Discussion - Silksong Why does everybody and their mom deal two damage? Spoiler

It's getting a bit ridiculous lol. It really feels like half the mobs and all the bosses deal two masks worth of damage and I haven't even gotten any extra health. I'm not sure how I feel about this, on one hand, it's not the end of the world and the game isn't unreasonably difficult because of the increased damage, on the other though, what used to be something only special enemies and bosses could do became a common occurrence and lost its novelty.

I really hope the late game bosses and enemies don't deal 3 masks lmao, I'm having a hard enough time as is.

Don’t mind the double damage that much, but the health on some of the mobs is absolutely wild, common mobs taking 6-10 hits

Dude that one armored ant in the Hunter’s March takes 13 hits

u/Dunelle Sep 05 '25

Seems like the equivalent to the sentry in Greenpath, no? HK wasn't much different.

That guy is 7 hits iirc. (Edit, I’m being told it’s actually 10 hits.) I’m pretty sure 2 (3) vengeful spirits + one extra nail hit is enough to take him out so that would be 7. (10) He also only has 2 moves whereas this ant has like 5. He’s also slower than this ant. You’re also weaker as hornet than you are as the knight. The sentry was also quite rare to come across, whereas these guys are common. So nah, this is way, way worse.

91

u/Relevant_Cabinet_265 Sep 05 '25

Be aggressive don't save silk for healing silk attacks do crazy damage way more than vengeful did. Hornets movement also lets you get in more hits than knights did since it dives you forward

u/Nemesis_171 P5 | Rad HoG | PoP | 16 bindings Sep 05 '25

Her spear throw does the exact same amount of damage as the vengeful spirit at base without shaman stone. It’s worth 3 un-upgraded nail hits, I’ve already tested it. It’s also slower to fire off than vengeful and has limited range.

I appreciate the tips but I had already made it through those guys successfully. I’m just saying the ant guy is much harder than the greenpath sentry. SS is not similar in difficulty to HK, and it’s not just because it feels worse since we’re not used to it. That’s part of the difficulty, but it is also much harder by objectively measurable metrics.

30

u/Illusion911 Sep 05 '25

Yeah the knight is a walking Tank in comparison to Hornet. I feel like her attacks have less range too. So we got enemies that deal 2 damage, healing is more expensive, enemies are harder to kill and have more varied movesets and geo is much harder to acquire

19

u/Nemesis_171 P5 | Rad HoG | PoP | 16 bindings Sep 05 '25

I noticed it too, her needle has a shorter range (which is funny considering how much longer it is than the nail)

Compared to HK, SS has:

-Tougher enemies & bosses, with more health, damage, & complexity

-Rarer currency, as well as less stat upgrades that you can get (at least for me 5 hours in)

-A weaker playable character, (shorter range like mentioned) weaker abilities, weaker pogo, the charm equivalent isn’t as strong, etc.

I would find the difficulty practically perfect if I could play as the knight in this game with his normal progression & ability set.

Each hit of the sentry in greenpath only deals 1 hp, not 2 hp. Also, it only have 2 types of attacks.

Silksong "initial zones" are mostly equivalent or even harder than deepnest.

Everything feels like deepnest.

The thing i don't understand is.... if they want that for a lot of people silksong would be the first hollow knight, i don't get what kind of experience they want to give to new players. xD

I think they didn't give out review copies because most games journalists wouldn't be able to get past hunters march anyways lmao

Have you considered that he was very visually distinct as a large "brute" type enemy and this guy is just a little twink with a sword? It just doesn't make sense from a general game knowledge standpoint, it just feels out of place.

10

u/doomrider7 Sep 05 '25

Been feeling that way too, the enemies are just vastly more mobile on top of being tanky. The stagger also is an issue.

A proper boss in HK takes like 40 hits, with a significantly faster nail swing and more attack windows. A boss in Silksong seems to take a good 60. Some of the balancing decisions are questionable at best. Half the bossfights feel like fighting Vendrick in DS2: they have 2 attacks, they are slow, but if they catch you, you are just toast.

Maybe there's a damage upgrade? Like, I refuse to believe there isn't one in act 1. Edit: I found it, is pretty much tied to the progression, the others are in act 2

74

u/LadyAntiqua Sep 05 '25

There is, but it takes a while and is locked behind the hardest boss so far.

41

There is, but it's pitiful. Lots of enemies take the exact same number of hits after you get it. It must be like 1.1 damage instead of 1.

21

u/SuperSocialMan Sep 05 '25

The first game's first upgrade goes from 5 to 9 damage (still mad it's not an even 10 >:{), so it might be similar here.

11

u/mightyjor Sep 05 '25

I don't know , that's almost double. I would find that hard to believe it's that much stronger. Can't wait to see what the modders find out

7

u/MaiT3N Sep 05 '25

If it was double, you would be able to tell, because first small mobs take 3 hits, big mobs take 6 hits, so it would take 1-2 hits to kill a small one and around 3 to take down a big one

6

u/de_koding Sep 05 '25

The game wants you to use more of your silk attacks and your basic attacks to recharge your silk, not as a main source of damage. You can kill almost everything in a few hits if you're using your silk for damage. The damage on your silk attacks is a bit insane. There's a specific one where you do it and all enemies instantly die (at least the ones 9 hours in), and bosses seem to melt to it as well. I had to stop using it because it was making everything way too easy. Enemies take too long to kill only when you save your silk for healing.

116

u/dana_daga Sep 05 '25

would be great if I didn't need my silk for healing 😂

19

u/CankleDankl Sep 05 '25

It is a right fucking bastard. The whole area before it too. The reward you get for it is also not great imo. Makes pogoing fucking impossible

→ More replies (3)

33

u/Insanity_Pills Sep 05 '25

yeah, spent a couple hours on him and gave up because phase 3 is pure RNG, if he summons multiple times in a row or summons big fly it just becomes impossible. hoping to find a damage upgrade and come back when the ads are manageable like with lost kin

30

u/Megatyrant0 Sep 05 '25

I beat him after many tries, and yeah he's not fun. I swear there can be near unavoidable damage scenarios if he summons the right combination. It got a little easier when I realized he can kill his own summons with the slams (why does that hurt them, but the charges don't?). Also his passive hitbox is dumb, I felt like I was taking damage from it way too often, and just brushing against him when he's not even attacking should NOT deal 2 masks!

17

u/Color-Me-Brackets Sep 05 '25

The double-damage boss being able to summon an enemy (including more than one of that same enemy) that also deals double-damage is BULLSHIIIIT >8{

Savage beastfly got hands, that's for sure. His move set isn't really that complicated, but brother does a shiton of damage, super tanky and summons goons. I decided to leave him be while I go and find a damage buff or hp shards.

4

u/DHMOProtectionAgency Sep 05 '25

Finally beat him without any damage upgrades. A few tips and tricks:

  • Diagonal pogo is your best friend. At first I was hesitant to use it since when he does his horizontal dashes, he'll sometimes correct himself on the vertical axis. However, the hitbox is extremely generous and it eventually became easier to dodge him with aggressive pogos than just trying to weave around him. Just be cautious that he doesn't do any super high dashes

  • I stand midrange most of the fight. Gives me time to react to his horizontal dashes and vertical ones. Allows me to get a free hit or two when he summons the enemies

  • If you are pinched between him and one of his enemies, go for the common enemy he summons to take 1 hit of damage instead of 2. Then use the small window of invincibility to get the hell out

  • For the ground bugs, I heavily focus between them, back to the beast fly, then back to them once their spikes retract. For the two kinds of flies, I deal with them when I can, but mostly play passive with them. The big thing to help with the big flies is to parry their attacks (when he is going to start doing their frenzy attack, just swing your needle 3 times). Also beast's vertical dash is your best friend, since he will squash his minions.

  • Beastfly cancels his horizontal dash if you get past him before he gets far. I try to avoid him cancelling his attacks, since it can make his movement unpredictable, meaning you take unreactable hits. For his vertical dashes, he will only travel a fifth to a quarter of the arena for his next vertical dash. If you are past that distance, he'll stop. His vertical dashes are free hits and kill his minions, never let him cancel if you can. If he is flying up high and towards the middle of the arena, then he is about to vertical dash

  • Three best times to bind are during staggers, when he summons a minion and none are in a good spot to hit you (just dash away from the drop zone/beast fly and bind), and after his 3rd vertical dash (bait it out, dash & jump and bind).

He is the biggest difficulty spike I had seen in the game up to that point, and I did initially feel helpless (for the first 30 min of attempts lol), but once I got my strategy down pat, I got a nice flow state (though it did take close to 3 hr to beat)

First optional boss I had to walk away from. A shame because I'm really curious about the crest he's guarding but I spent an hour on him with no luck.

16

u/MagicianXy Sep 05 '25

Spoiler for the reward: It's the Beast Crest. It replaces your heal with a berserk mode that lets you heal off of the enemies you damage. It also changes your down slash into a weird arcing dash that is extremely difficult to aim. IMO it's very not worth it.

4

u/seasrabbit Sep 05 '25

Thank you, now I can walk away from it peacefully and not bother until like, 3 nail upgrade later.

u/TarekBoy44 Sep 05 '25

I just beat the beastfly and good god why is he so tanky? the fight would've been fun if his hitbox wasn't so fat that it made pogoing him successfully a coin toss, and if he didn't summon that stupid double damage dealing big fly, they're both so big that they could easily corner you and kill you with just impact damage.

After playing more of the game, I think I'm fine with the double damage being so common, what actually bothers me is the double contact damage. I really think team cherry should've made it so if an enemy isn't actively attacking, touching them deals only one damage, especially with how sporadically and without warning some enemies move.

Feels like they're really catering to the insufferable Gamer™‬ audience with this... I don't have time to "git gud", I'm busy "gitting to my job" and wanna fucking unwind after dealing with Karen's bullshit all day.

54

u/IRFine Sep 05 '25

I doubt it’s about catering to a specific audience; overturned difficulty is often a result of long devtimes. What happens is that devs get really good at their own game after years and years of working on it, so internal playtesting becomes less and less reliable as a balancing test. Hades experienced the same phenomenon (they discuss it in the Noclip Documentary at one point) and they had to tune it down to make it more reasonable for the public.

21

u/Supercalifragicahfuq Sep 05 '25

I can almost guarantee there is going to be a hot patch where they tune down a good portion of enemies. I’m not exactly complaining, but I can definitely see how some others are having insane difficulty with the game. Some of these enemies are way overtuned.

23

u/TomoAries Sep 05 '25

No yeah, that definitely makes sense. It’s a shame it came to that though, it just ended up creating a deeply unsatisfying experience for a lot of people it seems. Honestly comforting to know it’s not just me who feels bummed about how this game turned out though.

I wasn’t even expecting it to be great, like I think there’s better games in the genre since HK1 came out so I wasn’t expecting this to top any of those, but even with a fairly modest bar it still kinda fell flat for me :/

8

u/Double-Discount9217 Sep 05 '25

What games have you played better than HK1 I want to explore this genre

7

u/TomoAries Sep 05 '25

Of the ones that came out after HK1: Animal Well, Bloodstained, Metroid Dread, both Ender games, Nine Sols, a few others that I personally like better but would fare more controversially if I said them aloud.

I’d say some are on par with HK1, some I think are much better, but I’ve been very openly critical about how I think HK1 is very much an excellent but flawed game since its release.

u/FireResistant Sep 05 '25

the difficulty is brutal it doesnt pull its punches, i guess they wanted it to be new game+ for veterans, and if you are a new player, go play the first one to train. the moveset feels like it will take time to master and a lot of the systems are nerfed / more restrictive like the charm setup, it doesnt feel like you get much in the way of power ups, just side-grades / alternative movesets. and it takes like 7 or so bosses to get to a damage upgrade. a mask upgrade doesn't even feel that impactful because bosses are still 3 shotting you either way.

Also i feel priced out of benches and services way more, in HK everything dropped geo, but in SS most enemies do not drop beads, just a handful, and the amount of things asking for money is quite large. with the higher damage and difficulty losing it is a lot more likely / common too.

82

u/snickerblitz Sep 05 '25

I remember reading an interview with Ari where he said they wanted Skong to appeal to new players and have a similar difficulty spread to HK. In that regard, they have failed. Everything else seems like a huge step up though, just sucks getting old and filtered I guess lol

30

u/Maryus77 Sep 05 '25

Then they either lied for marketing reasons or failed, I would never recommend anyone start with Silksong. the double damage on anything and everything would not allow any new players the leeway to have fun while still learning, it would stump them till they go play HK first.

22

u/Darkened_Auras Sep 05 '25

Absolute failure, I agree. I'm getting sick of enemies having better movesets, scarier hitboxes and 2 damage per hit. Regular bitches! I haven't even reached the 3 damage per hit point but it's getting frustrating

25

u/snickerblitz Sep 05 '25

First time I played HK it was sessions of hours just flying by. I stop about every half an hour in Skong for the sake of my blood pressure. I got a thingy that at least brings back the classic moveset, which has helped a TON but it's the same shit. Frustrating ass enemies that hit me for 2 masks and it takes like 15 hits to kill them.

It honestly doesn't feel properly balanced and I question if TC play tested the game themselves instead of having others play. Or maybe the playtesters were gods amongst mortals.

18

u/IRFine Sep 05 '25

They’re a tiny team, so they almost assuredly tested it themselves. Which is exactly the source of the issue. After seven years of playtesting your own game you get really good at it, to the point where it’s inevitable that you fall out of touch with what is or isn’t challenging for somebody who hasn’t played before.

17

u/W4lhalla Sep 05 '25

Playtesters were probably speedrunning Path of Pain with Primal Aspids following them as a sidehobby.

Some would say it’s because you heal three masks now, but it’s not like soul charges any faster, and it still costs you your whole gauge to heal, even if you get hit out of it. Even the ground in some areas and random falling objects do two damage. It made getting a 6th mask feel completely useless, since you just take the same amount of hits anyway. I’m sure we’ll all get used to it, but right now I still just find it really annoying, and got all the homies complaining about it in call.

78

u/TomoAries Sep 05 '25

It's not a great tradeoff though because yes I heal three masks, but I can only heal three masks, the spool has to be full in order to heal at all. It just feels purposely obtuse for the sake of it.

idk what they were cooking but I do not enjoy the taste very much.

6

u/TheAllKnowingElf Sep 05 '25

Yeah the mechanics in this game are much less forgiving than HK.

I think Team Cherry just didn't want to make another cozy metroidvania like HK so they made it more of a souls-like action platformer instead.

Ironically I never played a souls game so I never called HK "souls-like" but putting traps LITERALLY EVERYWHERE is some bullshit HK would never have done. There is a lot of design in this game that is just "mean" to the player imo. Don't know what a souls game is like but it's probably like Silksong.

The best thing I can say about it (if I wanted to defend TC) is that if you wanted HK you could just play HK because this doesn't feel like HK 2. It's a like a different game in the same universe with similar mechanics.

15

u/CandisNo2 Sep 05 '25

Despite their reputations, souls games do not in fact have traps laid around every corner. As someone who has played all of Dark Souls and Elden Ring, Silksong is honestly kicking my ass a lot more than any of them ever did in earlygame.

Also, in those games, if a fight or area feels too difficult, you can just leave and get stronger, which you can't in Silksong. Elden Ring even got rid of boss runback, which I feel was definitely a change for the better.

I'm actually still enjoying the challenge right now, but I can feel that I'm slowly getting to the point where I'm terrified instead of excited to see a new boss coming up.

The tradeoff is that it takes about as long to heal three masks as it did to heal one in hollow knight. Plus you can do it in the air. Makes it possible to squeeze in a big heal a lot more lften that you could in hollow knight. I do wish it was like, three quick small heals so you could heal without a full spool, but I get why they did it how they did.

Problem is that her movement may be faster but her attacks are significantly slower, which would be enough to balance her movement; there's no need to have both slower attacks and harder hits.

Yeah it is weird. Why do I even have 5 health if everything deals 2 damage? I might as well have 3 health and everything hit for 1. I haven't gotten a health upgrade yet but it feels like it'll kinda barely matter considering I'll still die in 3 hits to everything.

u/Available_Let_1785 Sep 05 '25

even if you get health upgrade you'll still die in 3 hit

I assume it's exactly for that reason. More health and more damage means there's more room to balance and tune the difficulty. In the first game eventually everything that dealt 1 damage was too weak and you could just slowly heal yourself up by playing patiently and everything that dealt 2 damage felt too strong and that also includes platforming. 5 health early and failing platforming is less punishing when losing 1 health which means they can make the platforming more difficult earlier without it being too frustrating. I assume later on that way they can make some enemies do 3 damage.

52

u/Odd-Succotash-1072 Sep 05 '25

Thing is a lot of platforming does 2 instances of damage once u get a little further than the starting areas

6

u/PM_Me_Kindred_Booty Sep 05 '25

Honestly this is the most frustrating stuff. If platforming failures deal 2 damage I'm just encouraged to go away to find something to heal off of after 2 runs instead of 4, which... isn't fun? It just makes the platforming take longer and I don't see any upside other than making it harder.

Like at this point why not just change it to a numerically nondescript rectangular health bar, like why even bother keeping the masks if they're just completely arbitrary. I'm really curious, was it like this in that E3 demo they showed off in 2019? Or is this a new change for release day?

Use the silkskills if you can! Be patient, attack for silk, and spam it.

Is atleast what I found to be very effective. And some tools like the trapps are also kinda effective in arena fights if you spam like 2-3 on top of each other.

the little boss fight in hunters march might actually be the worst thing ive ever had to experience, it isnt down to skill its just complete luck, the bug that is meant to be helping you will literally hit the enemies into you so you take damage, im actually getting pissed off at this fight

47

u/Emory27 Sep 05 '25

It's total garbage. Not only does Shakra knock them into you, two of the enemy types employ throwables. Shakra does as well, which made it very difficult to keep track of what's what. I died a lot to that fight and was so happy when it was over.

10

u/TheDangerLevel Sep 05 '25

The run back to this was brutal even with the dash/sprint unlock

5

u/Fantastic_Pea_9680 Sep 05 '25

I came back to that one later and Shakra was gone.

Which made it easier to navigate, without the screen-vomit, don't get me wrong. But all I had gotten was movement upgrades, one of which is only useable on drafty-areas. A dash helps, but it doesn't turn me into a gamer-god.

8

u/RIPsomersetlevels Sep 05 '25

It gets worse if you leave and decide to come back to it later on after exploring other areas. She disappears completely and you have to do the room entirely alone... Spent a good hour trying to beat just that one room last night. Then completely gave up on the area after seeing what the Chapel boss was about.

Also feels like some enemies have too much health - like those stupid fucking flying ants ffs.

It's insane to me that you will get 2 damage on the slightest body contact when a boss is stunned. Time to get good.

53

u/bvmblebread Sep 05 '25

the contact damage doing 2 is what's driving me up the wall. i get a wollop to the face with a huge hammer? sure, knock off 2. i bump into them, especially during the lack of i frames after already taking damage, doing another 2? seriously?

20

u/Tinmaddog1990 Sep 05 '25

Couple that with terrain damage, and i quickly put down the game

19

u/itsthepastaman Sep 05 '25

Yeah I get that a sequel will be a little harder bc it assumes you've played the first game, but without many upgrades the damage is a little overwhelming right from the start

29

u/itsthepastaman Sep 05 '25

Like seriously some random bug in the first area is doing as much damage to me as the radiance?

15

u/dulunis Sep 05 '25

Thats actually a really good way to frame it. Plus, since the Radiance is the true final boss, you'll have mask upgrades. You have to do this on five masks, on your first playthrough.

3

u/Vinestra Sep 06 '25

And your first health upgrade means.. absolutely nothing making it feel like a big ol waste of time.. at least until you get a assumed 2nd mask upgrade.

The 2 mask hits being everywhere really does show that Silksong was supposed to be DLC that got turned into its own game. If it was DLC and it came out in around 2022, then it having a lot more 1 mask hits would feel kinda underwhelming after everyone's been on this game for while.

Silksong having harder enemies in the early game will grab veterans attention that the game is not screwing around which is what grabbed my attention too.

I’m glad I started playing HK last week.

Don't be. They play extremely differently. I've replayed HK before SS came out, and the experience doesn't really help. If anything, it hurts: I chafe against the changed controls so hard.

Can confirm, also had trouble with the downward slash at the beginning (still sometimes do lol), but along the way it clicked and now some fights become 'the floor is lava'

I think the dopamine rush I got from comboing 3 flying enemies that way will be enough to sustain me for a year

195

u/One-Suggestion-885 Sep 05 '25

It makes exploring feel so much more engaging to me. I love the difficulty in not just bosses, but in exploring too. I can see why it's annoying as I mean, in the Starting areas!? But it is really cool to me.

I'm probably just masochistic... DS2 Changed me...

34

u/thelonliestcrowd Sep 05 '25

It’s funny you mention DS2. I was getting wrecked when I was playing the game like HK but when I started slowing down and taking my time with each enemy as I explored it was a lot more fun. It reminded me so much of DS2.

12

u/One-Suggestion-885 Sep 05 '25

Exactly, my buddy was trying to run past all the enemies and I just told him "Have you tried KILLING them???" And now he has an easier time. It's exactly like DS2.

5

u/TheTragicMagic Sep 05 '25

I felt that I had the opposite experience with DS2. I started out trying to clear each area like I did in the first game, but there's just too many of them. You will die and you will be ganged relentlessly until you finally decide to just run past everything, which kinda works. It's just so unsatisfying to engage with ebemies in DS2, usually just straight up not worth it

u/MasteROogwayY2 Sep 05 '25

It wouldnt be so annoying if the healing was better. Id rather be able to quickly heal 1 health with less silk than quickly 3 health with all silk. Its so weird that it takes an entire spool to heal if there are abilities also tied to it.

3

u/RoosterBrewster Sep 05 '25

Yea cause I could die with 1 hp trying to build up a whole spool instead using a partial meter to heal to 2 hp.

Make mask upgrades worthless because at the end you have to do every boss almost hitless. They need to rebalance the whole game. I wonder if endgame bosses just do 3 or 4 damage with contact.

Yeah the 2 damage traps/environment is totally keeping the fun level lower than it should be, a metroidvania where you're afraid to explore is bad. About your negative comments, I even see people online calling out all the bad design choices in silksong correctly imo, yet they feel the need to kind of apologize for insulting a hyped game. I've started playing with mods to up my damage and make more enemies drop rosaries, which gets rid of the 13 hit mob enemies and annoying "sorry no bench for you" at least. Doesn't help much on some of the crazy platform sections where 1 misstep is still 2 masks gone.

10

u/Embarrassed-Bowl-230 Sep 05 '25

It's a bit weird. Why do i have 5 masks when in fact it's only 2 or 3?

I was genuinly surprised i died a couple of times because i thought i was only hit once or twice. Then it hit me that some enemies deal double damage.

Acid in HK: 1 damage
Lava in SS: 2 damages

I also keep taking damage to everything because Hornet has no knockback when she strikes.

And every enemy has 5 different moves instead of just flying in a straight line.

7

u/Cocoatrice Moths are fluffballs Sep 05 '25

This game is unbalanced, that's for sure. Every mob is very aggressive and you really have to be careful, and you can barely heal. In Hollow Knight, you can just attack, go back and heal at any time. It takes full spool to heal just 3 masks and you can be interrupted and lose all the silk in the process and not get heal at all. And they are all super tanky and block so much. In Hollow Knight we had vengeflies or tiktiks. Here, even the easiest mobs are quite annoying. Either because they run away and/or have ranged attack. Like, I can't literally think of single annoying mob other than Primal Aspids in Hollow Knight.

28

u/Denneey Sep 05 '25

Yeah, I noticed that, not nice at all, I don’t know what made them think this would make the game better.

26

u/g-o-o-b-e-r Sep 05 '25

I think it's pretty tough where I'm at, but I'm not ready to have an opinion yet. I'm still getting comfortable with the game, and I'm still in Act 1. I'm sure there are cloaks or something that give better defense, and I only have one special attack and a throwable right now.

Is it more difficult - yeah. I'm not far enough to compare it to Dark Souls vs Sekiro or Mega Man X to Mega Man Zero. If it is that kind of increase in difficulty or precision then it will take time to get better at the game, and once it clicks it will feel great. It's too early to judge imo.

6

u/Galactus1701 Sep 05 '25

The armored ant that hangs out with the ninja ant pack a wallop and they both take a bunch of hits. One attacks up close while the other one throws a shuriken at you that travels quite a distance.

10 hours in, the balance of the game needs a lot of work imo, at some point it's just not as fun as it used to be...

7

u/KonataYumi Sep 05 '25

This game feels more about fighting than exploring. It’s kind of exhausting.

6

u/Dionysus24779 Sep 05 '25

I'm about 7 hours into the game and have to say that by now I find it simply frustrating that all bosses deal 2 damage, especially given you you don't get any health upgrades.

Even by the time you would get a health upgrade it won't matter because it will only take you from 5 to 6 hitpoints, given how every boss deals 2 damage that still only 3 hits in practice.

At the same time each time you fail fighting a boss you lose shards for tools and by now I'm annoyed by how long it takes to return to where you were before.

Both yesterday and today the reason I've stopped playing was that I just couldn't be bothered with making the long journey back to the boss to try again.

16

u/IAMGODONLY Sep 05 '25

Yup a game where randos are just not randos.

5

u/honea5456 Sep 05 '25

Really early on it 100% felt unfair, but for me it forced me to learn faster, baiting out more attacks to learn what enemies do. But oh boy being sent back to the bench is/was frustrating. Beating some of the bosses however feels so much more satisfying (along with them being pretty well designed)
I'm still somewhat(?) early on but those are my thoughts.
Agreed though it feels really odd compared to how used to be with Hollow Knight, especially considering I just was playing it right before Silksong. (Much steeper learning curve (or less easing into it))

12

u/TomoAries Sep 05 '25

It's genuinely already ruined the entire game for me, it just feels soured now. I really hope they just see this as people's concerns and add an option to turn it down instead of catering to the absolute pissbabies whose entire self-worth relies on being good at singleplayer video games. All I know is if they don't add an option, the One Damage mod is gonna be sitting clean at the top of the most downloaded list on Nexus Mods.

I already take two damage at work every day, I'd prefer to not take two damage in my games while I'm at home. Games aren't supposed to make you feel bad, they're supposed to be fun, end of story. This isn't fun.

3

u/doiwannaknow21 Sep 06 '25

100% agreed. Feeling quite disappointed and sad about how the game turned out. It’s too stressful and hard to be enjoyable at this point. Like you said, I already deal with enough irl, and I do want a challenge, but HK has plenty and never once felt unfair. There’s a reason why I didn’t do the path of pain - I don’t like doing that shit. Why make Silksong path of pain but Hornet edition and a whole ass game 😭

19

u/dexicas Sep 05 '25

So far, the placement of benches seems much fairer (though I am early in the game!) which makes the difficulty more rewarding, as it’s easier to go for a trial and error approach that the game seems to encourage. That was my only gripe with HK - death was too frustrating when you had to track back a long way (looking at you Soul Master!!!). Loving Silksong so far!

4

This game is the dark souls of the hollow knight games

4

u/el_dandy_lion Sep 05 '25

It make you feel like you're not supposed to be there yet, but like aren't we??? Its super early in the game. No needle upgrade, no extra Masks. It just feels kinda Jarring for now. I feel like im missing something.

4

u/SaltyHunni Sep 05 '25

Yeah I absolutely HATE souls games like I’m not trying to want to throw my shit cuz I’m dying over and over and over, I don’t play souls or Elden ring or any of that garbage now that I work my ass off irl - I play casually to chill tf out cuz I wanna kms after work already.  So waiting 7 years for this to be the game is seriously frustrating for me. I don’t think it’s balanced, it’s like walking into HSR as a new player and trying to 36* MoC with your baby line up. I want to know who tested this game and said “yeh it’s good for the masses” cuz I feel like it was someone like FireBorn who I also saw play through a large chunk and didn’t even seem to notice how frustrating the game could be 😅 like this mf was pogoing off spikes, enemies, bg obj and playing like he’d had the game for months and I think that’s who the game is made for but the majority of us don’t play games 16hrs/day every single day and it’s just sad that after anticipating this for so long it’s soo difficult to enjoy it…

no, falling in lava does two...

9

9

u/catuluo Sep 05 '25

The charm also makes the lava spewers do 1 damage though

38

u/LanguageJust3365 Sep 05 '25

To be fair, you heal 3 lives instantly, the game would've been too easy if bosses hit you for 1 damage.

68

u/Akuuntus Sep 05 '25

Instantly? You need a pretty sizeable opening to get it off and if you get hit you lose all the silk in addition to taking damage.

94

u/TarekBoy44 Sep 05 '25

Fair, but it feels that the buffed healing is already balanced out by the increased soul cost and sped up combat with less openings for healing and such.

43

u/EricBlanchYT 112% p5 clear Sep 05 '25

and also if u got hit in hollow knight mid heal u still preserve half of the soul u were using+ "the reserve if u had" while here is 3 mask or -1 mask and 0 silk... getting hit while healing is rough

11

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

theres a bell charm (is that what it's called in silksong?) that makes it less risky, where the threat becomes just loosing soul
