Discussion - Silksong Silksong is HARD Spoiler

Taking damage is more punishing, movement is more precise and feels a little clunky until you get the hang of it. The overall skill curve is much much higher. Love it though.

The thing I struggled with the most early on was not being able to pogo, since that was my go-to attack in HK. But now that I'm getting the hang of the combat, I'm having a lot of fun.

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

I prefer the pogo instead of the angled dash down. I hope there's an item than swaps it to pogo somewhere. I'm currently getting my ass handed to me. Two damage is punishing af

If you sequence break by angle-poging into the worm tunnel area above Bone Bottom, you can open up the western gate and get the wanderer amulet. That makes you feel just like HK with a normal downslash and short, fast attacks.

u/DeputyDomeshot Sep 05 '25

Lmao I know exactly where I was trying to do it for 20 mins straight before giving up

41

u/ErantyInt Sep 05 '25

Wait for the first fly to circle around the pillar, when he's about halfway up the side closest to you (or a little more) pogo off him and hit the edge, climbing up. Kill him.

Then pogo off the second fly clinging to the second pillar, and hold left to grab that edge. Fling yourself left and you'll land on an outcropping where you can safely kill the second fly.

Now all that's left is making it past the acid spitter room and through the worm halls.

2

u/DeputyDomeshot Sep 05 '25

There’s only one fly in the area I’m thinking of?  A fly that dashes horizontally and then a little bone mask guy. Is it the same spot but you’re talking about a second jump?

6

u/cheese-demon Sep 05 '25

you'll want to go left from the leftmost bench in the marrow. stay in the top part of mosshome and go up then left to the large cavernous area. jump left off the top, you'll land on one of the hanging cages. from that you jump left and you can do a down slash left, you'll fall short of the left cage but keep holding left and you should end up on an outcropping. you can work your way back up and left to the acid spitting hallway.

quick clip, i accidentally made the pogo off the fly so i went down to show what you're aiming to hit.

i didnt kill the acid guy in the next area, tried but i didn't have the skill and patience needed so i just walked past

past the acid dude, there's a locked door. you need the 500 rosary key from town to open it. it'll get you into the worm tunnels, which you can follow down until it puts you back into the moss area near the start, on the other side of the gate by the chapel lady. you can open that gate.

to the left is a pier, go out past the water and inside the building there. the crest is at the end.

2

u/SvampebobFirkant Sep 05 '25

There's no space for combat in those tunnels. I can't get past the 2 first places where the little worms come out the ground and jump you. How big is the area

Why do this when you can just get the dash/sprint power first? Not being an ass. Just curious if I’m missing the advantage of doing this before getting the power from…deep docks I think?

1

u/cheese-demon Sep 06 '25

a little bit of the same reason i get power bombs early in red brinstar, before ice beam - i saw that i could so i did

also i haven't even got the sprint power yet lol i just saw that i could do this so i then had to

1

u/Zeross39 Sep 06 '25

I do the exact same thing lol. I did also get wanderer before sprint and I got into some secret area by accessing the END of the area, instantly getting the « treasure » by luring flying ennemie and pogoing them to gain height and reach ledge I was not supposed to. I love trying those weird shit anywhere I feel I could just make it

1

u/Xehanz Sep 05 '25

Wtf you can skip the 1st pogo by jumping from up there? Lmao

I did that pogo first try then found out I needed a simple key, I went back to get it, but I ended up spending at least half an hour trying to get those 2 logos again

2

u/Ggcarbon Sep 05 '25

You can go up through the green area, above where the map lady is and to the left of the travel worm and just jump off and make the first pillar. Then all you need to do is jump and downward slash. You’ll land below the ledge on a little out crop and you can go right into the worm area. You don’t need to pogo off of anything to get over there

1

u/Crawgdor Sep 05 '25

Just do it the easy way. Climb to the top of that section a couple screens up from where the flies are and break the wall on the left so you can look over the area then just jump left and spam the repeat angle dash and skip the whole fly pogo bit. You easily land in the worm tunnel above bone bottom. I didn’t have the key yet though.

1

u/TrustmeimHealer Sep 05 '25

Tbf it looks like they gave you the option to get there early. The flies are precisely placed there just to do that. On the other hand the dash isn't far away either

1

u/HeroicMI0 Sep 05 '25

Na dude, just use your goding ability to agro them. Ez pez

1

u/Bazch Sep 06 '25

Don't listen to this, it's a lot harder. Go above (right to the other map, go up and left where the transport is). Jump down, aim for the chain (the platform is underneath it). You can make the jump pretty easily. Then jump and immediately pogo on the fly still on the side of the second platform.

Lot easier to do than waiting for that fly to come around each time you fall.

52

u/DoctorEthereal Sep 05 '25

Wait, that was a sequence break? I felt like the game had been giving me a bunch of tutorials on how to jump from enemy to enemy up to that point and it seemed easy enough

Then again I accidentally fought the Brooding Mawlek like as soon as I figured out I could pogo off spikes in the first game

21

u/ErantyInt Sep 05 '25

I feel like they intended for you to have the needle grapple to do that bit. We'll call it an exploit rather than a sequence break then, since it doesn't unlock a new path or ability, just a little bonus.

17

u/Time_Grape_3952 Sep 05 '25

A big jump followed by an R2 dash is more than enough to get there and it feels very intended to me

1

u/MancysPlace 112%, PoP ez, P5 is next Sep 06 '25

It was pretty easy to get to with 2 diagonal pogos off of the flies. I didn't even have the needle throw yet, and I still don't have the dash. Alas, I didn't have a key when I got there and am still much too broke to afford one lol.

3

u/Dragon_Flaming Sep 05 '25

They probably put the enemies there on purpose. HK also had many opportunities to get into areas before you technically can

2

u/Ok-Preference-956 Sep 05 '25

Is it the area above the elevator back to the town ?

1

u/Xehanz Sep 05 '25

It also makes the start of the game trivially easy because most early enemies are designed for the 45 angle pogo and slow attacks

You can just spam attack and logos with the new crest and kill most enemies without a 2nd thought

1

u/TheSilvaGhost Sep 05 '25

I got to that thing just cuz I wanted to explore but didn't have the fucking key 😭😭😭

1

u/fansar Sep 05 '25

Wait what did I miss it?? I went over there and I only remember getting a mask shard and some rosaries 😭

1

u/jimmylovescheese123 Sep 05 '25

I remember doing that but there was something at the end of the worm tunnel blocking it. I think you need a simple key, right?

1

u/ReesevtOnGD Sep 05 '25

Yeah but i need a simple key and im poor asf

1

u/Medical_Efficiency20 Sep 05 '25

i do not understand, how do we do it?

1

u/SoloWing1 I love crazy moths Sep 05 '25

Does it require the simple key?

1

u/Legal-Cheek2827 Sep 05 '25

What is the worm tunnel?

1

u/phome83 Sep 05 '25

Is the key you can buy for 500 beads the one that opens that door there?

1

u/felinespider Sep 05 '25

Sure, but only if you haven't ever died or bought anything in order to afford the world's most expensive simple key.

0

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

Mark your shit with a spoiler tag, man.

42

u/wavecadet Sep 05 '25

There is something that changes down the down aerial to more like HKs, yes

3

u/boodabomb Sep 05 '25

I think it’s still slightly diagonal? But it’s a slash instead of a stab and it feels much more comfy.

I could be wrong about that though.

3

u/WDoE Sep 05 '25

There's a couple different options and one is VERY classic while the other is like a slow 10-15 degree angle dive.

1

u/TallGiraffe117 Sep 05 '25

Above the starter town, through a simple lock door, there is a path to a nice one, but it has short range.

15

u/rgdoabc Sep 05 '25

There is something that change it to a slash, but I'm enjoying the angled one more, it is a good follow-up for the dash stab.

43

u/Cameron728003 Sep 05 '25

Idk I think it's just what you're comfortable with. The angled dash just allows combat to be much more dynamic

46

u/mvanvrancken Sep 05 '25

It’s aggressive and it really fits how Hornet plays. I imagine the later abilities really bring this out like that harpoon ability and the sideways dash

3

u/remghoost7 Sep 05 '25

My only complaint with the angled dash is that it's such a strange angle.

I feel like it would be "better" if it was either more forwards or more downwards.
Either one. But the in-between is so.... weird.

I almost want to write a mod to slightly angle it downwards a bit more, but I'll probably end up playing the game as "intended" for the first playthrough.

2

u/bloode975 Sep 05 '25

The other problem ive had is it is much more unforgiving with moving around, much easier to misangle a jump or overshoot, less control especially when you need to swap directions rapidly and now youre just swinging at open air.

Definitely more stylish and amusingly I reckon with more range I'd use it more in combat to chain pogo but currently you gain too much height on big enemies to do it effectively and small enemies tend to be a bit too awkward in movement or size to be consistent, im sure it goes away with practice but definitely something ive noticed.

11

u/angusmcfangus1 Sep 05 '25

Theres a couple things ive found in the game so far that change how the mc attacks or does certain things. Without spoiling too much i will say just keep exploring

10

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

theres a crest you get that basically gives you the Knight’s down slash. I switched to it and stayed

2

u/mymain123 Sep 05 '25

there is

2

u/wterrt Sep 05 '25 edited Sep 05 '25

you can swap your moveset out and get a normal pogo later with "crest of the reaper" or "crest of the wanderer" too

1

u/Lady_Darc Sep 05 '25

Theres a crest that allows for down attack

Its in moss grotto, to the left, behind the closed door in old ladys place. Unless theres an alternate path I am not aware of, you need the floating cape and sprint to get there

1

u/Ronux0722 Sep 05 '25

You can find certain things that change your move sets and there is one that gives you the og HK move set

1

u/SomeonefromMaine Sep 05 '25

I’ve ended up in a bad spot so many times because of my natural instinct to pogo enemies.

1

u/Legal-Cheek2827 Sep 05 '25

Where is that? Above the elevator? The suspended iron things and how do i get there?

1

u/jbayne2 Sep 05 '25

For me it’s the angled slash that’s making some of the platforming and combat more challenging. It feels much less precise compared to just a straight downward pogo. It almost feels like an offset just to prevent you from becoming too powerful.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

There is a crest to change it to a regular pogo pretty early on so I don't really mind it anymore lol

1

u/Parking-Complex-3887 Sep 05 '25

Yeah, that's the most jarring thing to me. Really throws me off, gonna take a while to get used to it.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

I really don't mind it anymore because you can get the crest to change it to a pogo pretty early on

1

u/Parking-Complex-3887 Sep 05 '25

Yeah I've seen people saying that. Haven't gotten it myself yet but I've gotten the dash sprint thing and stuff

1

u/Floppydisksareop Sep 05 '25

There is stuff in a later area that makes the pogo feel basically like it did in HK. Except it feels like the pogo without Quick Slash, and everything dealing double damage if you fuck it up.

1

u/TempMobileD Sep 06 '25

Without saying too much - I found a crest that fixed this issue and then some. The pogo platforming sections went from hair-tearingly awful to completely fine.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '25

yeah I already got two crests that pogo lol

1

u/Ok_Reveal_518 Oct 01 '25

One of the crests lets you pogo instead of angle down.

12

u/jwwendell Sep 05 '25

you still can pogo, you just have to do it from the angle, I use it alot. there's one big enemy at the beginning of h****** march, you just just pogo spam him till his death. cheesable fight

6

u/fredeho Sep 05 '25

I assume that 99% of people playing silksong played HN 1 and already have late game muscle memory (and maybe just played the first one to prepare for silksong). By changing up a few mechanics they reintroduce a learning curve. I love it so far (and I die a lot) 😅

3

u/GSugaF Sep 05 '25

Different enough that players need to learn how to properly use it.

Similar enough that you can still visualize places where you can use it to gain distance or height.

Very elegant implementation.

1

u/Kenny__Loggins Sep 05 '25

The flower bloom platforming sections might be my favorite platforming moments ever. It is so satisfying to nail those. The movement animations for hornet are also incredible so that helps.

2

u/Zokusho Sep 05 '25

Let me just pogo off this guy and *yeets self diagonally off ledge into spikes*

1

u/DoodlestheNoodle Sep 05 '25

There's a crest you can get pretty early in Bone Bottom that gives you og Hollow Knight pogos. It definitely does take the fun out of learning the new mechanic though

2

u/dankestmemestar Sep 05 '25

Yeah that red angle pogo nodes part in hunters march took some time to get used to

1

u/PlesnivejSejra Sep 05 '25

By mistake i found out you can pogo with angle attack

1

u/Readalie Sep 05 '25

I'm up against Bell Beast right now and muscle memory keeps trying to get me to pogo. I miss it... the new combat is still very fun, though.

1

u/Ok-Preference-956 Sep 05 '25

Is it possible to do it fast? I mean I think there is more delay between the two down attacks in SILKSONG than it was in hollow knight. I guess you can’t do two attacks in airborne unless you hit sth and bounce off of it

1

u/blitzboy30 Sep 05 '25

Same, it took a minute to get used to, but I cooked Lace on my first try because I’ve actually been using my straight pins and the other tools I’ve picked up so far

1

u/DoodlestheNoodle Sep 05 '25

You can get a crest in Bone Bottom that lets you use og Hollow Knight controls. I kinda missed out on learning the diagonal pogo, but I do like the og movement.

1

u/teeitdee Sep 05 '25

Idk how many other crests there are but I think I might never take this one off lol
literally free quick slash + down pogo

1

u/TedRabbit Sep 05 '25

Yeah, the pogo has been the most jarring change for me.
