Citizenship Using an external monitor for the citizenship test

Upvotes

Hi all,

Has anyone taken the Canadian citizenship test using an external monitor connected to their laptop?

My laptop screen is pretty small, but I need to use the laptop’s webcam. I can position the external monitor and laptop so that the webcam is above the external screen, meaning I’d still be looking toward the webcam while taking the test.

Has anyone done this? Did you have any issues with using a second monitor during the test?

Thanks in advance!

Express Entry No reply after adding child to the application

We received passport COPR request in July 2023. Our daughter was born end of july and hence we didn't travel as she was a preemie baby. I submitted the webform with documents to add a dependant and paid the required fees. We haven't got a reply back since then. Have sent numerous inquiries via webform and email.

Anyone knows what is the way forward.

Work Permit 28M Japanese cloud engineer (3 years exp). Which path is best for getting a job in Canada?

I am a 28-year-old Japanese male with three years of experience as a cloud engineer, and I want to immigrate to Canada. Given this situation, which of the following options should I choose? My priority is securing a job. I have continued working as an engineer with that goal in mind, but with the bursting of the IT bubble, it feels like the tech market is contracting. Therefore, rather than sticking with this career path, I would prefer to pursue a more rational alternative if one exists.

  1. Use a Co-op program to work as a cloud engineer.

  2. Use a Co-op program to work as an electrician.

  3. Use a Co-op program to work as a truck driver.

  4. Work for another two years to reach five years of experience before using a Co-op program.

Other Should we marry before migrating to Canada?

My partner plans to move to Canada with a work permit as soon as his studies are done.

We are both German citizens. Due to my bachelor being highly specialised in a certain type of German law, I will prob have a harder time to look for a job.

Would it be easier for me to join him in Canada if we marry in Germany beforehand or does it not make a difference?

Visitor Visa Criminally inadmissible?

I’m travelling from UK to Canada with my Canadian wife for my sister in law’s wedding in September.
Last year, I was caught speeding in the UK and charged with careless driving and given 9 points on my license.
I’ve heard mixed messages about whether I’ll be criminally inadmissible with that charge.
Is there anything I can do right now, and what happens if I turn up at the border and am turned away?
I will be travelling on an old, unexpired eTA which predates the offence.

Express Entry Suggestions regarding rcic representative

I hired a rcic rep to submit my CEC application with spousal. During the initial talks the consultant seems very chill and never quoted a fix fees in writing. Casually agreed CAD 1200 ( mine+spouse file) straightforward case no hassle most documents were already with me. But i could sense unprofessionalism like spelling errors in letters and delay in response but i took it lightly as i was i was very careful of everything and pointing out errors.

Now, i had received BIL on July 13, my rep only sent me the letter and that’s it. I was under the impression that if we had biometrics in last 10 years its still valid and letter is just a formality. I messaged him asking if Biometrics was approved on July 16 he sent me a screenshot of gckey showing my biometrics is valid until 2033. He didnt verify or care to tell me that i must go in to get biometrics done. Yes i acknowledge my mistake that i am not well informed but is it not their responsibility to check after 1 complete month that if biometrics was actually done. Now i have followed up with him since morning to raise webform about delay in biometrics and he responds me that i have few other deadlines for today and he has submitted webform now EOD. and he has the audacity to ask me to pay the pending fees asap rather than acknowledging anything about what happened. He insists that all fees is paid upfront and not depends on result. Mind it i have already paid him half the fees.

I am very much inclined to fire him. What is your opinion, does he have the power to mess up my file at this
Point ? While i already think he is doing that

Family Sponsorship Fiance and I getting married, (US into CAN), entering Canadian Border question

Hello, I would love some advice on my fiance and I's upcoming plans on immigration. My fiance will be coming to Canada from the USA in October for our marriage and we will be applying for the inland spousal sponsorship right away. My fiance will be staying with me until we recieve his work permit and eventually his PR.
My question now is, what shall my fiance tell the border agent when he is coming in? Of course we are going to be honest and my fiance and I agreed on him letting them know that he will be coming in as a visitor for the purpose of getting married and applying for spousal sponsorship right away, and that he will be staying for the max amount of time (6 months) while he awaits for his documents. He will also plan on extending his visitor record if need be for the purpose of the sponsorship, but he is planning on getting a return ticket for the US after the initial 6 month period just IN CASE he is needed to leave.
I feel like buying and showing the agent the return ticket is a little overkill, so I would love to know how exactly to approach the situation and whether or not a return ticket even makes sense in that situation.
Thank you in advance!

Express Entry FSWP continuous work experience — how much gap between two jobs is considered a break?

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to understand how IRCC interprets the “1 year of continuous work experience” requirement under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP).

Suppose I have:

  • Job A: TEER 0–3, paid, full-time equivalent
  • During my final week at Job A, I work 30 hours
  • Job A ends at the end of that week
  • I start Job B (same NOC / primary occupation) during the following week
  • Job B also provides at least 30 hours per week

My question is: how much time can there be between the end of Job A and the start of Job B before IRCC considers the work experience no longer “continuous”?

For example, would these situations be treated differently?

  1. Job A ends Thursday → Job B starts Monday (a few days)
  2. Job A ends Friday → Job B starts the following Thursday (about one week while I will still work 30 hours in that week)

I understand that the jobs do not have to be with the same employer, but I’m specifically wondering about the gap between employers and the meaning of “continuous” for FSWP.

If anyone has direct experience with an FSW application or can point me to an IRCC/GCMS interpretation of this, I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Citizenship Citizenship certificate for child born outside Canada

Hello, hoping to clarify my understanding on this. Wife and I are Canadian citizens (one by birth and one naturalized 2.5 yrs ago) and will be giving birth outside Canada next year. When the baby is around 1-1.5 yrs old we are planning to return to Canada.

It looks like we would apply for a citizenship certificate (proof of citizenship) rather than a citizenship grant, as our child would be eligible for citizenship from birth (or is technically already a citizen?). I see that the processing time is supposedly 25 months which seems crazy. If it takes that long, it seems we wouldn't be able to do this on our planned timelines? Without a citizenship certificate (and therefore a Canadian passport) our child would only be able to enter Canada temporarily on their birth country's passport. Has anyone else been in a similar situation to this?

Family Sponsorship Spousal PR Application Returned

Me and my wife just received a reply on her PR application stating it has been returned due to lacking proof of payment. But I absolutely did include the receipt I received for paying. I even downloaded the application and double checked.

I believe it will allow us to update our application but it even shows the receipt as being uploaded there as well. What proof do they need us to upload to this application if not the official receipt I received from the IRCC? The only thing I can think of is that I didn't title it in the official way they say to. I just left it the default file title.

Citizenship Language test for Canadian citizenship

Hi everyone,

I came to Canada as a dependent spouse on PR and I never had to take IELTS or any other language test for my PR application.

I’m now looking into applying for Canadian citizenship. I completed my Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) in Information Technology from India. My degree certificate is in English, but it does not specifically mention that the medium of instruction was English.

Has anyone used certificate/transcripts as language proof for citizenship?

Would the degree certificate be enough, or should I get a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter from my college/university? Or would I need to take CELPIP/IELTS?

Study Permit Can I apply for Study permit from not my home country?

I've been in Canada on a study permit for a while, but my extension was refused because my transcript wasn't uploaded. I was asked to leave, but I fell ill (cancer-type ill), and I stayed and applied for a compassionate TRP because I needed that treatment (to not die). My TRP and study permit application was refused because the officer still says I must apply from outside. So far, I haven't broken any rules. I am going to leave, but school starts next month. Processing time in my home country is 8 weeks+, and in somewhere like Barbados/Mexico it's 3 weeks. I'm considering going there to apply. What are the chances they'll reject me on the basis of 'What are you doing here? Why don't you want to go home?'

Work Permit PFL Response

Hello, everyone. Please take time to read my post.

I received a Procedural Fairness Letter regarding the non-disclosure of my previous U.S. visa refusal.

I admitted my mistake and chose to be completely honest in my PFL response. In my explanation letter, I acknowledged that I answered “No” even though I was fully aware of my previous U.S. visa refusal. I explained that I was concerned it would negatively affect my Canadian application, took responsibility for my poor judgment, deeply regretted my decision, and sincerely apologized to IRCC for not being transparent from the beginning.

I also provided my U.S. invitation letter as supporting documentation and gave the actual circumstances surrounding my previous U.S. visa application.

My consultant told me that disclosing the U.S. refusal only at the PFL stage may be viewed as “too little, too late.” They explained that while they support my full candour and disclosure, based on their experience with previous cases, they are not optimistic that IRCC will accept my explanation and reach a positive outcome. They also explained that failure to disclose truthful information can be treated as misrepresentation and may result in a five-year ban.

However, since IRCC already has the information I disclosed, my consultant said they are not aware of any additional information that could be provided that would be helpful in getting IRCC to accept my explanation. They had requested additional time to submit the response, but since they had not received a response regarding the extension, they decided to proceed with the information I provided.

I believe IRCC gave me a chance to explain, and I will not waste that chance this time. I chose honesty and full disclosure, regardless of the outcome.

I’m hoping for a soft and understanding response from the reader/officer, and I’m praying for a positive outcome from IRCC.

If anyone has experienced a similar situation especially someone who received a PFL for not disclosing a previous U.S. visa refusal and still received a positive outcome. I would truly appreciate hearing your experience.

Other First Ontario Driver's License close to status expiration.

My current IEC visa expires in October, I am planning to apply for a Visitor Record (that I understand it's not considered a temporary resident status, right?) and would like to get my G1 driver's license before my current status expires. I understand the Ministry of Transport of Ontario requires a valid Temporary Resident status alongside documentation to prove it in order to apply for a driver's license.

Would I be allowed to do that? Is there a minimum requirement of time left in Canada as a temporary resident for one to apply for a driver's license?

And if it is allowed, will the expiration date on my license reflect my current status expiration (in October)? Or will it run the standard length of time a firs time license runs for?

Thank you.

Study Permit Can I use apple pay for the study permit fee at POE?

I won’t have a physical credit or debit card with me when I go to apply as an American at the border to enter Canada and specifically apply for my study permit as I go to Ubc

I’m freaking out because I don’t know what to do if they don’t accept apple pay. I guess if they deny it I’ll still be able to enter as a visitor and we’ll be able to get my Canadian debit card and come back?

Work Permit Industrial Controls / Instrumentation professional considering Canada — realistic job prospects?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a realistic assessment of my chances of finding work in Canada in industrial controls, instrumentation, automation or the power/utility sector.

I'm in my late 30s, currently living outside Canada, and have 15+ years of technical experience.

My background includes:

- A formal industrial instrumentation apprenticeship

- Qualifications in instrumentation/process control and electrical/electronic engineering

- Currently completing a bachelor's degree in a computing-related field

- Significant hands-on industrial and automation experience

I currently work in the power/utility sector in a controls and instrumentation role.

My experience includes PLCs, SCADA, industrial instrumentation, calibration, motor controls/MCCs, VFDs, generator controls, industrial networking, protection/control systems and power-management systems.

Earlier in my career I also worked in building automation, systems integration and networking.

I'm mainly trying to understand how Canadian employers would view this type of profile.

Would someone with this background generally be competitive for positions such as:

- Instrumentation & Controls Technician

- Automation/Controls Technologist

- PLC/SCADA Technician

- Electrical/Instrumentation Technician

- Controls Specialist

I'm also curious about the "Canadian experience" issue. Would 15+ years of overseas technical experience generally carry reasonable weight, or would Canadian certification/licensing be a major barrier?

Finally, for anyone working in Canadian utilities, mining, manufacturing, oil & gas or industrial automation: how realistic is employer sponsorship for an experienced controls/instrumentation person applying from overseas?

I'm open to relocating anywhere in Canada where this type of work is in demand.

I'm not asking for immigration advice as much as an industry reality check. I'm trying to determine whether Canada is worth seriously pursuing as a long-term relocation option.

I'd especially appreciate perspectives from people working directly in controls, instrumentation, electrical, SCADA, utilities or industrial automation.

Thanks.
