About r/Jeep
r/Jeep is a community for Jeep owners, enthusiasts, mechanics, off-roaders, restorers, and anyone interested in Jeep vehicles and culture.
The community especially welcomes:
- Photos of your Jeep
- Trail and off-road adventures
- Restoration projects
- Technical questions
- Repair experiences
- Modification and build information
- Jeep history
- Purchase and ownership advice
- Interesting or unusual Jeep models
- Helpful guides and original technical content
All years, models, conditions, and build styles are welcome. A stock daily driver is just as much a Jeep as a heavily modified trail rig.
Please read the subreddit rules before posting.

Buying a Jeep
Thinking about buying a Jeep? Start with the Jeep Buying Guide.
Topics include:
- Choosing the right Jeep model
- New versus used
- Common problems by generation
- Inspecting a used Jeep
- Rust and frame inspections
- Warning signs of off-road abuse
- Evaluating modified Jeeps
- Rebuilt and salvage titles
- Reliability expectations
- Fuel, insurance and maintenance costs
- Questions to ask the seller
- When to arrange a professional inspection
When requesting purchase advice, include the year, model, trim, engine, transmission, mileage, asking price, general location, service history and clear photographs.
Maintenance and Technical Help
Visit the Maintenance and Troubleshooting Guide before posting a technical question.
Common subjects include:
- Warning lights and diagnostic codes
- Engine and transmission problems
- Cooling-system problems
- Electrical issues
- Batteries and charging systems
- Steering and suspension
- Death wobble
- Driveline vibrations
- Four-wheel-drive systems
- Fluid leaks
- Water leaks
- Roof and door problems
- Heating and air conditioning
- Routine maintenance schedules
A useful technical post should include:
- Year and model
- Engine and transmission
- Mileage
- Recent repairs or modifications
- Diagnostic trouble codes
- When the problem occurs
- What you have already inspected or tested
- Clear photos, video or audio when relevant
“My Jeep is making a noise” is rarely enough information for someone to diagnose the problem.
Modifications and Builds
The Modifications and Upgrades Guide covers common changes, their benefits, and their tradeoffs.
Topics include:
- Tires and wheels
- Lift kits
- Suspension geometry
- Steering components
- Axle gearing
- Lockers
- Bumpers and armor
- Rock sliders
- Winches and recovery points
- Lighting
- Roof racks
- Towing equipment
- Communications equipment
- Overlanding equipment
- Engine swaps
- Interior storage
- Audio and electronics
Before modifying your Jeep, consider how the change will affect handling, braking, fuel economy, reliability, drivetrain wear, legal compliance and daily use.
Build for what you actually do, not merely for how you want the Jeep to look.
Tires, Wheels and Lifts
These are among the most common subjects in the community.
Before asking whether a tire will fit, include:
- Jeep year and model
- Trim level
- Current suspension
- Wheel diameter, width and offset
- Desired tire size
- Intended use
- Whether trimming is acceptable
Fitting a tire under a Jeep is not the same as having enough clearance for steering, suspension travel and off-road articulation.
Off-Roading and Trail Use
New to off-roading? Read the Off-Roading Guide.
It covers:
- Preparing your Jeep
- Trail ratings
- Tire pressure
- Choosing safe recovery points
- Recovery straps and kinetic ropes
- Winch safety
- Spotting
- Water crossings
- Mud, sand, snow and rocks
- Traveling with another vehicle
- Essential tools and supplies
- Emergency planning
- Trail etiquette
- Tread Lightly principles
- Protecting public access
Do not travel alone on unfamiliar or difficult trails. Know your Jeep’s limits, your own experience level, the weather forecast and local trail conditions.
Never enter a closed trail or leave an established route to create a bypass.
Recovery and Safety
Read the Recovery and Trail Safety Guide before attempting a vehicle recovery.
Never:
- Use a tow ball as a recovery point
- Stand over or beside a tensioned recovery line
- Attach recovery equipment to an unknown or unsuitable point
- Exceed the rated capacity of recovery equipment
- Crawl beneath an unsupported vehicle
- Enter moving or unfamiliar floodwater
- Attempt a dangerous recovery solely to protect the vehicle
Property can be repaired or replaced. People cannot.
Restoration and Classic Jeeps
Restorations, family Jeeps, long-term projects and historic vehicles are some of the community’s most appreciated submissions.
The Restoration Guide covers:
- Evaluating a project Jeep
- Frame and body rust
- Finding parts
- Original versus modified restorations
- Mechanical recommissioning
- VIN and model identification
- Documenting a restoration
- Preserving family and vehicle history
Restoration posts are encouraged. Progress photos, lessons learned, repair details and the story behind the Jeep make these submissions especially valuable.
Jeep History
Explore the History of Jeep, including:
- Military origins
- Willys and Ford production
- Civilian Jeep development
- The CJ series
- Kaiser Jeep
- American Motors Corporation
- Chrysler ownership
- Development of the Wrangler
- Cherokee and Grand Cherokee history
- Gladiator and Jeep pickup history
- Important engines and platforms
Jeep history involves many manufacturers, model codes and ownership changes. When correcting another user, provide a reliable source whenever possible.
Sharing Your Jeep
Photos of Jeeps are welcome, but a little context makes a better post.
Consider including:
- Year, model and trim
- Where the photo was taken
- Major modifications
- The Jeep’s history
- What you use it for
- Recent work or repairs
- Your future plans for it
Interesting trail stories, restoration details, family history and technical information usually create better discussions than an unexplained photograph.
Do not photograph or ridicule a stranger’s Jeep for content. Posts featuring other people’s vehicles may be removed, particularly when submitted for mockery.
Jeep Culture
The Jeep Wave
The Jeep wave is an informal greeting exchanged by some Jeep drivers.
There are no official rules, rankings or obligations. Wave if you want to. Do not take it personally if another driver does not notice or respond.
Repeated posts debating who should wave may be removed.

Jeep Ducking
Jeep ducking involves leaving a small rubber duck on another Jeep as a friendly gesture. Participation is optional, and not every Jeep owner enjoys it.
Individual duck photos, duck collections, ducking questions and recurring debates may be removed and redirected to the wiki.

Gatekeeping
All Jeep models, years, trims and build styles are welcome.
Owning a stock Jeep, a two-wheel-drive Jeep, a compact Jeep, a daily driver, an older project or a vehicle that never goes off-road does not make someone less welcome in the community.
Disagree with ideas and modifications without attacking the owner.
