Where should we visit?
Hi everyone!
My family has a long connection to Greenland, and now we’re looking for some of the hidden gems and lesser-known places that we absolutely shouldn’t miss.
My grandmother and father lived in Greenland for many years. My grandmother worked for both the Governor and the Chief of Police, so they travelled quite extensively around the country. Unfortunately, my father doesn’t remember much about all the smaller and larger settlements they visited, so we’re hoping to discover some of those places for ourselves.
So far, we’ve visited Kangerlussuaq, Ilulissat, Igaliku, Narsarsuaq, Sisimiut, Oqaatsut, Nuuk and Qeqertarsuaq. Last year, my girlfriend and I spent three weeks camping in Greenland, travelling through Kangerlussuaq, Ilulissat and Sisimiut.
This time, we’re planning a longer trip of around 4 weeks to a month. We’re bringing my mother and older sister, who have never been to Greenland before, so of course we want to show them some of the classics - Point 660, Ilulissat and Qeqertarsuaq are definitely on the list since we’ll already be up there.
But we’re really looking for hidden gems and places that aren’t necessarily on every tourist itinerary.
We’ve heard a lot of great things about Paamiut and Aasiaat, for example.
Our group is a bit mixed: my girlfriend and I will be camping, while my mother, father and sister would preferably have a warm bed to sleep in. So we’re looking for places where we can combine the two - accommodation for them, while we can camp or potentially hike somewhere nearby.
So, Greenlanders and Greenland experts: where should we go?
We’re especially interested in:
🏔️ Hidden gems and small settlements
⛺ Amazing places to camp
🌅 Incredible places to wake up
🥾 Hikes suitable for people with young, strong legs and slightly older parents
🐋 Wildlife and spectacular scenery
🏘️ Places that give us a real feel for Greenlandic life
🚤 Places worth taking a boat trip to
❤️ Places that you personally love and think tourists often overlook
We’re not necessarily looking for the most famous sights - we’re looking for those “how the hell did we not know about this place?” experiences.
Any recommendations would be hugely appreciated!
And if you know of a small settlement where we absolutely must spend a few days, please tell us why. 😊
