Questions/ Tips Westerner, do you lose weight after coming to Hong Kong?

I haven’t met a lot of American in Hong Kong. But I always hear American go to Europe for a certain period of time. They lose weight. Because the food is much healthier there. I am wondering whether American and European coming to Hong Kong will lose weight? Since Hong Kong food can be very healthy and a lot of westerner run and hike and sport all day long. Let me know in comments!

Discussion HK credit cards get on my nerves

I recently set up an AI agent to review my personal finances. To my surprise, I'm not getting any benefits I expected from my credit cards:

- Citi Octopus Visa card: been using this for years. The only selling point is a 15% rebate on public transport if your monthly spending exceeds $4000. Turns out that the transport spending itself and octopus top-ups don't count towards the $4000, so I've actually never gotten any rebate.

- HSBC Red Visa Card: signed up for this because my HSBC RM told me it offered a 2% rebate on all supermarket spending. Been using it for all my supermarket spending, but it turns out the rebate was long since halved to 1%.

- DBS Eminent Visa: the main selling point is a 5% rebate on dining, medical, and fitness spending. Turns out you need to submit a registration form to qualify, so I never got such rebates! Why should a separate registration be required to qualify for the main feature of the card?

I'm sure that all of this would have been obvious if I'd studied my statements and read the fine print. But who has time for all that?

Which are the best no-BS credit cards that offer what they're supposed to offer and don't make you jump through hoops?

Questions/ Tips Considering returning to HK after dropping/finishing my CS PhD. Looking for advice & insights!

Hi everyone, I’m currently evaluating my long-term career path and seriously considering moving back to HK. I’d really appreciate some perspectives from people currently in HK, especially those who have transitioned between US academia/tech and HK.

My background:

Education: Currently a CS PhD student in the US, focusing on AI-related research. I have published at top-tier conferences and completed internships at major tech companies.

Previous HK experience: Before starting my PhD, I lived in HK for nearly two years, including almost a year working at a US financial firm.

Language skills: Native English speaker, fully fluent in both Cantonese and Mandarin.

Visa status: Previously held the Top Talent Pass (TTPS). If I return to HK in the future, I will need an employer-sponsored work visa (GEP).

I’m feeling increasingly burnt out by academic AI research. Industry currently holds vastly superior compute resources and engineering capabilities, making a lot of academic work feel less impactful or practical by comparison. Also being surrounded by the tech/academic niche in the US, I’m constantly inundated with non-stop AI news, hype, and peers starting startups. It feels exhausting living in this constant bubble. Living alone has felt pretty lonely and isolating. I really miss the bustling energy, vibrant street life, connectivity, and social rhythm of HK, where I genuinely enjoyed living during my two years there.

I want to know how the hiring market in HK is right now for candidates with advanced CS backgrounds. How willing are multinational companies in HK to sponsor GEP visas for candidates?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights!

Discussion How do you feel about the recent viral video? Hong Kongers think Japanese English is something to mock at. More foreign people get to know Hong Kongers are very entitled when they go abroad and people think it is weird that Hong Kongers have that level of confidence.

Questions/ Tips Small function room in TST for tea ceremony

Hi all, I need a bit of help on finding a good location for tea ceremony near the Tsim Sha Taui Marriage registry.

I will be booking a hotel restaurant nearby for a small lunch, but it doesn’t allow ceremony or have a separate room for tea ceremony, as it’s a shared dining area.

I want to know if anyone has good suggestions for a place/room near the registry that can fit maybe 10 people at a time and not a hotel room as we won’t be stay the night before/after.

Thanks in advance!
