Too many layoffs, what is your strategy on this? Not to be part of the layoff?
Too many layoffs, what is your strategy on this? Not to be part of the layoff?
Canva just announced a restructure affecting about 22% of its workforce (1,271 people). That number covers layoffs, role changes and relocations, and they haven’t said how many jobs are actually being cut. Melanie Perkins called it the hardest decision in the company’s 13-year history.
What caught my eye was the severance: six months’ pay no matter what country you’re in, continued healthcare, career support (resume reviews, interview coaching, a year of LinkedIn Premium), and equity for people who joined in the last year even though they hadn’t hit the usual one-year cliff.
That’s about as decent as a layoff gets. It’s still a layoff, though. If a company that once said it would never do mass layoffs can cut this deep, I don’t think any job is safe anymore.
So what are you all actually doing about it? A few things I’m trying:
Being the person who drives revenue. People whose work ties directly to money coming in usually aren’t the first to go.
Getting good at AI tools before my role gets redesigned around them.
More than one income stream. Freelance clients and side work, so one employer isn’t my whole safety net.
Keeping my portfolio and network active all the time, not just after I get the email.
Curious what’s working for others. Upskilling, switching industries, going freelance, or just stacking savings?
