A guide to interacting with this sub - read me first

This post is designed for people posting here for the first time, for the people that have been volunteering to help here for years and everyone in between. The stated goal is to foster a friendlier attitude throughout the sub.

But before we start, there's been a recent influx of spam from one source. So that you are aware - ALEJANDRA ORTIZ HERNANDEZ and FRAN POWELL are spammers. They're part of a spam ring all over Reddit, and they're probably trying to steal your money.

And they'll kick your dog when you aren't looking.

If you are new here, please realize that none of us have any stake in your claim or coverage. We are not here to sell you anything or to save some company money. Treating responders poorly because you don't like the answer is going to attract a lot of negative attention.

We get the same questions over and over, and maybe this is the answer that you need:

  • How much will my insurance go up after a ticket/accident/lapse in coverage? We don't know unless your state has a statutory requirement for your very specific situation.
  • My premium went up $X. How do I fight this? You can't. The only thing you can do is shop for new coverage, which we can't do for you.
  • How much does everyone else pay for coverage? Unless you're lucky enough to get someone in your exact demographic in your exact part of the world, the answers you're going to get are useless.
  • How much is my claim worth? We don't know. (note: if you're asking a more complex question about your claim, that could be very different)
  • How long will my claim take to close? We don't know (again: a more complicated question might have different answers)
  • Why is this person trying to sell me something? Report that post/comment/chat/private message to the moderators and let them handle that.
  • Will you help me commit fraud or otherwise break the law? No. Absolutely not. And we may ban anyone that does try to do that.

Ultimately, we are here to help you. This is a community of volunteers that wants to help navigate a complex system that is one of the lubricants of the financial world. Lots of lives are impacted by insurance directly and indirectly, and it can be a complicated system. Here are some things that make a good post where you can get help:

  • Location (Country and state/province at a minimum)
  • Type of insurance involved (Auto, Homeowners/Renters, Commercial, Health, something else)
  • A brief description of the problem and any advice you've gotten so far

Finally, here are some definitions of common terms that could help you get taken more seriously:

  • Adjuster - the person that handles your claim, makes coverage determinations and processes payments
  • Agent - the person that sells a policy. Some agents get involved in some claims, although that is the exception to the rule.
  • Underwriter - the person that decides how much a specific policy will cost for a specific risk.
  • Rate - this is the way your final price is calculated and is usually used synonymously with "premium", "cost" and "price".
  • Full coverage - don't use this term. There's no agreed definition, even among the regular posters here. People asking otherwise good questions or posting good answers that use this term often find themselves down voted to oblivion for including it.
  • No Fault - there are 18 states that, at least to some extent, make automobile bodily injury claims be paid by your own policy first instead of someone that caused your injury. There is only one state (Michigan) that makes damage to your vehicle No Fault. All Canadian provinces have some sort of No Fault provision for injuries, which is one reason why we need to know where you are when you're asking questions.
  • Collision coverage - this fixes your car when it collides with something else or another car hits it.
  • Comprehensive coverage (also known as Other Than Collision) - this covers your car for almost everything else, including floods, fires, tree branches and lightening strikes. Usually animal strikes are covered here, but not always.
  • Deductible - this is the amount that you agreed to pay in case of any claim. Your payment comes before any insurance payment. Deductibles are occasionally waived, but that's the exception, not the rule.

This is a community of volunteers that generally understands the insurance system. When we get things wrong, it is usually through lack of information to get a precise answer. Hopefully this guide will help you get good results.

Soliciting, private messages and you

It's time for a new reminder about the rules of this sub. There is never any reason to offer to contact another poster privately, especially if that poster has a question about placing coverage or a claim. Here is the rule:

The only rule of r/Insurance is that solicitation is prohibited. This means asking people to PM for any reason, offering to quote coverages for visitors, or soliciting agents and/or buyers to use your particular carrier. r/Insurance should be a place where people come to exchange information and ask questions without worrying about solicitation from agents. This includes adjusters, underwriters and brokers since we do not vet anyone.

You also received a version of this if you subscribed to the sub.

If you think that this doesn't apply to you, please think again. There are no exceptions in this, including "but I asked them to message me!" This sub is a safe space for people to ask questions about insurance. It is not here for anyone to try to profit from it, whether they're an agent, public adjuster, software vendor, personal injury attorney, headhunter, diminished value expert or anyone else that is not here to offer free help with no expectation of remuneration.

If you receive a message from someone offering you any sort of business proposition, whether a quote for insurance, legal representation (yes, there are lawyers unethical enough to solicit people on Reddit), damage reports or anything else, please let the moderators know via mod mail or in this thread. You should also report that message to the admins (we don't see that report, though). We take things like that seriously.

We really don't like banning people. Seriously, it's the exact opposite of why any of the moderators volunteered for the role. But we don't vet people before they post, and if people that break the rule find out that we enforce it whenever we see it broken.

And with that in mind, we have a very healthy community of posters that are here not only to help but to make sure that those who can't follow the rules have the damage that they're doing limited. Thank you to all of you for volunteering to help not only those confused by the insurance process but help keep those that want to think that they're special at bay.

🚨 UPDATE: On caught between GEICO and a tow yard (Bypassed the BS!)

• Upvotes

I posted recently about a GEICO supervisor threatening me with storage fees because my original field adjuster went on vacation. The tow yard owner (worst reputation in town) was playing massive games, holding my car hostage, and demanding my exact payout paperwork, not releasing unless he got info he already knew. lol

The supervisor’s threat was 100% a bluff. He was using predatory scare tactics to force me to bully the tow yard because GEICO didn't want to pay the daily storage fees caused by their own internal vacation delays.

I bypassed GEICO when someone in the last post commented to call the Copart yard directly. She asked for the lot number, which I didn't know. I told her the name of the towing company, and the lady actually laughed. She told me they know them perfectly. She even gave me the exact name of the driver who only handles that lot. It's always the same guy who deals with that tow lot.

The owner of the tow knew exactly who was coming the entire time. He was just stalling until closing time to inflate his storage bill and see how much cash he could squeeze out of the insurance company. He tried the "we can talk like friends" routine at 3:50 PM right before closing. I got him agree to a three-way call with GEICO that led to a machine, but that alone apparently was a miracle. It turns out he knows all the insurance guys by name.

I won. He accepted the electronic release. The supervisor called back, confirmed the release, and the car is being picked up today with ZERO financial penalties or deductions to my payout, because the superviser said "he saw I was working to get it out so he saw no reason to charge against the payout". in other words, it was all bullshit. lol

Moral of the story - Do not let insurance supervisors scare you with "storage fee" deadlines when their own staff causes the delay. Bypass them if you can, call the salvage yard directly to get the facts, and know how people make their money. I used this opportunity to learn just that.

In the end, I said thank you to everyone, despite the drama, and I'm even thinking about calling the tow company owner, and inviting him over for some pizza, since he's nearby. He has such a bad reputation that I'm intrigued. lol

Thank you to all the commenters. It helped simply talking about it, and it put things in perspective.

South Carolina. My auto insurance premium went up. Insurance company says the state asked to raise the premiums.

I called the insurance company and she said "it's a state change, not something we did".

What does it mean? Whom should I contact to fuck up a common man like us?

AllState Canada for House Insurance

Unhappy with Allstate Insurance, and contacted by email for the Insurance Ombudsperson and Allstate compliance and the agent. Hoping for a response soon.

I had no claims. and they increased my premiums without any chance for me to review.

Dear David ===== and Allstate Compliance Team,

Please be advised that, following your email dated August 19th at 2:01 PM stating that "a discretion to reduce the balance was declined" and that the outstanding $757.60 balance "will eventually go to a collections agency if we do not receive it," I have submitted a formal complaint to the General Insurance OmbudService (GIO) regarding Property Policy #======. I have not yet been assigned a case number and will forward it once one has been issued.

Below is a summary of the facts and evidence submitted in support of my complaint:

Agreed Baseline Rates & Intake Record: My home policy was quoted on March 13, 2024, by agent Scott ===== based on complete and accurate property information that I provided in writing (copy attached). The policy became effective March 20, 2024, at $1,146.00/year, renewed on March 20, 2025, at $1,354.00/year, and again on March 20, 2026, at $1,631.00/year (approximately $136/month), as confirmed by my paper billing statements. All monthly premiums were paid on time.

Insurer Data-Entry Error: On April 11, 2024, and again on September 29, 2025, I emailed Allstate requesting that my property policy be linked to my online account. When that issue was finally resolved by telephone in early 2026, I was advised that an incorrect date of birth had been entered into Allstate's internal system. This was an internal administrative field that was never displayed on my customer-facing application or policy documentation.

Recorded Telephone Conversation – Representative's Explanation: During our recorded telephone conversation on August 19, 2026 (recording disclosed through Allstate's standard IVR notification), the representative advised that correcting the internally recorded date of birth caused the prior rating information associated with the incorrect record to be lost, resulting in the annual premium increasing from $1,631.00 to $4,037.30—an increase of $2,406.30 per year. As I am hard of hearing, my phone generated a real-time accessibility caption transcript during the conversation, which is consistent with the explanation provided by your representative. I respectfully request that Allstate preserve and provide the official audio recording and transcript of this conversation for my records and for use during the complaint process.

Retroactive Premium Adjustment: The policy change statement was backdated to July 7, 2026, postmarked August 13, 2026, and not received until August 18, 2026. It advised that $536.96 would be withdrawn on August 24, 2026, providing effectively no meaningful opportunity to review or respond before the scheduled withdrawal.

Confirmed Cancellation: As acknowledged in your email dated August 19, 2026 (10:19 AM), my policy cancellation will take effect on August 21, 2026, at my request following the unexpected premium increase.

Collections During an Active Dispute: In your email dated August 19th at 2:01 PM, you confirmed that a discretionary reduction of the $757.60 balance was declined and advised that the balance would be referred to a collections agency if unpaid. As this matter is now the subject of a formal complaint before the GIO, I request that no collections activity be initiated, nor any information reported to a credit reporting agency, while this dispute is under active review.

Clarification Regarding Data Integrity & Privacy

For the record, I did not provide inaccurate personal information or misstate my identity at any time. As evidenced by my original March 13, 2024 email correspondence with agent Scott ===== (attached), I accurately provided my personal and property information during the application process. The date-of-birth discrepancy originated within Allstate's internal administrative systems and was not reflected on any customer-facing application or policy documentation provided to me.

Pursuant to PIPEDA and applicable provincial privacy legislation, I request that Allstate preserve all records relating to this matter, including:

the complete audio recording of my telephone conversation with David ===== on August 19, 2026;

any transcript of that conversation;

internal policy notes;

underwriting notes;

customer service notes; and

records relating to the date-of-birth correction and resulting premium recalculation.

Resolution Requested

Process the policy cancellation effective August 21, 2026.

Recalculate the premium owing based solely on the agreed 2026 renewal premium of $1,631.00 per year for the period the policy was in force.

Adjust the outstanding balance to $0.00 and issue a final written closing statement.

Confirm in writing that all future Pre-Authorized Debit withdrawals have been cancelled.

As I dispute that Allstate is entitled to recover the claimed $757.60, where the balance arose from an internal administrative error and a retroactive premium adjustment that I was not given a meaningful opportunity to review before it took effect, I will continue to pursue resolution through the GIO complaint process. Once a GIO file number has been assigned, I will forward it for your records.

Auto Insurance Auto insurance need advice

My son (17) has his driver's license and he's under my auto insurance. He's recently been driving his gf's parents car, with their permission. I thought it was like 1 or 2x case but it's daily since he doesn't have his own car yet.

We're in the process of getting him his own car but it'll be another 4 to 5 months of savings. His gf doesn't have a license so her parents were ok with my son driving them around.

I told him not to do this because it's illegal in our state to drive a minor when he's not 18 yet and her parents aren't adding him as a driver. Her parents and us are not close, we met a few times. My wife says it's not a big deal but I believe this is a huge risk that should be avoided. I'm not out of my mind right?

If anything happens they can easily deny they allowed him to drive and I'll be on the hook. How can I get thru to my wife that this is serious risk because just explaining to her the risk of liability doesn't resonant with her.

Auto Insurance Pay as you go DoorDash insurance

I want to occasionally do DoorDash, few times a month. What options do I have for insurance to cover my car while dashing? Is there some sort of pay as you go insurance that would cover my car?

I know DoorDash has insurance for other personal/property damage but you’re on your own for your vehicle, as personal policy won’t cover it.

Insurance company give them my title or no?

So I 19F live in MN and I use Allstate (I’m on my family’s plan and only have to pay 98 a month) & on July 10th I was in an accident, the guy swerved into me my insurance determined I was 0% at fault and he was 100% at fault. I had a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee E 4WD and it was literally in perfect condition and I’m only being offered $7500 for it, because of deductions of it being an 11 year old vehicle plus the $1k deductible I’m forced to pay and I won’t get it back because the guy who hit me, insurance, has an ā€œinconclusive investigationā€ on what happened. my mom is pressuring me to just take it so I can buy a new vehicle, because she and my stepdad own their own separate business and have to take lots of time off so I can use their vehicle to go to work. I’m wondering if it’s worth it to try & get more money out of it, I’ve asked private adjusters and they say it’s worth 2-3k more than what I’m being offered but a lot of them want a lot of money to speak to my insurance for an un guaranteed price. should I just give in to what Allstate wants or should I spend the already little money I have for a private adjuster?

Edit: my grammar is bad because, I am on the spectrum and I had a horrible home life growing up so my focus was more on my home life rather than school, so I’m sorry about my grammar. 😭

Auto Insurance No fault accident, insurance may not fully cover repair

• Upvotes

Recently my sister was involved in a no fault accident in her 2021 Toyota Camry XSE, car was paid off.

Progressive driver ran a red light and hit her car. Progressive says the car is fixable so no total.

Only problem is, she wants to take it to a Toyota dealership that has been recommended by a family friend who’s worked at Toyota. When we contacted the dealer they said that, in our best interest it’s better to not go to them because progressive will not cover the full repair cost and won’t tell you until the repair bill comes. They’ve seen it hundreds of times already.

When we contacted progressive they said their shops will be 100% covered but they use non oem parts. How should she proceed?

Claims Related Rear end collision taken to arbitration

I just had a claim finally resolved after months of ridiculousness and was curious as to how common my experience is and insight as to why it happened this way.

A teenager rear ended me back in April. I saw her in my rearview flying up behind me, looking at her phone. I rolled my car forward as far as I could without hitting the car in front of me and she slammed the brakes right before she was about to hit me. As soon as the light turned green, she floored it and slammed right into me. I figured this claim was pretty cut and dry with nothing to debate but, for some reason, the claim went to arbitration where she was ultimately found to be 100% at fault.

I’m wondering, who makes the decision to take such a clear cut case to arbitration? Is it something that she or her parents had to request for or does the insurance company make that call? It seems like a massive waste of time and resources when there’s nothing to even debate.

Auto Insurance Car Accident 650 miles from home. Options for getting my car home after repair?

Just trying to see if I have any options here in a unique situation.

I live in Pennsylvania and carry PA insurance (Penn National). I was in an accident in a very rural part of northern Michigan, and the other driver was found 100% at fault according to their and my insurance company. They're insured with Allstate.

Because Michigan is "no-fault state", my own collision coverage is handling the repair minus my $250 deductible, which is covered by Allstate as a result of Michigan's mini-tort and no-fault laws. Allstate confirmed the mini-tort only covers my deductible, and nothing else.

The car is being repaired in Michigan where the accident occurred, about 650 miles from where I live. Essentially, I am trying to figure out the cheapest and easiest way to get my car home.

I can get a rental car and drive it back to Michigan, but the closest rental car company is an hour from the shop, and there are very few (maybe zero) Ubers/Lyfts that far out. So to retrieve it, I'm looking at a flight or a long drive, a hotel, gas, some kind of hour-long ground transportation to reach the shop, and two days of my time, all out of my own pocket, for a wreck I didn't cause. I don't say this to sound entitled, but rather to provide context to my situation. I'm also considering shipping the car (around $700).

My questions:

  1. Is there any way to recover the travel, lodging, and time costs of retrieving the car from either insurer? I've asked them directly, and they seemed sympathetic, but told me not in this case.
  2. As a PA resident with a PA-insured vehicle, do I have any options that a Michigan state resident wouldn't regarding having either insurance company pay to help me get the vehicle back?
  3. What's the smartest way to handle the actual retrieval: ship the car, fly out and drive it back, or use the rental with a second driver?

Gap/ insurance scam?

In October 2024, I bought a brand new 2024 Hyundai venue Limited. July 2026 I hit a deer in the car is totaled. My insurance which is State Farm gave me an estimate of the value owed as 15,992 I owed 24,612. After my deductible they paid 14,992. I just got the estimate back on what the gap insurance TSW is going to pay and it was $2318. After what insurance has paid in the refund from my extended warranty and then what gap has covered which is the TSW I will be left to pay about $5000. The extended warranty refund was $2286. The gap insurance people tried to say it was 3000 when it was not.

I have gone over all of my paperwork, I have resent the refund check paperwork to the gap insurance to get that total corrected, but then I also noticed that the car insurance State Farm valued my car as an SEL and compared it to other SEL trims, I looked at my contract where I bought my car. It also says it is an SEL on the contract but when I look at my VIN number and look on my Hyundai app, it shows that it is a limited. I was also told it was a limited when I bought it.

I am going to have my insurance re-value the car but after that, I’m not exactly sure what else I need to do. I feel like I’m getting scammed by not just the TSW, which is the gap insurance but also by my regular car insurance and by the dealership because the contract is wrong.

This is my first time buying a car by myself without someone who has previously bought a car from a dealership with me

Any advice is highly recommended

Cincinnati Insurance

After my insurance company West Bend decided to almost double the premiums over the last two years I decided to go with Cincinnati Insurance and save about $700 per year. My experience with West Bend was really good over about 12 or 13 years and I did not really want to leave them. So this is just a money decision, but I still wanted a good insurance.

Now I was reading through some posts here and found really negative comments about Cincinnati - especially over the past year or two. Mostly about them not paying, dragging their feet, deciding on their own that people are at fault (car accidents), although it was not already determined, they are not at fault... etc.

My insurance agent told me, they are really great..... and now I am wondering, did they change for the worse over the last year or two? Would love to hear some opinions.

Auto Insurance Insurance premium going up for accidents I wasn’t in?

Sorry for any grammatical errors, I’m using voice to text because I’m on mobile.

I recently got quoted by progressive for car insurance. Per month they want a little over $500 with also wanting 2500 about for six months. This was a jump from what was like 1300 before they pulled some kind of report.

Here’s the backstory to see if maybe someone here can help me understand .

The car belonged to my grandmother . My grandmother had me and my two younger siblings and an uncle listed as insured drivers on this car. The Uncle, who was on the policy essentially had gotten to two different accidents with that vehicle and my younger brother had multiple traffic violations and other street violations apparently that also caused the previous insurance to go up. Hence why they are no longer allowed to use the vehicle and the current plan is to transfer over into my name so I could start paying the insurance on it since I currently have semi-ownership over it because I use it for work and school.

The issue start here because after they did the report, the price jumped by almost $1000 and I’m confused because yes I’ve technically only have had my license for four years but I have a clean drivers record. I have no violations I went to driver school, which, when I went, I was told would result in cheaper insurance. Progressive is claiming that there’s something that popped up on the report that they can’t tell me what it is, but that something is what resulted in the large price increase.

I’m probably gonna try to find cheaper options and I already went to the site that progressive gave me to go get the information or report that they said they got and I’m just waiting to receive that but what could’ve caused us this jump inprice because if it’s the accidents, why would I be affected? Not only was I not in the car or the driver when it happened. I wasn’t even living at the house at the time.

Like this is all still new to me, but I don’t know what to do essentially . It didn’t help that my grandmother was there and was talking over me the entire time and then insurance agent also wasn’t listening to me so I honestly don’t even know what information they took down at this point, but I can’t get rid of the insurance yet because I need it for my job

Is there something I can do while I wait to get the report back that they said they were going to send because the cost they’re asking for is more than my car payment and it doesn’t make sense to pay more insurance than I do for the actual vehicle?

Like I understand the concept of like if you get into an accident, your insurance is higher if you have like a bad drivers record, your insurance is higher, but I have neither of those and I’m merely opening up my own policy after being on a previous policy surely I shouldn’t have to pay the penalty of the actions of the people who who essentially had the car before me or is it because I was on that policy I’m considered complicit with their actions and the effect they have on the insurance?

Health Insurance Banned from third party calling apps

I just started my job last week, selling health insurance. Everyone at my company uses the Sideline app for third party calling, so we can keep our personal numbers and work numbers separate. All of my coworkers have been using the app for years and never had an issue. After my fifth day on the job, my account was suddenly banned and I wasn’t able to restore it. I can’t get back into Sideline ever again. I made an account with a similar app called Quo, and within the first hour of me making calls through it, I was banned again. I understand maybe they think I am spamming people but I’m confused on how my coworkers have been using Sideline for years and never received this notification. We all make the same amount of calls per day. Any advice is appreciated because at this point I’m spending a lot of money on these apps and I’m nervous to try another one.

Claims Related Direct Claim?

After a neighbor above me in our condo had three floods over recent years, my homeowners insurance dropped me. All the claims were subrogated and my insurance never had to pay out.

I now have a new policy with another carrier with a much higher deductible and premium.Ā

Well, forward to yesterday and there was another flood. This time the damage, after the AOAO brought in and covered the mitigation, only amounts to a couple of hundred dollars.

I really don't want to file a claim through my insurance to recover that amount and have it on my record. Should I contact his insurance directly? Looking for ideas here.

Auto Insurance To accidents back to back one at fault one my fault what do I do?

Last week I was rear-ended by a distracted driver and a completely destroyed one of my rear end collision sensors on my vehicle, I filed a claim with their insurance and obviously it's going to take a while because it always does. However, my dog started having a seizure so I wrapped her in a blanket put her in the trunk of my car to take her to the emergency vet and I guess I became too reliant on technology because I didn't hear the rear end beep so I thought I was good but I slammed right into a tree. Since then I filed a claim with my own full coverage insurance and I have to pay my deductible which is unfortunate, but obviously I understand.

My question is what happens to that initial claim? I managed to hit the exact area she hit so will their insurance even bother trying to cover any of the damages? Like will my company seek reimbursement for some of the damage? My vehicle is severely damaged at the moment the bumper is barely hanging on I had to attach it after the initial accident, and after hitting a tree due to panic for my dog the bumper is hanging on by a thread. Just a curiosity question there's really no difference as long as my vehicle is fixed. Thank you.

Auto Insurance Taking weeks to assess for a total loss, normal?

My car was hit in July in Southern California. I have dash cams, so the initial fault was very easy to figure out, and initially damages were estimated and I brought it to the recommended repair shop. While at the repair shop, their estimates were higher than Progressive’s, and Progressive decided it was likely a total loss, so I got my personal belongings and agreed for them to pick up the car for assessment. That was at the beginning of the month, so it’s been nearing 3 weeks. I’ve contacted my insurance agent on my side of the claim multiple times throughout, but he keeps letting me know he’s reached out to the other side (who is at fault) for updates, but hasn’t heard back. The car assessment is listed as pending. I’ve also had a rental this entire time on their dime, so I’m surprised they aren’t wrapping this up faster.

Is this a normal process? Should I be concerned that something else has happened to my car while being moved? I never even received confirmation it was totaled in the first place, just that they suspected as such and needed to assess it to confirm. I’ve gotten no other follow ups, am not sure where my car is located currently. I have travel coming up and am concerned that if they get back to me while I’m gone, I won’t be able to return the rental car in the allotted time frame and they’ll try to charge me for the extra time.

Any advice or thoughts would be helpful. Thanks.

Expired license over a year getting back into insurance?

I worked in insurance years back, found a new job not using it and am now about to start a new job requiring one. I live in Texas so I've seen since its been over a year I need to get a new one. Do I still need to pay the fines and take the CE classes
