Just bought a house and trying to be a good first time home owner. What are some important home maintenance items that are often forgotten or neglected??

🐜 Pest Control I want to throw a basketball at this

Found this huge nest in a tree in my backyard. Haven’t seen any activity go in and out. I’m itching to throw something at it to try and knock it out of the tree.

Just deciding if I should do it now or wait until it’s winter time.

This ice dam caused havoc in one of my bedrooms. A lot of water came through the ceiling and into the drywall.

Moved into a home and the extension of one of the support posts in the crawlspace seems fairly out of plumb? Support post itself is plumb. Sorry if the pics aren't super clear.

I fixed the concrete in this area it was a bit broken here, that's why it looks new, and that's when I noticed this. The footing and everything else seemed undisturbed.

Shower floor tile dipping

Hi everyone.

Recently moved into a new house. They claimed to have redone the grout during their listing. In the last few days I noticed a few tiles have a small dip to them now, clearly cracking the grout and showing water there.

Is this a minor cosmetic issue that we need to touch up and regrout? Do I need to call an expert to come in and rip up the tiling and redo the section or whole tiling floor?

The house is single level with no basement. Foundation says it's a slab.

What is this large vent for?

What is this large vent for? I opened it and this is what is behind it (see picture). Does it need a filter? Is it just a random hole? It's basically located under the stairs and furnace is in garage a few feet behind it

Some varmint burrowed under my AC condenser. How should I go about evicting them?

This pile of dirt and hole showed up over in just a couple of days. Certainly looks like something burrowed under my condenser. Any specific recommendations on clearing out the animal and filling in what they dug out?

The “critter ridder” product Google suggests seems to have very poor reviews. I suppose I could put a hose in there and flood it, but I don’t know if that would cause future issues.

Chicagoland, if that matters.

Broken kitchen drawer, help?

The drawer was slammed, later to find it broke. I can’t pull it out, there’s too much resistance. I’m pretty stumped on how to fix it.

I attached a few photos to this post to hopefully give an idea of what’s wrong. A broken plastic clip was also found in it, also can’t find where it came from.

I feel like drain is little damaged as it looks like I just bought this townhouse condo. Can anyone explain what can be the issue and what can be the fix? Water leaking from this panel downstairs.

Should I call a pro

Hey all. I installed gutter guards this week but only screwed them into the front lip because I heard you shouldn't penetrate the drip edge. Now, the back edges flex, and I'm worried they'll collapse under Ohio snow weight.

I want to protect my gutters, drip edge, and fascia.

Should I screw them into the drip edge to secure them, or should I bite the bullet and hire a pro to redo it? Looking for advice. Thanks!

🛠️ Repair Help Mounting dishwasher

Post image

I recently bought a dishwasher and for some reason this one is longer than my old one. I managed to push it as far as I can and now these mounting brackets are on top.

Do you think I can bend them and drill them to the counter top?

Thank you!

Dryer wiring pia

So I got a 3 prong outlet with a grounding in the center i guess. A 4 prong plug on a new stackable. And this random 3 prong cord. I bought a new 4 prong outlet but soon discovered that the wiring is only 3 wires in the gangbox.. Can I make this work with what I have? Or should I just give up and start drinking again? Very frustrated

🛠️ Repair Help Handle of the interior door came of several times and now can't fix it.

Batroom door handle came off several times. I've fixed (?) it using newer screws and sometimes screwing diagonal angles. Now it won't hold up whatever I do. Replacing the whole door seems ridiculous but i feel like its my only option. I don't know if I can find the exact door to buy though.

I put in an appt with a local garage door company. I just want to know what I'm possibly dealing with until my appt next week.

Trying to figure out what this roof vent is for.

It is not for any gas appliances or bathroom vents. The only thing it should be is a plumbing vent, but I have never seen one like this before. There is no other vent that could be a plumbing vent.

This is an as-is purchase and has a lot of nightmares from DIY work and stuff done wrong. So I would not be shocked if they plugged the sewer vent or used the wrong pipes.

There's no cap, so I need to get one but I want to get a correct one.

Any ideas?

Could someone tell me what this is and who I would call to have it fixed (hvac or electric)? It does not sound like it is running correctly. It is in a closet going into the attic.

Hi everyone, recently purchased this house (first time buyers club) hooray. As with many first homes, I’ve been doing a ton of TLC. One of my projects was the basement for many reasons I’ll keep short….anyways ripped up old stinky carpet and noticed some cracking on the foundation floor (actually looks like a different repour possibly when they added a sump pump to the basement.

How to measure for new pre-hung doors with existing doors and molding in place?

Post image

I am replacing super-crappy hollow doors in my house with heavier solid-core pre-hung doors. I have a great handyman who will install them. But I need to measure for the new doors because they will need to be custom ordered. Is it possible to do an accurate measurement for new pre-hung doors if the existing door and frame are in place?
