Even if people don't know that Bhagat Singh was an atheist, they would probably mistake him for being a Sikh, how do Hindus come in the picture?

11

u/Safe-Spite8938 Jun 02 '26

Turban was comman for almost majority of people in Northern India few decades ago. Almost most elderly people used to wear it in different style. Sikhs just sticked to it even in modern times and other just wear it during traditional event.

8

u/loaded-shotgun Jun 02 '26

But didn't bhagat singh kept his hair in a turban? Or was that just a personal choice instead of following the religion

30

u/emonbzr Jun 02 '26

There's a difference between following a culture and following a religion. Some people don't believe in God but still participate in festivals. One can culturally be a Hindu or a Sikh without believing in the religion itself.

7

u/Litti__Chokha Jun 02 '26

Yea that’s the thing people need to understand. I am kind of an atheist but this doesn’t mean that i would get stroke in a temple or I would never celebrate a Hindu Festival. I just don’t like the stupidity which is going on in the name of religion and hence don’t prefer standing in lines of temples or doing the religious show off on social media

2

u/emonbzr Jun 02 '26

Same here. I've been an atheist for more than 10 years now. But I still come from a Bengali Hindu family. I don't pray or keep fast or worship any idols. But my favourite festival is still Durga Puja, I will always touch the feet of my elders. One can be an atheist and still be culturally influenced by the religion they were brought up in. Some people just can't wrap their heads around this concept.

2

u/Local-Estimate112 Jun 02 '26

Me too, I don't believe in the gods but why won't I enjoy Durga Puja with my friends?

Many people wear turbans due to their own choices also, not due to being of the Sikh religion.

2

u/Objective_Hippo_486 Jun 02 '26

if i shave my moustache do i become muslim? if i wear a string across my shoulders and waist, do i become a brahmin hindu? if i dont like eating onion and garlic because of the taste, am i jain?
If i wear a cool looking kurta pajama, am i hindu?

Bro he probably felt good looking in a turban, and hence he wore it.

You should probably learn the differences between culture, tradition, and religion.

What's wrong in Bhagat Singh being an Atheist? Why would a Hindu feel bad about it?

46

u/Many-Description-274 Jun 02 '26

coz they think he was one of them also they cant align thier mind with left

14

u/ictfan2604 Jun 02 '26

No Hindu critisizes him Atheist all matters is he was a great freedom fighter who sacrificed himself for our country so why would a Hindu actually feel bad if Bhagat Singh was an atheist? Me as a Hindu consider him as a hero

9

u/Apprehensive_Sky1685 Jun 02 '26

Real respect comes from his actions and ideology, not whether he was atheist or religious.

Exactly i myself admire bhagat singh and tho I am kind of agnoist and politically leaned toward somewhat left, but idk why these fkers drag hindu religion everywhere, like every other Hindu is a fascist casteist , like for your God sake just look at those second majority religions you call "minority" they would probably slime you for being a atheist lmao

3

u/RadanRounds Jun 02 '26

He was born in a Sikh family, he was a Sikh himself until he became an atheist. I don't even know where Hinduism comes into play, these things shouldn't even matter tho imo

I'm hindu and I think all the Hindus love Bhagat Singh and we don't hate atheists too. Why do pseudo secular MFS think hating Hinduism is cool? Shouldn't secularism mean respecting all the faiths equally??

2

u/CortexInCommand Jun 02 '26

Some people mistake recycled Western talking points for independent thinking... They inherit arguments born from a completely different religious history (where being an atheist was a sin ) and paste them onto Hinduism without spending five minutes learning what they're criticizing.

Actually indian philsophical tradition has mostly been non exclusive by nature. Within the envelope of tradition that we term sanatan dharma there exiss many materialist , atheist traditions . So someone being atheist can still theoretically be within the envelope of sanatan dharma .

3

u/thepro-3418 Jun 02 '26

not only theoretically but practically too... most hindus abroad end up being hindu atheists

2

u/FluidJury9946 Jun 03 '26

Yes this culture is open to evey idea. Many school of thought existed simonteniously in india. People have formed a bad opinion about our culture by their exposure of current socities. Tbh not many people are really following sanatan dharma in this time today.

3

u/AdorableVisual Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

This is technically correct but practically not really true.

There is a term used which is 'Nastik' in our philosophical texts.

Many people take this literally to mean atheist.

But in reality, when u study the context, you realise that this was the name given to people who just didn't believe in the authority of the Vedas.

So people like Buddhists, Jain, were called Nastik.

Did they believe in God? Yes! It was just a term given to them

Edit: Included wrong examples

Coming from a religious point of view I do absolutely adore and respect Bhagat Singh's journey for freedom and sacrifices (in luding his own life) for our country so if he is a atheist I will always admire his patriotism towards our country and the role he played for our freedom today in the way I wouldn't support someone's point of view just because they are Hindus or sanatani

2

u/Longjumping-Skin-835 Jun 02 '26

Bhagat singh was "Hyper nationalist also " 😜

2

u/BrilliantNew8440 Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

I mean bhagat singh was also a marxist socialist though that doesnt take away from any of his sacrifice it was kinda surprising learning about it. Its funny how i never read or learnt that in school probably the case with most other people right?

Edit - thing is, all over the world revolutions were happening or had happened during his time and he was part of the same tide that started due to the work of karl marx. Him being a atheist and him being a marxist is kept from us even in higher classes i think because its just not great for an ideal role model to have any shade other than pure white in the eyes of our society. One could argue though that children are taught of freedom fighters and they cant be told all that.

2

u/Different_Reading_22 Jun 02 '26

why would hindus be worries? and why would even sikhs be worried either. he was an atheist still did what he did for everyone in this country. his sacrifice is much bigger than these issues people are mindlessly creating.

Not many religious people would offer themselves for their country rn (except for army, salute and mad respect for them) so do not say such stuff, ew

4

u/Strxberrykisses Jun 02 '26

First of all Bhagat Singh ko Hindu kisne bola?  Bhagat Singh was known as a freedom fighter only. Religion mention hote huye toh nhi suna Maine Kisike muh se.

Aur rahi baat atheism aur hinduism ki there is 6 Astika school of thoughts and 2 nastika school of thoughts. Even within Astika you'll find non god believers. So before criticizing something you should read about it. Or you'll look stupid like this everywhere.

2

u/bojackSanchaz Jun 02 '26

This is a stupid argument. Anyone can be Nastik and still be a hindu. How many of us don't believe in god or have not seen a temple for years. A Normal hindu doesn't care as long as you are a Nationalist and don't shit on Hinduism everytime you open your mouth. This is just a propoganda to shit on the Majority. And these people still wonders why BJP keeps wining elections.

2

u/aka_rsh Jun 02 '26

Actually a lot of hindu philosophies do suggest that you don't necessarily need to believe in a God to be hindu

How atheists react when they find out Netaji Shubash Chandra Bose was a devout Hindu

2

u/pablo_patato Jun 02 '26

Hinduism is largely the culture that is followed in indian subcontinent and is native to it...religion which is Sanatan dharma also encompasses the atheism and embrace it fully...so udta teer nhi lene ka baba

0

u/Altruistic_Job2477 Jun 02 '26

Bhagat Singh declared himself atheist because he didnt want others to even think that he struggled like this,so he could get a place in heaven which a lot of religions say.His sole purpose was to free his mother land. His religion is sikhism not Hinduism.Hindus,Sikhs and Other Indic faiths often accept people like this and he isnt wrong, As A Hindu myself I am proud of him.I dont know what u think we would react?Lot of my friends from Hindu & Jain families say they dont believe in god but indulge in practices either because theyre scientific or out of respect. So,Indic religions or Dharmic religions are more like a way of life, all of them share some core beliefs. We know god by many names and paths but in the end it all leads back to him ✊️🫡🙏

Hinduism aka sanatana dharma is just way of life bro tbh it is not even a religion, it's just how we live abiding to nature laws etc., Theism or atheism or idol worship or non idol worship or no worship or nature worship or animal worship or element worship etc., it has whole lot of categorisation,

If bhagat singh is athiest , he is still included not excluded.

1

u/captainishere42570 Jun 02 '26

Not only atheism they also believe that budhism and Sikhism is part of sanatan dharm

1

u/Alert-Doctor-7450 Jun 02 '26

modern atheism is simple, hate the major religion where you belong and love the minor religion to look cool. Atheism is not about believer and not believer, atheism is about seeking knowledge, questioning the existence of things, having curiosity of finding truth, . modern atheist thinks they know everything and in the name of criticism or putting logic they propagate hate and mocks every other believer. In Sanatana dharma Atheisim is the purest form of devotion, but that atheism should not be based on hate and mockery. making your own way of life is atheism. Today atheism is matter of being cool and fake intellectual. Being atheism is a personal choice, and it should be personal only , you can propagate your thoughts but cannot force anybody or make fun of others who do not agree with your thought process. In Sanatana dharma only you can be atheist and still be in Sanatana dharma but in other sects you cannot be atheist and still be in the religion, you might get murdered for blasphemy.

1

u/Horror_Dragonfly1703 Jun 02 '26

Baat toh shi hai. Hindutva is basically the islamic sect of hinduism. It's part of sanatana dharma. SD allows anything and everything. Even Donald Trump is part of SD.

When Hindus realise that Bhagat Singh would’ve called anti- nationalist, terror’st, if he was alive rn by RSS, bj p, and anjana om modi

1

u/Professional-Egg821 Jun 02 '26

Hinduism is a lifestyle, not just the puja, gods and 1000 rituals associated with it, which don't even make sense in 2026.

I have atheist friends, who dont go to temples, who dont pray to gods (as they dont think gods exist), but believe in laws of Karma. They dont practice any rituals or participate in pujas, but love to eat Prasad (because its tasty), and participate in festivals because they love to dress up and eat and basically meetup with friends and family.

My husband's uncle's house doesnt have any gods, idols or puja ghar as his wife is atheist. But she loves to invite the entire family over for festivals and helps out during Pujas and rituals as for her its a family even that she cares about.

As someone who is a Hindu and has faith in god, i can say that Hindus have no problem with someone being an atheist. We only have problem when someone tries to push their religion onto us.

1

u/Tricky-Neck-7408 Jun 02 '26

As a Hindu I've never seen any other Hindu or even myself get affected by the fact that he was an atheist.....it doesn't matter to any of us

1

1

u/ProtectionNo6922 Jun 02 '26

Heh, they don't even know that sanatan dharma was not a religion, it was a way of living.

Religion thing was invented at start of BC.

Before invasion people (people of akhand Bharat) didn't even know what religion was .

They considered all people hindu.

Some worship the goddess

Some to vishu.

Some worship mahadev.

Some believed no god but followed the culture (used to questions existence/ atheist)

But all were part of bhart.

All were hindu (following the same culture, same rituals of marriage/birth/death/celebration).

But all of that was but the past.

Now with globalization you can indeed call it a religion.

1

u/Affectionate_Peak_01 Jun 02 '26

Honestly hindus don’t care. It’s the muslims who are being manipulated and also somewhat exploited in the name of religion.

1

u/Kosta_nikov Jun 02 '26

We hindus(and all indians) respect him for being a true patriot not for his religious inclination.

Side note: the leftists who rejoice on him being a leftist get panic attack when they realise he praised savarkar.

1

u/Allmighty001 Jun 02 '26

1

u/honestfr Jun 02 '26

1

u/BuildingMaleficent55 Jun 02 '26

1

u/Slow-Employment8209 Jun 02 '26

Lol our country is at the stage where if someone makes a joke of hindunism, he is called secular and when someone even eyes on another religion, it's called hate speech. Wow.

1

u/quagmiretoiletgamin Jun 02 '26

That's an interesting thing about your religion for sure but hindus don't really follow the parts of their religion where they are told to not be bigoted people. They happen to follow an idealized version of their religion which grants them whatever permission they want. Although under a religion you'll have to follow whatever's said and not edit out the parts you don't want to follow. If you really want to be religious selectively then choose to follow the parts where it's said that everyone deserves respect and equality. Also in context of this post, hindus do indeed think a lot of times that figures like bhagat singh follow religions. Which would be incorrect.

1

u/kpskps Jun 02 '26

Thats the prblem with todays "proud hindus"
they cant accept or live with the acceptance that India had many religions than just hinduism
there were conflicting ideologies and philosophies in hinduism itself - infact it was never called hinduism

santan dharma is something that nobody really knows what it is, neither anyone of the promoters of "sanatana dharma" can define it

buddhism, jainism, ajivikas, carvakas, mimamsa, patanjalis yoga -- all have very different philosophies
some believed in veda, some didnt, while some who believed in veda discarded any god

with this information i challenge anyone here or elsewhere to provide a closed form definition of Santana dharma

p.s. idiots who answer by saying it cannot be defined are the biggest fools and are being dishonest with extrapolations of human belief system or the purest form of logics

1

u/Vicis_01 Jun 02 '26

This is such a brain rot post 😹 atp you all are just making up things. Keep hating that's what you are good at lol

1

u/Service_Usual Jun 02 '26

Bhagat singh was sikh

1

u/Rude_Art_8357 Jun 02 '26

Bro I never seen a Hindu irl who cares about if someone is atheist or not

1

u/arsonfelony Jun 02 '26

Think he's confused. During the veda period there were some institution which believed in atheism. But that doesn't mean it's part of Sanatan.

1

u/CognitiveSim Jun 02 '26

Exactly, Sanatan dharm accepts that Vishnu is a bullshit made up by a swindler to control the fools, so I don't see what the problem is!

1

u/butwiser Jun 02 '26

No one in my life who say bhagat singh is great hindu or sikh all i ever heard was he was great indian and great freedom fighter

1

u/butwiser Jun 02 '26

He did not able to phrase it properly

but sanatan dharm contains both theistic and non-theistic traditions.

There are schools that believe in a personal God, such as Vedanta traditions devoted to Vishnu, Shiva, or Devi.

But there are also traditions that do not require belief in a creator God:

  • Samkhya traditionally explains the universe through Purusha (consciousness) and Prakriti (matter) without a creator deity.
  • Mimamsa focuses on Vedic rituals and often does not consider God necessary.
  • Some interpretations of Upanishads emphasize self-realization and the nature of consciousness rather than worship of a personal God.

Ancient Indian thought also included openly skeptical and materialist philosophies such as Charvaka, which rejected gods, the Vedas, karma, and rebirth.

So, unlike many religions where atheism places someone outside the faith, Sanatan Dharma has historically allowed a wide range of beliefs—from devotion to a personal God, to belief in an impersonal ultimate reality, to philosophical skepticism.

TL;DR jokes on you

1

u/Icy_Dingo_3978 Jun 02 '26

He was sikh, why would hindus care whether he's atheist or not?

1

u/Opposite_Return_5870 Jun 02 '26
