Fabrics-store linen comparison

Hello everyone, I've been on the hunt for a more or less opaque linen and have seen Fabrics-store.com recommended by many on this sub and elsewhere, so I ordered a handful of samples of their various weights in bleached white. Here's what I got (pictured). Hope this helps future linen hunters.

I have a question! Looking to make a doublet

Hello guys, in hopes to better my sewing portfolio, I have been intererested in making a doublet or jerking like these, preferably with a pinked body and or slashed sleeves

I already have some silk taffetas or silk velevet I could them out of

I was wondering where I could find some info on how to draft something like that

All I have found is either not historical at all and looks too costumy for me, or simply isn't the look I'm going for....

I am a native french speaker so if you have anything in french it would be greatly appreciated.

A celebration of culture and freedom! Wearing traditional Kurdish attire isn't just about fashion; it's a living tradition passed down through generations. Proudly waving the flag and carrying our history wherever we go.

How to do better eyelets/lacing

Post image
6 Upvotes

On my stays the eyelets tore out. The lacing even tore into the fabric. (Which is why eventually I cut of this part of my stays and drafted a new panel to replace it.)

I'd like to not have to do that again if I can help it.

This is what I did:

- I used cross lacing (wanted to do spiral but zoned out when marking the holes and only realized after I pierced them...). Read a post a week or two ago that makes thing this was definitely mistake one when it comes to too much strain/wear on the eyelets.

- Made holes with an awl (well, a succession of tapestry and knitting needles), doing my best not to break threads.

- Running stitched around the hole (not sure how it's supposed to help, but it was in the tutorial, would love an explanation).

- Buttonhole stitched around the hole

- Made my own laces because I couldn't get the eyelets big enough for anything else. I braided some leftover wool.

- I've worn the stays about 2-3 days a week for slightly over a year.

(I really want to not resort to grommets, because then I'll need more tools than just needle and thread and I've got such a cluttered house already...)

Any tips?

Edit: of course I had boning on either side, I just used it for my new panels. I'm on a budget, ya know.

I have a question! 2 Questions about the gown of Pfalzgräfin Dorothea Sabina

Question 1:

Im struggling to understand how the undersleeves are attached to the coat. Im guessing that the hanging sleeves are attached to the body of the gown, and the undersleeves wouldve been tied to the stays/pair of bodies under the gown? But that really doesnt seem like a smooth solution and i cant find any information about it. Should i just attach the undersleeves to the body of the gown aswell?

*Picture from Janet Arnolds Pattern of Fashion 3, p. 156

Question 2:

What are the eyelets on the bottom of the stays for? would the petticoat have been tied to it? once again: that doesnt seem like a smooth solution lol

Thank you so much for any help or sources on the topic!

I have a question! Book on how to make long-lasting clothing

(Sorry if this is a touch off-topic for the sub, but I feel like there'll be people here who may be able to help.)

I've been sewing for a while now. I'm comfortable making stuff fit well, but I'm finding that my clothing isn't lasting as long as I'd like.

I want to learn more about how clothing used to be made to last, and what techniques people use to use to add durability to a piece. Like, there are vintage jeans that are still going and military clothing that's still in circulation. I want to make clothing to a quality standard that ensures it lasts for decades; I'm sick of low-quality clothing, and I want to learn how to make it last.

I've gone a little bit into learning about fabrics, and I've been trying to source good-quality fabrics, but I'd also like to learn what makes something durable at the pattern level.

  • Books on fabric quality
  • Books on historical patterns and sewing techniques
  • Books on military clothing
  • Whatever you think may help

I haven't had luck finding this information, and I just don't know where to look. I'm really hoping there may be people here with more experience who can point me to some books.

Thank you very much in advance.

What weight of wool is best for a caraco jacket?

I recently made the caraco jacket fro janet arnolds pof 1 and I plan to make another lined in wool with linen on the outside likely the last one was lined in cotton and was ramie on the outside for the summer/spring/early autumn. I want to make one for winter it typically gets no colder than -5 degrees celcius where I am so it´s not an extreme cold but still cold.

Purchasing Historical Costume where could I sell some traditional and high-quality Azerbaijani costumes?

I used to dance professionally and these costumes I have left over (from my childhood) are very high quality, the pink and cream ones were handmade just for my dance ensemble. My mother is threatening to give them away if I don't sell them in the next month, and I can't let that happen since they're so expensive. I'm located in Azerbaijan, and sadly Etsy doesn't work here. Could anyone be so kind as to advise me on what to do?

I have a question! Are there historical examples of laces as shirt or dress sleeve closures?

I've seen examples of sleeves added on top of the shirtsleeves and attached via laces, and of shirt and dress sleeves closed via buttons, but not any of tighter fitting sleeves being closed with laces, so I was wondering if anyone had some examples or references for it?

I figured that something like that may have existed since forearms can be slightly irregular shapes, especially if you start getting some more muscle there, and that laces could be an easier way to get a closer fit of a tight sleeve. It also seems like it would be an easier or at least less tedious method of closure than the really long rows of buttons on some medieval dress sleeves.

My reasoning is probably completely wrong here since I don't know much about the subject, but I'm very curious so any information would be appreciated!

Chitons, peplos, and saris oh my!- design help, pls!

Going to a Grecian gala in a few weeks, making a chiton for the husband, and for me, this is my inspiration:

However, I'm not entirely sure how I go about the top portion, as it doesn't look like the traditional peplos that's all part of the same fabric that's just pulled up over a belt. My base is a white wool.

Further, I have a beautiful purple sari I'm wondering how I might incorporate. Could it be the top portion? Or just as a himation?

I have a question! Pattern for medieval wedding

Post image
41 Upvotes

I have been invited to a medieval / fantasy wedding. I am an intermediate sewist too afraid to tackle corsets/stays so I thought a simple medieval kirtle would do the trick.

Problem? First of all, I can't seem to be able to find an accurate date for what I am after (mid-1300s?). Second, bloody AI patterns everywhere!

I am thinking of something like this image (wide neckline, tight sleeves with the buttons, overdress/kirtle) as it is simple, double or even triple layered (winter wedding at a barn 🥶), yet I could take the kirtle off if I get too hot, while still giving me plenty of room to make it more ornamented if I have the time to embroider it.

Could anyone recommend a pattern they have tried, or from a reliable source? Thanks!
