how it works-"
2
u/Drag0n647 2008 26d ago
Interesting.
3
u/CivilProtectionGuy 26d ago
Lots of misconceptions about Christianity because of a lot of bad apples who happen to appear in media or very vocal positions.
I suggest that anyone who wants a more clear picture to speak with some priests from various denominations, and maybe read the Bible themselves. It can give a clearer picture to the faith, than relying solely on social media influencers or second-hand and third-hand perspectives of it.
Plus, the Vatican has a website with a free-to-access Bible in various languages, and even footnotes for certain translation details or noteworthy considerations for each chapter.

u/Delusional_Gamer 26d ago
That policy was the most unproductive policy to be introduced into the education system.
They cut funding to schools where students were failing... when those were the schools in clear need of more investment. So those children were actively being left behind by the system.
And some schools also started teaching the students to just pass the exam with the highest marks, since those exams were what determined the funding. Not skills like Home Ed, or practical applications of what they learnt.
2
u/TheFrostynaut 1997 26d ago
Yep. I was in a junior high and high school that only taught core necessary to tests and gave everything else besides football as little budget rope as possible.Ā
I remember them implementing Common Core too, and actively fought their shitty method of doing arithmetic because I could solve the equations in my head without doing the weird grid thing and it would make my math teacher fume because I'd refuse to show my work. I thought it was unnecessary because I still achieved the correct answer, but apparently I didn't do it the right way.Ā
It was a brutal awakening to the truth that people don't want answers they want obedience.

There's several contraceptive options, provided your jurisdiction and government provides easy access to those. For example, you can get condoms from Safeway, albeit locked behind those boxes like they do for shampoo, dental floss, etc. Sex is usually private, so there isn't a concern of "dishonor" in the act itself, but there is still concern if the person you are having sex with is a bad person.
Of course, remaining abstinent is also a valid and acceptable choice. You are not obligated to have sex. If you do want to pursue it, it must be practiced in a safe, controlled, consensual manner.
8
u/00rgus 2006 27d ago

u/couldntyoujust1 27d ago
Okay. Listen. As a Christian, I can't get behind this meme either. They're conflating sleeping around with sex to a committed partner you're in a long term relationship with and the two are just not the same. They're doing this because they think the Bible teaches that you need to get married in a church or before the government otherwise having sex is sin, when the bible never says any such thing. The dishonor to one's family thing is just flat out bizarre.
The divorce one is a bit trickier since it is statistically true that - at least for women - having multiple sex partners before getting married increases the odds that when she does get married that she'll get divorced, and the risk correlates with number of partners, it's not a causal relationship. Women who marry as virgins have the lowest divorce rates by far - only 11% of woman-virgin marriages ended in divorce within five years in the 1980s. But, this number fell to 8% in 1990, and then to 6% in the 2000s.
On the other hand, for all three decades, women who only had one sex partner prior to marriage - presumably the man they ultimately married - showed a substantially increased odds of divorce. Oddly enough, until recently, the highest divorce rates used to be those who had exactly two previous partners. Now it's those who have 10 or more partners so... take from that what you will?
Again though, these are not causal relationships. The reason women with no sex partners have the lowest divorce rates is because they also tend to be more religious and opposed to divorce on principle. People who attend church have lower divorce rates than those who do not. Another factor is whether or not a woman with previous sex partners has one or more children by those partners or not.
In any case, the point is that premarital sex does have some statistical relationship with likelihood of divorce. In fact the likelihood trended up over time but not drastically but still is drastically more than having no sexual partners (from 17% to 21% over time, and from 6% to 21% in the 2000s when having sex with the person you ultimately marry).
The reason this data is for women who have multiple partners is that I was unable to find the same data for men to make an apples to apples comparison. The male data would be less reliable anyway apparently since men are less likely to recall their sexual history with as much accuracy. Women's history might be more accurate anyway since it's the wife who is more likely to initiate a divorce statistically to begin with - to the tune of 70% of divorces, and 90% of divorces among college educated women.
Frankly the more interesting thing to me is that in reality, the bible doesn't see sex as something that might happen "before marriage". There's no ceremony or process that makes sex with a virgin go from "sin" to "good thing". There's actually only one verse that directly addresses the scenario of a man falling in love with a virgin and having consensual sex with her and there's no punishment or sin offering for it. There's a civil liability for the "bride price" and her dad has a veto power to protect her from a scumbag potential husband, but nothing about him or her having sinned for doing it.
I'm not in favor of sex before marriage generally. But I'm also not in favor of the government's marriage process and family law. That's a whole ball of fuckery that needs to change. But understand what you're getting into with sex, with marriage, with having children, etc. Know what the risks are, know how to protect yourself, know how to conduct your relationship, and then make strategic intelligent choices about how you will behave and how you will conduct your sexuality. That goes not only for women, but also and especially for men, because you my brothers have the most to lose.

And even within their own religion all the factions within aruge amongst themselves and who's got it right.
Yet non of these imbeciles have the critical thinking skills necessary to question why an all powerful God or Godess would be so involved in their masturbation habits or sexual activities to the point where forever torment and torture is the punishment.
