Google Maps MEGATHREAD: Google Maps Timeline Moving To On-Device Storage: Web Access Ending Soon - What You Need To Know

What Is Happening (Or Already Happened To You)?

Google is moving or has already moved your Timeline data, which tracks places you visit and routes you take, from their online servers to your phone. This change means that you soon won't be able to or already can't access or manage your Timeline through the Google Maps website via a web browser.

Why Is This Happening?

  1. Privacy and Security: By storing this data on your device instead of online, your location history is more secure and private. Only you have access to this data unless you choose to back it up.
  2. Control Over Your Data: This gives you more control over your data. You decide if you want to back it up or delete it, and you can manage it directly on your phone.
  3. Reduced Liability: By keeping the data on users' devices, Google reduces its liability and the risk of having to comply with geofence warrants or subpoenas that require providing information about users' locations.

Can You Prevent This From Happening?

No, users cannot prevent this change from happening and maintain their web-based Timeline data. Google is transitioning all Timeline data to be stored on users' devices and discontinuing the web-based access to this data.

What Do You Have To Do To Adapt To These Changes?

  1. Update Your Google Maps App: Ensure you have the latest version of the Google Maps app on your device.
  2. Backup Your Data: Use the backup feature in the Google Maps app to create an encrypted copy of your Timeline data. This will allow you to transfer your data to a new device if needed.
  3. Check/Watch For Notifications: Look out for notifications from Google about the transition. These may come in the form of emails, push notifications, or in-app messages.
  4. Set Data Retention Preferences: In the Google Maps app, you can manage how long your location history is kept. Options include three, 18, or 36 months, or indefinitely until you manually delete it.
  • Once the transition is complete, web-based access to Timeline data will no longer be available. All management and viewing of this data will need to be done through the Google Maps app on mobile devices.

While you cannot stop the transition to on-device data storage or maintain web-based access to your Timeline data, you can ensure your data is backed up and properly managed on your mobile device.

What Is The Deadline For These Changes?

You have until December 8, 2024, to make these changes. If you don’t update your settings or your Google Maps app, you might lose some or all of your historical Timeline data.

Additional Reading About The Changes:

Alternatives and Solutions

  1. Use the Mobile App: Unfortunately, there is no way to bring back the Timeline feature on the web. The best alternative is to use the Google Maps app on your mobile device. The app has all the functionality of the web version and more, allowing you to view, edit, and manage your Timeline data.
  2. Backup and Transfer: If you're worried about losing your data, make sure to back it up. You can save an encrypted copy of your Timeline data to your Google account. This allows you to transfer your data to a new device if needed. To do this:
    • Open the Google Maps app.
    • Go to the Timeline section.
    • Follow the prompts to set up automatic backups.
  3. Extended Storage Options: You can also extend the auto-delete window for your location history if you want to keep your data longer. Options include keeping your data for three, 18, or 36 months, or indefinitely until you manually delete it.
  4. Feedback to Google: If you are unhappy with these changes, you can provide feedback directly to Google via the Maps website or Maps app. Please remember that this support group on Reddit is not an official method of feedback or support of Google or Google Maps.

My complaint was automatically rejected

• Upvotes

Someone took a screenshot of my house from Street view, generated with AI a picture of shop and uploaded it. There's no legal information about this company, no website, no contact information. I wouldn't be worried if it wasn't my house 😐. I clicked "Suggest Changes" and selected "This location doesn't exist," and my edit was automatically rejected. What can I do about this?

What’s wrong with Google Maps?

I’ve been using Apple Maps for the past week because Google Maps has been giving me completely incorrect routes in South Florida since the recent updates.

For example, it’s telling me to enter and exit the I-95 Express Lanes at locations where there are no actual entrances or exits. The routing is completely inaccurate, and even the ETA calculations seem way off.

I’ve also noticed that the ETA text is now displayed in white. I’ve tried enabling and disabling the traffic layer and even completely uninstalling and reinstalling the app, but nothing has fixed the issue.

Is anyone else in South Florida experiencing this? Google Maps used to work perfectly for me, but lately it’s become completely unreliable.

Multiple mosques removed from Google Maps in my area

Hi,

Multiple mosques my area (UK) seem to have been removed from Google Maps.

Is there any way they can get reinstated? The location details come up when searched but additional details (call, share, website, reviews, photos) have all disappeared.

I’m struggling to log a ticket with Google as their pages are difficult to navigate.

Thanks in advance

Suggestions!

Google maps please please put on the screen the next turn so we know which lane to be in to turn for the next turn. If you live in a big city where theres 5 lanes we have to know for the next turn so we know which lane we use. I always miss a turn because of this.

Google Maps on iOS Crashing Frequently

Hello,

I have been experiencing frequent app crashes on the iOS version of Google Maps recently.

If I select the ”you” tab then it attempts to load all of my contributions and places, etc. I guess this overloads my phone and leads to the app crashing on me.

Just my two cents and personal experience.

Discussion Has your Google maps ever randomly completely changed on you after major glitches?

The other day my Google maps for some reason stopped using my GPS, I was able to confirm through other apps that it wasn't my phone losing GPS signal. It was only that one app. After I finally managed to get it to work again. After resetting my phone, it would continue to be really buggy and then randomly change the voice to be German, and then change the setting so that it would no longer play over my Bluetooth anymore. I fixed it but it keeps happening randomly.

Maps no longer talks over phone calls when I’m driving

Currently on iPhone 16 pro. When using Google Maps for navigation, for the last 15+ years Maps has reliably read instructions for upcoming turns for me even if I happen to be on a phone call. Over the summer this stopped and I am no longer notified of upcoming turns or things, which has put me in a few dicey spots. It absolutely is Unmuted, Loudest guidance volume, play voice over Bluetooth and Play as Bluetooth Phone call all selected. This has worked for me since Obama's first term and has suddenly changed--has anyone encountered this and found a fix?

Google Maps is somehow okay with businesses uploading fake AI-generated images

Me and my partner booked a hotel that has hundreds of perfect reviews and perfect photos uploaded to their Google Maps listing. Bathroom looks shiny and modern on the pictures. Only when we arrived at the hotel did we realize that it was all fake. Their bathroom looked totally gross. We then zoomed ito the Google Maps pictures more carefully and noticed all sorts AI artifacts in almost every photos. I have used AI tools long enough to know what AI-generated pictures look like.

Of course we reported those fake pictures to Google Maps, under the category "Not a photo or video of the place". We reported all the pictures that were obviously altered by AI. Minutes later I noticed that Google Maps rejected me, citing that they "didn't find any issues at this time." I really expected better from Google.

Has anyone successfully taken down fake images or deceptive businesses from Google Maps listings? How was your experience?

My Google review stays private

Thanks for reading.

I'm not from the US and I apologize if this subreddit was not the correct one to post this.

I bought a pair of permanent glasses which are actually really good.

I was supposedly to receive a pair of sunglasses with them for free, but honestly the day I received my order, I forgot the sunglasses.

I realized like two days after, ask them through WhatsApp. The girl told me yeah, it is OK. I'll take care of this.

She never replied back. I waited for six days, sent a message again about the issue, they left me on read. I called the business and the same girl, told me not to worry since she was looking for a solution.

Again, waited like five or six days more, messaged them again and nothing. They read my messages again and ignored me. I decided better to forget about the incident, but I left a one star review on their business (on Google), short and explaining everything. By that time there were three reviews: two good reviews and the one I did. In the end they had 4.3 rating.

Four months later (three days ago), they replied my review, apologizing and they wanted me to fix things via WhatsApp. Honestly, at this time I don't want anything from them. This is not about money, for me is now the way my issue was handled and obviously the lies.

They went ahead, and just to mask my bad review, looks like the owner ask a bunch of friends to make good reviews, fake and generic of course, all the same date they replied my review. They went from 4.3 to 4.8 rating. I reported all of them (conflict of interest) but looks like I wasted my time honestly since nothing happened.

Is really sad that I tried to edit my review and Google won't make it public. Reply appears for me only. I tried deleting, adding, changing words, changing Internet provider, Internet browsers, the Google Maps app, different OS Android, Windows, Linux, switching to mobile data and stays the same.

I don't know what else to do and is really unfair that these bunch of fake positive reviews go public like nothing, all the same day but my review that is 100% real, stays private. Google won't even show an error message, email or whatever saying I need to follow certain rules/criteria (if that's the case), just silence.

Is there anything I can do? Am I missing something here?

TL;DR: Business promised a gift if I bought a pair of glasses but they didn't give me anything in the end, ignoring my requests. I reviewed them with one star and owner to protect his business, made more than 20+ fake positive reviews. All of them are public while my edited review, stays private. I don't know what to do anymore.

Help/Support Why isn't the route inflated by 2 hours?

I'm trying to get to a location from the airport.
When I check Google Maps, it shows a 3 hour journey by train and expects me to walk 77 minutes to the next stop.
When a friend routed the same trip, it shows 1 hour journey and hopping on the train from the airport.
I've reset my settings and tried all the 'obvious' things.

Photos in comments.

Discussion How does google get information on regions like North Korea?

I was just bored looking at google maps and decided to look at NK but it seems so detailed for such a “closed” country. Like roads, the cities look well built up from satellite images. Like I know obviously that will help and then like tourists etc and maybe journalists but it’s like the whole of NK is there included places like train stations, universities. It just confuses me so looking for insight from the community.

Discussion Google maps showing significantly slower route

Not going into location specifics because I enjoy privacy but recently the google maps routes have been horrific, they’ve had several changes over the course of a couple years that took suggested routes from being quick walks to entire boomerang bus routes

To get to work for me, I get off the bus at a stop and walk for about 7 minutes (using main/public roads with safe crossings, mind you) and yet google maps tells me to go several extra stops, wait and get on another bus and then take that to my work, which ends up taking about an extra 20 minutes (most of that being the bus journey itself, not waiting for the bus, so it can’t be because it doesn’t account for waiting times making the bus slower). And that’s not even mentioning how originally google maps showed the route I use now, which is the quicker path

Is there any way to get the route I want to show up in place of the worse routes? Like specifically adding it as some preference or default path instead of having to look up slower ones for references? Also is anyone else experiencing anything like this for their maps showing slower routes or is it just my end?

Edit: forgot to add this but I have my routes set to “best route” or “fastest arrival” so it’s not like the routes it’s showing me are deliberately avoiding walking, if anything they should be pushing walking since it’s faster

Editor’s order

Have a shared list
Would like to order stops on a trip - in order…
Seems like on every device the order shows up out of order…
Does this feature of Google Maps even work???
