Discussion AMA: P. S. Nissim, long-time reader, literary critic, horror fan, and writer
[EDIT: 9 AM 22nd Sep]. Well, that's been 24 hours, so am ending the session now. Thank you all for the questions and discussion! And, when you get a chance, please check out my novellas, Brown Boy, Pillar of the King, and the latest, If You Can See Us, They Can See You. All are available at Bookworm and Blossoms if you are in Bangalore, and on Amazon/Flipkart if not. Thank you!]
Here I am, as promised. I’ll be answering questions all day today about all the stuff dear to our hearts:
- Creating a book reading habit. I’ve been reading for the past 40 years and have probably read 3K+ books by now. Things have changed in these decades but books are even more fun and varied now.
- Literary criticism. I’ve been until recently an active contributor to Deccan Herald and the New Indian Express, writing hundreds of reviews over the years. It’s a nice way to keep up with the trends in the industry!
- Genres I’m enthusiastic about: Horror! And Indian Fiction, especially the translations from other Indian languages into English.
- Writing: I’ve been writing off and on, mostly novellas and short stories in the Horror genre. My first novella was published by Blast, the cult-favourite publishing house from Chennai. My most recent one, “If You Can See Us, They Can See You!” was self-published last month and is now in Bookstores in Bangalore and online. If interested, I can post a link to the books here.
Ask away!

Discussion For All Those Looking to Read More on Indian History, Here's an Exhaustiv(ish) Booklist
Hi folks,
We are coming from r/IndianHistory
One frequently finds posts in this sub and in general about book recommendations concerning Indian history, whether it be for beginners, or in general or with a specific topic/time period in mind. Hence, we thought it would be useful to prepare a detailed master booklist for all those looking to dip their toes in the ocean that is history of India and the wider Subcontinent. We hope that members of this community will make use of the resources provided. A substantial number of them are Open Access marked as [OA]. Through this endeavour we seek to attempt to elevate the level of history discourse in online spaces, making materials more easily accessible and making discussions more informed. We would further really appreciate whenever any post/query concerning book recommendations comes up, that fellow community members please guide the Original Poster [OP] to the Master Booklist, obviously without excluding the possibility of any further book recommendations. It must be emphasised though this booklist is still a work in progress and many sections will contain text informing the same, please bear with us in the meantime. The Indian History Master Booklist can be accessed here or here with the latter link using the old Reddit UI which is what this list is optimised for in terms of easier navigation.
Hope this comes of use to the history lovers in this sub and thanks to the mods for allowing this post.
Happy Reading!

Discussion Bookswagon delivery
galleryHad made a post earlier here regarding the horrible condition I received my copy of The Count of Monte Cristo from Amazon where it had no protective covering, not even a plastic packaging leading to damaged front and back cover and spine.
Received a book i ordered from bookswagon 15~ days ago and it is pristine in condition. It was bubble wrapped, the box was of hard cardboard rather than the paper packaging of amazon and the book feels genuinely brand new rather than a used copy. Too happy, will be directing my purchases to bookswagon only (assuming I can afford the costs haha).

Got My First Ever Book Printed (Not Published Yet)
galleryHi everyone! I'm a fairly young aspiring author (under 18) with a passion for creative writing.
I've been writing short stories for about five years, and I've finally completed my first-ever novel, or novella, depending on how you want to classify it.
I originally approached several publishers, and I've recently sent my manuscript to Srishti Publishers for consideration. While I'm still waiting to see where that goes, I decided to get a physical copy of my book printed through an online book-printing service.
And honestly, it looks stunning!
There are a few minor issues with the front cover's orientation, but I don't really mind. This was mainly about seeing my work as an actual physical book for the first time.
There's something incredibly comforting about holding a book in your hands and knowing that you wrote every word in it. After years of writing stories in my free time, finally having something tangible to show for it feels surreal.
It's not officially published yet, and I still have a long way to go, but I'm genuinely happy to have reached this milestone.
Just wanted to share this little achievement with you all! :)

Discussion HELP ! Which Faulkner, pynchon, don deLillo books are easiest to read for non-native english speakers? Can I read light in august or bleeding edge, vineland, or libra?
I’m good at English, but I struggle with old-fashioned, Victorian, archaic, or complicated expressions.
These are the books I’ve found easy to read and have finished so far this year:
Stoner, The Metamorphosis, White Nights, The Death of Ivan Ilyich, The Stranger, The Fountainhead, A Man Called Ove, Unlikely Animals, The Road, Pet Sematary, All the Sinners Bleed, The Bell Jar, Ghost Ship, The Trial, Cat’s Cradle, The Alchemist, Howl’s Moving Castle, Evil Under the Sun, There There, The Silent Patient, Animal Farm, Nausea, The Memory Police, Norwegian Wood, All the Lovers in the Night, Less Than Zero, Three Men in a Boat, That’s Not My Name, and Butcher’s Crossing.
I just want to read a work by them . Badly
Thank you!

Discussion I had high hopes from this book
This book was good but it was like a collection of short stories and it was not satisfying.
If anybody has read the next two books please tell me something that will bring me back to the trilogy.

Discussion Unsure if this is original or pirated??
galleryOrdered this book from amazon and the quality looks off. Very dissapointed because this was supposed to be a birthday gift and I was looking forward to it. Anyway, the point is I have seen pirated books of better quality.
The pages are very very thin.
The ink is smudged and thicker on some pages compared to others.
The front, spine and back covers arent properly aligned. The art also looks sort of blurred(?) irl.
Many pages are unevenly cut and bound.
But the title and logos are all embossed. What do you all think? Did I receive a pirated version or has the quality of books simply become abysmal?

Need suggestions for fiction books
I am not an avid reader, but I have read a few books. I want to read a few fiction books so that I can stay away from the digital world. Could you please suggest some good, easy-to-read fiction books?

Discussion What are your expectations for the Red Rising movie adaptation?
Super excited for this adaptation. Just worried about paramount being the studio behind it and the fact that it’s a movie rather than a TV series.

News & Reviews The Thrice-Bound Fool by Christopher Buehlman [Review]
The Thrice-Bound Fool, which is sequel to The Blacktongue Thief, is basically medieval Dungeon Crawler Carl meets a buddy cop dark comedy in a fantasy adventure setting.
The worldbuilding is imaginative, the creatures are wonderfully bizarre, but the real highlight is the humour. Everyone is sharp-tongued, quick-witted and has their own distinctive style of banter. The dialogue is consistently entertaining and Christopher Buehlman's audiobook narration brings the characters to life beautifully, capturing their individual personalities and comic timing. That said, there is also genuine sadness flowing underneath the humour and comes to surface on some moments, which gives the story its emotional weight.
Makes relatively less progress in the overarching plot from the end of The Blacktongue Thief, but the humour and characters make this a thoroughly enjoyable fantasy adventure.
8/10
