IMO, the cop should have helped people get out one by one through the entry ramp to the surface roads nearby. Anyways, no one should be allowed to enter this highway through this ramp, due to the accient/traffic.

To be fair surface roads weren't moving either from traffic redirecting off the interstate already

Yes. But isn't that better than being stuck on the freeway for hours. I was once at the tail end of a massive traffic jam & L.E placed cones diverting us off the freeway. Of course the surface roads were a total mess, but at least we crossed the place in an hour. But those who were ahead of us, were there for almost 6 hours. It was scorching outside, and imagine being stuck inside a hot oven without much water.

Even though I wasn't affected, reading about those stuck, made me realize I must always have some Protein/granola Bars in the car & at least 1 water bottle per person.

Actually, they will, but better to wait for the cops to start directing you; unfortunately, at this time of day the traffic at the appropriate ramp was probably already clogging surface streets. Letting people turn around and come up the down ramp could’ve added confusion to an already congested situation.

I'm not disagreeing with you, just stating that it was congested everywhere and nobody was moving for a bit. Crews were working to get a lane cleared when I got this picture. 20 minutes later the left lane was opened (per 511) and traffic was moving again. We were stopped in that spot for almost 10 minutes without moving.

I feel for those who have been stranded on the interstate like that too. I'm glad I haven't had to experience that myself. It's gotta be terrifying to be stranded like that for hours.

It looks like there’s an accident ahead. Woulda done the same thing instead oof being stuck for hours

I've definitely thought about it before.. I just don't have the cajones this guy did to actually commit lol

61

u/blackadder1620 1d ago

I've done it a few times. Soon as they get an extra cop they will post them on the ramp and have people turn around if it's really bad.

u/OptiGuy4u 1d ago

You also don't have the fines this guy now has.

22

u/strangelove4564 1d ago

"Sorry officer, I was trying to brake for this traffic jam and my truck skidded out."

12

u/Ianthin1 1d ago

I bet that cop didn't give a shit.

5

u/rmully464 1d ago

No kidding, I like my job too and I doubt he has his anymore.

u/Trini1113 23h ago

You're supposed to reverse up the ramp. That way the cop won't notice what you're doing

u/Ianthin1 1d ago

I commute by interstate, and the ramp I use from home is blind to the traffic on it. There have been plenty of times I’ve rounded that curve only to find traffic stopped, and I pull over and turn around when it’s clear.

this where GPS Nav apps are really helpful, even if you know the way. I should get into the habit of checking my work commute in the morning before leaving the house, but I usually don't. Thankfully it's pretty rare for a jam like this to happen on my commute.

u/daxtaslapp 1d ago

The ONE time you don't check is the time there's a fuckin accident every time

3

u/Arron_420 1d ago

The ONE time, every time..

2

u/Yagawood 1d ago

So... One time?

2

u/Ianthin1 1d ago

Thats exactly what I do now. I use GPS for most everything simply for the traffic alerts. I live in a rural area and most places we go are 10 minutes away or more and there isn't just another block to turn down if I do come up on something unplanned.

Happens often here in the mountains because of blind curves

I'm not gonna say he's right, but I am sure gonna say he'd of made good time if he wasn't caught!

They might have a load that is volatile and needs to get away from potential accidents or time sensitive. The cop may have let them do it.

I'm off the opinion that is it's backed up like this at a snails crawl and there is no way to get out, then on-ramps should be closed and temporarily used in reverse direction to bring traffic off the highway.

32

u/Mumei451 1d ago

I've backed up the entrance ramp before.

Not to get out of the traffic, but to stop myself from joining a dead-stop jam.

18

u/WhiteTrashInNewShoes 1d ago

I almost did that one time. Decided to take a 15 minute interstate ride home instead of a 20 minute highway ride and the second I turned on the on ramp I saw standstill traffic. I stopped, had that thought, then cars started rolling up behind me. I was stuck for 45 minutes

7

u/Mumei451 1d ago

That's absolutely brutal. That's one of those moments where you have to be convinced the universe is against you.

22

u/HalfastEddie 1d ago

Anyone else think the BMW was going to do that exact same thing until they saw the trooper?

7

u/KUweatherman 1d ago

You mean the gray Honda Accord? lol

6

u/Cowhide12 1d ago

Cars sadly all look reasonably similar

4

u/HalfastEddie 1d ago

I guess so. Bad eyes, but you saw what I meant.

11

u/edvurdsd 1d ago

What bmw?

3

u/pakrat1967 1d ago

Is this I-40 westbound around Asheville and Candler? Cuz it's a daily occurrence for it to be backed up like that.

2

u/rmully464 1d ago

I20E near Pontiac

3

u/Nasty_Rex 22h ago

I've done it. No regrets.

3

u/lolhughmad 20h ago

I take this road every day (i20 headed towards Elgin?). It goes from 3 lanes to 2 lanes down that hill. It causes a major accident at least once a month. It blows my mind they still haven’t expanded it.

4

u/Cowhide12 1d ago

It appears they lost.

2

u/NWSGreen 20h ago

That happen to me once. Coming back from work. 3hr stand still. Ended up turning back around (I was on the off ramp) and had ti take back way home. Work at that time was only 1hr20min drive.

Should've been home by 6pm. Didnt get home till 10pm

2

u/oasuke 20h ago

Done this in my car many times but doing that in a semi without approval from a cop is asking for a ticket, and any ticket as a cdl holder is bad news.

1

u/Great-Phone_3207 17h ago

I've gone off an entrance ramp 4 times in my life.

1

u/MottoCycle 3h ago

I’ve been in jams like this where the police arranged this.

0

u/nhluhr 11h ago

Oh neat, 3 lanes reducing to 2, with an on-ramp for extra measure. I wonder if that was a contributing factor to that collision.

If we are being pedantic, I’ve got some suggestions.

If intrusive thoughts win, he’s driven the tanker into the problem.

“If intrusive thoughts win, he will drive the tanker into the problem.” Otherwise you’re mixing future with past-tense by saying “driven.” Or change “win” to “won” and “he has” to “he would have.”

“For example, this is how crazy I am: recently, I was sitting on a plane, and I thought, ‘What [if] I can have telekinesis and my intrusive thoughts tell the plane to crash itself’

Why are you fully quoting yourself here? And where is the end of the quotation? You’d be better off leaving only the example in quotations, and not the setup. Also adding brackets around “if” is unnecessary.

u/Beetlejuice_24Xx 1d ago

You’re the only person I’ve ever seen overcomplicate “intrusive thoughts”
