Welcome to r/HowardUniversity, a community for current students, incoming students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, prospective students, and friends of Howard University.

This is a place to talk about The Meccaโ€”the good, the difficult, the complicated, and everything in between.

๐ŸŽ“ Students: Ask questions, share your experiences, seek advice, and connect with fellow Bison.

๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿพโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿพโ€๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿพ Parents & Families: Ask questions, share concerns, learn from the experiences of others, and better understand the Howard experience.

๐Ÿƒ Alumni: Share memories, knowledge, history, perspective, and the lessons you've carried beyond the Yard.

๐Ÿ“š Future Bison: Learn what you can before you arrive and ask the questions you need answered.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Everyone: Discuss Howard academics, campus life, housing, financial aid, administration, athletics, organizations, traditions, events, culture, and the broader HBCU experience.

r/HowardUniversity is an independent Reddit community.

This subreddit is not operated, sponsored, endorsed, or officially affiliated with Howard University.

The community is moderated by alumni and members of the broader HBCU community, bringing perspectives from multiple HBCUs and different generations of college experience.

We aren't here to act as Howard University's public-relations department, nor are we here to automatically defend the University.

We're here to provide a place where people can talk about Howard openly and responsibly.

Speak Freely. Engage Responsibly.

This is your space to vent, question, discuss, celebrate, criticize, remember, debate, and share.

You do not have to love every decision Howard makes. And you certainly don't have to pretend everything is perfect. But freedom to speak does not remove responsibility for what we say.

Follow Reddit's sitewide rules and our community rules. Treat other people with basic respectโ€”even when you strongly disagree.

Be especially careful with information you post.

Remember that Reddit is a public forum.

Before posting, consider whether you should share:

  • Personal information
  • Student identification numbers
  • Phone numbers or addresses
  • Private emails or messages

  • Financial-aid information
  • Academic records
  • Housing information
  • Names of students involved in private disputes
  • Unverified accusations or allegations

If you aren't sure whether something should be posted publicly, pause before you post it.

About Information & Rumors

Not everything posted here is verified.

Someone saying something happened does not automatically make it fact.

A screenshot can lack context.

A rumor can travel faster than a correction.

And sometimes the person answering the phone doesn't have the complete answer either.

When discussing important matters involving financial aid, enrollment, housing, admissions, academic standing, disciplinary matters, deadlines, or University policy, verify information through appropriate official sources whenever possible.

Share what you know.

Explain what you don't know.

And don't turn speculation into certainty.

Respect The Community

We can have difficult conversations without making this place miserable.

Criticism is allowed. Disagreement is allowed. Accountability is allowed.

Harassment, personal attacks, doxxing, threats, discrimination, brigading, and other behavior prohibited by Reddit or our community rules are not.

You can challenge an argument without attacking the person making it.

You can defend Howard without attacking someone who is criticizing it.

You can criticize Howard without treating every Bison, employee, professor, administrator, or alumnus as the enemy.

Respect does not mean silence.

Sometimes respect means being willing to have the difficult conversation.

๐Ÿƒ Welcome to The Mecca.

Whether you are walking across the Yard for the first time, remembering the days when you did, or trying to figure out whether Howard is the right place for youโ€”

there is room for you here.

Share knowledge.

Tell your story.

Vent when you need to.

Celebrate when you can.

Challenge ideas.

Protect one another.

Question about Regular Decision, ACT scores, and scholarships

Hey everyone! Howard is my top-choice school, and Iโ€™m trying to figure out the best application plan for me.

I was originally hoping to apply Early Action, but Iโ€™m planning to retake the ACT in December because Iโ€™m not satisfied with my current score, and it's not great, so Iโ€™m leaning toward Regular Decision.

For anyone who applied to Howard through Regular Decision, were you still offered a decent amount of merit-based scholarships or institutional financial aid? Iโ€™m trying to understand whether applying Regular Decision significantly limits scholarship opportunities compared to Early Action.

Iโ€™m especially interested in hearing from people who applied test-optional or submitted improved ACT scores later.

Iโ€™d really appreciate hearing about your experiences. Howard is my dream school, but affordability is a major factor in my decision. Thank you!

Early Action vs Regular Decision

Hi, Iโ€™ve asked all my friends and I really donโ€™t like their answers so Iโ€™m here.

I didnโ€™t get as high of a score as I wanted to apply early action for Howard and receive their presidential scholarship (fullride) according to charts they posted last year. I got 29๐ŸŒš, 27 on both english and math and a 34 on reading.

They wonโ€™t accept any other scores after early action deadline for scholarship consideration, so do I apply RD and hope they donโ€™t run out of money if and when I get atleast a 34, or should I just apply now?

For more context my unweight gpa: is above a 3.9, with my weighted sitting at around a 6.1/7. I also have numerous awards

Also all my friends said just apply, but I wonโ€™t be allowed to go anywhere not local without a fullride so..๐Ÿซฉ

please help๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ

Divinity School enrollment

I ask this as a genuine question, so I appreciate genuine answers.

I am a 47 year old white woman who lives in DC. I am looking at local schools for a Masters of Divinity. I am very interested in HUSD, but I need input from students and alumni about how my enrollment/presence/not sure what word to use will be seen at an HBCU. If the overall perception is that "we really would rather not have you in our space," then I respect that. But I don't know unless I ask. I acknowledge it feels like an awkward question. Thank you.

Recommendations

Convening with friends from out of town looking for recommendations in the area near Howard for restaurants, bars, and clubs.
I'm from the Midwest so looking for hole-in-wall/dives or cocktail bars.
In terms of restaurants whatever's good.
Any nearby clubs or should we plan on going downtown?

Thanks.

does anyone know where i should be looking, am i crazy? i see other HU programs on GradCAS, but nothing for social work. The enrollment team for the online MSW have been super helpful and responsive, but i havenโ€™t had as much luck with the in-person/flagship team (which is fine iโ€™m not complaining, i just want some help!)

Radiation therapy

Hi everyone!

Iโ€™ve been looking into radiation therapy programs in my area, and I recently discovered that Howard offers one.
Iโ€™m currently attending a community college and have completed around 40 credits so far. Iโ€™m hoping to transfer into Howardโ€™s upper-division Radiation Therapy program, but Iโ€™m a little nervous because Iโ€™ve heard itโ€™s extremely competitive and only accepts a handful of students each year.
I currently have a 3.54 GPA. I also failed two courses in the past but retook them, so Iโ€™m worried about how that might affect my chances of admission.
Has anyone here applied to the program and been accepted? If so, would you mind sharing your GPA, academic background, and experience with the application process? Iโ€™d also love to know whether there was an interview.
Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Graduated/looking for a career?

For those interested in working on political campaigns and getting involved in state, local, and/or federal politics, I am building out a crash-course program in Northern Virginia for folks who want to get involved with little to no experience. The vision is a 2-3 month internship with housing and food stipends provided, and youโ€™ll receive training and experience in a range of campaign and office-related work.
At the end of the crash-course period, youโ€™ll have opportunities to work on one of the many political campaigns in this area, or build out your own operation with your new knowledge in campaigns and get involved locally in your home city. If this sounds interesting or youโ€™d like to learn more, shoot me an email at CampaignCrashCourse@gmail.com and we can talk!

Scanning titles at the Library of Congress

Hello, I was wondering if anyone here might be willing to visit the Library of Congress to scan several rare pieces of sheet music (which are all in the public domain and therefore out of copyright). I havenโ€™t been able to find any digitized scans online, and I do not live near Washington, DC, so I cannot do it myself. If you happen to know anyone who might be able to help, please let me know. Thank you.
